Ex-NSA Leaker's Advice To Snowden: "Always Check Your Six"
"Be lawyered up to the max... find a place where it's going to be that much more difficult for the US to make arrangements for his return... and and always check your six," is the warning (advice) that Thomas Drake offers Edward Snowden, adding that, "it's now validation of this vast, now systemic, industrial-scale leviathan surveillance system."
As Reuters reports, Drake is one of the few people who understands from personal experience what the NSA Whistleblower is going through - the 56-year-old was prosecuted under the Espionage Act in 2010 for allegedly revealing classified information about the agency's sweeping warrantless wire-tapping program. The government later dropped all but a misdemeanor charge.
"Always make sure you know what's behind you," he adds, "when you offer up information about the dark side of the surveillance state they don't take too kindly to it." Drake, whose life was "essentially destroyed," is now a technical expert at an Apple store, but he still believes what he did was worth it, having no doubts: "Is freedom worth it? Is liberty worth it? Is not living in a surveillance society worth it? You've got to stand up and defend the rights and the freedoms that prevent that from actually happening."
Via Reuters,
Thomas Drake is one of the few people who understands from personal experience what the future may hold for Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former NSA contractor who exposed the U.S. government's top secret phone and Internet surveillance programs.
His advice for Snowden: "Be lawyered up to the max and find a place where it's going to be that much more difficult for the United States to make arrangements for his return," Drake said. "And always check six, as we said when I used to be a flyer in the Air Force. Always make sure you know what's behind you."
Drake, a 56-year-old former intelligence official at the National Security Agency, was prosecuted under the Espionage Act in 2010 for allegedly revealing classified information about the agency's sweeping warrantless wire-tapping program. The government later dropped all but a misdemeanor charge.
...
"When you offer up information about the dark side of the surveillance state they don't take too kindly to it," he said. "They want to stay in the shadows."
...
Drake, one of six people indicted for leaking secret information since President Barack Obama took office in 2009, said the FBI investigated him because it believed he was the source of a New York Times story published in December 2005 that first revealed the NSA's wire-tapping program. He says he was not the source of that information, and 10 felony counts against him were dropped when he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of mishandling government information.
...
"My life was turned upside down and inside out," said Drake, who now earns an hourly wage as a technical expert at an Apple store. "I know what it's like to live in a surveillance state because the surveillance state was on me, riding me, for so many years. They obviously wanted to do me in. It was relentless. I wouldn't want any American to go through it."
...
Drake, who resigned from the NSA in 2008, said the data released by Snowden validated concerns he began raising internally as early as 2002 about a huge spike in domestic surveillance after the September 11, 2001, hijacking attacks.
...
"None of it surprises me," said Drake. "What you're seeing here is simply the continuation of what was done in absolute secrecy after 9/11. Those programs were put in place and simply expanded."
...
Drake said he was still suffering the consequences of his actions. "My life was essentially destroyed," Drake said, noting that the case took a terrible financial and personal toll. He lost his retirement savings and went into debt as his legal bills approached $100,000.
...
Asked if he still believes what he did was worth it, Drake had no doubts: "Is freedom worth it? Is liberty worth it? Is not living in a surveillance society worth it?"
"If you don't want to live it, then you've got to stand up and defend the rights and the freedoms that prevent that from actually happening," he said.

The man's a hero.
He's a spook. This article is spooks talking about spooks. This has nothing to do with you, me - or reality.
Put up Edward Snowden's name next to the names of previous whistle blowers; Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, George Washington, Thomas Paine and all the other Founders.

I tend to think this type of heroism is rewarded by God, in matyrdom.

The reason you and your son enjoys higher standard of living than an Iranian or Syrian is because of NSA.

True and not true. We don't have an alternate history to compare to, but it looks increasingly obvious that empire has been a net negative.
At the end of the day, there will always be some balance necessary though, which is why both sides have difficult arguments, as Orwell noted:
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

No one is powerful enough to tilt the system. System is constantly evolving.
Just make sure you get out of the way when it is time for the system to punish.
But the masses are just busy running in circles, so why save them? Why educate willfully ignorant populace?
Just make sure you get out of the way when it is time for the system to punish.
But the masses are just busy running in circles, so why save them? Why educate willfully ignorant populace?
The exact WRONG way to think about it imo. Individual humans are deeply irrational, but it's been proven over and over that a group of individuals independently thinking will come up with the best solutions (in terms of the big picture). * NOT * to be confused with groupthink. It's called the wisdom of crowds.
Systems are mostly run by individuals, or small groups of like-minded individuals, which is why systems are prone to absurd failure. Up until the last couple decades it's been basically impossible to use 'the wisdom of crowds,' but with new technology there's a lot of promise for where this could lead.
And inevitable pushback because the power structures in place don't want to lose their privilege and so you hear a lot about how average people are stupid, ignorant etc. therefore we need 'brilliant' masters to lead everyone. And it's true that individuals are stupid and ignorant (especially, apparently, people in power) but the group is much smarter.
This is why humanity is desperately in need of a system which supports both individual liberty and the power of truly distributive democracy.

