It's On: US "Finds" Chemical Weapon Use Against Syrian Rebels; Military Proposes Arming Rebels, No-Fly Zone

Tyler Durden's picture

The "red-line" has been crossed. The New York Times is reporting that:

  • U.S. CONCLUDES SYRIA USED CHEMICAL WEAPONS AGAINST REBELS: NYT, and
  • NYT SAYS EUROPEAN OFFICIALS REACH SAME CONCLUSION ON SYRIA
  • MCCAIN SAYS U.S. TO PROVIDE WEAPONS TO SYRIAN REBELS

And alongside that finding, as part of (or justification for?) the arming of the Syrian rebels, the WSJ reports that the US Military is calling for a limited no-fly zone inside Syria. The seriousness of this escalation must be put in the context of a desperately-needed distraction for the current administration - which makes the decisions being made even more concerning in their potential for extremes.

Via The New York Times,

American and European intelligence analysts now believe that President Bashar al-Assad’s troops have used chemical weapons against rebel forces in the civil war there, an assessment that will put added pressure on a deeply divided Obama administration to develop a response to a provocation that the president himself has declared a “red line.”

According to an internal memorandum circulating inside the government on Thursday, the “intelligence community assesses that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale against the opposition multiple times in the last year.”

...

“Our intelligence community has high confidence in that assessment given multiple, independent streams of information,” the memorandum said.

...

According to a C.I.A. report, which was described by an American official who declined to be identified, the United States has acquired blood, urine and hair samples from two Syrian rebels — one dead, and one wounded — who were involved in a firefight with Syrian government forces in mid-March near the town of Utubya, northeast of Damascus.

The samples showed that the rebels were exposed to sarin and supports the conclusion that the regime has used the weapon.

In recent days, the British and French government have also asserted that there is evidence that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons.

Via The Wall Street Journal,

A U.S. military proposal for arming Syrian rebels also calls for a limited no-fly zone inside Syria that would be enforced from Jordanian territory to protect Syrian refugees and rebels who would train there, according to U.S. officials.

Asked by the White House to develop options for Syria, military planners have said that creating an area to train and equip rebel forces would require keeping Syrian aircraft well away from the Jordanian border.

To do that, the military envisages creating a no-fly zone stretching up to 25 miles into Syria which would be enforced using aircraft flown from Jordanian bases and flying inside the kingdom, according to U.S. officials.

Watch John McCain and Lindsey Graham pat themselves on the back for just escalating Europe's crusade to get a Qatar natgas pipeline through a US-friendly Syria regime live on C-Span, at the expense of countless lives as mere "collateral damage."

We eagerly look forward to the Russian (and Chinese) re-escalation. Things just got real and are going to move quickly from here on out.

And for those who are still confused...

I agree, and what the fuck does it matter what McCain says anyway. He is not in the Administration, not in the military, and his party is the Senate minority.

Is he even on a significant committee anymore? He's not worth the time to find out. McCain is the poster boy of everything that is wrong with the US.

Hey NSA, it's ok to criticize a senator not in the majority isn't it? Text me.

Time for the magic trick of putting a distraction on the forefront in order to disguse what is happening with Snowden.  Why do the politicians think we give a fuck that some middle eastern leader used chemical weapons on some other middle eastern group.  NOBODY CARES.  IT'S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS.  If the citizens of that country gave a damned they would march in unison up to the authority and take it down.  Plus our credibility is below the Mendoza line when we claim we have proof of some atrocity committed by another country to justify taking some action that the vast majority of american citizens do not support.

In the end, dead is dead regardless of method be it chemical weapon or a really neat unmanned flying robot or "precision" missle strike or a special force team sneaking in the middle night for some execution raid.  Dead is still dead.

Actually, there is a VERY large difference between the NYT headline and the IC assessment: "high confidence" DOES NOT EQUAL "concludes."  The policy response is incredibly different.  Chillax, all.

Putin is not going to play ball, sorry Obama and American Generals.  He's willing to go nuclear, if necessary, to stop NATO from taking over the planet.

Here is what he said only yesterday on June 12:

Putin replied: “If not we, who else? I will rephrase: If not we [destroy them], then [the enemies will destroy] us [Esly ne my, to nas].” Putin added that Russia cannot hope “to work in peace,” because competition in the world is growing in all fields. “This is not an aggressive statement—this is the truth of life."

Bibi & Likud are getting impatient with Iraq/Iran, and are dictating the agenda and schedule to Neocons via their US cousins (NY, DC).  US Big Oil and Qatar are very impatient (having Trump-like hissy fits) about the LNG pipeline.  Obama is trying to be accommodating toward genuine peace in ME, but is frustrating them with his Delay/Procedure game.

They, in turn, are generating scandals and pro-Muslim-Obama imagery, to corner him and force his hand.

and the US used recycled radioactive steel in armaments used in Iraq, (because they're heavier) the outcome is not proven to be gulf war syndrome, but is consistent as far as some medical experts are concerned. in Vietnam they sprayed agent orange, which is ostensibly a defoliant, but turned out to be very deadly. ( VA has since done everything to deny claims )  and in essence a clusterbomb is a chemical weapon because it remains deadly to anyone in the area, including civilians for an indefinite time. when it comes to wmds, dont fuck with the usa.

