Then what you've seen & heard is more than 8 years out of date. Accused muslim / arabs should have died in the process yet lived, who allegedly were in exploding planes. Israelis were caught filming the collapses & dancing in celebration. Solid evidence shows an insurance scam behind WTC 1,2 and 7 by the owner and guess what - he's not an arab / moslem / muslim.

Exactly. The same people that bough the official 9/11 story will also buy Wikileaks and Snowden.

They can't leak what isn't leaked TO them. How do you imagine actual information of high value would get delivered TO Wikileaks? Who has it? Precious few & probably any who'd blow the whistle were shot in the head in the first 2 hours to 24 hours, much less years later.

"You don't have an expectation of privacy in public places"

Your assertion is based on a faulty premise...

- Who says that the Internet is a public place?

- Who says that a Skype call I make is a public place?

- Who says that my e-mails exist in a public place?

Just because government has the technical ability to suck up all my metadata - and very likely the contents too - does not mean all these exchanges exist in a public place and that I have no right to privacy. You might just as well say that if I have the tech ability to access the NSA computer systems, that they exist in a public place and the NSA has no right to privacy.

Mon, 07/08/2013 - 20:23 | 3732565 Totentänzerlied
Totentänzerlied's picture

If you knew just how insecure the network infrastructure, software, came protocols really are, particularly in the hands of the NSA, you'd work under the assumption that it's a public place. From the perspective of "how easy is it to guaranty privacy here" it is even worse than any public place, because unlike your face-to-face spoken words, the data can be captured, duplicated, and stored indefinitely at essentially no cost by the very nature of the system.

If you ever thought it wasn't a de facto public place, let this be your very
late wake-up call. The systems are all insecure BY DESIGN. The attempts to secure them are just so much duct tape and bailing wire. Nothing short of a total redesign of all computer hardware and operating systems could solve the problem - and you better believe the NSA possesses such technology, secure by nature, not secure by accident.

Tue, 07/09/2013 - 04:34 | 3733421 smacker
smacker's picture

Sure, believe me, I know a thing or two about network & computer security...I have never believed - as Obama claims - that the NSA (& UK GCHQ) are only collecting metadata because that requires more algo effort than collecting the whole contents. What they do with the contents is another matter. I don't know.

My previous comments were not naively about how easy it maybe for the NSA to spy on peoples' Internet traffic. They were about what level of privacy people are entitled to expect when using it. And I fully accept that the Internet is a publicly accessible network. But private traffic (e-mails/Skype calls/Google searches et al) between two individuals or between an individual and server on the Internet should be exactly that: private, and not subject to state surveillance.

I do not accept - just because the NSA and UK GCHQ have the technical capability to steal my e-mail/skype communications - that they should go ahead and do so. I demand privacy from State surveillance and I demand that governments account for their activities.

We're in the murky world of "just because the state CAN do something, doesn't mean that it should".

And it's not just the state who is up to this. I recently commented on ZH that Microsoft's latest IE Browser v8 doesn't simply contain "spyware", "snoopware" or "call-homeware" but "THIEFWARE" (aka SmartScreen).

I am astonished that legal action has not already been taken against Microsoft.

One can construct an argument to claim that Snowden doesn't exist in the way we've been lead to believe because he hasn't been seen for several weeks. It's also possible he did exist and has already been secretly caught by Obama's people and moved somewhere. It is also very possible that he's in a secret safe house provided by WikiLeaks or the Russians until his travel arrangements are finalised and he arrives in a safe country. Even then it may be a while before he appears on TV.

Personally, I think it's too early to make any claim on any of this yet.

Indeed. I recall a certain Aurora ex-spicerunner going on and on like a 'genius' about how nothing can be secured only to reveal he's running Windows, and while accusing me of "already being compromised" because I can see everything running and nothing is there I didn't put there... he didn't understand my system is compiled from source, Linux.

I'm sure a hard enough intrusion will get data to push through the system but to RUN things? Oh hellz no. If it isn't compiled by me it doesn't ever execute.

I hear you. I wasn't always so enlightened. I work in IT and have MCSE certifications going back to WinNT up to current versions (and beta), throw in some light Cisco (not my cup of tea), Solaris and a shit ton of VMware ( what I do now). I used to be such a miserable pathetic Microsoft fanboy, it's embarrassing to even think about it. Once I saw that manual that MS put out, that was it. I got BORN AGAIN hard for Linux. Note that where Microsoft explicitly provides a book to the Man about how to own your ass, Linux (and assorted flavors) put out tons of papers on how to keep his ass out. Those guys live for doing just that, and you should love them for it.
I've used kits that turn Windows boxes to absolute gooey mush. Windows boxes will spread like a prom date. You can get a much much harder config w/ Linux.
But what keeps me awake at night isn't so much the OS, it's the hardware.
I don't trust a single motherboard or chipset made in the last 10 yrs.

Actually, go re-read what I wrote. I was clearly referencing this Snowden level of stuff, rather than the (obvious) open nature of Windows.