She just might be the dumbest person to ever serve in Congress. Special kind of stupid/mentally retarded.
Are you sure? Remember the guy (possibly not a Congressman) who was speaking with some top-brass military stationed on Guam. He asked them if they were worried that the island would tip over because there were too many people on one side. The military man, cool as cucumber, replied: No, no, we don't expect that to happen.
Yes, Hank Johnson (D-GA) is a close second.

You missed what's going on in that video.
The Senator is famous for having an extremely dry / sardonic humor, and knew all the questions he was asking about Guam were smoke being blown up his ass. So he asks the dumbest, most obvious, trolololol question he can (on record) just to tell the military guy that he knows he's being bullshitted, he knows he's being stone walled and he knows that nothing he asks is going to get a serious answer.
You think only 4chan knows how to troll? He's pointing out how tiny the Island is compared to USA military might and how he considers it a terrible choice. If you missed it, the military guy knows it as well, the finger pointing to his eye is a well known insult / non-verbal signal.

Ron Paul said in his book - "Freedom Under Siege":
"The individual who dares to demand to be left alone and to assume responsibility for himself becomes a criminal."
I would simply preface that quote with: "In the eyes of the state," to attain:
In the eyes of the state, the individual who dares to demand to be left alone and to assume responsibility for himself becomes a criminal.
I believe that any individual who has the audacity to place his own personal interests ahead of those of the state, is in essence - an enemy of the state.

I note that Juggernaut got almost 20 times as much support for his statement as detractors, yet, if Pew Research is to be believed (it is generally brutally honest) some 53% of Americans support being spied on by Big Brother. I take this to mean that not only has the surveillance state been extremely effective, but the ministry of propaganda (Fox etc.) has completed the coup. Makes me want to cry. http://www.infowars.com/most-americans-support-being-spied-on-by-nsa/
funny how only months ago they were reporting the government had some of the lowest support ever recorded, AND Americans considered it to be the BIGGEST threat to liberty.
Now, just in time for circling the big brother wagons, they report Americans are ok with being spied on?

Domestic spying greatly increased after 9-11 attacks probably to look for leaks from Insiders of that Government Inside Job terror attack, and to look for Intelligence people who understood it was an Inside Job.
I wonder how many of the Government technicians that did the detailed dirty work have been assassinated as part of the coverup, like the "mechanics" of a Mafia hit team?
Maybe the Israeli's are safe in Israel.
What should happen to NSA leaker Edward Snowden? Give him the Medal of Freedom for exposing a government out of control. 76.54% Nothing. If they have the power to spy on us all, sooner or later it will be used to kill millions.
I don't know if the spying is more than a way to ferret out would be sheep dogs mincing around in the herd.
But, for mass killing, look no further than Big Ag and Big Pharma.
Combined with the STRESS the lack of money creates, life span will decrease sharply if all goes to plan.
I doubt there will be "camps" to kill us off. GMO in most foods, medications (for every ache & pain) that have cumulative adverse side effects, increasing stress due to an obvious decreasing standard of living... life expectancy will fall for the majority within the next 20 years; making population control more palatable to the "softer" folks in the leadership class. I believe there are some who would love a mass kill off via war, some who would like to unleash hell on their own citizens (political enemies) and some who want mass death through attrition. I'd rather get shot in the head than die a slow and painful death, but being non-violent means I'll most likely die at age 52 from cancer due to environmental agents rather than being lined up in front of a ditch.
Algos are far more complicated than you realize; they're certainly being used to spot personality types. Everything you type on this site is used to model you. Every time you interact with The System, it's building a picture of you. As I said, The Internet is not what you think it is.
If you're more visual, I'd suggest the excellent BBC series "The Last Enemy". And, just to let you know: that sort of complete data denial / societal sphere manipulation is active and live. What people call "gang stalking" is usually a live OP.
Allegedly, of course. Sure it never gets used on innocent American citizens without their permission or knowledge. At least, not provable in court. And it's certainly not limited to the Government sphere: industrial espionage, hackers using "social engineering", Scientologists, you name it. There's even a budding market in contractors willing to pay out to do it (for instance, I remember something about a certain Circus magnate in the USA, an investigative reporter writing a book and eight years of OPs on her. Allegedly, of course) - what do you think everyone does with their training when they're no longer protecting the Nation?
What do you think all those humanities majors do with their acting degrees, if they're smart? Look into the 1960's French Avant-Garde and their use of theater on unsuspecting members of the public to cause awakening in their subject. Now it's Corporate, and has far sharper teeth. For the science fiction lovers among you, I'd suggest Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age, in particular the character path of John Percival Hackworth.
Society is a System.
Toxic metal chem-trails sprayed in the air, Aluminum and Barium, supposedly.
Fall-out poisoning people and the Earth. Aluminum linked to Alzheimers dementia.
Alzheimers dying young.
Monsanto supposedly has GMO seeds resistant to Aluminum toxicity which will kill off competition.
But how are the Puppet-Masters immune to this poison?
No chem-trails near Israel ?
as many wisemen have said, it's first purpose is to kill thought not people. whether or not they intentionally "took a leak" on all of us, it seems to be working for them. We are indeed getting conditioned and intimidated.... along with
the courts, the press, and the troublemakers
I apologize for the theatrics but this is such familiar territory it makes me sick... coming from someone who has practiced criminal procedure and constitutional law for 22 years and taught it at the university. The fact that such blatant, confessed and inexcusable violations of the fourth amendment are occuring at the grandest scale we have ever seen and the fact that US district courts are not issuing emergency injuctions to the executive branch all under the bullshit and criminal blanket of "the War on Terror" - a war, by the way that is already without debate based upon criminal lies, and the fact that the press or the legislative branch is not calling for impeachment and investigations screams to me that my country is dead.

