“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.” Edward Everett Hale, A Man Without a Country

The Man Without a Country" is a short story by American writer Edward Everett Hale, first published in The Atlantic in December 1863. It is the story of American Army lieutenant Philip Nolan, who renounces his country during a trial for treason and is consequently sentenced to spend the rest of his days at sea without so much as a word of news about the United States.

When a so-called "major power" nation's "laws" are ignored by other nations, it should tell the world that the "major power" has become a pariah on the world stage. Similar to the Soviet Union during the Cold War or Nazi Germany. Perhaps this can be an indication to the US citizens still under the impression that they live in a legitimate nation. The people of this country are being entertained to death and need to awaken. Once they do, the heads will begin to roll. This is an issue that transcends the left-right paradigm. People are beginning to awaken! Snowden is a hero!

The mainstream media keeps pushing this lie that Snowden is some sort of spy who is on the government's hit list because he stole sensitive documents or something. All Snowden did was expose the fact that the NSA is spying on every single American citizen, without warrant and without probable cause.

Edward Snowden should not be the story here - it should be the NSA and other government agencies who use their technology to violate the rights of American citizens. You cannot violate the fourth amendment every day and blame it on "keeping us safe." This scam doesn't work anymore now that everyone in America knows that there is no real threat from "terrorism" except the terroristic acts of our own agencies against us.

All Snowden did was expose the truth and I think he should be commended for it instead of being black-bagged and kidnapped. The lid is finally blowing off of the government corruption now and there's no holding it back. They can assasinate the whistle blowers one by one, but it's like a boiling kettle now. The steam is escaping, there's nothing they can do about it, and they're in a blind panic trying to control the narrative of information.

It was worth me posting my rant against these Criminals again.

Do they also cover live feeds from Russia Today or Al Jazeera? If yes, I want to thank them for not peppering air time with commercials about panty liners with wings and the newest model from Chevy that will explode on impact but does ensure the label of patriot will be etched on your tombstone. No, not a mention of breakfast cereals drenched in sugar and dyes, nor a mention about putting on your best cool clothes and dancing at a hot night spot that will ensure your popularity, and possibly up your chances of getting laid.

You have a point. If Snowden is a fake and China let Snowden go, that means they're not biting the bait. I was curious when I heard Snowden saying that NSA hacked all servers in China and HongKong, BUT NSA did not get any military intelligence. SO NSA could plant Snowden to let China knows that its military secrets are still safe, when in fact NSA has all China's military specifications. Russia is not biting either, if Snowden in fact goes to Ecuador.

It doesn't matter. I don't care about Russia or China. I only care about the constitution of USA  which is shredded to bits. So my point remains. Snowden , faked or not, should be made a hero and NSA should be accountable to the constitution. End of story.

i got an idea for a comedy the other day.

Jesus has a fucktard brother he hasnt seen since early childhood. the TWIN brother hears of his siblings ability to draw a crowd. where there is a crowd, there is coin! after loosing his bankroll in a failed falafel house, he makes the trek across the desert to see his brother. so he shows up, just in time, to be considered the resurected son of god. he tries to explain, but its hard not to take advantage of a situation with everyone moaning and dropping to their knees at freefall speeds.

who would do well in the role of "Jesus"?

vince vaughn, bradley cooper, or zach galifianakis.

@Fonz

I think he is more legit than the fake backdrop being constructed by our gov't.

The professional spinners are out in full force. They have been ever since Snowden touched down in Hong Kong. RT did a review of how the US MSM is handling Snowden, and looking at the perponderance of lies out there, I don't think they would have reacted as they did if Snowden was fake. Everyone but the janitors at the WH are on television berating him, accusing him of crimes he didn't committ, and even questioning his emotional state. When someone like Feinstein can go on national television and be allowed to smear Snowden with the accusation of'mental problems' [like she doesnt have any] and the interviewer [paid shill] sits there and nods his head in agreement, it tells me he is legit. Even the babushkaed Pelosi tried but unfortunately for her there were live people in her audience and she got booed. This kind of smear campaign is going on 24/7 on every channel and in almost every newspaper in the USSA. I would guess no one in gov't bothers to read the foreign press, because if they did, they would know they look like a pack of wild apes.

Next up they will be reading quotes from dead presidents that 'prove' Snowden is a traitor. Oh wait, they already did that.

