How The NSA Collects Your Internet Data In Four Charts

Tyler Durden's picture

When it blew the lid open on the NSA domestic spying scandal in conjunction with the Guardian, the Washington Post released the first batch of slides revealing the preliminary details of which Internet firms cooperate in secret with the NSA, unleashing a firestorm of lies and denials by these same private companies (not to mention the administration), whose collaboration with the US government was subsequently revealed to be of symbiotically and mutually beneficial (think massive government contracts and classified data kickbacks in exchange for confidential customer data).

Last night, WaPo released the latest batch of slides given to it by Edward Snowden who appears to have been very busy downloading as much internal NSA info as he could, during his three months at Booz. This time we learn all about the PRISM "tasking" process - or the detail of how the NSA goes about "incidentally" spying on America's citizens (because as much as it is a headline grabber, the NSA spying on the EU, the G-20, and other non-US entities, is after all its job).

From the WaPo:

Acquiring data from a new target

This slide describes what happens when an NSA analyst "tasks" the PRISM system for information about a new surveillance target. The request to add a new target is passed automatically to a supervisor who reviews the "selectors," or search terms. The supervisor must endorse the analyst's "reasonable belief," defined as 51 percent confidence, that the specified target is a foreign national who is overseas at the time of collection.

Analyzing information collected from private companies

After communications information is acquired, the data are processed and analyzed by specialized systems that handle voice, text, video and "digital network information" that includes the locations and unique device signatures of targets.

Each target is assigned a case notation

The PRISM case notation format reflects the availability, confirmed by The Post's reporting, of real-time surveillance as well as stored content.

Searching the PRISM database

On April 5, according to this slide, there were 117,675 active surveillance targets in PRISM's counterterrorism database. The slide does not show how many other Internet users, and among them how many Americans, have their communications collected "incidentally" during surveillance of those targets.

"come on home to the belly of the beast." this was an information dump accident waiting to happen and the damage control has been a disiaster. I know if I were a Congressman (with approval ratinngs the lowest in the History of the Republic) I would want to know "what they know about me." Senator Olympia Snowe who is one of my VERY few post 9/11 heroes defended the right of your real name and real address data to stay secure inside the postal service by saying famously and wonderfully "you have a right to send anonymous love letters through the mail." there are people who still care for our freedoms(and many in the world who yearn for them yes?) in my view. i think Mr Snowden should come home and let that calm voice be heard...and maybe someone in DC will listen first instead of just blithely declaring "he and all the others are enemy combatants."

If you’re a Congressman or a Senator, and you know NSA is spying on you, because it’s spying on everyone in the Congress, who’s your potential best friend?

Somebody who can go up against the NSA.

And who might that be?

The CIA.

Increase the NSA's budget tenfold. CIA and FBI and everyone else, too. Do it. Hyperinflate if necessary. Deficits don't matter. See what happens.

I can say this because I 1) don't have anything worth taking, and 2) am no use to anyone but myself.

It'd be great if I could get a contract deal on this. I'd even let them put cameras up at Casa de Croesus. There's a lot of things that my internet browsing, and metadata won't tell them.....that I'd be willing to share for the right price.

Their idea of hot chicks is somewhat underwhelming.  Look at the two honey pot matta hari's Petreaus sold out for.  The Lebanese chick with the Irish name and the somewhat preppy chick/beltway social climber (Paula Broadwell aka c**t).  Both of them had b**b jobs and they were nothing special.

The Russians at least had Anna Chapman who looked good in makeup but without makeup should could have been any chick in the midwest.

So if it is your job, dear NSA, to spy on me, since I am located overseas, I may as well save you some hard work on a sunday morning, by outright telling you what I am doing:

I am cogitating!

Cogitation, my lads, is that process by which the wise make space inside their minds for more ideas. And, boys, ideas are normally sold by volume, not by weight. It's best to let them settle, so one can find more room at the top.    ;-)

To be frank I still find it quite amusing that the sheeple are actually shocked by these stories. I mean for fucks sake it was pretty bloody clear this was going on from the onset... wasn't it?

Use a decent Linux distro (no - not Ubuntu - apart from being crap it tracks you too), Firefox or one of it's equivelants, ghostery for blocking, startpage or equivelant for searching. No friggen skype (there are open source plug ins instead) and you're pretty much good to go.