The answer is to love one's (abuser) Provider. When he kicks you in the ribs, it is your own fault, as you obviously have failed to love deep enough. To commit far enough. When he takes your lunch and devours it before you, it is for your own good, for he is the protector, the Provider of all things. Do not question issues of freedom as those are but gifts from the Provider. We are but to be thankful for "gifts" we receive. Kneel before the Provider. He is our God.
The power pyramid is built, and they're now smoothing the plaster and applying the logos and the paint.
Drake said it, that it all accelerated after 9/11.
A disbelieving friend -- a college professor, no less -- once expressed his doubts about my/others 'false flag' assertion about 9/11 by saying "the MIC is the most powerful entity, why would they need to do this?"
Answer: How many divisions is it worth to have people believe this myth? It is invaluable to have the people self-herded into compliance without having to raise a baton nor fire a shot.
Break the 9/11 Myth and we break the rationale for this security leviathon. Failing to do so, well, you see and know where this is going -- the Stasi wet dream.
There are 2 scenarios with regards to the full disclosure on events of 9/11:
1) Disclosure by high gov't-linked entities leads to the planned & controlled downfall of the Republic, to be replaced by NAU, of course.
2) The next generation of people, or even two generations ahead, eventually find out the real details and start writing their own history books on the Rise & Fall of Fascist America.*
*Reminds you of anything? Reichstag fire. You bet that in 1933 there wasn't a significant number of people questioning the events that took place in Berlin that year, otherwise World War II wouldn't have been possible. So, again, history will throw somebody under the bus on it, but either way - America will have changed by then. In the direction desired by the Owners, of course. :-)

Yep, only full-retard liberals and low-info voters stand behind Barry now. That Liberty Tree is looking mighty thirsty...
Still don't know much about him. The most respected professor at Columbia says he was never there.....was pretty sure he would have remembered a 6'-4" black guy.
He looks smaller than 6'-4".
By low-info voter, I assume you're talking about my wife.
When I try to 'educate' her, she turns me off. BUT......she's now 'getting it' on her own.
At least I have that going for me.
Which is nice.
My co-worker's wife "got it" on her own. I swear I had nothing to do with it.
Perhaps we were a little harsh, but we know exactly what you are talking about. A family member voted for Barry the first time, but after four years of gentle berating and facts she did not vote for him last time.
thats ok......diebolt fixed it for you..
True that! Wonder if they regret not letting Mittens "win" the election? Think of all the useful race riots and other crises they could have used.

My sincere apologies.
That was meant for the buddah454.
Voting does matter, in theory at least, but what matters more is what we do individually in our daily lives. Too many of us have ignored the corruption we know to exist as long as we can get all the stuff we think is important to our self image as indoctrinated by our "economic society".
Which is nice...
Not sure why, but that never gets old.

