NSA Foiled NYSE Terrorist Plot, We Now Learn

Tyler Durden's picture

To think it only took the world's most (in)famous whistleblower to get the NSA to disclose that it had heroically managed to prevent terrorist attacks involving the New York Stock Exchange (we supposed they refer to the Manhattan-based TV studio and not the actual exchange where the servers are now housed in Mahwah, NJ) and the NY Subway. Because whereas there was a time in the past when the various US secret services would scurry at the opportunity to disclose their expertise to the general public, now it is a false negative that is supposed to disprove a positive (pervasive spying on the US population is good for you because...). Of course it takes one non-false positive to disprove a false negative, namely the Boston Bombers, who as far as we recall, used cell phones to communicate. But so much for details: now please praise the NSA, and also comply with the Administration's push to rescind the second amendment. Or is Obama no longer pushing for "arms control"?

From NBC:

National Security Agency surveillance programs helped disrupt plots to bomb the New York Stock Exchange and the New York subway system, an FBI official told Congress on Tuesday.

The official, Deputy Director Sean Joyce, said that the programs also linked an American citizen in Chicago to the 2008 terror attacks on hotels in India and to a plot to bomb the offices of a Danish newspaper that published a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad.

Gen. Keith Alexander, the NSA director, told the committee that the programs had helped stop more than 50 “potential terrorist events” since the Sept. 11 attacks. He said he would provide classified details of all of them to the committee Wednesday.

“I would much rather be here today debating this point than trying to explain how we failed to prevent another 9/11,” Alexander said.
Joyce gave limited details on the foiled plots. In the stock exchange plot, he said, the NSA monitored an extremist in Yemen who was in contact with an operative in the United States.

In the subway plot, he said, the NSA intercepted an email from a terrorist in Pakistan in 2009 who was talking with someone in the United States about perfecting a recipe for explosives. He said that person turned out to be Najibullah Zazi, who later pleaded guilty in the plot and is in federal prison.

So when does the epiphany occur?

The Boston Bombers were known by the NSA/FBI/DEA/ATF Orwellian Complex. The Complex didn't want to stop them because their little piss-ant ploy wasn’t going to kill anyone, or if it did, only a very, very few - and it would produce tremendous energy for locking down the entire country with the side bonus of a practice run on instituting a military-style takeover accompanied by warrantless searches.

Of course, they needed the bombers dead - which the guy in lockup might as well be, because you are never going to hear a word out of him again.

They got rid of the older brother with a simple gross assault of him - nobody has found any slugs he fired before getting massacred by the cops following him . . . and the younger brother - well, they just put 20 slugs into the wooden boat and lied that there had been a "shoot out."

Unfortunately, Allah was watching over him, and all they did was injure his throat, which originally was told the American public was his attempt to commit suicide, and not a slug put in his throat by a federal agent to silence him.

Of course, damn it, he was unarmed, but who is going to go after our "heroes" who saved us from WMD pressure cookers lying about a "shoot out" that never occured, and the attempt to murder the other bomber.

As for the friend of theirs who got offed - that was an FBI hit man who put seven slugs into his body.

First the lie was that he had a gun, then he had a knife, then he was an expert boxer. Interestingly, the two state officers that were with the FBI hit man just happened to leave the room together so there were no witnesses to the FBI murder. The thin blue line works together that way . . .

So it's all what the Orwellians wanted - a big media event with lots of high-drama visuals, a chance to play with their armored vehicles, fun raiding everyone's home in total disregard to the Constitution ( a great way to focus group the sheeple's reaction to a military coup), and the thrill of killing other humans - all to show us what it feels like to live in "terror" of the "terrorists."

But for only $100-billion a year to the Military-Industrial-Orwellian Complex we will "be kept safe" - except when they allow another "burning of the Reichstag" to pump up the sheeple again.

The reality is that those in power don't want a terrorist event to take place on their watch. Can you really blame them? That is why they will use any and all means to prevent such crimes. Do you want to be the president consoling relatives of the dead, while people scream, "WHY DIDN"T YOU DO MORE".  No, and neither do they. I know because this was told to me by someone on the hill after 9/11. You can see the logic.

Does that mean we should shred all of our liberties in the process? Personally I don't think so. I think there is a reason why the al-qaeda types don't target countries like Iceland. America could learn a lot if it just knew it's place. It's really that simple.

The US should show some balls, like scuttling SCUD missiles when they are discovered as smuggled cargo to Yemen, instead of claiming unproven "wins".

They should release all the NSA monitoring and conversations that highlight their FAILURES, then they could argue they need more capabilities.

How America works:

House Select Committee On Intelligence Propaganda

In the United States Congress the House Select Committee On Intelligence is "the primary committee in the U.S. House of Representatives charged with the oversight of the United States Intelligence Community". The committee is the elected legislative part of the government which set and controls the limits of the executive.

It is currently holding a open hearing about the recent disclosures of various activities and programs of the National Security Agency.

Congress hearings have titles. What is the title of the currently ongoing hearing?

a. To Evaluate Recently Disclosed NSA Activities, and The Necessity Of Intelligence Gathering Reform

b. Structure And Legal Limits Of Domestic Signal Intelligence Activities

c. How Disclosed NSA Programs Protect Americans, and Why Disclosure Aids Our Adversaries

d. Role And Limits Of The NSA Within The Intelligence Community

e. Why Data Protection Is Hindering Intelligence Collection, and How More Data Collection Will Expand Our Freedoms

The correct answer is c. How Disclosed NSA Programs Protect Americans, and Why Disclosure Aids Our Adversaries

Issuing such propaganda even in the title of the hearing is certainly not "oversight". It is pandering to the executive agency in question. It is therefore no wonder that the Senate Intelligence Committee even prohibits a former staffer to explain the oversight process to the media. The way we do, or don't do, our job is secret. Trust us and give us your money (and data). One wonders what those agencies the committees are supposed to control and investigate have in their vaults about each of those committee members and their families.

