"High-School Dropout Snowden Is Lying" Chairman Of House Intelligence Committee Claims

Tyler Durden's picture

That the US "big brother" surveillance state would not keel over and die in the aftermath of the Snowden revelations is hardly surprising. But the means by which the government, and in this case the House Intelligence Committee, have set about defending, legitimizing and promoting full state intrusion into personal privacy is a comic sight to behold.

Enter today's hearing between the NSA Director Keith Alexander, and House Intel Committee's Mike Rogers (R-Mich) and Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md), who nearly a week after the initial Edward Snowden charges have resorted to the oldest trick in the book: calling him a liar.

From the Hill:

The NSA leaker is lying about both his access to information and the scope of the secret surveillance programs he uncovered, the heads of the House Intel Committee charged Thursday.

Emerging from a hearing with NSA Director Keith Alexander, Reps. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), chairman of the Intelligence Committee, and Dutch Ruppersberger (Md.), the senior Democrat on the panel, said Snowden simply wasn't in the position to access the content of the communications gathered under National Security Agency programs, as he's claimed.

"He was lying," Rogers said. "He clearly has over-inflated his position, he has over-inflated his access and he's even over-inflated what the actually technology of the programs would allow one to do. It's impossible for him to do what he was saying he could do."

"He's done tremendous damage to the country where he was born and raised and educated," Ruppersberger said.

Asked how much additional information – including other FISA verdicts – Snowden has in his possession, Rogers said, "No one really knows the answer to that today. I think we will know the answer to that shortly."

Someone will, but not the general public: because it is easy to accuse Snowden of lying when the government can claim the national security exemption when anyone demands to confirm if Snowden is actually telling the truth. In other words, it is our (classified) word over his.

Just to stir it up a little more, and invoke imagery of Daniel Craig in a tux driving an Aston Martin, the hint that Snowden was a double agent is quietly being tested:

Rogers said investigators are also trying to determine whether Snowden has any relationship with foreign governments – something national security officials don't know yet, he said.

If that fails to gain traction, there is always the accusation that he should have just follow proper whistleblowing protocol. No really.

"Some people are saying that he's a hero. He's broken the law," Ruppersberger said. "We have laws in the United States for whistleblowers, for people that think there's an injustice being done. All he had to do was raise his hand. … Under the whistleblower law, he is protected. Yet he chose to go to China."

And when all else fails, go for good old character assassination, and the media's favorite fall back plan: shooting the messenger.

"I hope that we don't decide that our national security interests are going to be determined by a high-school dropout who had a whole series of both academic troubles and employment troubles," Rogers said.

Well, there is a high-school dropout... and then there is a successful community organizer who supposedly was familiar with the constitution, until proven otherwise. Repeatedly.

They are all in deep shit. The media is not reporting it but here is why.

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/06/government-says-secret-court-opini...

In a rare public filing in the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), the Justice Department today urged continued secrecy for a 2011 FISC opinion that found the National Security Agency's surveillance under the FISA Amendments Act to be unconstitutional.  Significantly, the surveillance at issue was carried out under the same controversial legal authority that underlies the NSA’s recently-revealed PRISM program.

...

Everyone who had access to that opinion knowingly continued to break the law in this case it was ruled unconstitutional by the FISC court and they are trying to keep it buried because their justification if brought to light would force the regular courts to take it into consideration if it is out in the public not including the outcry that is going to come once it is made public for the program to be stopped. The courts can't weasel around the issue like Roberts did with Obamacare once it is out in the public.

He who screams loudest is usually the most guilty of parties........

And more importantly

https://www.eff.org/document/fisc-opinion-and-order-granting-effs-motion

FISC court granted the EFF motion to continue the case to get the opinion unsealed even though the DOJ is trying block them from unsealing it.

First the FISC court ruled it unconstitutional back in 2011, then it was buried and continued anyways, they are done once the shtf as far as political career goes if there is any rule of law and justice left in this county. Not just them fucking weasels in Congress but that asshole Holder also is done.

Frankly I don't know if a FISC ruling is the same as regular court, if it is they broke the fucking the law by continuing the program in violation of a court ruling, they all need to brought up on criminal charges. Like I said they are in deep dogshit if the rule of law still applies in this country. We are going to find out if it civil war time over this. You can't as government entity ignore a court ruling and continue breaking the law and be allowed to get away with it. If that is allowed we are fucking done, stick a fucking fork in it, rule of law no longer applies if no one follows the courts, it is every man for himself.

Bla..bla...bla...the NSA Director and those two duffus congressman just came out and stated to the world we hire high school dropouts and give them high security top secret clearance but you shouldn't believe anything he says because he is a high school dropout.

