Boeing 777 Crashes In San Francisco (NBC: 2 Dead, Up To 70 Injured) - Live Feed

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE: NBC Reporting 2 Dead, *SF GENERAL HAS '10 TO 12' CRITICALLY INJURED FROM JET CRASH

Just over an hour ago an Asiana plane inbound from Seoul, South Korea, crash landed at San Francisco airport. Given the images below, it is a miracle no one is reported dead (among the 291 passengers and 12 crew). An eyewitness noted:

  • *AIRLINER TAIL HIT NEAR END OF RUNWAY, EYEWITNESS TELLS CNN,
  • *AIRLINER SPUN COMPLETELY AROUND ON LANDING, WITNESS TELLS CNN

As far as they know, NBC reports, the pilot made no distress calls prior to landing and Federal officials indicate no indication of terrorism. The San Francisco airport will be holding a press conference shortly.

Local NBC news is reporting that the plane appeared to power-up as it was landing short and its tail hit the seawall.

as the plane hit the seawall...

Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg was supposed to be on the flight, but choose United instead. She posted the following on Facebook:

Taking a minute to be thankful and explain what happened. My family, colleagues Debbie Frost, Charlton Gholson and Kelly Hoffman and I were originally going to take the Asiana flight that just crash-landed. We switched to United so we could use miles for my family's tickets. Our flight was scheduled to come in at the same time, but we were early and landed about 20 minutes before the crash.

Time for the "HERO MEME" to switch on.... Don't think of the crash; commercial aviation safe for 75 years, flight crew saved lifes, passengers stayed behind to help blind kids onto the slide, all the while singing "I love Obama". Lukcily Fire Crews were doing a drill by the Bay. A 3-legged German Sheppard peed on the fire in the Cargohold.

Prayers to the families of the dead and injured... but you know its coming all next week.

This Lac-Megantic, Quebec train explosion looks a lot worse--a driverless train carrying crude oil from South Dakota barreled into the middle of town, derailed, and then blew the town up. Freaking nuts--loads of people missing, everything on fire...

What the hell are american rail cars doing way the hell up there filed with oil?  Another case of "all this oil and no place for it to go."  Soon, there will be more oil and gas than rail cars, storage tanks, and pipe.  Soon we will be channel stuffing it in people's swimming pools.

I can't find any runway (via Google Earth) at SF International with the markings shown in the two NBC photos in the story.

Edit: The runways with the markings shown point out to sea, so it couldn't have hit the "seawall".

According to nanional stats 115 people die in car crahses daily in America.

If drunk illegals are responsible for 2 of those per week, than it's a pretty damn good track record. And maintaining the stats for a couple of decades, you say?! Dang! If their flying's as good as their driving, let's get'em to fly planes too!

What successful touchdown? The thing dragged over the sea edge well short of the landing area of the runway. The debris did not go backward from the aircraft, it was left there from impact of some degree. Beside that, I am speculating on the next phase of how TPTB can use this since all of the fear mongering of North Korean intentions has faded away.

Pilot inattention precipitated this.

A factory building collapses in Bangladesh killing over 1000 people and Zero Hedge doesn't even make a SINGLE mention of it. I guess collapsing buildings killing over a thousand people are common enough it doesn't deserve mention.

A plane crashes close to landing killing 2 people and injuring a whopping 70 and they have up to the minute coverage of it.

Gold.

Sadly this same illogical coverage will also be seen in the mainstream media for the next week and change.

And to those that don't see a problem with it...just imagine what the coverage here and elsewhere would be if a factory in the U.S. collapsed and over 1k people died.

In my opinion 95% chance it's pilot error.  The guy stalled it on short final.  Wasn't paying attention to his airspeed, got too slow, and fell out of the sky.  Got behind the power curve before he realized he was sinking, and didn't have enough power to stop the excessive descent rate (the engines take some time to spool up).  I'd also bet that it was the copilots landing and he was a low time Korean national.

Icarus knows.  Personal experience with stalls.  I stalled out because my wings melted.  All pure speculation at this point in time.

Yes but with the BA crash experience there is a chance it was mechanical. An eye-witness said the landing wheels did not make it over the sea-wall so it crashed way short. A bit strange the plane was not centered on the runway. It was wide right.

I landed a Piper Cherokee at SFO - something I'll never do again.

SFO doesn't have a bad reputation for landings (other than the fog and the closely-spaced runways). Takeoffs to the west are sometimes interesting since the Coastal Range isn't that far from the airport.

Weather was reported clear. This accident is unlikely to be the fault of the airport.

Hmm. Strange Days.

You'd have thought that Train crash carrying Oil in Quebec in the centre of town would have spiked ZH news, especially given the Train - Pipeline angle (Buffet vrs 'Other Concerns') and little details like there were was no-one piloting said train [confused reports: initially "driver jumped" switched to "automated" - confused track back], and it's been reported by an eye witness (who are always unreliable) as "going far too fast".