Just talked with a Spanish friend who knows some Ecuadoreans here, and she talked to them about Snowden -

On the one hand the Ecuadoreans were pleased that President Rafael Correa and Ecuador would offer Snowden asylum, on the other hand they thought it was 'stupid and crazy' for Snowden to go there.

They said Ecuador is so poor, many people would sell info about Snowden to help kidnap him etc for only a few hundred dollars ... and that tho the government is leftist and anti-US, there are many right-wing pro-America types in Ecuador who would think it actually good and right to help kill a dissident hunted by the USA

---

Funny there are about 700,000 Ecuadoreans who are refugees from Ecuador in Europe

Most are economic migrants escaping the poverty there, but some are genuine political refugees who received political asylum in European countries - the last coup d'état in Ecuador was only 13 years ago, in 2000

Well if there was another coup and Snowden was still around he could head to Bolivia etc

Orwell wrote "1984" to point out the direction the West was headed, most especially the UK. He was not writing about the Soviet Union, no, he expected a drift into an even more sinister gulag state, and that the West was where it would arise. USA is looking more and more like that state, and the UK is even worse.

Snowden has his reasons, but if he wants to live, Russia should be his destination, with FSB security and maybe a Russia Special Forces "Spetsnaz" bodyguard, Obama would have to try a drone strike. China is investing billions in infrastructure in Ecuador for a long term relationship. To sup with the devil, use a long spoon, and I can see very long spoons all around me, here down south, any time you care to mention. Only grateful that the "rich" countries are throwing away all their credit, manhood, and friendship, in Central Asia and the Mid East.

I am pretty sure that Putin is not exactly rolling out the red carpet for this kid. Maybe initially, but I would be scared shitless. There also may a point where he outlives his usefulness to Putin and I would not want to leave my fate in his hands when that moment arrives. He needs to stick around and win the crowd, however possible. The longer he does the better chance of him getting out of this in one piece.

I'm still of the opinion that this whole script has been carefully written and the actors are out of central intelligence casting.

I mean this is too comical to not be anything but a huge CIA op to punish the NSA for making Patraeus out to be nothing more than an oversexed frat boy...

Why did the WH wait until just the right moment to embarass Patraeus?

How long had the WH had the NSA goods on Patraeus.

How long will this distract the sheeple from Benghazi, IRSgate and the hundred other scandals plaguing this inept and bumbling WH.

In the intelligence world just remember paybacks are hell.

Indeed, Ecuador makes little sense

CIA agents are everywhere in South America, hit men are easily hired ... Ecuador is logical if Snowden felt sure he wouldn't be a target of the CIA ... Russia, China, Cuba with their internal security would be much safer based on the threats he says he feels

It somewhat goes with the idea that Edward Snowden is a 'limited hang out' deception op ... why did corporate media pump Snowden, when the previous five-plus NSA whistleblowers were all marginalised on 'conspiracy' sites and their material was quite explosive ... like the material by the NSA's Russell Tice that was on ZeroHedge the other day

Snowden was pumped and promoted by Mika Brzezinski, daughter of Trilateral Commission pooh-bah Zbigniew Brzezinski ...

Who himself described the big Wikileaks dump with Julian Assange as an intel operation serving US interests, filled with 'planted' material along with 'chickenfeed'

Veterans Today just ran another piece raising deep suspicions about both Snowden and Assange

Noting that both of them are very restrained about Israel and Israeli companies and the Israeli agenda ... despite the fact how Israeli companies are at the core of NSA's activities and Snowden's work

Like many ZHers, I would like to regard Snowden as heroic and legitimate ... but there are some troubling loose ends, starting with how he was pumped by corrupt major media and CIA-tied people like the Brzezinskis, and improbable elements in his CV

Certainly do wish Snowden safe from American clutches ... which indeed does not sound like Ecuador

I have noticed two things about the commentary on Snowden.

1. ZeroHedge is the only large site that shows close to unanimous Snowden support.

2. On other sites, most who call him a traitor appear to be older, 40+, while supporters tend to be younger, gen y and millennials.

If I am correct, the supporter demographics seem to map fairly close with Ron Paul supporters.

Apperances can be deceiving.

Painting an entire generation with the same brush is tantamount to calling a 'TRUE PATRIOT' like Edward Snowden a "traitor."

