CNBC Viewership Collapse Continues; Cramer, Kudlow Audience At Record Lows

Tyler Durden's picture

What can be said here that we haven't said countless times before? If the braintrust behind Comcast's acquisition of the CNBC package deal, not to mention assorted increasingly more desperate CNBC producers, had hoped that an artificial "wealth effect" created under a central planning world would lead to greater viewership, more retail stock market participation, and better advertising terms (not to mention revenues), they were wrong. Very, very wrong.

The Nielsen rating of CNBC's business day audience:

Adding insult to the injury that is laughable total business day viewership back to only 2005 levels (and back to 1994 levels, when the bulk of today's traders weren't even born, in the demo) despite countless promo dollars, endless schmoozathons with the 0.01%ers, and trillions in dollars spent on bailing out fake and artificial markets and thus the TV channels covering them, were the following data points from Nielsen Media:

  • Squawk Box had its lowest rated month since August 2005. Seemingly not even Joe Kernen's caustic wit, impeccable sarcasm, conspicuous coiffe and wry humor (if only in his own mind) and ARS' access journalistic "skills" are enough to unsink this particular Titanic
  • Squawk on the Street had its lowest rated quarter and second lowest rated month ever
  • Kudlow Report had its lowest ever rated month and quarter ever. Not even King Dollar can save Larry
  • Mad Money had its lowest ever rated month and quarter ever. Sorry Jim: maybe stick to your hedge fund. Oh wait

The biggest irony, of course, is that to regain the lost viewership, CNBC needs precisely the kind of Bernanke-free volatility and real, unmanipulated markets that it itself preaches against every single day.

Oh well: it's been fun.

Update:

Thanks to observent readers, we just learned that none other than the abovementioned Larry Kudlow, alongside Deutsche's Joe LaVorgna, best known for such empirical studies as Groundhog Phil vs. Joe LaVorgna, and Joe LaVorgna vs Randomness, And Randomness Wins, decided to counter our argument (first noted here in December 2010) that the American New Normal is a part-time one, something which even the USA Today admitted yesterday.

We will let readers watch the clip below, which concluded with CNBC inviting Zero Hedge to participate on CNBC. While we appreciate the offer, the last thing we intend to do is i) to boost assorted Comcast TV properties' record low ratings, and ii) suffer Mr. Kudlow the same fate as that experienced by his predecessor Dennis Kneale who also invited Zero Hedge on his laughable excuse for a show in 2009, only to be sacked a few months later.

Finally, unlike various slideshow-heavy, Preferred Round ZZ financial tabloids, we have no use for CNBC or appearances thereon.

I remember her writings for the Journal were constantly reflective of a Keynesian mindset, and she's just as bad on air.  Also, her questions for the guests often make me cringe.  Sorry, but I think she is one of the worst (along with Cramer.  Jesus someone shut that guy up already.) on CNBC.

I would watch CNBC less, but Bloomberg seems to have an infatuation with social-media and tech companies.  Both these channels are really going downhill.

I'm with you, YC, can't blame people for being attractive in a visual medium, and though she's probably a bit left of my views, Evans (and Tausche) are clearly heads and tails intellectualy above Maria and that Ken doll Westgate.  I think they underestimate the intellectual level of their potential viewers (perhaps 'potential' should have been in all caps).  If they assume those will grade school educations like Cramer, they might try shooting a little higher in the other shows.  "Fast Money" is obviously not a real trading show (just a broker-sponsored invitation to overtrade one's IRA), so perhaps replacing that timeslot with a round table, talkshow format might be better.

