yeah, so the military takes over and all hell breaks out.   Ironic.

This has been weird also because Morsi was supposedly "democratically elected" yet then gets "undemocratically unelected."   Why not wait until the next election?  Coup or no coup, maybe violence was unavoidable.

Military coups are not democracy. Mursi was the elected leader, and it doesn't matter how many people were on the streets. The coup was an utter and absolute failure of democracy in Egypt. Now they must try again, if it doesn't descent into a civil war. As much as I dislike the MB and their supporters, they have a right to be really fucking angry.

It is you who must cut the bullshit. This is an extremely dangerous act by the military, it sets a precedent for military control over the democratic process(by which point it ceases to be democratic) by using the people as an excuse.

Not only that, as a result of their actions the country is on the verge of serious civil strife and possibly even civil war.

Damn, you statists are fuckin' thick. Voting sanctions nothing, as it is based upon an immoral ideology that claims I have the right to choose your ruler, whether you want one or not.

Besides, there is NO difference between the two sides as it pertains to "the people." It is nothing but gang warfare, and it matters NOT which gang wins, as that merely sets the stage for the next fight.

If you really care about the world, then please take a minute to understand how an ethical society would function.

I would not blame atheism or faith. I would blame tribal politics and human ambition.

Not a bet I'll take; if I were placing bets, I'd imagine that this has had at least preliminary planning for at least ~2 years, so I'm fairly sure they've got the bases covered.

I've said it before: you can basically unite any of the semi to quasi modern ideologies together with a dislike for Sharia based government (no-one's tried Christianity yet, so I won't label it "Theocratic" in entirety: let me know how that one works out, America).

You'll note that a lot within the USA's "circle of trust" in the ME run under said Laws, by the way (with some notable exceptions). Of course, there's no real opposition left in those countries, due to their spending on paramilitary goodies & spy tech, and those wine-soaked walls of expensive prisons. Not to speak ill of the dead, but it wasn't purely an American driven strategic focus.

With all this discussion of "democracy" in the middle east, it merely reminds me of one thing.

It seems that almost as quickly as we started describing our government in the US as a "democracy," we started losing our "Republic" as things apparently devolved back into just being the "empire" again.

I tend to agree.

Plus, with the advent of the 16th and 17th amendments to the US Constitution, as well as the national popularity contest for President; things have really changed since the origin of the US.

All of the politicos used to be owing favors to the, local, Congressional representatives of the People.  They decided all of the Senators and, with the Senators, the President, originally.  Instead of this, they have inverted the entire power structure so that, now, all of the politicos are beholden to politico demi-gods in DC, instead of being beholden to local representation of We the People.  What a difference that makes!

lesser of two evils seems like a quaint way to describe a popularity contest

trying to figure how Obama will spin the overthrow of a democratically elected government (if a couple hundred anti-obama protestors showed up on Penn Ave, what would he do?) and since Syria's Assad is in favor of the overthrow of Morsi, (is the Muslim brotherhood among the rebels?) as well as al-qaeda. somewhere along the line you have to find a soundbite or a bit of slogganering on which to hang your bankrupt policies. a bit of global pragmatism, ie whatever serves our needs is what works for us, or just call it neoconservative hegemony. at least admit you have no priniciples. more of the bush antichrist, this time the ME gets the global vision of a chicago rackateer. beer for everybody, (not just turkish college students)

Hopefully I'm wrong, but these people seem to be wanting government to solve their poverty issues (which I heard are quite dire) but 40% of Egypt's GDP go to funding the public sector. How much more government can you have really ?

I hope the protestors see this number as a problem...

Are you kidding?  Of course they probably won't.  We here in the US don't even seem capable of figuring out such questions of economics, like this, or whether or not adding a whole new layer of bureaucracy to heath care is actually a real cost of doing business in the US (and will thus reduce employment from what it would have been, if increased as a new cost).

Democracy sounds great!  What in these people's history or background suggests that they are in anyway prepared for the ideas of self-government?  Free speech?  Property rights?  Equal protection?

We have the cart entirely before the horse when we think that just holding a "free" election insures stability.

Heck, the US has been practicing self-rule for 230+ years and our republic is more corrupt now that ever it seems.

They can do what they want, but until some basic ideas about how to self-govern are realized, this is what you will get.

Democracy for Egyptian is like a faily new Toyota Corolla for someone that drive an old Lada. Yeah, it's OK I guess compared to what you're used to, but that's ALL it is...yeah, enjoy.

Self rule? That is a pipe dream as long as the word government exists.

Maybe if tghe Syrians or Egyptians blew up the middle east oil fields the market would pay attention, otherwise it's a non-event.

Everyone is drunk on the equity market now. Everything else doesn't matter.

Last hour in Chicago,  3 dead,,, 2 unrelated shootings and one perp in a shootout with the Cops.  Average cost of a shooting or GSW as they call them in the ER is 58K to the Illinois taxpayer.  With that and the 80 plus billion in unfunded liabilities to public employee pension funds we should just have the cops declare a 3 day public shoot out with the gangbangers.  No prisoners,  no wounded in action.  A downed man is a dead man.  Bring in the TSA,  Army Nat Guard,  and ATF and have it out and citizens be damned because we are all paying for this cluster fuck called a society anyway.  That the citizens of Chicago cannot concealed carry is bullshit about to be changed and I live in western burbs and if i lived in gangbanger land my wife and I would both carry.  As it is when society becomes so fucked up you need to carry in your car or to go about your daily business the crazies have already won control.  We are there.  There is no rule of law from the highest court in the land down to your local city hall.  No one will accept that as there is a big hard swallow coming in admitting that what you believed in all your life was nothing but smoke and mirrors.  I don't see as we can carry on another twenty years and pretend we can keep lying to ourselves.  However,  I have been wrong before,  once.  So who knows?  Big bang or fizzle into the annals of history but we are fizzling...... great weekend all.  I must be off.

What is the purpose of the green lasers and who is using them?  Are they laser sights for weapons, to blind people, or just to get attention and look cool?

That would make sense if they were tracking the identity of the protesters.  Is there a link or further information about the specific technology used?

Ah, yes, thank you because I hadn't thought to try googling green laser iris scanner before posting.  Upon having trouble finding this information through typical means, I thought I would break down and ask for more details.
