Pentagon Papers' Ellsberg Says Snowden Saves Us From The "United Stasi Of America"
It is perhaps too early to judge the impact of Edward Snowden's confirmation of conspiracy fact, but in Pentagon Papers' Daniel Ellsberg opinion in today's Guardian, there has not been a more important leak in American history. The "executive coup" against the US constitution that has, at first sercretly but increasingly openly, been under way since 9/11 could finally be stalled by the Whistleblower's efforts. Ellsberg notes Senator Frank Church's 1975 comments on the NSA warning of the dangerous prospect that America's intelligence gathering capability "at any time could be turned around on the American people and no American would have any privacy left," noting 'that has now happened'. That is what Snowden has exposed, with official, secret documents. The NSA, FBI and CIA have, with the new digital technology, surveillance powers over our own citizens that the Stasi – the secret police in the former "democratic republic" of East Germany – could scarcely have dreamed of.

Snowden's whistleblowing gives us the possibility to roll back a key part of what has amounted to an "executive coup" against the US constitution.
Since 9/11, there has been, at first secretly but increasingly openly, a revocation of the bill of rights for which this country fought over 200 years ago. In particular, the fourth and fifth amendments of the US constitution, which safeguard citizens from unwarranted intrusion by the government into their private lives, have been virtually suspended.

"I know the capacity that is there to make tyranny total in America, and we must see to it that this agency and all agencies that possess this technology operate within the law and under proper supervision, so that we never cross over that abyss. That is the abyss from which there is no return."
The dangerous prospect of which he warned was that America's intelligence gathering capability "at any time could be turned around on the American people and no American would have any privacy left."

THe article makes sense in that I believe these reeleases of the scandals are meant to be the thing that allows them to change the US' form of government, officially. That is, they finally come out and say, it's over. Obama has been saying so, since before 2008 (the constitution is a charter of negative limitations - it should tell us what government can and will do for us)
Dunno if the article is true ...but let's call it what it is: a coup d'état.
Seems to me that a series of events exactly like this have been on the cards and predicted by many people for some time. War (phony or real) has always been used by dictators to clamp down domestically. And there have simply been too many individual acts of authoritarian repression over the past 5 years for anybody still awake not to have joined the dots to see what's happening in America. The heavy arming of Dept of Fatherland Security is only one of them...the brewing conflict in Syria is another. The earlier & ongoing bailing out of banks instead of prosecuting the criminals is another.
What is unclear is WHO is behind this? Obama could not be controlling the levers alone. He may be a corrupt fascist Chicago thug but he's not smart enough to be in control.
There must be other very powerful agencies of the State involved...NSA,DHS,CIA,FBI and others as yet not identified.
Expect to see:
- Internet controls, including website blogs (ZH be warned!)
- travel restrictions.
- banking restrictions - including possibly confiscation of PMs.
- a raft of new Executive Orders to impose many other restrictions including freedom of speech, freedom of association and MSM reporting controls.
I'll believe something has changed when all of those crooks are swinging from ropes or falling blindfolded from lead poisoning. It may take the billions of bullets the government has been saving, but a serious house-cleaning is waaaaay overdue.

A friend of mine was busted by the Texas State Securities Board (as he should have been, it turns out) for misuse of some funnds he had raised doing a Private Placement deal for doing some oil and gas aquisitions.
Long story short....the State guy boasted to another friend of mine that they used the Patriot Act to nail him!!!!

I was working in DC and met Ellsberg at the time of the Pentagon Papers; his revelations were damaging: to the 'reputations' of corrupt politicians!
In retrospect, the release of the 'Pentagon Papers' did no real damage to the US. It revealed the incompetence and perfidy of the political class and their MIC buddies. There is a difference between national security and national corruption.
To be honest, as a very young guy at the time, I had doubts about Ellsberg's motives. With the passage of time, I know he was and is a hero to We The People, IMHO.
Snowden is the Ellsberg of this generation.