I did understand that you were running Linux etc, and were running certain stuff (I think I referred to it as "being a tech ninja") - I was making an entirely different point. Go re-read what I wrote, and think about it in relation to today.

And you CERTAINLY didn't understand the references (and links, and video) of what that BlackHat was saying (about flashing ROMs through techniques you can't see running, against linux machines). I'd suggest contacting him (not me, I never claimed to be a tech ninja and made it very clear by saying I ran windows) and discussing it.

Seriously. Contact him, stop throwing poo. +1 anyhow for the humor, although you missed mine - the entire point was to make a stupid comment with a link to a pro, so you'd ignore me and talk to the pro. You're supposed to take the piss out of me; if your reaction isn't to seek out the wisdom of a blackhat pro, but to make fun of the messenger, you've already lost. Instead, you're sitting there still thinking you're safe, and insulting me is going to improve anything but your own ego.

Fuck me you people don't do META. (And please, Totalitarianised - don't bother jumping in with "I have no sense of humor, blah blah blah" - we get it already; you don't get what I'm doing, I understand what you're doing. Neither of us is going to change, and if you think this is a competition of Egos, you're playing the wrong Game.

The founding fathers studied the writings of Locke and Montesquieu who believed that people have natural rights and government is given its power by the people, not the other way around so they designed the constitution around their beliefs in human nature and one of those beliefs is that if any person or entity is allowed to have enough uncontested, unchecked power with no oversight,  they surely will abuse it.  They believed in freedom of the press.  So here we are 250 years later and their worst fears have come to fruition as the NSA, IRS, EPA, DOJ and every other acronym agency, have been allowed to avoid the constitution and been allowed to go virtually uncontested in part due to activist FISA judges, activist courts, cronyism, entrenched political dynasties (ie Bush, Clinton, Kennedy), govt. control of the press (ie James Rosen) and centralized everything.  >http://www.conservapedia.com/James_Madison

In trying to decide whether I think Snowden is a plant, the question I ask is "what purpose is served, or what advantage is gained, through the disclosures?".

I come up with 3 answers:

1) To gauge the reaction of US populace, specifically, to identify and measure the level of domestic outrage (not much, as far as I can tell). This allows TPTB to measure the extent and efficacy of their control / the populace's subservience. Just as Boston was intended to measure the extent to which the populace of a large, densely populated metropolitan area will peacefully abide martial law.

2) To create public support for increased, overt domestic surveillance in connection with a domestic crisis (which may occur due to the laws of math in the form of financial crisis, or else a "false flag" event). "We need to monitor everyone for the public's welfare and safety." I suspect the next step will be to develop a punishment/reward system for informing on your neighbors, a-la East Germany and the former Soviet Union.

3) To gauge the reaction of all of the nations we're spying on to see (a) which ones can maintain suppression of any dissent and will remain allies when the global SHTF begins in earnest (as has been proven the case with France and those nations who blocked the Bolivian president's plane -- France is Exhibit A - they are taking it in the ass and will do whatever the US tells them to do), and (b) which nations TPTB need to focus on painting as The Enemy in connection with global SHTF (since we all know that a key aspect of maintaining domestic control in a crisis is giving the populace an external bogeyman to blame).

As much as I would like to believe Snowden is the real deal, I do not think he would have come forward in such a public manner unless he had information that was so explosive that it would trigger systemically changing reactions. I just don't see a person of his poise making himself marked for death over what boils down to what was already known, or at least assumed by anyone who has followed domestic spying over years -- basically, that the government reads your Gmail and analyzes your credit card purchases.

My recollection is that Snowden said he wanted to expose systems and practices, and not people, so that people wouldn't get hurt. So far, he hasn't really done even that. In my estimate, if Snowden was legitimate, the types of practices/systems that would be worth becoming a dead man walking over would be (in no particular order):

• programs whereby government and military personnel are blackmailed

• capabilities regarding code breaking -- what types and levels of encryption can TPTB currently crack?

• capabilities regarding infiltration and remote control of systems (energy grid, Internet kill switches, remote hijacking of planes, cars, ships, etc.)

Think of the effect on e-commerce if it were known that none or almost none of the standard encryption protocols were actual secure. Or the effect on airline travel if it were confirmed that anyone with the know how could remotely hijack an airliner or a train. Because if the USA can do it, it is probably safe to assume that other regimes can too, or can at least credibly threaten to do so. And if just 5-10% of people stopped buying stuff online, or stopped flying, that would have a meaningful negative impact on commerce, which would have a definite impact to the ailing global economy.

So, in short, I am currently in the camp that believes Snowden is a plant, because the "revelations" are not commensurate with the risks he took. I could be wrong - there are a lot of really smart, articulate "messiah" types, but I don't have any basis to conclude that fits here.

There's no end to the conspiracy theories one can come up with. But in the end, many just do it as a form of self-entertainment.

This is the first plant comment I read that makes sense.  I was in Snowden's camp till I read this.

Now there is doubt...

Where is he and what about the info releases?

What happened to Venuzuela's offer which expires today?

Something is not adding up.