If he is a high school dropout it doesn't mean a dam thing because obviously CIA and NSA thought him intelligent enough to work for them and pay him 122K a year plus benefits. They only have one card to play and that is exactly what they are doing. Create doubt to the American public to try and diminish what he has already released regarding NSA illegal activities and what he will most likely release in the future.

I am betting somewhere is a record of an IQ test Snowden had taken that showed him to be a highly intelligent person thus him working for NSA as a subcontractor.

All they did was just insult Americans intelligence especially those who didn't finish high school for a variety of reasons, many being very valid reasons. What they did was just state if you didn't finish high school we think of you as a piece of shit not worthy of anything and not capable of making anything of your life.

How about they talk about why they think its ok to violate millions of Americans contitutional rights? Even high school dropouts know that as you get the basics of the constitution in elementary school.. Fuckin morons...

Is there a bigger cunt than Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC?

http://tv.msnbc.com/2013/06/12/edward-snowden-is-an-it-genius-says-a-fri...

At around minute 15, he tries to work a Ron Paul hates Israel, blames America for 9/11, and drowns kittens line of questioning in, in a segue so awkward and tacked on, even he must be embarrassed deep down.

I'd comment over there, but what's the point?  These are the people who dismiss every criticism of Obama, and are still irked that we don't have a 1 party post-Republican federal state.

O'Donnell took some time after the Boston bombing to go after RP, too.  Now, I don't think RP is perfect, but he was lightyears better on virtually everything than either Obama and Romney.  O'Donnell isn't a dumb guy, which makes this all the more irritating.  He's purposely twisting what RP had said to try to discredit Snowden.

The problem is, these people will insist that Bin Laden did 9/11 but refuse to believe what he himself purportedly said about his motivations.  Jeff Goldberg and a host of other Israel Firsters have been playing this game since 9/11... .blame bin laden but dont pay any attention to what he said as to his reasons.

Cute.

Just because the other ring of three ring circus is not getting enough attention....

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/06/13/Memo-state-department...

And now we have a third scandal emanating from Hillary Clinton's State Department. A shocking memo obtained by the New York Post says that the State Department hired an "alarming number of  law-enforcement agents with criminal or checkered backgrounds because of a flawed hiring process."

The memo goes on to state that the troubling backgrounds can pose a problem if the agents are needed to testify at trials to assist prosecutors.

“Too many people entering the [Diplomatic Security and Information Management] communities end up as subjects of [Special Investigation Division] investigations and HR adjudications, become Giglio-impaired and can play only limited roles thereafter,” according to the memo.

“Giglio” refers to a US Supreme Court case dealing with jury notification that witnesses have made deals with the government to induce testimony.

Who was minding the store over there? On top of hiring criminals, our consulate in Benghazi was left unprotected and it was State that pushed to turn the CIA talking points surrounding Libya from truth to lie.

And it was just a few days ago that CBS News broke the story of the State Department covering up allegations of internal misconduct, including the solicitation of prostitution, drug abuse, and pedophilia.

Wasn't is just a few months ago that the media was celebrating Hillary as The Greatest Secretary of State In the History of Secretary of States?

I was involved in a jury trial and this cop saw the perp doing the act and ID'ed him.  Had him absolutely cold.  So the defense lawyer starts to cross examine the cop and starts asking him "Have you had any complaints filed against you?" "Have you ever been suspended?"  "Ever have a restraining order filed against you?"  "Do you have a problem with alcohol?"  "Have you ever hit your wife?"  He was just fishing for something, anything, that would give the jury an uncomfortable feeling about the guy so that we wouldn't take in his testimony.  Not a bit suprised that they are going to smear Snowden's name in EVERY way they can think of.

I'd compare this all to Thatcher and Co.; although you might not like them, you always got the impression they were smart, hungry and nasty. Even Boris "I'm so fluffy" Johnson you know is a dangerous & sharp bear under the bluster. These two Congressmen playing this level of politics, when the NSA director is on the hook for perjury is gross incompetence.

"He was not lying" Rogers said. "He clearly only semi-unwittingly said the word 'no' when that was the most honest answer he could give to the question when the truth was 'yes'."

It's a critique of the American Manufactured music industry in which the well known aliens kill off Lady Gaga (after removing a large cricket from her semen filled vagina, I never said their imagery was subtle). The joke is that Lady Gaga attempts to manufacture shock (the meat dress) while they are actually shocking (YMMV, it's not shocking to me, but I suspect for a normative viewer, it probably is). It also helps if you know who these guys are for the pet wild animal references. (You might want to avoid the first three links if you're not into fairly open levels of quasi-Satanic / blood / predator shock, but the last three are safe, and very interesting).

