French Opposition Demands Referendum, Warns "What Are They Going To Do? Send In Tanks?"

Tyler Durden's picture

For the first time, France's Front National party (described by some as 1930s Social Nationalism) is running level with the two governing parties in post-war France - the Socialists and the Gaullistes. With all around 21%, the Front is rapidly gaining support as its leader, Marine Le-Pen exclaims, "Europe is just a great bluff. One side there is the immense power of sovereign peoples, and on the other side are a few technocrats." As The Telegraph reports, following a massive victory securing 46% of the vote in a recent by-election, her anti-euro sentiment is clearly gathering attention. "The euro ceases to exist the moment that France leaves, and that is our incredible strength. What are they going to do, send in tanks?" she notes, adding that should she be elected she will demand an EU referendum, "I will negotiate over the points on which there can be no compromise. If the result is inadequate, I will call for withdrawal." While her rhetoric is strong, it is clear by the gains and her purging of the more extreme members of her cantankerous father's party that she is serious as she concludes somewhat ominously, "France is not a country that can accept tutelage from Brussels."

Via The Telegraph,

[Front National Party leader Marine Le-Pen is] brimming with confidence after her party secured 46pc of the vote in a by-election earthquake a week ago.

For the first time, the Front National is running level with the two governing parties of post-War France, Socialists and Gaullistes. All are near 21pc in national polls, though the Front alone has the wind in its sails.

...

"The euro ceases to exist the moment that France leaves, and that is our incredible strength. What are they going to do, send in tanks?"

...

"Europe is just a great bluff. One side there is the immense power of sovereign peoples, and on the other side are a few technocrats,"

...

Asked if she intends to pull France of the euro immediately, she said: "Yes, because the euro blocks all economic decisions. France is not a country that can accept tutelage from Brussels," she said.

...

She said the EMU crisis is structural. North and South need different exchange rates. "The D-Mark would be rising if it were not for the euro, and that means Germany has a chronically undervalued currency. The euro is far too strong for France, and it is eating away our competitiveness,"

...

A recent Pew Foundation survey said French support for the EU Project has collapsed from 60pc to 40pc over the last year, and 77pc think economic integration has been damaging.

...

France endured the same slow torture in the early 1930s under the Gold Standard, stoically accepting the "500 deflation decrees" of premier Pierre Laval. The dam broke in 1936 with the election of spurned outsiders, then the Leftist Front Populaire, with Communist support. The Gold Standard collapsed.

...

"We have succumbed to a spirit of slavery in France. We have forgotten how to lead, and our voice is not heard any more," she said. It will be heard now.

I'm sure the white supremacists and anti-semites who seem to frequent zh comments these days would love the front, but for everyone else this statement:

France's Front National party (described by some as 1930s Social Nationalism)

...is putting it rather mildly. Her and her father's party are basically the new dawn (Greek party) of France.

Personally, I don't think supporting a fascist nationalist party is the best way to protect individual liberty.

History is also on my side with this one.

Of course, if your main priority is not individual liberty (as is clearly the case with many of the closet fascists on here) and is instead to get rid of / kick out dem evil godless <insert other race here>, then supporting nationalists has been historically advantageous.

Hahaha James Cole, are you looking for a job at Bloomberg ? "White Supremacists" ? Did you know that Front National, back in the Fifities, was the FIRST PARTY to propose for Parliament an Algerian born French ?? Front National does not have a militia, etc. Jean-Marie Le Pen, the historical leader, became orphan when he lost his father during the war, killed by the Germans. The fact that he is a revisionist has nothing to do with the love or hate of Germans. Let's say he is for the truth. Jean-Marie Le Pen is warning since the 70s that uncontrolled immigration would cause havoc to France. He was right 200 %. See what happened when Hollande won the elections. You could see flags from the whole African continent, but the French one. They are against extreme multiculturality because it will dissolve ALL the cultures. They want to preserve the French identity, the same way they want Senegalese people to preserve their identity. Don't you get that in the name of diversity, they promote actually uniformity ?