Do you really think an agency like the NSA wants to draw attention to itself in anyway?  That's like saying SEAL Team-6 is waiting to receive their awards on national tv at the whitehouse.  DUH!

No, I don't think the NSA desires the publicity.

However, we do know now the population as a whole really is not making too much of a noise don't we?

Most could care less or have "nothing to hide".

I am not liking the direction this is going.  There should be a major uproar, but there isn't any.

Operation Paperclip brought Nazis into the USA, and the CIA assists,  after Western banksters funded Hitler and he failed, and they resumed their mission in South America.

The NSA is full on Nazi. So is the CIA. Pretty pets in CONgress are owned by the un-Federal no-Reserve Bored.

OK. Voters like that.

But my issue is this: career politicans and nazis have failed. Wasting MY money. MY people. MY land.

Prepare to defend your failed statists.

The world is a team effort, and contest of ideas. You are losing, for excusing abject failure.

Snow-den worked for an Israeli owned private security company owned by Carlyle Group.

YOU HAVE BEEN HAD, PAL.

And I would also consider who benefits from spreading the meme that he is a plant.

Over the past decade most whistleblowers have been gagged, marginalized or depicted as tin foil hatters even though most have eventually been proven correct (abuses at Guantanamo, illegal renditions, false pretences for Iraq war, Libor fixing, etc.)

I cannot be bothered to read this latest release.

I'm no friend of JPM or GS, but do pay attention to the fact that Snowden reveals nothing that wasn't known already, he has offers of asylum from certain countries and declines their asylym in countries owned by his CIA Nazi employer, but he still spouts stuff which was known before, but only now the main scream media owned by a few families promote him

Al-CIAda, the Nazis brought into the USA under Operation Paperclip. Prepare to defend yourself, your clients, your money.

Snowed in goes East. Who went West? Snowed in goes North. Who went South?

O'bomba/Kerry pets, and the Internationale which wants your money. The Nazionists who care nothing for jews, christians, muslims and do so very much like their creation: the House of Saud, and hate the Far East, the world's oldest continuous civilisations (used by Apple, Microsoft slave labor)... and the USA, the Constitution, the new Republic which they also want to make slaves.

On a long enough timeline...

Is it conceivable that HE thought this was groundbreaking stuff because HE never heard about it until he saw it firsthand? I know foreign media has already blown the lid off the universal wiretap, but maybe Snowden hadn't been doing his homework? Not many people do..

(edit)I mean the focus seems to be entirely on what he *hasn't* said/revealed.. Wouldn't it be a simple explanation that he said what he knew, which happens to be less than everyone here expects him to have known?

Very likely, 'Morla'. He is a useful idiot or educated fool, as nazionists - the

But "it wouldn't be hard" doesn't mean that's how it went down. Snowden could be legit, just not the all-knowing conspiracy scholar everyone here is hoping for.

I don't know, myself, I just don't think "Why didn't he say A, B, or C?" automatically indicates a calculated omission.

Both Snowden and Manning witnessed crimes and had a duty to speak out, he says. Defenders of the NSA programs say the Patriot Act makes them legal, though whether they violate the Constitution’s 4th Amendment against unwarranted searches and seizures will be decided by the courts after a lawsuit lodged by the American Civil Liberties Union. Other suits may follow.

Violating the Constitution seems to be a habit of CONgress, the pets of lobbyists, serving their Internationale.

Game over. They are bust. Let them die with their lies, and yes, hold them accountable under the Constitution. One for all; all for one. Anyone who dislikes the Constitution should leave immediately.

We should remember that that un-Federal no-Reserve Board was founded by international financiers who want to own all, and don't care who dies for their Internationale, freak failed globalist agenda which blew up in 2008...yet they want their money, no matter if they kill their high ranking managers in the process, Blankfein and Dmon in particular...an ongoing slow death for GS and JPM.

Accurate, however money is what politics is not. Useful. I'm unhappy with the GS JPM politically active managers, but I don't blame them for the failings of the Internationale who employ them. Life is evolution, not revolution which always fails.

Blankfein, Dimon and Bernanke do as they are told. The strategy failed. They simply followed orders.

I have my doubts that Snowden ever went to Russia. You have to wonder why he was not sighted by a single passenger or reporter. http://rt.com/news/snowden-fly-moscow-aeroflot-125/

He could've gone out into international waters, he could've docked at one of the many islands surrounding Hong Kong. Or, he may never have been in Hong Kong in the first place. (Deflection.) His reporter pals at the Guardian may have done him a favor by adding that intro to the video interview showing a Hong Kong scene with the words "Hong Kong" overlaid on it. HK could've gone along with the ruse, given they're affronted by the NSA scandal, and they could've simply decided to say "He left through normal channels."

The Guardian is subject to UK law and could mount a successful public interest defence if challenged.

Also the Official Secrets Act does not apply to foreign intelligence services so Snowden has not committed any crime within the UK.

Snowden is an intelligent operator and has obviously learnt from Manning's errors. He has outwitted the US Govt. at every stage and has a long life ahead of him.