Culture from outside your bubble. I was making a point about how easy Congressmen have it, and are so lazy these days about lying, not facing a hostile or even inquisitive press and so on, tied to an animalistic / graphic theme where the lazy American version gets eaten.

I might also have been throwing a curve ball to people getting too used to common and friendly cultural references in the links.

No need to get so angry Mizzzy....

Snowden has them by the balls and they know it... there was no imminent need for his departure so unless he had everything he needed he would still be there taking notes, copying files and collecting a paycheck. And you can rest assured that the more they squawk the worse the breech has been. Personally I would like to see Obama & Friends absolutely scream. :)

He has either thought this game through very well or he is completely suicidal. You decide. This may help.

Now is the time to have yourself a good chuckle, a glass of Merlot to celebrate and get some fuzzy warm feelings happening... knowing that you know for certain that ... yes... YES!...  there are some good guys still left out there.

Hmmm who to believe... "Chairman of House Intelligence Committee" or "high-school dropout"?

Based on the record so far, I'd advise going with "high-school dropout" for truthiness.

Oxymoron "Chairman of House of INTELLIGENCE Committe"

Anyone see Peter King railing about how Snowden has threatened to out CIA operatives and that is a punishable offense.  Though he hasn't done that yet King is ready to indict him for what he might do.  Can someone refresh my memory on Vallerie Plame? Anyone get busted for that?  Yet the Fox bimbo de jour never connected any dots and let the guy rail on about all the potential damage and he should be arrested just for what he MIGHT do.

According to the allegation, NSA has everyone's phone recorded.....

So, theoretically, snowden could release the phone records and transcription of Mike and Dutch.....

Just to name a few.  Are all these folks automatically suspect and lacking of integrity because they are "just some high school dropouts"  Many high school drop outs have shaped this country and the world we live in for the good.  You should apologize for your arrogance and intellectual dishonesty for starters.  Furthermore should we take a look at a long list of Ivy League graduates that have lied, cheated and stolen from this country and the entire world?  I'm afraid that would be a much, much longer list.  In fact I suspect most politicians at the national level have some form of alphabet soup designation from some of the top institutions the world has to offer and they prove day in and day out for decades that they are, in my opinion, nothing but a bunch of lying, theiving, cheating narcissistic cocksuckers.  So now Dutch and Mike tell us again which group has the least amount of credibility?

Sam Adams and John Hancock were hated by King George as well.

Snowden may be something of a rebel with a cause in the making along with ZH.

Time to come together and start doing. Less talk, more action.

Talk leads to poverty, action leads to results. So many commenters here have great skills, let's find a way to put them all together, and for good use.

Instead ZH, I would ask that you start posting information that is actionable, or start aggregating people and information resources where people can talk less and do more.

People who think this oversexed twink of a Bond wannabe "risked his life" are to applauded for their hyperbole. However, this is nothing of the sort. Thomas Drake and Mark Klein are living nicely despite their sins against NSA. Drake is actually "allowed" to even touch computers. Bill Binney, John Berry and Adrienne Kinne are alive and well, living just fine by most all standards. Kinne even continues her subversive bullshit without anyone stopping her to this day.

So why would Mr. Snowden feel his life is in danger when there is no precedent for fear? As an agent of the Communist government who was called home and had to flee a hostile country when he was found out? Or was he merely an agent of internal squabbles? Why is he so fearful unless he is knee deep in an "international incident"?

Again, there is NO PRECEDENT for this ego monster to be fearful. None. Unless he is too much of a Matt Damon fanboi, of course, and believes it's all just like the movies.

Snowden didn't tell us anything that we didn't already know is possible. And if it's possible for the government to do it, then the probability is that they are doing it.

We are on to the next act of this drama: the government is putting out disinformation to discredit Snowden. O'Reilly is starting to push it.

Snowden threw his life away for nothing. The continual expansion of US government spying of US citizens will not be stopped; it will continue to expand, as it has been methodically expanding through multiple administrations of both parties. We are crossing the threshold into a police state.

Get used to it. It will get much worse. We are living in the end stage of a civilization.

I think this is where Snowden is brilliant.  I wondered why he only released 5 of 41 slides.  I think we're starting to see the answer to that question.  He's giving the NSA brass and the politicians time and enough rope to hang themselves.  They're now saying things that will be impossible to unwind if it turns out the remaining slides contain proof to the contrary.

I SO hope that's what's happening... and if it is, I hope he's able to get them published before he ends up being "disappeared".

First of all, that "protection" claim is BS.  Second, the only people who would have been cleared for the classified info would be those within the program or who knew of the program, like some in Congress.  And those in Congress who did and do know of this who publicly claimed that Obama was taking excessive liberties in his interpretation of the law should have been the whistleblowers, right?  If whistleblowers are so protected, why didn't they blow the whistle?