Obligatory eyewitness videos.

93 containers, 4-8 exploded, mid town.

Initial reports stated that >60 people were missing; at this point only one person has been confirmed dead. (Note: if you're missing in a busy bar area, with houses burnt down, you might be on Holiday, we can hope that's true. Looking @ the Google updated maps, both the local bar & firestation are in the centre of the explosion).

I hope for Quebec, and Canada, this is limited to a single person. Thoughts for those affected. Peace but more importantly, compassion and love, and sorrow.

so much easier to watch Wolf provide the soundtrack to an endless looping video of a plane on fire at SFO

You're on an economics blog, and you don't see how this possibly could influence pipe line legislation, Canadian Law, and so on? You don't think it could possibly influence the stocks of said developers against the interests of W. Buffet?

Tell me of your homeworld, Usul.

You certainly don't understand politics dear, let alone economics. Unlike the USA, where you're all whores, Quebec has some legal bite left. Don't expect the fines to be meager (and looking at the split political support for the pipe-line, looks like some parties will make serious bank off this: one might think this was a perfect event for them, timed in the middle of a town on a Friday night and all).

Chance exists: weighted dice also exist. Which are you rolling? O oooh Q oooh BOOM oooh Real oooh... oh fuck it. We get it: you did it, smart bunnies. Nothing to see here, it's all cool in the days of cyberpunks. Top tip: what you charge $1.87 million for, your average huckster can do for $1284. Don't confuse shitty Iraq tech with a developed country; that's a big mistake, Huckleberry.

Reporting from Canada and yes there has been a greyout on this particular story.

Related to the TPP - I don't know:

http://openmedia.ca/blog/tpp-negotiations-quietly-arrive-canada

Open Media is focussing on certain small issues while missing the bigger ones imho.

I know a shitload of people in montreal of all political stripes and none of them have elevated this story.

That being said, rail infrastructure in canada has been sucking over the past few years.

It's bad, real bad, the Montreal paper is quoting people saying they got out but everyone else in (whatever bar) died.  Some of the photos from the Montreal paper show blocks just leveled.

I agree, much bigger story than this one.  But, in all likelihood ZH will cover it some way somehow.  Because ZH provides.

PS I know that the US EIA has been having serious difficulties getting data on rail shipments of oil out of the Dakotas.  That will be an interesting pressure point for starters.

http://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.cfm?id=588&t=6

Does EIA have data on the movement of crude oil and ethanol by rail and truck?

EIA has published several articles on the volumes of crude oil, refined petroleum products, and ethanol transported by railroads and trucks within the United States; see Learn more section below. However, we do not publish this data on a regular basis.

We are aware that there are increasing volumes of crude oil being moved by rail. Increases in crude oil production in North Dakota, Texas, and other states, have exceeded the capacity of existing pipelines to move oil from these areas to refineries in other areas of the country. Large volumes of crude oil inventories at Cushing, Oklahoma can also be attributed to the over capacity issue. Ethanol is mainly transported by rail from ethanol producing facilities to blending and export terminals.

The petroleum and ethanol movement data we currently collect only includes volumes moved by pipeline, tanker (ship), and barge. We have no plans at this time to expand this data collection to include rail and highway transport. EIA is not aware of another Government source that publishes these data.

To the people making fun of this, you're idiots. Despite the derp landing, the guy on the end of the plane who probably died a shitty death isn't something to be laughing at. Yes the toilet probably exploded upon landing, but thats no reason to mock this most unhonorable of fates.

Mark my words, I know what I'm talking about here.

The electronic glideslope for both runways 28 were inop. Not a big deal; routine really, especially with clear weather, at least for most Western pilots. Korean pilots, however, are much more dependant on automation. Shooting a visual approach without a glideslope is a challenge for these guys.

This accident is pilot error, plain and simple. However, there will be (unnecessary) focus on the glideslope, and why it was inop.

Given that a visual approach is fairly straightforward, particularly in clear conditions and even if the VASI / PAPI lights are out, it will be interesting to find out if there was some type of mechanical or instrument failure / malfunction that caused the pilot to come in low. Control surface problems? Engine issues?

There are reports that the plane was jerking around on final, but well before getting anywhere near the runway.

Once they fish the BBs out of the water, solid answers will come rather quickly.

There was a problem with the landing gear. The pilot noticed the problem and communicated it to the control tower on ground. Even told them to call up an ambulance in case of a casualty. Don't be so hasty to jump to conclusions.

While I'm often disappointed when ZH partakes in the accident-o'-the-day, I'm more intrigued by the comments.

There seems to be more intensity and resolve and something-to-prove over the accidents than there is over a much simpler and more disastrous non-accident force that is dragging you down, and has been for decades.

And if you don't recognize what that force is, it will certainly get worse.

For those disparaging "Asian pilots," the Japanese fighter pilots in WWII were widely respected throughout the Pacific for their piloting skills.  At the start of the war, with the aid of the Mitsubishi Zero, the Japanese routinely cut the Allied planes to ribbons.