Aside from that the purpose of this post is to point you to a piece which looks a bit deeper into the whole intelligence nonsense. Why do we have these agencies and why have they grown into such enormous beasts?

here's whats wrong. we have red light cameras, mostly just really busy intersections. now the public is giving the citie(s) some pushback, people who get these tickets have to pay up to $500.

at the same time the police have a license plate camera system, which scans license plate numbers at parking lots and anywhere actually, and they put the location and the license plate number into their database. random data gathering.

while the red light cameras save lives, the cities are cancelling that program, while they continue to use the system which records license plate numbers and stores them in a database collection system. the second program does nothing to protect motorists, which the red light camera program does, and it has nothing to do with enforcing the law.

That's a big reason law enforcement costs have skyrocketed and cities are going bankrupt. They hoped all that BS was going to yield more $$$, but the total costs of their extortion racket exceeds the fines in many cases. Real crime like rapes and muggings continue to increase.

California has increased the fines astronomically. Don't try to park in one of those many empty handicap stalls unless you're prepared to pay REALLY BIG.

and the license plate collection database is outside the public view ( license plate cameras are used to recover stolen cars - for the insurance companies) yes the fines for running a red light are high, the cost of being torpedoed at an intersection a lot higher. the long term plan is to take all the substandard drivers off the road, seniors and teenagers who like to text, and anyone with a ba of .05, while at the same time they want to leave the bars open until 4AM. which just makes my point, the law enforcement answer to crime is prior restraint, with less enforcement of the criminal action. ask a cop how you stop rapes and muggings, he'll tell you find these guys, and put gps bracelets on them. the cop on the beat is an anachronism. cops don't stop crime, prior restraint laws and data surveillance do.

Somehow the M-word boogeyman disappeared from the lexicon and the fed militia plants (Olson, Trochmann, Southwell, Jimmy Johnson, etc) "retired."

Its unfortunate that a good article like this brings out the wackjobs and conspiracy theorists.

The fact is that the state has a legitimate right to protect its citizens. The problem is that that the state has overstepped an important boundary. There are no legitimate checks and balances to unfettered access to anyone's information, and that is very, very dangerous. This needs to be reigned in, otherwise this has the very seeds of America's destruction at some point down the road. Most sensible people would not object to metadata being captured, used to identify legitimate threats (which would involved oversight and strong warrant tests), then investigated... with the remaining data being completely purged blank within a given time frame.

Its easy to sit behind a keyboard and talk brave - hoping for the end (what ever that means), or some sort of revolution. This is utter nonsense and senseless thinking. The best thing anyone can do is contact their politicians and put pressure on them. For every phone call that goes in, it represents the public opinion of so many constituents (yes, they track this), and they especially take note when you are a first time caller.

The resilience of US democracy will be shown in what comes out of this... and I think these checks and balances will emerge. Democracy is in the lifeblood of every American.

If I want to read a whack-job, all I have to do is re-read your post.

So did you come up with this out of some 6th-grade civics book? Or is this the quality of propaganda now produced by the dumbed-down education currently employed in the Orwellian Complex?

First, you are totally off about how the system works. Politicians pay lip service to constituents. So long as they don't build a "coalition of opposition" by taking stands on hot topics, they will stay in office forever. The current re-election rate for Congress is about 97%.

What will come out of this is nothing. The Military-Industrial-Orwellian Complex holds all the data - which means they have all the dirt on Congress, the judges, the officer corps, the academics, the union bosses, the journalists . . . anyone and everyone with any access to political power.

And if you think they are afraid to use it - notice how Petreaus is now back to being a good little hack for the Complex - showing up at Bilderberg to talk about his plans for a One-World data gathering operation. (Yeah, tell me again how the collection of metadata can't hurt you? That's how they shut down his affair.).

You are either the most naive, simple minded person in the world today, or a troll for the Complex.

Either way, you are a useless twit who would rather whore his soul than defend true freedom.

Since the Second Amendment was brought up, it's time for a refresher:

A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Founding Fathers did not want the hoi polloi to have arms with no restrictions whatsoever.  If you don't like it, amend the amendment.

I disagree. I (and many others) have always read it to mean, "Because a well-regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free State, the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." In other words, because militias are by definition bodies of ordinary citizens called into service when needed, the right of these citizens to bear arms in their daily lives (arms that they'll need when they're called to serve) shall not be infringed.

The militia business just confuses the issue. See, but even they had to munge the language to make it *just* ambiguous to get it in. You can probably think of dozen ways to phrase it better that would leave no doubt:

"Any singular weapon individually carryable and made available to this nation's millitary, and all such things needed to make such weapon fully functional, shall be available to all free citizens in good standing through commerce, and, under penalty of treason, no government shall make a law, impose a commercial penalty, tax, or otherwise take any other action in contrary to this amendment."

Of course, in this case, everyone will soon be guilty of a felony and ineligible, which is why the other ones need bolstering.

The operations of secret intelligence agencies aiming at the manipulation of public opinion generally involve a combination of cynical deception with the pathetic gullibility of the targeted populations. There is ample reason to believe that the case of Edward Joseph Snowden fits into this pattern. We are likely dealing here with a limited hangout operation, in which carefully selected and falsified documents and other materials are deliberately revealed by an insider who pretends to be a fugitive rebelling against the excesses of some oppressive or dangerous government agency.
