Nicaragua Offers Edward Snowden Asylum, Venezuela Promptly Follows

Tyler Durden's picture

Update: First Nicaragua, now Venezuela.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Friday he had decided to offer asylum to former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, who has petitioned several countries to avoid capture by Washington.

"I have decided to offer humanitarian asylum to the young American, Edward Snowden, so that in the fatherland of (Simon) Bolivar and (Hugo) Chavez, he can come and live away from the imperial North American persecution,"

Maduro told a televised parade marking Venezuela's independence day. Snowden is believed to be holed up in the transit area of a Moscow international airport.

And so the "lead investor" principle comes to the asylum world. Now everyone wants a piece of the pie.

Earlier:

Just the headline for now from AFP...

We can't help but wonder how long before the US Marines invade again and take him home...

Via Reuters,

Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega said on Friday that he had received an asylum request from U.S. fugitive Edward Snowden and could accept the bid "if circumstances permit."

Via LaJornada,

President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, said today ready to grant asylum to the informant and U.S. secret services specialist Edward Snowden, and said he would "be happy, if circumstances allow."

Speaking at a rally against government supporters in Managua, Ortega confirmed that Snowden sought refuge in this country, through a letter delivered in recent days to the Nicaraguan embassy in Russia.

UPDATE: Via Russia Today,

"We are open, respectful of the right to asylum, and it is clear that if circumstances permit it, we would receive Snowden with pleasure and give him asylum here in Nicaragua," Ortega said at a public event.

What puzzles me, or maybe I should not be puzzled, is how these countries announce these decisions via a megaphone.

Why can't they just get the message to him directly or quietly?

Its almost as of they want to be "shouted down" by their peers...that is, world governments.

Then they can say, "Hey look peeps, we tried but we've got trade agreements and foreign blackmail...errr, ummm aid arrangements coming in to think about, for you."

He needs to stay in Russia or the most "unfriendly" to the US place there is...go underground and emerge as a different man...its the only way.

So is the US intelligence community devious or incompetent?

Mistakenly thought Snowden was on the plane and risk an international incident in an attempt to catch him. = Desperate and incompetent?
Or

They knew he was not on the plane were attempting provoke someone in South America into offering him asylum. = Attempting to distract from something else?

It was a test to see what would happen if he was rumored to be on the plane.

Best way out might be a Russian military flight.

I think it's part of the political solution on their end. If something happens to Snowden after asylum is announced, it looks worse for the US than if something happens while he's "unprotected."

I think the bigger question is how does he move, when the US is willing to commit acts of war to prevent that from happening. If the president of an entire country isn't safe, how can Snowden be?

All he has to do is fly Soviet-flagged carrier to Caracas or Havana.

If Havana, Castro will see he gets to Caracas.

IF he comes back to USA, you will have to assume he is a plant. There will be a secret trial, but he will actually be in the witness protection program.

Look, I am happy he seems to be giving the finger to the PTB, along with everyone else.

However, what has he actualy released?

If he has The Big Stuff, why have we not seen information on Ben Ghazi, the fake killing of bin Laden, economic information on PM and currency manipulation, or information confirming the provenance of one Hawaiian born politician? And there is more, each of you can think of a truly stunning info dump on a subject that would cause true damage to TPTB.

Now I am an old guy, but I have been around this stuff for years. Notice I wrote "Soviet" out of habit. I just caught that. What I am trying to say is you have to get beyond the headline stuff and really think things through.

For instance, think about Putin's reaction: he can stay IF he stops releasing information. Put your thinking caps on, that is a red flag, no pun intended.

Spookland is run by chess masters, contrary to popular scepticism.

Buyer Beware.

Daniel Ortega is the Abraham Lincoln of Nicaragua. Anyone who is informed regarding the history of the US brutality in Central America can do nothing but cerlebrate the victory of the Nicaraguan people over the US evil empire. Those who say otherwise are either ignorant or are simply jingoistic US trolls. The US is the most bloodthirsty empire the world has ever known when a true body count is done, and when the sum of human suffering and pain that we have caused, committed and supported is finally tallied. I am ashamed to be an American, and I hate what America has become - as contrasted with the vision that the founders had for our country. I am an American, and I love what we should be, and could be, but I hate what we have been made into by a small minority of greedy, evil, ignorant tyrants who have managed to dominate the political process for generations.