Not wrong at all.
The US Presidency has become a temp position working for an agenda with a much longer timeline aimed at accelerating our survival rate to zero.
We now know beyond a shadow of a doubt anyone who wants this job, should not have it.
It is a rotational grab-fest, this time for all those hard working union thugs from Chicago. It was their turn.
The well is almost dry, get while the getting is good (or there is something to still get).
The thing that constantly chaps my ass is how even on ZH, people instinctively try to cram every single issue into this constructed (and false) left-right paradigm.
Sure, Obama is the puppet now and deserves our contempt.
But by focusing on this low hanging fruit we are enabling the actual powers that be to sit back and go about their business.
Even if the discussion is about what has been revealed, the focus is on the guy, and if he is a plant, patriot, traitor, etc.
Again, the low hanging fruit.
What we need is a fundamental discussion about what was revealed. Not about whether it makes us safer, or proper oversight is needed, etc. Just where did the NSA obtain the authority to wantonly violate the 4th amendment of the US constitution?
Exactly which amendment nullified the 4th amendment that would make it legal for a law that allows this wanton seizure of americans communications without a warrant describing the details of every bit of data seized and the reasoning behind it.
We do not need more regulations of this activity. We need to shut down this agency, and publicly destroy all the hardware that contains this data. Whether it makes us safe or not is not the question.
As an aside, I was reading your post last night about your journey of discovery and it reminded me of my own. Many late nights spent (drunk) slogging away at a computer either lashing out on boards, or looking for the aha bit of information that would prove me right for any and all non-believers. Then an amazing thing happened, I stopped boozing (regular drinking) and things became clear and I did not have that need to project my fear to others. I just learned wisdom to deal with what I can, and leave the rest to fate.
pods
Pods, your journey sounds very similar to mine. I do still get pissed about things I can't control. Like today I stopped by my mother-in law's and she was watching the Today Show. Matt Liar was talking to Johnny Douche and a couple other slugs , and they all to labled Snowden as a traitor. Johnny douchebag said " we have to give up some of our freedoms to protect against terrorist attcks" and I wanted to scream at the S.O.B "Yeah the invasion of privacy worked real well preventing the questionable attack in Boston". Old habbits are hard to let go of when these liars have an outlet like that to spew their propoganda.
We are allowed to have these discussions as long as they are within tightly controlled boundaries.
There is never a question of the underlying power. Just about its application.
And the shallow thinking of most is irritable at best. Why the hell won't anyone ask the question of how this authority was obtained after we specifically told the government that in order for this right to be violated, it must be under the conditions set forth under the 4th amendment?
I do not think that there is a warrant that has the millions of names and the nature of the thing to be seized. And there sure as hell isn't any probable cause for this.
A moot point I know, but I wish I could actually hear or see these arguments being hashed out by others besides all of us crazy people.
pods
Gee Pods, the answer is right there. They are not searching your "papers"- only your electronic words. If we have nothing to hide, then why be afraid? We should thank them for saving us from ourselves, or something like that. /sarc
"Golly, if you have nothing to hide, I should be able to videotape you having sex with yer wife/guy-friend, and then post it on the intratubez!" EVERYONE has something to hide, else there would be little need for clothing/curtains/opaque walls, etc...

