17 Signs That Most Americans Will Be Wiped Out By The Coming Economic Collapse

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder of The Economic Collapse blog,

The vast majority of Americans are going to be absolutely blindsided by what is coming.  They don't understand how our financial system works, they don't understand how vulnerable it is, and most of them blindly trust that our leaders know exactly what they are doing and that they will be able to fix our problems.  As a result, most Americans are simply not prepared for the massive storm that is heading our way.  Most American families are living paycheck to paycheck, most of them are not storing up emergency food and supplies, and only a very small percentage of them are buying gold and silver for investment purposes.   They seem to have forgotten what happened back in 2008.

When the financial markets crashed, millions of Americans lost their jobs.  Because most of them were living on the financial edge, millions of them also lost their homes.  Unfortunately, most Americans seem convinced that it will not happen again.  Right now we seem to be living in a "hope bubble" and people have become very complacent.  For a while there, being a "prepper" was very trendy, but now concern about a coming economic crisis seems to have subsided.  What a tragic mistake.  As I pointed out yesterday, our entire financial system is a giant Ponzi scheme, and there are already signs that our financial markets are about to implode once again

Those that have not made any preparations for what is coming are going to regret it bitterly.  The following are 17 signs that most Americans will be wiped out by the coming economic collapse...

#1 According to a survey that was just released, 76 percent of all Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.  But most Americans are acting as if their jobs will always be there.  But the truth is that mass layoffs can occur at any time.  In fact, it just happened at one of the largest law firms in New York City.

#2 27 percent of all Americans do not have even a single penny saved up.

#3 46 percent of all Americans have $800 or less saved up.

#4 Less than one out of every four Americans has enough money stored away to cover six months of expenses.

#5 Wages continue to fall even as the cost of living continues to go up.  Today, the average income for the bottom 90 percent of all income earners in America is just $31,244.  An increasing percentage of American families are just trying to find a way to survive from month to month.

#6 62 percent of all middle class Americans say that they have had to reduce household spending over the past year.

#7 Small business is becoming an endangered species in America.  In fact, only about 7 percent of all non-farm workers in the United States are self-employed at this point.  That means that the vast majority of Americans are depending on someone else to provide them with an income.  But what is going to happen as those jobs disappear?

#8 In 1989, the debt to income ratio of the average American family was about 58 percent.  Today it is up to 154 percent.

#9 Today, a higher percentage of Americans are dependent on the government than ever before.  In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau 49 percent of all Americans live in a home that gets direct monetary benefits from the federal government.  So what is going to happen when the government handout gravy train comes to an end?

#10 Back in the 1970s, about one out of every 50 Americans was on food stamps.  Today, about one out of every 6.5 Americans is on food stamps.

#11 It is estimated that less than 10 percent of the U.S. population owns any gold or silver for investment purposes.

#12 It has been estimated that there are approximately 3 million "preppers" in the United States.  But that means that almost everyone else is not prepping.

#13 44 percent of all Americans do not have first-aid kits in their homes.

#14 48 percent of all Americans do not have any emergency supplies stored up.

#15 53 percent of all Americans do not have a 3 day supply of nonperishable food and water in their homes.

#16 One survey asked Americans how long they thought they would survive if the electrical grid went down for an extended period of time.  Incredibly, 21 percent said that they would survive for less than a week, an additional 28 percent said that they would survive for less than two weeks, and nearly 75 percent said that they would be dead before the two month mark.

#17 According to a survey conducted by the Adelphi University Center for Health Innovation, 55 percent of Americans believe that the government will come to their rescue when disaster strikes.

Just because you are living a comfortable middle class lifestyle today does not mean that it will always be that way.

If you doubt this, take a look at what is going on in Greece.  Many formerly middle class parents in Greece have become so impoverished that they are actually dumping their children at orphanages so that they won't starve...

Scores of children have been put in orphanages and care homes for economic reasons; one charity said 80 of the 100 children in its residential centres were there because their families can no longer provide for them.

Ten percent of Greek children are said to be at risk of hunger. Teachers talk of cancelling PE lessons because children are underfed and of seeing pupils pick through bins for food.

