The military wasn't happy with him anyway, but my understanding is that when Morsi {or it might have just been one of his aides in the MB - not sure} called for Assad to be overthrown, couching it in jihad-against-apostates terms, that was the last straw.
There may or may not be a distinction between the FSA and Al Nusra, but it has become clear, not that the media is giving it much attention, that many of the 'rebels' are outright targeting Christians for murder. Apparently, that has no impact on the zeal for our own government to destabilize that country, with money and arms and logistics provided to the very people engaged in jihad against religious and ethnic minorities.
If you've figured out why our government is supporting the rebels when the punchline is going to be years of war, ethnic cleansing and Balkanization - good for you. I've read several pieces on here declaring that its all about Qatari pipelines, which is odd, given the fact Saudi Arabia isn't on board, and a failed state isnt the best place to run pipelines through. Weakening Hezbollah and Iran ahead of the planned attack on the latter seems more likely to me.

Egypt was historically the bread basket of Rome, the largest exporter of grain in antiquity, producing such a great excess that it allowed Rome to keep its underclasses fed and pacified with free bread. I understand that the population of Egypt is much greater than at those times, but with modern farming methods you would think that they could still feed themselves. I wonder if this has something to do with the Aswan dam stopping the yearly inundation that deposited rich new alluvial soil every year and gave them their abundance or if they have been robbed of the means of production in some other way. Interesting.