to use a sports metaphor (easily digested) those who seek the control are playing the "seam". Ob is just the defender you see to distract you from the intended purpose and most bite on the "trick". It's a standrard ploy and yet for such a sports crazy nation this tactic can't be extrapolated to politics and finance by the masses. What really chaps my ass is the sphere of control the MSM has to trot out flunkies day after day to spread the lies and deceit through talk shows, punditry panels etc AND there's absolutely NO DISSENT from anyone within the MSM sphere that's a strong contrarian voice.
The MSM is being PAID NOT TO UNDERSTAND...
sorry sir, you have to be president (shot gun cocks)...you're dead either way...and don't dare try to end the fed, or any of that spooky stuff we got goin on round here.
When you have the cripps and the bloods fighting it out in the streets, they look pretty much the same to the bystander, but never suggest that to one of the members. The problem is that regardless of stated ideology or objectives, their "ends justify the means" approach pretty much assures they will fuck everyone to get the power they need to do "good". I'm sure there are plenty of true believers in the surveillance industry that are convinced they are doing Gods work protecting us. They refuse to see the evil that they are enabling. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, but maybe that is giving the paving company too much credit.
never mind
until dumbasses like you realize it has nothing to do with any one person but everything to do with a group of people who's self interests are not aligned with your poor working stiff self, who are able to assert their self interests at your expense because they know you do not have the balls to do something about it, you will suffer the same as you ever have while blaming your loser status upon a person who has no relation to your fate other than to provide a visual que for your excuse for losing.
While I agree the dumbasses in this country elected a person who is evil to the core, I will disagree with your charge. If the repukes were any different they would be up in arms over this instead of supporting it. The fact is this started long before Oshithole, but he is just a symptom. It's the system that is the problem.
Anyone else notice that the MSM has been especially harsh on Obammy's administration for the last month or so.
Do you think the MSM suddenly has become the peoples friend? A truth telling machine? Or is this something else?
Listen folks there is a reason the MSM has turned on this administration.
I suspect cheesepope blackmail, a distraction for something else or they are purposely whipping us into a frenzy.
Everyone I know is aware of this NSA thing, of course believing every thing spoon fed to them.
Of course they have been spying on us, but why reveal now?
The revelation of the surveillance state only advances their agenda of fear and control. They want people to shut up, stand down and just go along. We don't have to speculate as to whether they are doing it, now we know, and the result will be outrage followed by self induced silence. "they" are watching.
Unless there is a political Earth-Shift planned which requires elimination of the Old-Guard.
good advice Mr. Drake, and thank you for your services to the cause of freedom!
We already captured him and disposed of his body at sea. I'm sure we traded some Chinese political dissidents that we harbored here for him.
If I were a chinese man, snowden would be an interesting asset in the war on who is the biggest bad guy, the biggest snoop, the biggest hypocrite, the biggest false currency....
hard to say what they'll do but one thing is for sure, he picked China for a reason, and the playing field, the stakes and the risks aint what it used to be
Good advice, from a patriot. If we don't get more people like Thomas Drake, we'll never reverse the rise of the global police state.
Cue mass distraction action...the spotlight can not be allowed to shine on the Leviathan in the room...
Most of the people that voted for him are still quite thrilled with him. They are the Free Shit Army. As long as their free shit keeps rolling in, they could care less. The white liberals are willing to overlook anything and everything he does or fails to do to maintain their belief that they are 'basically on the right track'.
I agree 100%. We had our chance with Ron Paul. This is why I don't resent or blame the government - I blame the shithead sheeple around me. America has turned into an obese ship of fools and I'm trapped onboard.
This is beyond BO and I agree we really need to support 3rd party. Toss all career politicians.
STOP VOTING.
^this.
It took me a long time to get through the "if you don't vote, you can't complain" meme.
Now that I have a clear head, I can see how withholding my vote (which is what I do) is removing my tacit approval of a corrupt and unjust system.
It is not the people I dislike, although I have almost universal disdain for anyone wishing power over me, but the system.
So it matters little WHO is placed within this corrupt system. So what if they will not use the power usurped?
We must destroy this system, not be revolt, but by attrition.
This system thrives and survives on debt.
If we can crash this debt backed system, the government cannot function at the size and scope that it currently does through normal taxation.
Avoid debt, destroy this system.

That was the realization I came to in 1988 during Bonzo's reign. Apolitical at the time, it served me well. The awakening was in increments, just as has been the takeover.
Sign me, political Atheist.
BTW, thanks for the seed source. Enjoying the fruits of my labor immensely.
The Free Shit Army is quickly get a lot bigger once that amnesty bill gets shoved through Congress.
The only aspect of amnest that warms my heart is knowing that it will hasten the collapse.
Forward (over the cliff)!
And, none of the illegal aliens are surveilled by the Negro Surveillance Agency.
Only taxpayers qualify for NSA databanks.
You guys in SC need to GET RID of Miss Graham next year!!!
So, the FSA is a wholly owned subsidiary of the NSA.
Jeez I first read check your six as to mean your six shooter.
I'm not even a gun enthusiast and I thought that.
huh
military pilot lingo for 6 o'clock ....high or low
Six o'clock means straight behind you. Same as "watch your back."
That's why that Hollywood Celefty commercial freaks us out so bad. Still convinced they mean 666....
While it is obvious to many ZH readers I think it still bears repeating the similarities to what is going on in the financial markets... These "people" in finance and politics (they are the same crowd) cannot live with losing/giving up control. National Security or Financial Markets/Economy. Freedom destroys to the crowd that keeps their tight grip. Anything out of their direct control is railed against in a violent, public temper tantrum thru the normal MSM mediums. (Think Jim Cramer or Chris Matthews)
Character and, if they can pull it off, real assasination is par for the course in the battle to control power and make you believe they know best and have it all under control. Trust us.