Maybe for about 20 minutes [until the FCC shut them down]

~~~
Which, [paranthetically ^^^], is an idea that I think I'll risk trying out here...
Most of you motherfuckers think I'm a 'jew' hater... I've said, many times. I'M NOT... I'm interested in 'THE TRUTH'... Maybe my interpretation of 'THE TRUTH' is skewed, but I cannot help but NOT to observe & be massively impressed by 'mathematical & statistical anomalies & asymmetries'...
I mean, for 'chrissakes'... One would assume that ZH would be chock full of 'technical market chart analysts' that could tell you at the drop of a hat which DATA was skewed, or which 'markets' were oversold or overbought... I'm just a fucking dipshit... I shouldn't have to explain that concept to ANYONE...
So... Over time... I've spoken about the 'statistical asymmetry' of, let's call them, 'ethnicities', involved in:
- BANKING
- MSM
- POLITICAL ACTIVISM
- JURISPRUDENCE
...a casual survey of "ZH THREAD TOPICS" ought to indicate an 80+% preponderence of those issues [& more IMPORTANTLY ~ "who" happens to be involved in them]...
So ~ I've not been afraid to focus on ASYMMETRIES [within] those topics...
Let's leave that aside for a moment and get back to TV [the 'MSM' bullet point]... IOW ~ Let's 'forget' about facts like:
- Rothschild is at the head of the pyramid of more than a dozen families who 'OWN' the [non]Federal [non]Reserve
- or that 25 out of 27 Fed Chairs have been jewish
- or that Goldman Sachs, JPM, & the revolving door of US Treasury Secretaries [including Summers, Rubin, Geithner, & Lew] come from these ranks...
- or, the MAIN "K" St. funded activists [& where that money goes]
- or, the makeup of the Supreme Court [directly ~ of by sponsorship]... & let's just laugh about the state & district legislature & the shysters within that system
Let's focus on 'Hollywood'... [& let's even forget about the fact that MGM, Disney, Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, Miramax Films, Weinstein brothers, & a host of others are all run by jews]... Let's forget that, NOTWITHSTANDING the 2% representation in the world, that the following list of 'DIRECTORS', is the "who's who" in Hollywood...
http://www.imdb.com/list/0xB2zkHnXUk/
Let's forget ~ That MANY lives were shaped... emotionally... by watching these FAMOUS actors & actresses while growing up...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Jewish_actors
~~~

My point IS NOT to criticize all these fine artists & entrepeneurs...

Instead ~ I'm just wondering about 'culture' [culture, as evidenced by 2% of the population procuring more than 80% of the INFLUENCE]...

Let me put it another way... Imagine I, francis_sawyer, were a negro growing up somewhere after the advent of television [but BEFORE, say, 1990]... I mean ~ except for 'COSBY', what the fuck IDENTIFICATION did I have with 'Father Knows Best', 'Leave it to Beaver', 'Dennis the Menace', 'Have Gun Will Travel', 'Gunsmoke', 'Gidget', 'Get Smart', 'Howdy Doody', 'The Partridge Family', 'Dick Van Dyke', 'Mary Tyler Moore', or 'The Brady Bunch"... I mean... fucking shit... I had to pin my hopes on 'The Mod Squad', 'Room 222', & 'The Flip Wilson Show'... I mean ~ luckily 'Sanford & Son' & 'Good Times' came along or else I think I might have busted out of Cabrini Green...

What I'm talking about is UNREALIZED DISENFRACHIZING... Nobody has ever talked about that because... [same as the way it might have seemed 'WEIRD', in the 1960's to complain about the lack of 'Cosby Shows']... There was never a movement against it...

So you gotta skip back now... This ASYMMETRY [that I speak of ~ & which the likes of 'kito' watching 'Dobie Gillis' in the early 60's can't even comprehend of, in this moment]... Is the 'ENERGY'... That I PROMISE YOU... Will come to the surface in the next decade...

It doesn't have to be violence... [unless the 'PROFIT USURPERS' of this asymmetry are willing to come to terms with the injustice]... Sadly ~ History will tell you that that's NOT the way it turns out...

That's why francis_sawyer 'FEELS SORRY' [more than anything else], for the 'kito' TRIBE... Folks will learn their lessons THE HARD WAY, if they're too arrogant to understand BALANCE [in REAL TIME]...

fonz - you're looking at this the wrong way.

If CNBC had you on for an hour their ratings would go through the roof.

They care about delivering their propaganda message.  Putting on Francis, high ratings or no would defeat that purpose.

What a fool.

Unlike the Krugster states, long term rates do not reflect expectations for short rates.  Forward rates have been shown via a veritable plethora of rigorous statistical analyses to have no predictive value regardless of their use in futures and options pricing, etc.
Long rates are best defined by future inflation expectations.

Secondly, rates have not basked up as of late due to monetary policy hawks discussing tightening of monetary policy.
Nobody is attempting to contract the monetary base or adjusted reserves, (monetarist and Austrian perspectives) nor raise the interbank borrowing rate(s) (Keynesian perspectives)

Fuckin Krugman....put him on cnbs in the morning with his trick of putting three Billiard balls in mouth at the same time and watch the ratings spike...

Anyways I have plenty of show ideas to pitch that would guarantee ratings gold....

Aside from the above Krugman trick...we can put Cramer in an rv and go coast to coast asking random people on the street what's in their portfolio....he can start in Detroit....and if makes it out then off to flint and so on....give us a real first hand perspective of the recovery taking place while he banters about stocks with the fine people of America that are living under the bridges and tunnels and Walmart parking lots of our nation.....

