The Coup Is Complete: Egypt Military Tells Mursi He Is No Longer President - Tahrir Celebrates - Live Feed

Tyler Durden's picture

Well that was quick

Some headlines from the speech:

  • SEESI: MILITARY TRIED TO BROKER RECONCILIATION FOR MONTHS
  • SEESI SAYS PRESIDENCY REJECTED OVERTURES
  • SEESI: MURSI SPEECH YESTERDAY DIDN'T MEET PEOPLE'S DEMANDS
  • SEESI SAYS EARLY PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS TO BE HELD
  • EGYPT'S CONSTITUTION TO BE SUSPENDED UNDER PLAN, SEESI SAYS
  • SEESI: MILITARY AGREED ON ROADMAP THAT WON'T EXCLUDE ANYBODY
  • SEESI SAYS GOVERNMENT OF TECHNOCRATS TO BE FORMED

Mursi is unhappy:

  • MURSI URGES CITIZENS TO REJECT COUP: SKYNEWS CITING STATEMENT
  • EGYPT'S MURSI SAYS MILITARY MEASURES REPRESENT 'FULL COUP'

Which however is irrelevant, as Mursi is about to disappear, only to reappear perhaps in the transit zone of the Moscow airport

From the WSJ:

Egypt’s military announced it is ousting Islamist president President Mohammed Morsi, suspending the constitution and calling for early elections—a move the presidential palace quickly branded a “complete military coup.” Egypt will be ruled temporarily by the president of the Supreme Constitutional Court, the head of Egypt’s military, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, said in an address on state television Wednesday evening in Egypt. Mr. Morsi rejected the declaration that he was out of office and called on Egyptians to avoid bloodshed and honor the constitution.

Of course, how the Muslim Brotherhood will accept their overthrow remains unclear but after the initial shock expect "reprisals"...

The new interim head of Egypt will be revealed tomorrow:

  • Head of Egypt constitutional court to be sworn in as interim head of state on Thursday

He will most likely be succeeded by Mohamed ElBaradei.

While earlier the State Department spokesperson was careful not to take sides, it seems - given Cantor's recent comments of the US long-standing support of the Egyptian military - that they have come out in support of the new framework; for fear, we suspect, of the growing anti-American sentiment we first exposed here.

*U.S. ORDERS HOME NON-ESSENTIAL DIPLOMATS IN EGYPT: AP

Reuters is reporting that four are dead in clashes between Morsi supporters and security forces in Alexandria - as we noted here, it seems the military's standby role has shifted gears.

About 2 centuries ago one of my buds was having a proctoscopic exam.  That was in the olden days when there was a long stainless periscope tube inserted down your butt hole while you were in this thingamajig with your ass up in the air, head down.
So in the midst of it, my smartass bud askes the doctor how being a proctologist had impacted his self esteem.

He didn't walk quite right for a few days.
Dumn shit.

Another "seemed like a good idea at the time" story.

Ted Cruz sums it up. I like this guy better than Grandstand Rand.

http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2013/07/03/our_friend_in_cairo_ted...

"In what has to be one of the most stunning diplomatic failures in recent memory, the United States is -- in both perception and reality -- entrenched as the partner of a repressive, Islamist regime and the enemy of the secular, pro-democracy opposition."

It is not a failure when your Commander is a closet Sharia Law following Muslim. He is at a minimum a sympathizer if not an outright supporter of terrorism since the Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi masterminded and coordinated the Benghazi and Egyptian Embassy attacks on 9/11/12. Not only that with all the spying we do in the name of keeping the populace "safe and secure from terrorism" the ole Oreo had to have known what was up since it is safe to assume the NSA was monitoring all Muslim Brotherhood communications. Between that and giving them aid and weaposn that counts as aiding and abeiting and providing material support to a terrorist organization. That is enough to be charged with treason.

Stevens was without a doubt silenced to cover up some illegal operation going on. At this point just prove the Muslim Brotherhood was the source of the attack is good enough at this point. The why on Stevens is next. Put the hard evidence out in the public eye that the Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi are a bunch of terrorists. This is were the Egyptians if they truely want to help out the American people against the Amerikan Marxists, put the hard evidence out that Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood were behind the Benghazi and Egyptian consulate attacks. Remember what disregard the Oreo also has for international law concerning Bolivia's Morales and Snowden. Don't think he won't act like a 2 bit thug against Egypt and their people afterwards since Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood were supposed to be a key piece to the Caliphate under the United States of Sharia Law he wants established in the Middle East.

It will be officially over when the US State dept. says it is.

Don't forget they subsidise the army and w/o grain imports and w/o oil exports the country is BANKRUPT.

