Nicaragua Offers Edward Snowden Asylum, Venezuela Promptly Follows

Tyler Durden's picture

Update: First Nicaragua, now Venezuela.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Friday he had decided to offer asylum to former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, who has petitioned several countries to avoid capture by Washington.

"I have decided to offer humanitarian asylum to the young American, Edward Snowden, so that in the fatherland of (Simon) Bolivar and (Hugo) Chavez, he can come and live away from the imperial North American persecution,"

Maduro told a televised parade marking Venezuela's independence day. Snowden is believed to be holed up in the transit area of a Moscow international airport.

And so the "lead investor" principle comes to the asylum world. Now everyone wants a piece of the pie.

Just the headline for now from AFP...

We can't help but wonder how long before the US Marines invade again and take him home...

Via Reuters,

Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega said on Friday that he had received an asylum request from U.S. fugitive Edward Snowden and could accept the bid "if circumstances permit."

Via LaJornada,

President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, said today ready to grant asylum to the informant and U.S. secret services specialist Edward Snowden, and said he would "be happy, if circumstances allow."

Speaking at a rally against government supporters in Managua, Ortega confirmed that Snowden sought refuge in this country, through a letter delivered in recent days to the Nicaraguan embassy in Russia.

UPDATE: Via Russia Today,

"We are open, respectful of the right to asylum, and it is clear that if circumstances permit it, we would receive Snowden with pleasure and give him asylum here in Nicaragua," Ortega said at a public event.

Snowden needs to be VERY careful...

I can easily see a country which needs $$ (and which country does not want more these days) making a deal with the devil (Obama Admin) to accept him, and then later turn himover for big bucks.

And we all know...

Obama would pay BIG bucks to get him back in his clutches!

'Snowden' doesn't exist! The guy you saw interviewed by Greenwald was a well-rehearsed actor (whose birth name may, or may not, have been Snowden). IMO.

It's a PSYOP ... specifically to let everyone know - who didn't already know! - that they are being watched and had better be good/compliant sheep.

The CIA must piss their pants laughing at some of the comments in these Snowden threads....

I was initially suspicious just from watching 'Snowden's body language and presentation style in the Greenwald interview (as I first commented here). Then 'Bank Guy in Brussels' added background on the Brzezinski connections that immediately solidified my suspicions.

Since then, one whole month later, everything points to a psyop and nothing points to him being real.

The biggest 'tell' for me now is the complete absence of any photos of him or interviews/photos of his "girlfriend" - notwithstanding that every reporter on the planet is hunting for both of them. Oh, and his quoted background is as phony as Obomber's.

I think you have opened a strong point and every reason to be cautious.  He is getting close to Assange and that may be his undoing if Snowden is a double agent.  Afterall the govenments of all the worlds are owned, coerced or punished, by the USSA.  Snowden was not high enough in the system to be privy to mined data we cannot imagine.  This is just a test.  Do not adjust your sets.

It's a compelling scenario, but in that thread Urban Redneck makes a solid counter.

Apart from the fact that Urban Redneck addressed only one of BGIB's many points, even that was not, IMO, a "solid" counter to the multiple Brzezinski connections.

If he's part of a psyop all that has happened in the country, nay the world, is rage by what has been revealed. Nobodiy is shutting up about it, they're questioning the usefulness and "LEGALITY" of 24/7/365 Orwellian monitoring of our communications" for our protection".

Which would seem to me to be the exact opposite of their long term interests, that is, us not knowing we are being monitored so we would continue to speak freely about our future intentions & motivations.

Spying means...gathering the information and the person or entity not knowing they have been spied upon, otherwise they run the risk of acting on planted information.

Like me and you, toying around with recipes for pressure cookers ;-)

true nmewn, but consider this from an analysis of the novel Catch-22

Yossarian lost his courage after seeing Snowden's insides spill out all over the plane.

and consider this from ZBig's Between Two Ages : America's Role in the Technetronic Era

“Such a society would be dominated by an elite whose claim to political power would rest on allegedly superior scientific know-how. Unhindered by the restraints of traditional liberal values, this elite would not hesitate to achieve its political ends by the latest modern techniques for influencing public behavior and keeping society under close surveillance and control."

personally still on the fence on this one.   i would like to believe he's legit, but realize that my "likes" (and those of others like me, as well as everyone else) have been collected, catalogued, wordclouded, & analyzed and very possibly could be used to influence my behavior by creating a "person" who just so happens to have the same name of the character from a book whose title references the situation in which the entire world finds itself at this very moment in time -- a character who's just so happens to divulge a "secret" then gets his guts blown out which just so happens to trigger a loss of courage in the main character that prevents any escape from the situation in which he finds himself.

Catch 22 indeed.

Yes, valid points.

I've considered they did it to tamp down dissent, to let everyone know they are being watched and to make everyone shut up.

But I won't shut up and I would expect every freedom loving individual on the planet to not be cowed, they can only kill me or us once...and for what...calling them the sick & evil bastards they are?

We have found out they are doing it in the UK and France as well, its everywhere in supposedly free & open societies and we found out the depth & breadth of it because of Snowden.

I found this of interest...

“Intelligence community contractors have been shut out of all of the recent reforms,” says Angela Canterbury, director of policy at the Project On Government Oversight (POGO). “They received no coverage under the WPEA for federal employees, the PPD-19 for IC civil servants, and were carved out of the contractor whistleblower protections in the NDAA—based on objections from the Congressional intelligence committees—leaving them with no specific protections for whistleblowing under the law. If you look at intelligence contractors, they have no protections under any of the laws. It really is an accountability loophole.”

He can't expect a fair trial here under whistleblower status...and I'm posting this for Snowden's benefit (if he reads it) before some snarky ass lawyer gets inside his head trying to convince him he can.

I think he's legit.

A footnote in the report

I'm sayin it ain't working if thats what the plan was...a lot of people are saying WTF is this?!?!?

Now if this leads to more cash transactions, fantastic IMHO. More face to face communications (like with myself and a local bike shop owner the other day, instead of ordering over the net with Visa) even better.

The bike shop owner thinks just like the majority of us by the way ;-)

In a world where every body wants money, let's start a pool to fund the counter offer to the offer made by the GOV. We will need our own printing presses... but with so many of us, and modern color printer technology, I think we can keep up with the FED / Mint.  No seriously, we could start a fund to counteroffer to the Nicarguans to honor the asylum... what do you think we'd need, $100,000,000? I'll chip in $1000, and if 100,000 others do as well, we'd have it.

Isn't that how it's done in high stakes negotiations... counter offers? We the people need to kick our action up a few notches, if we ever expect to get any respect from the Banks / Gov's / Militaries. Fuck the Judges and the rest. We go for the jugular... $100,000,000 cash, for Snowden's safety... might as well include Assange and Manning on the deal and get them all bunk beds in the same dorm room.

How about like I said before, we just take the $100,000,000 and buy us an island, create a nation state, and issue citizenship... we put Assange / Manning / Snowden in charge... Greece has a couple of nice islands for sale, cheaper than the $100,000,000 lump sum. We can get them a boat too.

The US government is known o have employed Mafia and the CIA in attempts to assassinate Castro.

There is no foolproof "witness protection program" anywhere.

No one is safe until residents of the USA demand better of their government.