We can put honey boo boo on Steve liesman shoulders ala master blaster from beyond thunder dome as he interviews the fed

We can have Maria dingbat dropped off somewhere 10 miles away from lower manhattan with nothing but 3 dollars on her and watch her try to make her way back home....

We can move Bib Pisani to Las Vegas (or Atlantic city due to budget cutbacks) where he offers daily data on the red/black data coming from the craps table...

Holy shit I'm high right now lol

Part of their problem, they'd say, is technological:  mobile internet access & news feeds make counting on CNBC for 'breaking news' a 20-minute delay, and a scrolling ticker post 1990 is a joke.

At the same time, I'm convinced that, along with Tyler's strategic observations, their largest problem is one of personalities, or a lack thereof. Other than Santelli, Kayla Tausche, Carl Quintanilla, Kelly Evans and Seema Mody, virtually all of their employees have either shitty personalities or are deadly dull.  It may be passe, but people like to watch those they could imagine having lunch with and shooting the breeze, rather than game-show-host types like Sullivan or Kramer.  Replacing Maria with Tausche would be an immediate winning move, she's young, smart and could do a good job at that timeslot for years to come.

In this regard, CNBC World has them beat -- I actually like most of their hosts far better than the Bloomberg robots (except for Tom Keene, who grows on you like moss), and Bernie Lo's cynical attitude plays well given current world events.  And, without meaning to be sexist, Deirdre Wang Morris can be considered on of the most beautiful women ever to grace financial television (and hearing her precious Canadian accent on words like "about" is rather special), and though they cynically exploit this by ensuring her reports are head-to-toe medium shots, with skirts rarely below the knee, in truth she seems very young but growing in confidence and could rival Tausche, Mody and Evans as future on-air talent.  In fact, overall, their bench of young, impressive female talent in a still male-dominated industry is something they'd be wise to take advantage of, rather than exploit.  But clearly, it's high time for Maria to go ...

You have a good question.  I don't know the answer.

But, I remember, at the time, thinking, "Cramer, you're way late!  I sold weeks ago!" . . . Even though, we later set new all time highs before going much, much, lower than where I sold equities prior to thinking this, as I recall.

So . . . I'm not sure how I should think about things . . .

Forget all those people; you or I or anyone else can school them all, with only a little knowledge and practice, I think (or, at least a little more than a little).

Sorry I'm late to this post.

CNBC needs another massive market crash to get their ratings back up.

Watch, they'll get a ratings uptick when everyone opens up their retirement results for the past quarter:  "WTF!?  I thought things were fixed!?!?"

Kudlow left the reservation:  has been praising Bernanke and talking as if we have free market capitalism, and that Edward Snowden is a traitor.  Larry, Larry, Larry.

The more talented and intelligent anchors have left; really miss Melissa Francis who was hot and had a brain.  The morning tart Kelly what's her name is pretty but not quite sharp enough.

It's the only thing I get on my cheap cable 'cause I'm cheap - valuable for sarcasm and a chuckle though.

Santelli and Bill Griffiths are just about the only two sober adults on the network.

yaaaaaaaaaayyyyy...But hey, they don't even care.  Neither do CNN, MSNBS, etc.  the NBS channels get government subsidies from TARP and Microsoft (that is what the MS stands for in MSNBS of course).  So we pay for them even though we boycot them.  Just like PBS.  Nice little fuck you trick on us by .GOV, ay?

These are just propaganda channels for TPTB to use against the American public.  At least for the zombies that still turn these channels on, and obviously that's very few.

But it's enough.  These channels serve the purpose of keeping the propaganda going and thus continue the great divide and conquer left/right paradigm strategy being used against all of us to keep the hate going.

Since they're subsidised by big corporations and the government, they can afford to lose 100 million a year.  It's worth the right-off in order to be able to push those lies right up the sheeple's asses.

Not to mention also that even though most of Americans don't watch the channels we still also subsidize them through the payments in our cable and sat bills.  Al "the douche-bag" Gore's stupid channel got money from every single cable and sat bill in America and that funded his bullshit channel until he was able to pawn it off to Al Gore-zira and make a profit off those scumbags.

Turning if off and tuning out does somewhat matter.  But in reality the best thing Americans can do is shut off their cable services and just use the internet.  If I didn't have a roommate who happens to be my brother I would have done it long ago.  I mostly read while he watches TV.