The new USSR (United States of Secret Repression) has become a nation of hypocrits. The Wall street/Washington murderous, traitors/criminals receive rewards, while a "stand up and be counted" hero like Snowden is vilified and assassinated by these same low lifes, with cooperation provided by their lap dogs in the captive Main Stream Media.

Sun, 06/23/2013 - 13:46 | 3684130 kahunabear

Not trying to paint an entire generation, there are plenty of outliers. Only trying to get a feel for the general demographics and whether there is a fissure happening between generations that might make a difference in the future.

Also, understanding demographics is not tantamount to anything. If you disagree with my assessment, tell me how you see the demographics.

If there are plenty of outliers then, by definition, they wouldn't be outliers (just sayin').

As for the fissure between generations, simply type "generational gap" into the search bar at the top-right of this site and get comfortable in your chair.  The gap is widening.

I believe no two people share all the same views about everything...and that demograpics (like economics) is not an exact science and will be more or less representative given the issue.  For example, demographics may prove largely accurate with views on SS but not so much with Edward...hence my support of OLI's original comment.

Speaking as a first wave (b.1946) baby boomer, the only fissure I can detect is the one fomented by the power elite, redirecting public anger to create animosity between generations and away from themselves.

No jobs? Its those old farts that refuse to retire! Pension deficits to high. Its all those old farts who outnumber everyone else!

The power elite say nothing of failed economic programs instituted by them so they may further enrich themselves, yet drive the older generation to continue working well past the point they wish to.

To say nothing of the older generation and their employers contributing their entire working careers, into their pensions, only to discover that succesive corrupt regimes have stolen all the contributions!

Don't fall for the old split and devide and set each other against their fellow citizen trick.

Speaking as a supporter of Ron Paul (even though I'm not an American),  I have never been able to understand the mindset of socialists or statists - Britain and Europe are full of them - or whatever other label one prefers to describe people who mysteriously believe that government is the solution to everything and therefore should be given ever more power and taxpayers' money to feed itself.

Corruption soon follows.

There is irrefutable evidence available going back generations which proves that most problems are actually created or made worse by government involvement, by playing out its own agendas of social engineering, economic manipulation or simply incompetence. Whether it's wars, economic crises, foreign relations, employment etc, government is invariably at the root of the rot.

It is for this reason that I have always supported small government with limited powers which is directly answerable to the people of the country where it's elected. The best way of controlling government is via a strong written constitution that is upheld by independent supervision, but even that is not failsafe as we see under Obama and previous presidents in the US who spend their time trampling over the US Constitution.

Only when a large majority of people come to realise that government is an evil construct which needs to be kept in a cage will global society recover and prosper. That won't happen any time soon because there are simply too many people feeding at the trough of government largesse, which of course is one of the corrupt ways that ruling elites use to gather support for malfeasance.

The recent history of Ecuador is quite volatile, typical South American country, episodes of military rule, lots of economic and currency troubles. They even adopted the US dollar as their currency for a while, leading to a recent coup d'état just in the year 2000.

However progressive and positive the current leadership in Ecuador, it is intrinsically a bit of an edgy place for a refugee from the US, with little effective safety from US agents and hit men ... hmmm

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/jun/21/surveillance-contractors...

Six of the largest government contractors doing “Top Secret” work for the National Security Agency and other U.S. intelligence agencies have given more than $16 million to lawmakers since 2007, according to Maplight, a firm that tracks political donations.

The biggest donors were Lockheed Martin, whose employees gave over $5 million; Boeing, Inc. whose workers chipped in more than $4.5 million; and Northrop Grumman, $3.3 million.

SAIC, Inc. and consulting giant Accenture each gave more than a million, while Computer Sciences Corporation, with $600,000 and Booz Allen Hamilton with just over $81,000, bring up the rear.

The issue has come under renewed scrutiny after Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old contract worker from Booz Allen, fled the NSA facility in Hawaii with a still-unknown number of Top Secret documents about the agency’s surveillance and data-gathering programs.

He has been leaking providing information to the Guardian newspaper.

The $16 million figure covers campaign contributions from the six companies’ employees and Political Action Committees, from the beginning of 2007 until the end of last year.

Congressional Republicans got more than Democrats, but not by much — $9 million to $7 million.

By far the largest recipient of campaign contributions was GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, who got more than $420,000.

All six of the companies included in the figures also have contracts with the Department of Defense.