And no the ancient "Linux is hard to use" might have been an excuse (even if an extremely poor one - what is your personal life worth to you?) 20 years ago but these days it's easier to use than M$. I put it on an old computer for a relative in her late 70's a few years ago and she prefered it to such a degree that she insisted her new laptop come not with Windoze but linux. No shit.

I'm sticking with Slack for now - which is what I started on in the 90's so it may be a mid life reminiscing thing; I did the whole Gentoo experiment for  the speed advantage and choice of setup but after a few years realised it didn't cut it given the extra 'housekeeping' that was required. Zen is bloody good and quick, as is Sidux. For Newbs (of which the above mentioned relative was one) I suggest Mint.

It's no secret. "Sidux e.V." does still exist, but the focus changed to the distribution of open source software, away from developing it on our own. The developers have gone to "Aptosid" or "Siduction", the former being distributed by the Sidux e.V., but the latter being what to look for if you want to just replace Sidux with minimal effort. As I said, it's being developed by the usual suspects, including some former members of Sidux. Sidux and it's comfort is not completely lost - it just has another name: "Siduction"

(By the way, I regard "Mint" as a fairly good choice, too.)

An attempt to put this whole thing into perspective.....

The depth of involvement in spying between these large named corporates and the government is not casual or trivial as they would have people believe. The relationships are far too technical for that. They're obviously relationships which are the result of many meetings/discussions (face to face and probably in writing) and executive decisions over a long period. These have resulted in the creation of a spying architecture that is integrated into their own corporate systems and operational activities.

Yet publicly, these same corporations present themselves as pioneers of free market enterprise. Whereas in fact they are corporatists working part-time for the government for mutual benefit. This is exactly what happened in Nazi Germany in the 1930s. It's often overlooked that some of Germany's largest corporations and industrialists worked with the Nazi Party and even funded it.

What a fucking obcene waste of money boys.  I must be the most uninteresting person I know.  Monday, go to work, come in from work, have a beer, look on the web, go to ZH, swear like fuck for a while, go to bed, rinse and repeat.

The terrorists surely know how to encrypt their communications and interact online in a stealthy manner designed to avoid the NSA and other government spies. It's folks like me, who have blissfully assumed they have a modicum of privacy, since they have never done anything in their lives that indicate they want to harm anyone, who will be swept up in this data collection activity. Based on past performance by our government, it will be the American born and bred who criticize this government's overreach, trampling of liberties, destruction of the Constitution, and destruction of our economy by the Fed who number in the 117,675 "active surveillance targets."

It's the folks who haven't felt a need to learn how to use Tor and are clueless when it comes to encrypting anything who will be swept up in this. Surely the NSA is aware of that fact. As usual, it is your law abiding citizen who gets the short end of the stick.

When an innocent man stands trial, he already knows whether or not he is guilty.  He doesn't discover whether or not he is guilty.  He discovers whether or not the court is competent (or corrupt).

When NSA or anyone else spies on an innocent person, that person discovers whether or not the spies are competent or corrupt.

You don't know what it means for NSA to spy on me.  But I know it means that, at the very least, they are incompetent and wasting taxpayer money.

Interesting to hear from one of the other NSA whistle blowers, Russ Tice, on who it is that the NSA targets:

“They went after–and I know this because I had my hands literally on the paperwork for these sort of things–they went after high-ranking military officers; they went after members of Congress, both Senate and the House, especially on the intelligence committees and on the armed services committees and some of the–and judicial,”

and also

"...the NSA had ordered wiretaps on phones connected to then-Senate candidate Barack Obama back in 2004."

So how does that tie in with only spying on us foreigners? Are these guys all terrorists too? (Well Odrone'a is obviously but how could they have known that he would turn out so evil back in 2004?).

It does look like a massive blackmail operation/power grab by a bunch of unelected generals but I guess there could be an innocent explanation.

You're right.

And this pervasive spying is only partly connected to identifying terrorists. That is simply the public explanation for it to keep the sheeple happy and to provide MSM with a suitable excuse for not wailing about it. Much of it is directly related to creating control files (aka 'dirt') on people who are - or want to be - important figures in public life and many other ordinary people. Possessing dirt on people means they can be controlled and managed by the State. Just like it was under the East German Stasi regime.