SO army or moslem brotherhood, they are hooked on foreign handouts to survive.

Sad reality of most of MENA. You cannot move w/o our approval...

'Cos you have no money; no morse code required to get that message to those in power.

The more things change the more they stay the same UNLESS the local power structure finds its economic independence; AWESOME mirage for Egypt like for Pak/afghan; not Irak...when political structures shed the shackles of obscurantism AND of foreign imperial control... we will see a new awakening in MENA; and it won't be Islamist, it'll be secular and modernist; like Kemal, Mossadegh and Nasser.

Lets wait for the dust to settle; let time take its time, as petrodollar hegemony demise is a question of "when" not "if". Time's arrow and paradigm change; new renaissance age.

I can guarantee you that if that millions of people filled the streets in Washington DC for someone’s ouster, the political establishment would do exactly as Mursi did, including the statement:

” We swear to God that we will sacrifice even our blood for the United States and its people, to defend them against any terrorist, radical or fool.”

I wonder if Mursi feels betrayed by Obama. A ringing endorsement from him would have stopped the coup in its tracks.

And what exactly was Mursis crime anyway? He was elected by a majority of Egyptians on an islamic platform. He carried it out in a minimal sort of way (at least from what can be seen from the outside) against an entrenched army/bureaucracy that was probably out to sabotage his every move. I actually feel quite sorry for the guy - and for Egyptians. The army had their chance ruling that place for 30 years and fucked it up. Where will they take them now?

The International Monetary Fund and Egypt hope to conclude talks for a loan deal "in the coming weeks", they said in a joint statement Sunday...

The Egyptian officials "are firmly committed to addressing Egypt's economic and financial challenges with the objective of restoring sustained and socially-balanced growth, and they are already taking encouraging actions in this direction," the brief statement read.

"Work will continue with the objective of reaching agreement on an IMF Stand-By Arrangement to support the authorities' national economic program in the coming weeks."

The IMF and Egypt have been in talks for months over a multibillion-dollar IMF loan that is contingent on strong support from domestic political actors and a commitment to key reforms.

Last year the IMF reached a deal in principle to provide a $4.8 billion loan to help finance the government while it undertakes reforms. [Source 22nd April 2013]

But Nero fiddled, and so:

Egypt's government is in the late stages of verifying its economic reform programme with the International Monetary Fund before obtaining a $4.8 billion (3 billion pounds) IMF loan, its central bank governor said on Saturday.

The loan, needed to help stabilise Egypt's balance of payments and state finances, has been under discussion for two years but agreement has repeatedly been postponed by political unrest in the country and the government's reluctance to commit to austerity measures. [Reuters 15th June]

The main pivot of these talks was Hisham Ramez, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt , who gave a word to the undergraduate class of Spring 2013 at their graduation commencement. (That's the American University in Cairo, if you missed it). He has some friends in the BoA, never forget that.

Pray that I do not alter it any further...

You could almost buy into the myth that the IMF brings shiny things, wealth and progress, apart from that little sting to the tail:

"...government's reluctance to commit to austerity measures."  Austerity measures in a country like Egypt are a bit of a misnomer; it's traditional to have a functioning middle class and glutton economy before you start pruning. (And, for fucks sake - whoever went for "austerity" instead of "efficiency" or "anti-corruption" is a massive tool. Any public in the world would sign their first born away for an efficient and non-corrupt government. But I'm guessing you can't get away with that level of lies, due to the compact).

Walt always was a Fascist motherfucker, and the War allowed some tastes to flourish. M I C K E Y  M O U S E. Or, MIC- KEY- MOUSE, if you want to use the Kubrick tells.

There are ways of living in harmony, though:

A change in the law to bring in an opt-out organ donation system has been overwhelmingly voted through by Welsh assembly members. Wales will become the first UK country to adopt a process where individuals will be presumed to have consented for their organs to be donated unless they opt out. Ministers want to increase the number of donors for transplant. The new presumed consent system could come into force by 2015.

Some 43 of the 60 assembly members backed the bill, eight voted against and there were two abstentions. [BBC 2nd July]

Do a GREP on my thoughts on this, it's not like this wasn't written into the script. Co-Operation, not annihilation, remember? (And, remember: whenever you think the satire is too dark, there's some setups worth the wait. Marshmellows, bitches. And yes, that's for the carnivores reading, both sides have to benefit in a deal, and it's a given your senses of humor are wildly different).

Fireworks? Seriously? Did someone actually budget for that ahead of time? Does the UN have a revolution planning department?