Intervenion with uniformed US forces would be a disaster - for us. Putain's got ObOzO's number.

Either Shiite or Sunnis fundies are coming out on top of this - they got the juice and the FSA is going to be roadkill once their done killing each other.

Besides the window for possible effective intervenion closed about a year ago.

If my memory serves me correctly, good old Bill Clinton, in the thick of his lttle blue dress stain shenanigans with Lewinsky, ordered the US military to lob a couple of missles somewhere in the mideast area to detract from his troubles at home.

If the Syrians are having a problem, they need to fix it themselves.  Going in there now is like walking into a domestic dispute, where often both sides turn on you.

If Obama goes through with this, knowing the Russians are touchy about this area, is inviting trouble that is none of our business, too expensive to take on and should not be taking life or limb from people charged with "defending" the USA as Syria is not a threat to the USA.

This is just another attempt to meddle in foreign affairs and create a distraction from domestic failures, nothing more. In case anyone missed it Iran goes to the polls tomorrow. Everyone knows US military doctrine since Vietnam is to avoid overt military conflict with any country that has a credible capability to defend itself. The covert proxy war in Syria is already lost, this statement is just another fart from John McCain's sagging ass.

The reality is tomorrows turnout numbers will demonstrate the confidence Iranian's have with their democratic experiment and left to their own devices, however imperfect it maybe, it will improve. We all need pause for thought and look at the way corruption and corporatism has all but killed the most important element of a successful democracy in the West, participation...

Having lived in Iran and spent time in the US I can tell you that in the US you maybe free to express yourself, but it means nothing, your expression is instantly ignored. In Iran you are not free to express anything you want about anyone but if you do it will actually be noticed.

This expected direct involvement of the US military in Syria (and perhaps elsewhere as it escalates) is a war of choice by the Obama Government, not a war of self defense, since nobody has attacked the United States. It is therefore not a war between the American people and people of another nation, but a war between the governments of the nations, funded by taxpayers' money. Syrian actions - and possibly those of Russia and Iran - will be in self defense.

A common and natural result of an undue respect for law is, that you may see a file of soldiers, colonel, captain, corporal, privates, powder-monkeys, and all, marching in admirable order over hill and dale to the wars, against their wills, ay, against their common sense and consciences, which makes it very steep marching indeed...

Now, what are they? Men at all? or small movable forts and magazines, at the service of some unscrupulous man in power?...

The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies. They are the standing army, and the militia, jailers, constables, posse comitatus, etc. In most cases there is no free exercise whatever of the judgment or of the moral sense; but they put themselves on a level with wood and earth and stones; and wooden men can perhaps be manufactured that will serve the purpose as well. Such command no more respect than men of straw or a lump of dirt. They have the same sort of worth only as horses and dogs. Yet such as these even are commonly esteemed good citizens. Others, as most legistators, politicians, lawyers, ministers, and office-holders, serve the state chiefly with their heads; and, as they rarely make any moral distinctions, they are as likely to serve the devil, without intending it, as God.

It might surprise you to learn that there are millions of Israelis and even a great many American Jews, who vehemently disagree with the policies and practices of their "governing regime", i.e. Benjamin 'Bibi' Netanyahu and the conservative Likud (pro-Zionist) party he belongs to.

This is common knowledge in Israel and Europe, but a total 'secret' in the US and Canada.  It's 'secret' because its discussion is suppressed in the N. Am. media, because the media ownership has dwindled to about 6 (from >50 owners about 35 years ago), and these owners are indeed Globalist/NWO types and in full lock-step with Bibi.

This is a moral cancer of both the Christian and Judaic people, insofar their political leadership has been hijacked by a very-well organized and funded subset, that is running things via leveraged ownership/control:  Zealots help each other and position themselves to take over the leadership of key companies (L1 = Leverage 1 ), and then the industry they're in (L2).  The same principle applies to taking over branches of Government.  Then, when they have reached L2, they can 'steer' the 3 branches of Government in their direction --> L3.  The sitting 'President' or 'Prime Minister' then becomes a hostage/puppet of these Zealots, and the military then takes orders from these hijacked politicians.

The fact that these Zealots call themselves 'Zionists' or pretend to be 'Jewish' is purely for operational convenience and efficiency -- since the Jewish community is small, but educated, successful and reasonable malleable, insofar they can be relied upon to "circle the wagons" (wrong cultural metaphor, but you get the idea) when presented with an external existential 'threat' (real, imagined or manufactured).  They have, in essence, also been hijacked.

And that is how a democracy gets taken over by a globalist group of Zealots.  These Zealots will not relent until the vision of their hierarchical leadership has been realized.  Therefore, both Jews and Christians are struggling against a common, hidden enemy from within:  Globalist Zealots (NWO Neocons and group of Bankers), who seek to reshape the world in their image.  Getting us to fight each other only helps them.

We need to expose these psychopaths and sociopaths, who are the real global terrorists, w/o succumbing to destructive name-calling and infighting in our ranks.

Sarin
Tabun

And a bunch of other agents, some binary agents.

However, I have been in the warfare business for a very long time. I have never heard of a in-bore detonation on a mortar weapons system.