An example of this was the targeting of Tea Party members by the IRS.

From recent revelations, another large part of it is plain old industrial and diplomatic/political espionage. The latter might be excused because many countries get involved in that, although the techniques used by the US-NSA & UK-GCHQ are possibly more advanced.

Obama could be considered a foreign person because he was born a subject of the U.K. from his Kenyan father.

NSA could use this fact to justify his surveillance, but what about the constitutional requirement that a president be a "natural born" citizen?

P.S.

Dear NSA,  Go ahead and add me (a U.S. citizen with no foreign affilations) to your "target list".  I don't care if you kill me with a drone strike but please no polonium poisoning!

Things that make you go Ewwwww.....

Considering that:

*  General medicine teaches that the average human farts 12-18 times per day

*  There are over 100 million iPhones in circulation around the world

*  iPhone users will frequently carry the device in their rear pants pocket

*  PRISM is, potentially, listening to all iPhones, all of the time

I wonder if NSA has developed "flatulence detection algorithms" that automatically scrub the sound from their recordings out of general decorum and consideration of their employees?

If YES, then there may be ways for terrorists to hide their communications in these sounds.

Sick bastards.

Occasionally I carry a "dumb phone".  One of those 15 buck jobs that you can receive calls on or call out on.  It takes pictures and recordings too, like big deal.  I turn it of and leave it on the table in my room 15 days out 30.   I remember the day when you had to be physically in a room where your phone was locate in order to make or receive a call.  I like that paradigm.  My phone stays in my room more and more.  The only reason I carry it is because my wife is a phone addict:  yeah, the type that HAS to answer.  Me?  I'll let it ring.  If you don't leave a message, then I have no reason to talk to you.

Are you a slave to your phone.  If you are -- you're an idiot.  Idiot!

If the NSA is so dedicated to terrorists, they ought to get evidence against the Banksters who've done more damage to this country than any Mideastern terrorist. I bet more people are afraid of the power banks hold over this country than some rogue terrorist who, by the way, has the potential to create as much damage as our domestic mass murderers.

Apart from that, I'm both gratified and in awe of Edward Snowden. Yes, I think he has done us a great favor, really sacrificing his life (though I hope it doesn't come to that) to square his conscience. Many people who'd like to blow the whistle don't have a trusted press helper to ensure the whistle is heard. My hat's off to Greenwald as well for the important role he's played here.

In the mid 70s I was working for a company developing software sold to colleges and universities. This was the era of punch cards, 7 track tapes, green bar paper and 40MB disk drives the size of minivans. Much of the work then was conversion of manual processes to computer. The products consisted of Students, Faculty, Courses, Registration, Facilities etc. We had numerous customers in the US and some internationally.

The faculty and students at a New York institution had concerns about this and even had a small demonstration - citing the unpleasantness of just a few decades earlier and the still lingering stench of burning human flesh, enhanced by the simple tabulating machines of the day.

Their concerns were taken seriously.

1) Follow the Constitution, Bill of Rights, that's what it's there for.

2) It's not criminal to be a Patriot, you say it is though. MIAC Report.

3) Stop every illegal war and send our troops home.

4) Stop defiling everything We the People hold dear to our hearts about America.

See? No more spying needed. Unless... your the real criminals that need to find out when Americans collectivly take a stand and say ENOUGH!

So the only rational conclusion is that they want you to know they are spying on you.

THERE IS NOTHING TO DISTRACT US FROM. This is IT. Nothing else is more important. Nothing else matters if this is not scrutinised, addressed, fixed, remedied and reversed, and all over every MSM site, every blog, every forum, every Reddit page, every comment thread, everywhere, in all languages.

The only thing that matters is that this is stopped, because if it isn't nothing else will matter, ever. The US.Gov will become a turnkey, 1984, totalitarian state, and they will rule, control and rendite everyone and anyone on this planet.

There are no more important matters. This is the only issue.

Will?  Is?

How stupid can you be?  Doncha get it?

The Snowden disclosures are intentional!!!

Americans don't care, and nothing will change except people will self-censor any expressions of "dissidence."

This is EXACTLY the desired result!
