It's On: US "Finds" Chemical Weapon Use Against Syrian Rebels; Military Proposes Arming Rebels, No-Fly Zone

Tyler Durden's picture

The "red-line" has been crossed. The New York Times is reporting that:

  • U.S. CONCLUDES SYRIA USED CHEMICAL WEAPONS AGAINST REBELS: NYT, and
  • NYT SAYS EUROPEAN OFFICIALS REACH SAME CONCLUSION ON SYRIA
  • MCCAIN SAYS U.S. TO PROVIDE WEAPONS TO SYRIAN REBELS

And alongside that finding, as part of (or justification for?) the arming of the Syrian rebels, the WSJ reports that the US Military is calling for a limited no-fly zone inside Syria. The seriousness of this escalation must be put in the context of a desperately-needed distraction for the current administration - which makes the decisions being made even more concerning in their potential for extremes.

Via The New York Times,

American and European intelligence analysts now believe that President Bashar al-Assad’s troops have used chemical weapons against rebel forces in the civil war there, an assessment that will put added pressure on a deeply divided Obama administration to develop a response to a provocation that the president himself has declared a “red line.”

According to an internal memorandum circulating inside the government on Thursday, the “intelligence community assesses that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale against the opposition multiple times in the last year.”

...

“Our intelligence community has high confidence in that assessment given multiple, independent streams of information,” the memorandum said.

...

According to a C.I.A. report, which was described by an American official who declined to be identified, the United States has acquired blood, urine and hair samples from two Syrian rebels — one dead, and one wounded — who were involved in a firefight with Syrian government forces in mid-March near the town of Utubya, northeast of Damascus.

The samples showed that the rebels were exposed to sarin and supports the conclusion that the regime has used the weapon.

In recent days, the British and French government have also asserted that there is evidence that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons.

Via The Wall Street Journal,

A U.S. military proposal for arming Syrian rebels also calls for a limited no-fly zone inside Syria that would be enforced from Jordanian territory to protect Syrian refugees and rebels who would train there, according to U.S. officials.

Asked by the White House to develop options for Syria, military planners have said that creating an area to train and equip rebel forces would require keeping Syrian aircraft well away from the Jordanian border.

To do that, the military envisages creating a no-fly zone stretching up to 25 miles into Syria which would be enforced using aircraft flown from Jordanian bases and flying inside the kingdom, according to U.S. officials.

Watch John McCain and Lindsey Graham pat themselves on the back for just escalating Europe's crusade to get a Qatar natgas pipeline through a US-friendly Syria regime live on C-Span, at the expense of countless lives as mere "collateral damage."

We eagerly look forward to the Russian (and Chinese) re-escalation. Things just got real and are going to move quickly from here on out.

And for those who are still confused...

it's too late.

The UN already said they found the chemical weapons the REBELS (Al Qaeda) used so spreading this news to match every ruse will defeat it in full public view.

The war will happen regardless but the lie will be obvious at every turn

So let me get this straight. The Syrian government is winning the war against the rebels. They are serious defeating them with the help of Hezbollah. Then they decide "Hey, let's use chemical weapons even though this will bring in the Americans against us". Well that certainly makes sense, not to the Syrian government of course, but rather to the ignorant American sheeple.

How very "Wag the Dog" of them. So Syria alledgedly used chemical weapons, huh? How about the fact that the U.S. military uses depleted uranium daily and has for years. That isn't a war crime? I guess waging nuclear war with (not so much) depleted uranium isn't as 'war crimish' as using chemical weapons. I'm guessing John ("what POW's were left behind?") McCain and Lindsey ("kinda like Lohan but not really") Graham are wetting their pants tonight thinking about how many soldiers they can send to their demise.

When I was young there was talk of an anti Christ.

Whether you agree with religion or not, I don't think Christ walked around with a sword chopping peoples heads off, to the contrary he was a man who promoted love.

Now I am wondering if there is an anti Christ forming in front of our very noses.

Protestants, late to Christianity, surly just turned their swords up side down to form a cross of sorts.

Northerners always stayed heathens, true catholic faith
reserved for subjects worthy of subjugation as in the colonies.

Luther is where the trouble starts.

Two rebels. Two. That’s right, just two. Out of how many rebels?