- Hey, Joe, we're gonna have a revolution in a few days. Put in an order for some roman candles, sparklers and petards. Make sure you label them properly. Don't want them to end up with live ammunition. Ship'em as soon as soon as the rubber bullets, water cannons, and tear gas clear Egyptian customs. And while in storage, keep'em at least a foot away from chemical weapons we're shipping to Syria. I don't want any stains!

Europe and the ME have a totally different relationship to fireworks than the USA. The flares and fireworks you see being launched have nothing to do with your cutesy cutesy 4th of July stuff; should have paid attention to Turkish protests to grokk this.

It's a football thing / fairly standard youth rebellion issue - and no, unlike you well behaved Americans, they don't sit down at music festivals, either.

If you can name me a major sport event in the USA that's not got snipers in the tower, and where you can get away with lighting flares, please tell me about it.

Although, by the junks, there's a lot of nostalgia flowing tonight. Must be the pre-match nerves for the 4th of July celebrations.

Well, that just depressed me. Lacrosse is proper violent if you do it right (ask the Irish - their national sport is what it's based on, and that's worse than Aussie Rules Football). America turned a perfectly violent sport (for both females and males) into some kind of pagent.

At this point, I think the rest of the world can agree, American(ized) Sports are for pussies. The irony is: you add armor, you add stupid fucking rules, you add boring time outs and boring replays, and it ends up being more dangerous to the participants 'cause the players think they're much safer.

Hint: That's your Military that is.

honestly, i posted that clip as a joke.  indoor lacrosse is silly, i agree.

i've played outdoor lacrosse for over 20 years, and it has always been proper violent.  never considered myself a pussy.  then again, i also was in the army.  i must be dumb rather than a pussy for putting myself into situations of losing my life or limb.  i don't know.  now i get to sit most of the time behind a screen typing away.  evolution, as you say?

What's funny is that Morsi is being thrown out for attempting to convene an elected Congress that the Supreme Court ruled couldn't reconvene.

Basically a small group of people concluded that there would be no legislative process in Egypt and the military sided with that small group of people blocking their parliament from convening.

The military then begins attacking "militants" along the border to which Morsi attempts to fire members of the intelligence and armed forces.

So when Morsi tries to reform the government and release political prisoners, the military overthrows him.

It's a coup. No doubt. The military is the counter-revolutionary movement in Egypt. Only Mubarak was removed before. Everyone else remained. And they're not going to leave.

Take note. That's why voting for a new president doesn't matter. The ruling class doesn't just give up power because you hold a vote.

The revolt in Egypt is an organically driven people-power movement to oust a dictator, restore universal freedoms, and wrestle the country free from the clutches of the US military-industrial complex, but the man now being positioned to form a new government is a pied piper working for the very same globalists and NGO’s that autocrat leader Hosni Mubarak has dutifully served for nearly 30 years...

Excellent question. Look at the numbers of people protesting this time as opposed to 2 years ago. Far more this time.

Not a word of praise from the Obama Administration about freedom and democracy.  Instead the CIA and Obama install a Muslim puppet government which dictated Muslim law. The US is becoming the former Soviet Union. The CIA  is the new KGB.

Anyone who thinks this is going to end well should see what happened in Algeria in 1991 when the army launched a similar coup against the democratically elected Islamist government.   That quickly descended into a brutal civil war that cost more than 200,000 lives.   Entire villages and neighborhoods were massacred by the Islamic insurgents.  From Wiki:

The areas south and east of Algiers, which had voted strongly for FIS in 1991, were hit particularly hard; the Rais and Bentalha massacres in particular shocked worldwide observers. Pregnant women were sliced open, children were hacked to pieces or dashed against walls, men's limbs were hacked off one by one, and, as the attackers retreated, they would kidnap young women to keep as sex slaves. Although this quotation by Nesroullah Yous, a survivor of Bentalha, may be an exaggeration, it expresses the apparent mood of the attackers:

"We have the whole night to rape your women and children, drink your blood. Even if you escape today, we'll come back tomorrow to finish you off! We're here to send you to your God!"[17]

Good luck everybody!!

if there ever has been a "sea change" in global power..i think it is occurring now..the US has a lot of debt funded products that could have been in demand, but the europeans, chinese and russians are unlikely to trust any negotiations with the US from here on in ..and fiat dollars are not going to be worth what they once were..when its "In (your) God we DONT trust" that will be read on the face of dollar bank notes..serious flaws in policy..insider trading, price fixing and racketeering is permissable by the State Department because they "are the law" (Judge Dredd)...

sad..screwed up foreign policy formulation at State makes millions upon millions of people poorer and less secure..to what end?