And most, if not all of them, died.  They had the advantage that their country had been preparing for war for several years while ours had not.  Their superiority in performance and/or equipment lasted a very short amount of time with terminal results (pardon the pun).  I wouldn't be inclined to attribute their initial success to their nation of origin, but rather to the advance planning of their military.

Good point.  By your logic Nigerian and Rwandan air force pilots should perform on par with the USAF or RAF as long as they have sufficient "advance planning of their military."

FYI - the Zero was based on the FW-190 without armor plating to make it lighter. Yes I know the FW-190 came a few years later but the Germans/Nazi snuck the design to Japan long before Pearl Harbor.

As other mentioned, Korea Air and other Korean airlines have had problems in the past with communications between the flight crew and deference to the captain. This caused dangerous problems.

The supposed shuddering on the approach may be evidence that the captain may not be at fault. As bizarre as this may sound - I wonder if they ran the tanks dry.

Sun, 07/07/2013 - 05:58 | 3727866 smacker
smacker's picture

If they'd run the tanks dry (itself an offence), that wouldn't explain reports that the pilot powered up and pulled the stick back seconds before he hit the tarmac/seawall.

It looks like the pilot may have switched to manual too late in the landing procedure and then realised he was short of the runway and attempted to correct it ...too late. This would explain the tail smashing down onto the beginning of the tarmac and breaking off.

The reported shuddering/wobbling may be explained by major changes in configuration by the pilot in control of landing when he switched to manual.

The big question is why they switched to manual when the B777 can easily land on auto at SFO.

Pre-planned airline pilot training? A decision by the captain?

Taking a minute to be thankful and explain what happened. My family, colleagues Debbie Frost, Charlton Gholson and Kelly Hoffman and I were originally going to take the Asiana flight that just crash-landed. We switched to United so we could use miles for my family's tickets. Our flight was scheduled to come in at the same time, but we were early and landed about 20 minutes before the crash. Our friend Dave David Eun was on the Asiana flight and he is fine.

Thank you to everyone who is reaching out - and sorry if we worried anyone.

Serious moment to give thanks.

and as for the fate of the other 300 on board - oh, were there other people on the plane besides my friend David Eun (current Twitter hero of this event)? anyway I am just fine and will be talking to Mark on my return about this flying public shit and thanks again to all my adoring followers and fans.

PS if my assistant could please line up interviews with the financial media whores I will give them each 5 minutes next week upon approval of the other guests and specific time slot.

"Local NBC news is reporting that the plane appeared to power-up as it was landing short and its tail hit the seawall."

In other words, when the Korean pilot saw that his landing was in trouble he opted to get his own ass as high as possible above the damage and to hell with the people in the back of the plane. Those are the cheap seats anyway. "If I can save the first class section nothing else matters."

Wow - NSA must have a fully staffed troll division working on incidents like this. Every 10th posting is sooooo obvious. Amazing. Do you assholes really think you are not obvious? Wrong! Isn't there anyone in NSA top management who can put together a troll program that doesn't give itself away within the first few words of a posting? Are you all really so incompetent? Its actually pretty scary, if you think about the legitimate threats to the security of the US and the managers of the fools who troll this site and others like it are in charge of doing something to reduce the threat potential. Jesus. Just go away until you can do a credible job.

Nonstop coverage of a tragic event. And it most certainly is.

If the MSM spent even half the effort covering that other tragic event of the coup of the monetary system in 1913 that's still on going and crushing the people's livelihood...only if.

It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning.

I've flown with elitist libtards like JFK jr. They end up exceeding their ability and kill a perfectly good airplane, or they scare the shit out of themselves and never fly again.
Pretending to know shit, and copying others' answers might work in politics, and government jobs but in the cockpit it will get you, your crew and passengers, and a perfectly good plane, or helicopter killed.

Some of your other examples and many others have credibility. Like our sec of commerce under Cliton. Ron B

Sorry to be so cold-blooded, but I wish that CEO bitch form Facesuck had been on that plane. Oh, wait, then TPTB would most certainly have called this obvious pilot error situation a "terra-rist" attack on the "freedom and democracy" which the US "represents in a stable, sane and compassionate sense to the rest of the world". btw, as a bay area resident, I have flown in on that very run-way;one time in the "80's, but for a very competent pilot, we'd have ended up, right wing first, into the drink which precedes that sea-wall at the beginning (or end) of the run-way. I've known many pilots - my cousin happens to be one - who say that they HATE landing at SFO because the wind-shears which pilots can count on encountering during the final descent are wicked. On that flight in the 1980's, our right wing, which I was sitting directly over, tipped suddenly to the right, toward the ocean, we all screamed, but the pilot was a very experienced man who, thank god, worked directly out of SFO and had been in many similar landing situations at SFO. I've never seen anyone with reflexes as fast as his. We were very lucky; but now I always, except when travelling internationally, use OAK.