But still we rarely watch anything other than sports and a couple cool shows like Deadliest Catch and other Discovery Channel and Nat Geo type stuff.  Other than that I'd say 95% of the bullshit channels we get are never looked at....yet there they are, right?

If I could shut it off I would...I can watch anything I want, especially sports on lshunter.tv.  Watched the UFC fight for free on it Saturday and was damn glad I didn't pay 60 bucks to see that piece of garbage Silva get his punk ass knocked out right away in the 2nd round! lol

You are so right Save, its pure propaganda while they keep the sheep occupied so they can accomplish the real work behind the scenes. Bet most people hadn't heard about this little story, outrageous & criminal at best...

In case you missed it. http://www.whiteoutpress.com/articles/q32013/supreme-court-rules-drug-co...

July 7, 2013. Washington. In case readers missed it with all the coverage of the Trayvon Martin murder trial and the Supreme Court’s rulings on gay marriage and the Voting Rights Act, the US Supreme Court also made a ruling on lawsuits against drug companies for fraud, mislabeling, side effects and accidental death. From now on, 80 percent of all drugs are exempt from legal liability.

In other words, if the FDA says something is safe, it doesn’t matter if that decision is wrong or the result of lies, fraud or deception on the part of the world’s pharmaceutical companies. And there’s no way to sue the FDA for being wrong and costing millions of unsuspecting Americans their lives. That result leaves 240 million Americans unprotected from an industry responsible for more preventable deaths in the US than any other cause.

Yes...the babylon media crashes...and continues to go the way of the dinosaur. Give thanks that the world is waking up faster than they can keep controlled. The people of the USA are sick and tired of the lies and constant horsewash that comes undiluted from these slime spiting liars and deceivers. Everybody knows that the babylonian system of lies is dead. No one goes to the mind controlling digital hypnotizing TV anymore for the news. They go to the net and there are plenty of places to get the real deal news. People feel the truth in the heart. They feel the lies in the gut and it makes them sick, sick, sick!

More and more and more truth sites are growing in the info war every day. More and more Truth-bearers are coming out of the closet to speak their truth to power before it is too late to do so. Everybody KNOWS WHO and WHAT is responsible for all the lies and havoc in the world today. Can you imagine they call themselves the chosen people, or dare to say, God's people? If they really were God's chosen people, they would practice what God taught, right? Like how about those Ten Commandments for a start? And how about, Love thy neighbor as yourself, and Do unto Others as you would have them do unto you?

Well, after a lot of doing, some middle eastern country is seen for the evil they are and they are NOT God's chosen people, rather some sort of reptoid-type satanic synagogue of babalonic assorted toilet bowl puppets and paltry minions from the slimiest pit of scuck you ever did saw!

Wowie, imagine all that, for what now? So this poor country could be used as the pawn to start the final solution world war in which they and their families on both sides are ALL being SET UP to be eliminated for the puppet masters agenda of population reduction and world domination purposes? Hasn't that been tried already? Who profits from a World War in an age of nuklear, biological, and chemical weapons? In the end, is it really worth it? How many more will die for the god, money?

We must remember the crucial message and keep spreading it.  Without the consent of our time and labor, the empire of gamblers, cokeheads, and welfare queens will collapse of its own weight.  Then they can have fun fucking each other up the ass in their crumbling buildings for their crumbling currency all they want.  Good luck finding anybody who will drain that rectal abscess.

CNBC is a propaganda front tor Goldman Sachs and other financiers of war against sovereign nations. They help promote the bribing of politicians and the funding of black ops covert military operations, the smack down of gold and market manipulation by the FED as well as Central Bank Fraud.

They present the Queen of England and Jamie Dimon other than their true selves--the lowest criminal degenerate scum of the species. Ok sometimes people are just too stupid like George Bush to be fully responsible for their actions. I'll give the Queen at least the benefit of the doubt.

 with kudlow, ill admit at first i actually enjoyed his show somewhat.

However, i stopped watching when after every single segment going into commerical, he gives his speech how free market capitalism is the best way, etc, yet the man supports what bernanke is doing. makes sense, huh?

It does. "Free markets" and "Capitalism" are 2 terms that they're trying to 'redefine' for us. You know, so that the concepts can be destroyed and we can no longer talk about those things.

Like those good old words "liberal", "conservative", "terrorist"...

I have more respect for Orwell every day.

I did very much enjoy seeing the Zerohedge editor on Lauren Lyster's old show Capital Account.

That was a great show. Too bad she moved on.