  • 1834 - Elected to Illinois State Legislature (success)
  • 1835 - Sweetheart died (not his fault)
  • 1836 - Had nervous breakdown
  • 1838 - Defeated in run for Illinois House Speaker
  • 1843 - Defeated in run for nomination for U.S. Congress
  • 1846 - Elected to Congress (success)
  • 1848 - Lost re-nomination
  • 1849 - Rejected for land officer position
  • 1854 - Defeated in run for U.S. Senate
  • 1856 - Defeated in run for nomination for Vice President
  • 1858 - Again defeated in run for U.S. Senate

There are only two places I would consider going if I was in Snowden's situation. Either one would be fine:

The damage inflicted on the USA was from the financial institutions.  Their bait and switch scheme on a global scale has been a success.  The upheaval is just an RT TV click away.  People are suffering in a fashion not even a Roadside instrument  of war can do, it's a slow hemorrhage and the sudden paralyzing fear when forced to acknowledge, our elected officials have planned this all along.  Well, you can't fool me.  I know who is who here.  And you make the citizeens pay for the tearms which will send them into a warehouse to fight for their lives.

This is so goddam serious, I shudder when I believe you cannot project into the future far enough to see where this is going.  Now there is little time to fool around with trying to convince you that a nation that is insolvent will be forclosed upon and though it may be called Agenda 21 and sustainability, it's the tow truck, the sheriff with the keys.  This is a fucking overthrown of a govt and nothing less and i want SOMEONE TO STAND THE FUCK UP AND SAY IT.

Fox news.  Laugh if you would like, but it is happening.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=WyI5OpfsnoA

The most important video of all time has 111 views.  You stupid fucks are gliding along, counting your marbles, killing the pain which ever way it takes, while you appear to disregard the fact that the debt, true job situation (unlivable wage), costly health ins is going to send people into the hands of the state or govt.

It is business.  Globalization.  Investment in one country ceased, funds extracted, held in place in preparation for development, redevelopment, in an entire new economy.  Rather than sit at a table and talk about it, the plans are colored with pretty crayons and the applause is like an Amway meeting.  fucking tragic that this is going on.  it's beyond comprehension americans do not realize this is a halocaust in th emaking because the sick will not live through this.  The offensive will not either.   Depends on whom you are talking to.  Globalization is centralizing a nonelected body of govt to do as they please.  Oh sure...that will work out well.  Freedom marching in the background as these poor people are fleeced to bare bone and then sent to their graves in a FEMA coffin liner, a statistic (badge of honor) for the people writing the history books.  You better be careful.  This is no game and Americas will be targeted regardless of your loyalty.  Chased down like nazi criminals just for owing taxes your now default govt debt collectors, will leave you with NOTHING.

No wonder these countries hate the US. The US involvement like this is not what the writers of the constitution wanted.

Awesome? How will Snowden's mighty conscience fare under Maduro and Ortega, those twin paragons of virtue who know nothing of smashing the rights of others? Oh well, the man with the sensitive +  burdened conscience will gag himself in order to get along.

In Amerika, we simply put them on a kill list. Don't lecture us on "rights" when those who are charged with protecting OUR rights, don't give a shit about rights or justice.

Agent FUD, nice try at deflection & redirection.  Not buying what you're selling.  Unlike some here, I don't have ADD and won't go for the bait.

The REAL debate is not about the Snowden minutia, but the facts exposed, that were previously only 'suspected' and 'rumored'.

Now go see your handler or take your ADD pill.

One journalist offers advice to Edward, should he accept Venezuela's offer of asylum:

http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2013/07/10/what_edward_snowden_sho...

"You'll soon see that there are thousands of Venezuelans who would love to flee and start over in other countries. Long lines of people hoping to snag visas or passports form each morning outside the U.S. and European embassies in Caracas. After you arrive, we could counsel them on the best way to leave.....

