Today's Greek General Strike Will Not Be Televized

Tyler Durden's picture

The Greek national broadcaster ERT situation is nowhere near a resolution, and the nation's political stability remains in the balance with  Antonis Samaras’s coalition partners, Evangelos Venizelos of PASOK and Fotis Kouvelis of Democratic Left, appealing to him Wednesday for talks on the future of the TV and radio station, but the premier has so far stood by his decision to close and later reopen ERT, leaving the government’s future in doubt. What is certain to make matters worse is that today, Greek public transport and state services will be disrupted as thousands of workers join a 24-hour snap general strike called on Wednesday by the country’s two main labor unions, GSEE and ADEDY, in protest to ERT's shut down. The claim is that Samaras' unilateral decision was the equivalent of a coup, which of course is not true: one can't overthrow a country in which sovereignty has long since been ceded to the European Commission, and Germany in specific.

However, the market has no reason to worry about cracks forming in its ivory tower: since the journalists will also be on strike, and since the TV station is obviously shut down, there is no danger of a real-time video stream from Syntagma showing the all too well known Athens riots. As for Istanbul, that is another matter.

From Kathimerini:

Buses, trolley buses and trains will not be running at all, while staff on the Athens metro, the Athens tram and the Piraeus-Kifissia electric railway (ISAP) will run a reduced service, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be no metro service to Athens International Airport, with trains stopping as Doukissis Plakentias station as the remaining section of metro route to the airport is operated by the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) whose workers will be striking all day.

International flights are expected to be disrupted between 3-5 p.m. when air traffic controllers are to walk off the job. A five-hour walkout by staff of the Civil Aviation Authority, starting at noon, is expected to disrupt domestic flights.

The general strike, which is the third this year, will also upset public services, closing tax offices and schools, and leaving hospitals to operate on emergency staff.

A protest rally organized by GSEE and ADEDY is to be held outside ERT’s headquarters in Aghia Paraskevi, northeastern Athens, at 11 a.m. The unions called on workers from all sectors to join them to show solidarity for the sacked ERT workers, condemning the government’s move as “unprecedented and provocative.”

There will also be a media blackout as journalists will be on strike.