If the U.S. economy crashes and you lose your job, how will you and your family survive?

Will you and your family end up homeless and totally dependent on the government for your survival?

Get prepared while there is still time.  If you do not know how to get prepared, my article entitled "25 Things That You Should Do To Get Prepared For The Coming Economic Collapse" has some basic tips, and there are dozens of excellent websites out there that teach people advanced prepping techniques for free.

So there is no excuse.  You can trust that Ben Bernanke and Barack Obama have everything under control, but as for me and my family we are going to prepare for the giant economic storm that is coming.

I hope that you will be getting prepared too.

On the other hand if you want them to get the message you could always have Russian Intellegence deliver it for you... no wait... that didn't work either...

ALL commercial Insulin formulations NEED refrigerated storage, so without available storage, your Insulin - dependent Diabetics are in for a tough time. If they have an alternative energy source (i.e. complete or some degree of grid-independence) things immediately look up for them, but how many Metropolitan dwellers have this capability?

Then we have those who really DO need CPAP, and those who really DO need their oxygen concentrators. The IDD crowd might get by using the old ammonia-cycle absorption refrigerators (popular with boat and caravan owners), but those needing ventilatory support at home will be in a much worse bind.

FInally - we all know Hospitals (and most larger Health Centres) do have their own generation capacity, but such capacity is really designed for "emergency" use only - and their fuel stores (usually diesel) are not that substantial, being intended to provide cover for hours, maybe a day or two at most. Certainly no longer than 7 days. Need more fuel - see below . . . . .

With the loss of Grid power, we'll also lose all those nice "invisible" services that you note - water, mains gas (electrical pressurisation and distribution management) sewerage, rail services (no power for points / signalling), telecoms (Mobile / Landline / Internet) and the ability to provide efficient bulk transport - since distribution planning is all performed via the Internet these days for "Ease and Efficiency" reasons.

Not exactly a rosy picture is it - since reliable availability of electrical power is really the "glue" that holds our modern, IT Infrastructure dependent society together.

I'll say it:

Fuck the NSA!

You boys and girls (General Alexander) need to follow your oath:

"I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic {emphasis added}; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

I have a better chance of getting killed by a testosterone laden SWAT Team issuing a no-knock warrant at the wrong address and killing me first then asking questions later - than I do by some spiritually challenged terrorist.

The Constitution of the United States is currently being trampled by the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch.  Get busy.

Some thoughts on the Edward Snowden NSA media blitz.

What has Snowden revealed that we didn't already know or that hadn't already been leaked in the last 10 years.  If you do a search engine query of US Government Domestic Spying how many hits will it show?  What if you add the word "illegal" to your search?

Why didn't China or Russia want to keep Snowden in their countries for further questioning?  I mean if he really had super-secret NSA stuff, wouldn't they want it?

Why didn't the government controlled media broadcast the other whistle blowers on illegal US Government Domestic Spying that have been speaking out since 2002, and earlier?  Why do they want to make sure EVERYONE now knows they are being watched by the government?

Why are Americans so ready to accept this media created hero at face value, when they know that the CIA has been using the media for years to manipulate public opinion?  Is there ANYONE left in America (other than Texas) that can think for themselves?

Will Texas now secede from the Union, seeing that there is no brain activity left outside its borders?

As far as I can tell, Snowden has revealed little but confirmed a great deal.

What exactly is happening here is TBD, so I will hold my judgment until I have definitive proof, but I don't see any reason why I should jump to the same conclusions as you have.

I'll confirm that there is a similar situation with Gainesville Coin.  Not quite as extreme, but close enough for .gov work.

Last order took three weeks, and some correspondance.  It wasn't until I questioned whether or not they actually had the metal, and suggested that they settle my order with cash equivalent + 50% default fee that they sent it out.

They claim it was lack of shipping personnel, but that seems kind of unlikely given the current situation.

That being said, I would still endorse them as a reputable dealer.  They're BS'ing hard right now, but with the rediculously low spot price, I don't blame them for fudging a little to stay afloat through this- I'd do it myself, in that position.

The Refiner will even purchase back at 1% below... So 4% per month profit regardless what the price is. Pretty slick.

