Presenting Inflation...

Tyler Durden's picture

In the last two years, according to Intuit, Americans are reaching deeper into their pockets to cover family-related expenses. Given the current concerns over dis-inflationary pressures, we thought the following infographic might highlight just where that hidden liquidity-/credit-fueled inflation is leaking out.

I think if instead of sending our kids to daycare (+65%) that we gave them construction (hand) tools - cut down on electric consumption - (utilities + 35%) that they would stay active (health insurance +111%) while creating positive value (+118% kids activities, 2% toys, 3% kids) which would improve our home asset prices (-27%) they would learn a trade (education +39%) while learning on the job (tuition  + 70%). a hundred years ago there were no child labor laws, and we built a pretty good nation, and places like India are following the example. utilities are higher, while energy is conspicious in its absence therefore it must be labor costs associated with energy that make up most of the rise in Utilities.. so let's put the kids to work.

The two there that surprise me are groceries and utilities. In the UK both have risen by far higher percentages in two years (water, sewage, electricity, gas charges).

And of course one has to wonder how official CPI is down at 2.5% or whatever, when consumer prices are obviously rising much faster. The actual inflation suffered varies between age groups; with older people getting hit more heavily due to the higher proportion of their income being spent on such things as heating/food etc, whilst the iPod generation gets hit less because they don't pay the bills and spend their dosh on gizmos.

CPI: just another government lie.

My gut reaction when I saw the report was similar- and really, my measured response isn't much different.

Here's what I've observed.  Energy is dramatically higher, but food has been stagnant or slowly inflating.  But there's more to the story- the prices don't change much, but the portions do.  When they count them up to make the report, the 16oz. V 14.5oz can is never mentioned, along with another million examples of stagnant price coupled with decreased volume.

Like Twain said, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics.

And on education, why student loan reform won't be coming anytime soon. Can you say Obamacare, the gift that keeps on taking.

http://www.campusreform.org/blog/?ID=4817

The Affordable Care Act is set to cost students enrolled in the government’s loan program $8.7 billion in extra interest over the next decade, according to a report published by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

If savings were kept inside the loan program, instead of transferred to Obamacare, as some Republican senators are suggesting, they could allow the Department of Education to lower student interest rates to 5.3 percent from 6.3 percent, according to the CBO.

The nearly $9 billion being used to fund Obamacare is derived from $61 billion the government says it will save by administering student loans in-house.

Late last month former secretary of education and ranking member of the  Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) seized on the diversion of the funds as one solution for lowering student interest rates, which are set to double on Monday.

“The Congressional Budget Office estimates that if we applied that $61 billion savings to student loans, we could have reduced the interest rates to about 5.3 percent and save the average student $2,200 over 10 years,” said Alexander, speaking from the Senate floor.

Under the current plan, which was brokered during last minute negotiations over Obamacare in 2010, $39 billion of those savings will go towards Pell Grants, $10 billion towards deficit reduction and $9 billion towards funding the health care law. The remainder will be used for administrative and other purposes.

Speaking from the floor, Alexander said he believed all of the savings derived from efficient handling of the student loan program ought to be applied towards lowering interest rates for students.

“That $61 billion ought to go to the students who are getting the loans,” he said. “That is my view. That is our view.”

But, in the same exchange, Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), who is chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, suggested Republicans alternative motive was to defund President Obama’s landmark healthcare legislation.

“I will be honest about this,” he said, speaking to Alexander on May 8. “$9.2 billion went to other health care programs, including requiring dependent coverage in the health care bill.”

“I just have to ask a question,” he said  “[A]re we having a health care debate here or an education debate? I thought we were talking about education. We are talking about whether student loan interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans are going to double on July 1. Now it has morphed into some kind of big health care debate.

Harkin also said the diversion of the funds was justified because Obamacare would benefit students.

“How many students now are covered under their parents' policies until they are age 26?” he asked. “[S]ome of this money was used to invest in that or community health care centers.

In a floor speech earlier this month Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also pointed to the provision as one contributor to high interest rates on government student loans.

“Rates are going up, and the tuition is going up so [students] have to pay back more at a higher rate … all because of something young people had nothing to do with — and that’s the passage of ObamaCare,” said McConnell.

Neither the CBO or the Department of Education replied to requests for comment from Campus Reform.

It's misleading to label these data as reflecting inflation. It should be labelled as changing in spending. For example, it implies that tuition is up 70% in two years - there's no question that it's up, but nowhere near that much on average -- heads would roll.

More likely, Mint users represent a demographic of 30- and 40-somethings who are changing their spending patterns as they age - retraining themselves or enrolling kids in private school or college.

The same problem applies to groceries - rising grocery costs are underrepresented because people switch to cheaper alternatives as prices rise, or their savings dwindle. Their overall spending rises only 6%, but they're eating cat food instead of steak.

I notice and have noticed that anything government regulators can regulate goes up in price. I suspect a lot of the inflation is regulatory inflation. The powers that be really, really, don't want you to see that because they are afraid they'll lose the ability to sustain and grow the "phoney, baloney jobs."

It had been several decades since I had anything to do with a Sam's Club and they didn't have an online presence back then.  They have tried to expand their customer base by offering smaller bulk units than they used to, also special discounts and other gimmics.  One thing that surprised me is that online they are offering a lot of bulk freeze dried products that ordinarily I'd think would be aimed at the extreme surviavalists.  I get the feeling a lot more people are worried about running out of food and are stocking up on stuff that doesn't need refrigeration.  Poor man's gold.

The child rearing expenses are so sad.  They are a window into the female psyche.  Most of them are pointless.  When women have kids, many of them suddenly decide that they MUST have certain things.  It is a status issue, not a need.  I think it must be built-in.  Even my mom, who is totally not into stuff, went berserk thinking that we, her kids, had to have particular bits of crap.  They are full of unusual hormones, they are going nuts, something must be done, and that something is a purchase.  They are dissatisfied and miserable and the answer is a Baby Bjorn carrier and a Volvo.  And they lord it over one another, often.  I opted out, so I shouldn't judge; maybe I'd be just as bad.

It took me a long time to understand my mom's crazy spending when my brother and I were young.  I finally realized and asked her:  "You did all that buying of stuff because you thought you ought to, didn't you?"  Yes, that was it.  She really felt guilty if we didn't have every bit of junk available.  My whiny greedy brother didn't help things.

I have a friend who is 26 y.o. with an infant.  Her baby daddy (hard working but very badly paid engineer; 50k per year in the Bay Area) doesn't want to marry her; they live together, are broke; their parents help.  She isn't stupid but she wants MORE MORE MORE; she knows it's destructive but she simply can't be satisfied with the fact that she has the amazing option of being a full time mom (with grandparent babysitting) for her infant's first year.  There must be more!!!!!

Contentment is rare.

Men are absolutely just as bad re spending, but the triggers and the junk purchased is different.

I cook from scratch, but am sometimes fooled.  Once a year or so I will buy a prepared frozen item; perhaps pad thai or cheesecake or pasta with a cheese sauce.  It looks so appealing in the picture!  It tastes TOTALLY DISGUSTING, and nothing like food.  It is better to have a bowl of homemade popcorn with olive oil on it, than almost anything purchased.