Progressives believe in community, not the individual. Hence they believe that you should live under a myriad of rules and laws in order to achieve community objectives.
In a community-based society, any system, that has the capability to allow those in charge to monitor the actions, transactions and thoughts of individuals in order to ensure compliance with community ideals, will eventually be used for that purpose.

You can't write history before it happens. Man you would've had a tough time had you been one of the founding fathers. You think that all happened in the blink of an eye? No it took years to get to the point of the Boston Tea Party or the "Shot heard 'round the world".

Small things collect to make a larger thing and then some momentum gets picked up and the course of history changes but it can't happen in a 2 hour mini series. The real world takes a little longer and many that see the spark often do not live long enough to see the final results.
You said "change". Change is evolution and that takes a confluence of events and time and having media reporting actual events certainly helps.
The sickening reality is that Snowden will not change anything other than the number of people who are now aware of what government has been doing.
Thefact is that this sort of behaviour is now established and supported by both sides of politics because chances are enough of those members of congress have been or will be blackmailed into continued support.
Until you get a whole mass of people willing to put their neck on the line like Snowden in a whole lot of different ways, nothing will change.

Here is the real issue with this.
It is not so much he may not be an 'American' even being born outside of America by at least one parent born within the US doesn't preclude you from natural born citizenship, the issue is his mother probably never filed the appropriate citizenship paperwork for him after his birth except for that Hawaii birth certificate which at that time anyone could apply for without proving birth in the state of Hawaii. Japanese people been gaming the system in Hawaii to get their kids US citizenship by this method. Which means if he is a naturalized citizen he should have filed an N-600 form out with the INS after the fact but if that is shown then it proves he lied about being born in Hawaii. Either way he lied. If I am misinteperting this please correct me.

If he doesn't have the right papers he is not a legal naturalized US citizen period and therefore ineligible to serve as the President of the United States.
I don't know for sure where Obama was born but I sure do know where George Bush Junior was born.
For what it's worth, place of birth does not guarantee you quality of leadership and while there is a constitutional requirement, I humbly suggest that most of the US constitution has been violated, trampled and misinterprested already for so many other things that this is just a pimple.

Sad but not surprising to see the Media immediately shift focus from "The Leak" to "The Leaker". Forget about what the government is doing and focus on who leaked the information. Any and all excuses to make this guy look bad and tarnish the image of the messenger and hopefully in a few days people will forget about the message.
Also, noble sentiments aside, I think he came forward because he knew his previous employers would hack Guardians email very quickly (or did they already have this?) and thought he was safer in the open. Not safe sure, but safer maybe.

While we're on the subject of "Conspiracy Theories", my theory is that a lot of the Conspiracy Theories out the are actually part of a Government Conspiracy Theory. So the real issues of US government using 9-11 attacks as black cheque for IRaq/Iran etc. or US Government spying on citizens get clouded by crap (seen here a LOT) like WTC Buildings were blown up or Obama is an alien from Kenya etc. etc.

I don't know about that being the most important leak. I thought the 7,000 59 cal machine guns, tanks and billions of bullets were pretty fucking important. I guess the wealthy feel they can be on the right side of tanks and bullets but not safe if their corporate secrets and safety of their wealth is jeopordized. So in that way since only the Stazi would be empowered by having all electronic information it represents even more of a threat than military weaponry.

Back in 1969 the US Government tried hard to keep secret that it was engaged in heavy bombing in eastern Cambodia and Laos. This was eventually leaked. Now, the enemy sure new that they were being bombed, so did the people doing the bombing. So who didn't .......simple answer, us. Because us, a public increasingly doubtful about a war gone haywire would have objected. Government secrecy in this case was intended to thwart the democratic will of the people.
The government keeps secrets not to protect us and not to fool the enemy (who generally actually know better than we what is being done to them). It keeps secrets to protect itself from the very citizens it claims to protect.
Our government believes it knows better than us children out here in the boonies to stupid, too naive, too whatever to make our own decisions. So it decides for us. And it lies to us and it leaves behind the real purpose of having a democratic state in the first place. The open debate of policy decisions.
Secrecy and broad invasive surveillance programs kills democracy and it kills it faster and more thoroughly than our enemies can ever manage.