Even an average lawyer could get Charles Manson off with this limited amount of evidence against him. But, they’re going to escalate it into a multi-billion dollar conflict anyway. I guess it’s not like they were reaching for an excuse or anything. (sarc off).

The war over there will be over here in no time.  The NSA threat lists, (neatly compiled, Red States first), have been hard copied to the White House and distributed to DHS.  DHS is not ready yet so if they come after Tea Party types and Libertarians now it may just be a pretty good contest.

They did not want to move this soon, but things, domestically and internationally, were unraveling too fast.

John McCain has to stick his nose in everything, always sounding  very tough and determined. Thank God he's on the case, or it would be curtains for us all.  Hillary should have kept her yap shut 3 years ago when she threatened Asaad that his days were surely numbered. How'd that threat work? Uh...it didn't. Then Obama doubled down with an obvious bluff of a Red Line threat against chemical weapon use.

Note to leaders in Washington: when you issue explicit warnings to foreign nations, it kind of means you have to follow through.  We're not in the schoolyard anymore where you can shout "Callbacks". So now America looks like a giant putz on the world stage short of escalating a minor conflict into a major war. Sending armed marines or enacting a no fly zone is an Act of War. That kinda means that the other side will aggressively fight back and recruit additiional allies like....oh.. say Russia and Iran.

There wouldn't be a crisis in Syria if the rebels weren't backed by the relentless Saudi/Qutar push for Islamization. The slaughter has been equally wrought by both sides. Asaad is a bad guy, we get it, but cripes the rebels are even worse. This responsibility to protect(R2P) doctrine has gone off the rails.

The neocons and the activist left are neck deep in it together, working opposite sides to the same end. Here's another note to you geniuses: War aint  cheap, in blood nor dollars.  Also people in that part of the world hate our guts; like really, really hate. Like we're going to hunt you down, blow you up, for the next 50 years kind of hate. Thanks a lot.

The Brits "confirmed" the use of chemical weapons back on April 13, but that was before our former constitutional law professor president had to admit to the fact that his administration has been shitting all over the Constitution for years.  So now Barry proves that his election in the first place was as full of shit as a 25 year-old writing a fictional non-fiction autobiography about all the accomplishments a relatively unaccomlished 25 year-old can write about considering his whole appeal was that he thought intervening in the Middle East was a bad idea and that a war on terror was like a war on tinkerbell or the easter bunny.  It's no coincidence that slick Willy himself said Barry would be a damn fool for not finding a distraction in order to hire a few more relatives of major reporters and editors and raise some more cash for House Dems.

Wag that fucking dog, Mr. President. There's nothing quite like comitting the same mistakes over and over and over and over then getting $500k a speaking engagement and somehow increase your net worth by a $100mm or so.  The Chineses, Ruskies, and I'm sure Goldmanites somewhere are laughing all the way to Syrian blood bank.

Fuck me, they've had 2,000 years, my vote is for a massive shrug: "Well, you had your chance, bored now".

Not even joking here: the entire region is boring as shit, wastes resources, hates women, is stuck about a thousand years ago and is an anathema to what humans can do (yeah - building shitty cities on the Western expertise ain't counting. You build it yourself, we're cool - you farm it out and bask in it and have no idea about ecology? Fuck it, glass). And, more importantly, it's stopping the rest of the serious players from actually sorting anything out, and <whatever higher power you want> we need to sort things out soon enough. Sorry Israel, you're great at tech, but hey, you chose to put yourself into shit land and acted like a cunt for the last 50 years, not my problem. The Temple Needs To Be Destroyed, I think that's your Messianic prophecy?

Yeah, well. We can do that for you. I just want a plate of glass the size of Europe at the centre to make sure the rest of you fucking tools grow the fuck up. Call it the monument to the 20th Century, and move on.

The other powers can look on the plate of glass, then grow the fuck up, turn their sights inward, and start building for the 21st century, which none of you stupid fools are doing. Bunch of fucking primates.

p.s. That junk was fast. Watchers - here's a tip: provide answers instead of wasting time policing. Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock, you've had enough time already. Three? Four? Years and nothing changed. I ain't the problem here, darlin (although I will be). Also: learn to parse standard rhetorical satire you muppet - if you want to really go to war, don't fuck around, and do it. Perhaps war in Syria is Bernanke's exit strategy.  By starting a war in Syria while selling off all those bonds, Bernanke (and the WH and Congress) will be able to blame the stock market crash on the war.  It will enable Bernanke to keep his legacy of having saved the economy while providing Janet Yellen the opportunity to save it again after everything bottoms out and the war ends.