It's a patriotic party, some kind of soft Putin posture. Oligarchy hates nation, because it's the only entity able to stop globalization and its havoc.

Welllll at 1939 the French tanks were actually better than the German ones except in one particular.  The German tanks had radios.

If I recall correctly on the Eastern Front the Italians had some Renault tanks that they had purchased pre-war. They were under gunned in comparison to the Russian tanks but their frontal armor could take a hit from a Russian 85mm tank gun and keep on moving.

In France, as elsewhere it takes unions and socialists to mess up an industry.

The French can build stuff it is just that theories, politics, and doctrine can get in the way.  Their is an old jape from the Napolaeonic naval warfare days by the Brits,  "French war ships are like French women, fast, beautiful, and poorly manned."

if memory serves, italians on the east front in 1941 had m13/40 and semovente. romanians had some renaults. while renaults could bounce a 45mm shot, an 85mm AP round would have smoked a renault. in 1941, the only 85mm the russians were using were 85mm AA. maybe the renault could have survived an 85mm HE hit.

later war, the russians fielded 85mm guns on su-85, kv-85, and t-34/85.

french tanks in 1940 did actually have some decent - if not superior - overall specs when compared to german. the failure of the french was mostly in tactics, and in their high command. also, french morale was low when compared to german. the radio (or lack of) thing was a big deal, agreed.

all of this talk about french being cowards is bs in any event. it could be that they were some of the only ones to have had the sense to have remained horrified at what happened in ww1. of course, maybe the treaty of versailles was a great motivator to the germans.

edit: looking around a bit on the web, it looks like the italians did have some renaults, but they weren't on the east front. romanians definitely had them on the east fron though.

The French did not have any allies backing them when Germany invaded. It was smart to surrender and wait for the tide to change. Some of the toughest French guys are fighting as mercinaries. Interesting dynamic between France and Germany throughout the ages. The French occupied much of Germany during the Napoleon wars and left their marks visibly and audibly everywhere.

Contrary to what has often been said, and is a result of the Nazi propaganda of that time, the German advance (Blitzkrieg) encountered serious resistance from the French troops.
In just a month and a half of fighting the French army counted 84,000 dead in its ranks - this is 4 times more than the losses of the American army in three months of battles in Normandy (21000).
It is the air superiority (over 1,000 Stuka bombers knocked out the troops defending Sedan) and the intelligent use of the German panzers that broke the defenses.
The sacrifice of the soldiers of the French Army of the North subsequently allowed the English to save their army at Dunkirk.
Struggling one against five, the French fighter planes weakened the Luftvaffe (defeating two German planes for one loss) and this also helped the RAF to save England from invasion.
Since WW2, air superiority is the winning key of all battles …

Like most things of true importance about WW2, talk of French cowardice suffers greatly from oversmplification, and a good dose of rewritten history.

Prior to the war, France suffered from extreme political fracturing, leaving a disillusioned and confused populace ripe for the fall. Increased combat voracity would not have overcome military politicization, officer corp cronyism, unimaginative tactics, klepto capitialism, marxist subversion, fascist sympathizers, and moral decay. No one will fight for a system not worth fighting for.

The same scenes are currently playing out all over the west today.

"French war ships are like French women, fast, beautiful, and poorly manned."
Good joke, but happily fot the US, this was not the case at the battle of the Chesapeake, also known as the battle of the Virginia Capes, where the Comte de Grasse defeated the British fleet and prevented the Royal Navy from reinforcing or evacuating the blockaded forces of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown.
The result was the reinforcement of the American army with siege artillery and French troops - all of which proved decisive in the Siege of Yorktown, effectively securing American independence.
At this decisive battle, more than half of the fighting troops were French - led by the Comte de Rochambeau.

Actually, he is ALLOT LIKE FDR. On the French tank debate, the reason they were ineffective, was in the manner in which they were deployed. Like the other nation's tanks, they were used as infrantry support, and assigned to infrantry divisions in allotments. The Germans were the only ones who used them as a seperate fighting force, able to break through enemy defenses, so the infrantry could follow up and exploit. The allies were slow to adopt this doctrine, and it was not until did they manage to hold there own. Best tank of the war was the T-34. It too had no radio though.