Nope ~ there will be no 'motions' or 'polls' allowed [unless something was embedded in the original Constitution ~ whereby it's now up to the 'debating society' to arrive at a 50-50% conclusion on it & create the necessary obfuscation & disambiguation]...

~~~
For everything 'new' that comes along... We'll just tell you what to do & think... We have an 'expert' panel of doctorates & Nobel Prize laureates who preside over such things... They're all products of homeschooling & were valedictorians in the educational treadmill of indoctrination, so you should listen to them...
Otherwise, you should work on your jump shot & your cross-over dribble...
In fact, the idea to close the state TV is incredibly ingenious, perhaps far beyond oligarchs' understanding. The golden oligarch rule reads 'you may take almost everything away from the people but don't touch bread and circuses!' Once the official circuses are over the people start searching for alternatives, among which public meetings and face to face communities fit best to cover inter-societal needs, previously mediated by television. Crowd gathering is now a self-encouraging form of public communication and acting.
It seems to me like God himself is charily leading the hands of Greek politicians from stupidity to insanity. One could hardly invent a better way how to unite people.
Huh?
Why wouldn’t  it be good to have a common medium of exchange that is under the control of a select few unelected technocrats that will do “whatever it  takes”, know when they “have to lie, and will confiscate bank accounts  when they think it is necessary?
How else could a free market and price discovery work?
And how else can you forge ahead with the New World Order that we need to protect the elite, allow them to have their way with us and preserve their right to control and steal at will?
Oil.. we are all on a slippery slope.
I am still trying to decide whether I prefer tulips, wampum, or puka shells as a replacement for the current paper medium.
Tulips smell nice but they die.
Wampum and puka string together nicely and can be worn.. kind of like gold.. which won’t be conveniently available in most places soon.
Let's not forget that even when TV stations are running, they pick and choose what they broadcast. Hardly any of the EU/EZ demos/riots/social unrest events have been broadcast live by UK TV news channels, presumably for fear of being accused by government of giving Brits the wrong ideas. At best they include 10 seconds of footage in their evening round up of the day's events.
On another note, in light of recent "relevations" in place since 2001, I find it interesting that no one is talking about the fact that it is still a Federal offense for someone else to open my paper mail.  Why should my electronic communications be any different?  I certainly don't want some computer geek getting my bank information.  WTF?!?!
I'm wondering whether shutting the whole thing down and re-opening a new network actually saves money or whether this is only a move to make the troika's excel sheet happy.
My assumption is a) most of (if not all) the people at ERT are public sector workers and thus are incredibly well protected against lay-offs b) therefore early retirement is the only option. Which then would mean that they keep getting their paycheck (maybe a little less) without having to work.
Widespread concern in the markets about the political developments in Greece - ETX Capital: Investors watching the happenings with the utmost caution - Visible risk for failure of Athens to the achievement of fiscal targets
Manifest is concern in London but also in the relation to recent developments in Greece, under the weight of political deadlock that brought forth the snap lock ERT.
"The markets have resumed to worry about Greece and faced with extreme caution all the latest developments on Greek soil," says Ishaq Siddiqi, strategist at ETX Capital, based in London.
As he explains, investors rephrase serious reservations about the course of the Greek economy, in the shadow of the rapid political developments.
"Investors fear that Greece may not be able to achieve its fiscal targets," he says with a meaningful Ishaq Siddiqi, watching closely from London all that happens in Athens.
Tsipras (SYRIZA): With the closing of ERT government Samara attempted to overthrow the Republic
The "fire" against the government's decision to close the ERT unleashed the President of the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, who was present in the strike concentration Radiomegaro of Agia Paraskevi.
"The public television signal falls only when a sovereign country is occupied by foreign forces or when catalyzed coup democracy," said k.Tsipras, who stressed that what happened Monday night "is unprecedented in conditions of democracy and peace" .
"The government Samaras has full responsibility, because by this symbolic act sought the overthrow of democracy, but also attempted to deliver the information to the private interests of the relationship, and even monopoly" noted Mr. Tsipras, who stressed that "after the fiasco of the success story, Mr. Samaras threw a firework diversion to distract. Only the firework exploded in his hands. "
In his sights k.Tsipra found and k.k.Venizelos and Kouvelis. "The two partners Samaras, his two crutches behind the words. Supposedly complain but continue to support the government. Because that is most feared by Mr. Samaras perspective of the polls, "said k.Tsipras, who called the Greek people in an uncompromising struggle for the defense of the Republic.
"But we all know this government brutality will not fall in the corridors of parliament. Will fall in the streets through the struggles of our people in the struggle for the defense of democracy and social cohesion "claimed the head of SYRIZA.
Disappointing. I was hoping for a full blown revolution followed by the typical European "civil war" out of all this but I guess the PAX brainwashing worked just as well as it did in ancient Rome. Once the people lose their bloodthirstiness, nations lose their edge. A general strike? Please, that's just embarrassing. Get back to work and try to come up with new products.
Erdo?an has set his high-noon for tonight, and is organzing "large rallies" of his own supporters over the weekend, which is code for something or other.
So, expect fun. There's evidence via footage that police have given up any pretense that they're not using the tear gas as an offensive weapon, they're firing so many rounds of CS to actively wound protestors, it probably has a leg to stand on in court as being used as a chemical weapon[1] (CS as crowd control is supposed to follow regulations on # of rounds and requirement not to target directly). A particular one was the use of "advance and fire" tactics on 11th June; approx 3 rounds / sec were coming from the front of the police vanguard, and there was no attempt to not aim directly at protestors.
Heard anything out of Syria for a while? Thought not.
[1]It is immediately dangerous to life and health at a concentration of 2 mg/m3. It is not an accumulative agent in the human body, although it accumulates in the landscape.