Is it the same "team" that said there were WMDs in Iraq?! LOL

And here is the joke if one is so inclined:

Everything that those in government do is for money and power and we know war is their biggest money "earner"--"War is a Racket."

But, even now with two plus a few wars going, even that's not enough to satiate them so off to Syria and soon Iran. Socialpaths!

It's all lucrative until the guillotines come out.

Recent reports claim that the Neo-Con establishment in Washington is putting on a full court press to get the administration to go into the Syrian war militarily and bomb the Syrian Army. This pressure has been building to the point where even Bill Clinton warned today that Obama is looking weak on Syria. The well known Neo-Cons are the same group who engineered the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Syria has long been on their list.

This war on Syria has long been planned and is lasting much longer than Washington imagined it would. This is mostly down to the foreign nature of most of the Syrian Rebel Army. A leak from German Foreign Intelligence reported in major German news papers today said that 95% of the Syrian Rebel Army was of foreign origin and that only 5% were native Syrians. The Gulf states, Libya and America have channeled Sunni Jihadists and Al-Qaeda members from across the Middle East and North Africa into Syria. Their crimes are well known.

Recently the Syrian Arab Army and Hezbollah have handed these foreign terrorists a series of major defeats. Syrian troops have killed Libyans and Chechens in large numbers. But the FSA fighters come from all across the region, with Iraqi Sunnis now entering battle armed by the US special forces.

Russia seems unlikely to surrender their support for Syria as a secular state. China is fence sitting, watching Washington solwly going broke on it's world wide military operations. They may not yet be ready to step in an back America's enemies. But Russia seems to have drawn a line in the sand.

America wants to attack NOW for several reasons. One, the FSA have been heavily defeated in battle. Russia is about to arm Syria with more modern weapons. The US needs a war to cover up at home for it's crimes against civil and free Americans. Obama and congress have committed such crimes against the public and the economy is set to collpase again, a war spreading from Syria to Iran and Lebanon can be used to silence the American public and allow the crimes against the constitution to continue and allow Israel to capture more land in the Golan and in Southern Lebanon where water is to be had.

The winners are the US defense industry, Israel and the American Neo-Con movement. The lossers are the tax payers and formerly free Americans. Your government is now becoming just another NAZI state, a criminal gang who will suppress the people and destroy the economy in the service of the 1%, Israel and the US military industrial complex!

War is coming, based on lies, greed and a blood lust born of easy victories against poorly armed opponents. Hopefully Russia will arm Assad quickly and with more modern weapons. Otherwise the killers in Washington will murder in huge numbers and call it freedom fighting.

No wars, no war profiteers. And that's what made America what it is today. So stop whining about wars and get back to your defense sub-contractor jobs everybody.

Remember, if you need FBI clearance to do the job you do, you're part of the problem.

Assad is our friend ... he keeps the lid on the real Crazies ... how did it work out for us with Muammar Gaddafi, Hosni Mubarak, The Shah, Saddam Hussein. Are we safer? Are the people in these countries safer? Is the world safer? No . no . and No.

The last two presidents have been so, so stupid but John McCain and Lindsey Graham make them look smart. We are just lucky to still exist

'Stupid is, what stupid does?'

The Tiger and Fox Fable: 'A very old Chinese folklore tale of unambiguous cunning?'

*{The Fox is NSA<  ???   > The Tiger is John Q Public} names have been changed to protect the 4th Estate.

"the fox finds himself face-to-face with a tiger who wants to eat him for lunch. the fox decides to outwit the tiger by claiming that he is the king-of-the-forest. to prove it, the fox invites the tiger to follow him throughout the forest to show that all the animals are scared of himself, the fox exclaimed. as the pair go through the forest, every time they happen upon an animal, it runs away in fear. the tiger is astonished to see the animals all run from the fox, never realizing that they were actally running away from the tiger himself. humbled, the tiger leaves the fox alone. the fox is,... as usual, amused by his own cleverness."