There's far too much quality programming on the TV, and far too much catch-up to do on social media for it to be possible that a disaster is pending.  Maybe once everybody gets caught up on their tweets and status updates, or in a break between seasons of Hells Kitchen or DWTS or The Voice or whatever, then maybe a disaster can happen.  Not now.

One of my oldest and dearest friends and I are poles apart on what's happenning in the world.

He's brilliant in other ways, just not so good in avoiding the kool-aide.

We started this discussion on 3/16/2008.  The next day Bear Sterns shut down.

So, for example, to this day, he claims Bear never went bankrupt, implying it was no big deal instead of the latest domino.

He sees the ecomony growing and invests accordingly.

Mind blowing!

Treaty of Tripoli, 1797

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen,—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

U don't have to have a firearm to survive, clean water and food first, other than that, keep a low fucking profile. About %60 of the population or more will expire during the first 6 months. As an RN, dialysis people and diebetics go quick, people who require meds to survive next, people who spend their time watching television next.

Got half way through that and lost interest.

There are other Countries besides America, and since only a relative few were hit by the deliberate EMP devices, then the balance of power would immediately shift to those other Countries, not slowly drift as the book suggests.

Once America is "effectively neutered" by an EMP event (accidental or deliberate) it'll go downhill for the USA and its citizens far faster than the book suggests. Remember US Foreign Policy has made a LOT of enemies, mainly in Countries which were unaffected by the EMP strike. Countries that would have NOT taken too kindly AT ALL to the random nuking of North Korea and Iran, which was glibly mentioned as almost a "throw-away" line in the book.

So that's the plan then... the Obama Adminstration & friends only have to make it safe and secure to the end of 2 months when 75% of the problem is gone before sending in the army to combat and mop up the remaining citize... errr... terrorists.

Perhaps that's why 76% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck?

I doubt it, but I make sure that every dollar that goes into the bank via direct deposit, comes straight out as cash.

The bank thinks I'm a "VIP", though I could care less if they crash.  They don't hold my cash unless I put it there for an online transaction, usually to make a payment or to buy silver and itty bitty quantities of gold.  Even then, the bank is owned by the Chinese.

I pay NO fees for anything.  So I can pull cash out anywhere, and I no longer have to make up occupations for large cash company deposits.

In fact, it just happened at one of the largest law firms in New York City.

Which is a good start.

In fact, only about 7 percent of all non-farm workers in the United States are self-employed at this point.

Which is at record lows...

It has been estimated that there are approximately 3 million "preppers" in the United States.  But that means that almost everyone else is not prepping.

How can they when they have no savings??

and nearly 75 percent said that they would be dead before the two month mark.

Bullshit. In those 75%, how many are so fat, they wouldn't eat anything for a month and be alright?? Or are they too dumb to stay alive (collect drinkable water/keep sanitary conditions) even if they not have to worry about food?

Soon enough the PPP of the American middle class will be as low as the Chinese middle class PPP.

All these stats, in nominal $ are worthless.

You are probably correct. A single gun of whatever type has limited uses for mob defense or hunting. But as I don't deal in the 'most people' trade, my battery of firearms (and the friends, loved ones and neighbors who have agreed to man them) have already proven their worth. I have venison in my freezer right now. And last night I ate tasty rabbit stew with veggies canned from last years garden. The chickens are safe in their deluxe coop. And 16 guinea fowl are about to be loosed on the ticks and give a noisy warning when anyone or thing arrives on my property. Next summer I'll add some feeder pigs. When I gave myself a bad cut on my finger a month ago, I put in 12 stitches myself and skipped the doctor visit. My home is my bug out location. But if I have to fly, I'm fairly ready for that, too. Funny thing is, I don't really consider myself a prepper- just cheap! And a long-time backpacker/hunter.

"A single gun of whatever type has limited uses for mob defense or hunting."

Wrong.  I'm a retired Marine.  Put any firearm and ammunition for it in my hand and I can quickly dispatch enough of a "mob" to to least discourage them.  Most will run away in panic.

As for hunting, sit next to a tree quietly long enough and food will walk within range.

Do not underestimate the firearm in a trained hand.