You'll do fine down here, Señor Snowden, and hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans support you and your crusade. But many more down here wonder why you would ever want to come to a country that constantly violates the very principles you're fighting for."

He wanted to go to Iceland, understandably.

As for "decency" --do you really think this sort of thing fills that bill?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/venezuela-shows-that-it-cant-hand...

"The regime and its intelligence services are determined to punish the journalist for his reporting. In April, a government-orchestrated propaganda campaign claimed that Mr. Bocaranda incited opposition supporters to violence following a disputed election to choose Mr. Chávez’s successor. Now he has been summoned for questioning by a state prosecutor, who says her “presumption” is that he is “the intellectual author” of alleged violent attacks on state offices.

The charges are patently absurd. The evidence against Mr. Bocaranda consists of a single tweet he sent out, reporting ballot-box irregularities in the city of Maracaibo."

Chavez was odious, but not dumb.  Venezuela has their gold, unless Maduro robs it (or if Chavez did before he died).

And of course, in the future Venezuela's gold is vulnerable to a "Tunisia Style" robbery by a departing tyrant.

“If anything happens at all to Edward Snowden, he told me he has arranged for them to get access to the full archive.”

I am 99.9% certain that if Snowden were to return to the US - with whatever assurances he was given by Obama's criminal government about his treatment and access to justice and whatever publicity surrounded his arrival back in the US - a re-run of Bradley Manning would follow. He would very quickly disappear out of sight into some unknown prison location where he would be seriously maltreated.

Right from the beginning of the Snowden circus which begun at the Guardian paper (reflecting the views of the left wing of British intelligence), it was suggested that MI6 is deeply involved in this limited hangout Psyop. During Friday, July 5, The UK government (and the Guardian) continued to leverage the public fallout from this crisis in order to further complicate relations between the US and the EU by blocking the first crucial talks on intelligence and espionage between European officials and their American counterparts. For some mysterious reason, there is apparently no mention of the UK’s massive data mining operation run through GCHQ which hands data over to the NSA… Details here: http://osnetdaily.com/2013/07/nsa-leaks-fallout-british-crisis-mongering-continues/

Best keep an on eye when Snowden leaves Moscow and fire up www.flightradar24.com to watch progress.

Most interesting will be what he travels on. Will it be an Aeroflot flight to Cuba?

The last Russian flight to Cuba he was thought to be on changed its flight path soon after it passed over Swedish airspace taking it down directly over US land territory, instead of flying down off the East Coast, where it was very vulnerable to being forced or shot down if Obama went completely mad.

Will the increasingly unstable / unpredictable Obama attempt to force down a Russian flight?

He got away doing that against Bolivia, but he wouldn't get away with it against Russia.

Quite possibly.

Hence the previous change of Aeroflot flight path taking it directly over Cleveland, Atlanta and Tampa. Bringing it down over heavily populated areas would have made it very difficult for Obama to deny responsibility and blame it on technical problems with the plane, like TWA 800.

Russia could NOT care less! Snowden is their pawn, trapped between a poke in O'Bummer's eye and zero responsibility for being on their soil. This is the perfect outcome for Russia, the continuing open wound to stick their finger in. They would keep him forever in limbo.

You say that Russia does not care less about Snowden. Maybe true. The point of my previous comment was the possibility that the criminal "Obama" might consider forcing down a Russian flight with Snowden on board. Methinks that Putin would care a lot about that. No?

It is a sad day in America! I love my country but, my country is WRONG! When we choose to indite the people who don't follow illegal orders it is a very sad day. My country is wrong Snowden is a HERO! It's also sad that saying that now my land me on the no fly list. What have we fallen to? Our freedom was fought by so many from Geo. Washington to Dr. King and we arrive here at TYRANNY. One day in our future will we have a celebration Snowden day? If not I fear we never recover our loss. I had thought for some time that Nixon was not as bad as history or my memory had painted him. Now however he should have been on trial along with J. Edgar Hoover as traitors to our freedom. We let these incidents go unpunished as we did Ollie North and this is our reward for not protecting the slightest incursion on our freedom. O'Bummer must be impeached!