I imagine that the only reason that France grinds to a halt is if the few, very large accounts or shell companies belonging to the oldest of the old money are hampered in some way.

The serious old money left a long time ago, when De Gaulle came to power. It went to Switzerland, Monaco, London and never returned. It has been causing them problems ever since, once you start nationalizing private assets raising private investment is hard.

This Le Penn woman WILL scare the eurocrats and bankers. If there is a politician who could utter the `default` word without damaging her grass roots support it is her.

France is short of fossil fuels like the rest if europe, but in many ways it is less dependent on the outside world than most countries. To start with they can feed themselves which makes much else possible. They build a proper suite of military hardware as well. They make shit cars obviously, but French people are fine with that.

Anyway she is stridently anti immigration, which will scare away voters who fear racial tension. French cities are full of North Africans, a lot of whom were born on France. With record unemployment the country is a tinderbox.

The WMFDs (Weapons of Mass Financial Destruction) will be unleashed on France. You can bet the IMF et al will among other things undermine if not outright destroy their whole CFA Franc zone and currency peg they use in the Africa. They have a fixed exchange rate so they get natural resources for pennies on the dollar due to exchange rate between CFA Francs and currently Euros used in France. This will also fuck the EU big time since they lose their fixed noninflation adjusted peg when the French return to using the Franc.

Here is a good background piece on the Franc zone and the whole currency peg set up. If France leaves and switches the peg back to Francs all hell is going to break loose in the whole eurozone economy alone just from the equivalent of overnight hyperinflation in prices of resources once they loose that peg. This more than anything else is what makes France vital to the EU.

And if you think this isn't a big deal do the math.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CFA_franc

The CFA franc (in French: franc CFA [f??? se?f?], or colloquially franc) is the name of two currencies used in Africa which are guaranteed by the French treasury. The two CFA franc currencies are the West African CFA franc and the Central African CFA franc. Although theoretically separate, the two CFA franc currencies are effectively interchangeable.

Both CFA Francs currently have a fixed exchange rate to the euro: 100 CFA francs = 1 former French (nouveau) franc = 0.152449 euro; or 1 euro = 655.957 CFA francs exactly.

CFA Francs are used in fourteen countries:

West African CFA franc countries

Benin
Burkina Faso
Ivory Coast
Guinea-Bissau
Mali
Niger
Senegal
Togo

Central African CFA franc countries

Cameroon
Central African Republic
Chad
Republic of the Congo
Equatorial Guinea
Gabon

People can do their own research as to wealth of natural resources and what type each country in that they export. But I think it is apparent the competitive purchasing advantage the whole EU has over everyone else due to that peg that France brought to the table originally when it used to be pegged to francs prior to joining the EU. Money has replaced guns as the preferred weapon of choice in the age of finalization.

Remember this term financial colonization. He who controls the money controls the sovereignty of the state. If you don't control your own money you are nothing more than a colony to someone else.

Okay, allright, everyone loves bagging the French and Italians. There was a French PM,a Pierre Mendes-France if I remember correctly. He said he would go to Geneva to get a peace treaty for Indochina,or he would come back to Paris and resign within 30 days. But,and here'e the kicker, the last thing he would do in office was to introduce a Bill for conscription for the French Army.He was going to force the French legislature to front up or shut up.When was the last time the US had a leaders with such balls? This all happened around 1954,when the disaster at Dien Ben Phu occurred.American taxpayers were already carrying the financial costs of the war,and would for some years ahead. How is this relevant you ask? Due to the costs of the war,the NASA space program and LBJ's welfare state, the FED started massive printing. The French smelt a rat,and exercised the gold window of the Bretton-Woods currency accords. They withdrew enough to alarm Nixon into dropping the US off the gold peg and everything has been floating ever since.Effectively the USA defaulted on its currency obligations by suspending convertability into precious metals.Things have gone downhill since....