Democratic Rep. C.A. “Dutch” Ruppersberger, whose Maryland district includes the Fort Meade headquarters of the NSA, and who is the ranking member of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, received the second most in contributions, with just over $225,000.

Ecuador suffered under the US led neoliberal policies for decades.  Ecuador actually had 8 presidents in 13 years until Rafael Correa was democratically elected in 2007.  Ecuadoreans are noted for lively civil disobedience when government oversteps their boundaries.

Rafael Correa is a leftist who was educated in the US.  He is an economist by profession.  Since being elected he has reduced poverty from about 65% to 30%.  All things Required for life are cheap..food, propane, water, rents, local bus fares are .25.  Literary is now around 92%.  Education and healthcare are free.

The US had a military base in Manta but Correa did not allow renewal of the lease.  There is no US military presence in Ecuador.

Ecuador is a beautiful country with wonderful people.   Being there is like being back in the 1950's in the US.

Snowden is a "honey pot" plant.

His purpose is to help US intelligence ascertain current levels of political dissension within the United States, and around the world.

Certain US levels of surveillance have been escalated during this "operation" to be more sensitive to "Snowden" Polarization" for lack of a better way to put it.

Make no mistake, Snowden has polarized American political opinion.

I disagree.

Snowden has become a "lightning rod" for those who think the United States government is currently overstepping all legal and Constitutional boundaries in security.

What a person thinks of Snowden is of immense interest to the United States government.

It makes no difference whether Snowden is a willing or unwilling plant.

What you are unknowningly advocating is what is known as the "Blunt Object Approach".

However, what is taking place with Snowden is a surgically precise operation.

One way to see this is to watch what the MSM is doing with it.

Snowden is a targeted intelligence gathering tool.

Sure, Moscow is cold, but the Russians are pissed off at us - and it is a much thicker briar patch for Snowden to hide in.

Can we slow down everyone. After 9/11 we were mad at the government for not putting together information it had. Now the government is trying to do exactly what we were mad at it for not doing: It is collecting and analyzing all information in advance. All other countries are also spying on everybody else. My only problem is IF this govt uses this info to harass people (like Obama and the IRS).

How much money did Snowden take from the CIA? How long did it take him to grow a conscience? Anyone who didn't already assume that the fascist gubbermint along with the nazcrack asswipes weren't recording every single thing is an idiot. All Snowden did was to wake up the stupid assholez who didn't know any better. Judging from the outrage around here I'd say we have quite a few in our midst. If you use fascist communication of course they are listening and recording. Damn, they probably have satellite infrared of people having sex too. If you're paranoid turn off the cell phone and modem and put tinfoil on the ceiling of your bedroom. Duh.

Of what value is citizenship if the government lets anyone and everyone cross the border, and then spies on all of us?

If they really wanted to protect us they would have closed the borders and physically protected us.

Instead, we have porous borders, porous rights to privacy and speech, and a government trampling the Constitution while charging someone exposing their spying with spying.

Therefore, their goal must be control and the furthering of the police state versus safety of citizens and upholding the Constitution.

"After 9/11 we were mad at the government for not putting together information it had. Now the government is trying to do exactly what we were mad at it for not doing"

No, "we" were mad that they couldn't connect the dots using the intel infrastructure they already had and the fully adequate information they already had using it.  But, as always, instead of incompetence and turf battles between bureaucracies being admitted as the cause for that, it was because they didn't have enough money and assets, the usual claim.

Now, at least a trillion dollars later, we have a turnkey police state infrastructure we don't need.  One that didn't stop the underwear bomber, the shoe bomber, the Times Square bomber, the Fort Hood shooter, or the Boston Marathon bombers.  And, typically, even though it was business security cameras that revealed the identity of the Bostom Marathon bombers, there's a call for more city-government-owned cameras in Boston.  Money!

this infrastructure is actually much more useful after the fact. obviously they can't prevent jack shit but they are fairly adept at ferreting out the culprits afterwards.

Don’t use Cuenca to Quito flight via TAMES. Thought I was going to die back in late 90’s. We flew through the mountain range and reached Quito in under 10 minutes. Once you saw the cabin door burst open at takeoff , alarms went off from the cockpit in Quito descend mode, and the captain was pushing a commercial airplane to the limits. It made landing in the old Hong Kong airport seem like child’s play. True story!
