Stasi Vs The NSA: Compare And Contrast
The German President, Joachim Gauck, concluded in a recent interview, that the NSA was not to be compared with the Stasi, because, [paraphrasing] "it is not like it was with the Stasi, where there exist big filing cabinets in which all our conversations are written down." No, indeed, nothing like that. As OpenDataCity notes, at the NSA, conversation contents are neither written down nor filed - but digitally recorded, saved and can be searched and found within seconds.
In contrast to the Stasi, the NSA can count on new technologies and can therefore collect information in gigantic quantities.

According to a report by the NPR, the data center of the NSA in Utah will be capable of saving 5 Zettabytes (5 billion Terabyte). Assuming that a filing cabinet with 60 files (30.000 pages of paper) uses up 0,4 m², which would correspond to 120 MB of data, the printed out Utah data center would use up 17 million square kilometers.
Thereby the NSA can capture 1 billion times more data than the Stasi!

Remember holographic storage? Been at least 5 years since I have heard much about it, It promised storage densities at least 100x greater than we have now. And its biggest (at the time) drawback was that it was a "write once, read many" format, which would actually be a feature for the spooks. Now think about all those companies that are being supported or outright purchased by CIA front corporations. And this wasn't some theoretical tech like quantum computing (done at near absolute zero temperature), it was something they were acutally able to do (at room temp).

Lets break this down.
Audio @ 8KB/s = 8192 bytes of storage required per second
1Terabyte = 1099511627776 bytes
seconds of audio = 1099511627776 / 8192 = 134217728
hours of audio = 37282
days of audio = 1553
years of audio = 4
Therefore if the Utah Data Center has 5 Billion Terabytes, that would equate to 20 billion years of nonstop audio recording. Now let us assume that the world has 6 billion (actual estimate) active cell phone accounts and each person spends about an hour (overestimate) on the phone each day. That would mean the UDC has enough storage to store every mobile phone call of everyone for the next 79 years or so. I made no allowances for smart phone data retrieval or population growth but the numbers are staggering.
5 billion terabytes of storage is a such a massive amount, it can only be designated for capturing EVERYTHING.
My .gov sources tell me in certain dark corners of the Beltway they nicknamed the UDC Hoover. First because it sucks up everything like a vacuum and secondly due to J Edgar's propensity for spying and keeping secret files on thousands of people.

The nuclear reactor of a large submarine or an aircraft carrier generates up to 500 Megawatts. That is enough to power a small city. I would not doubt that the spooks have installed a nuclear reactor under the Utah Data Center. Doing so would solve many problems and threats.

I was re-reading 1984 earlier today. While it's incredibly depressing, it's worth a re-read (or an essential read for anybody who hasn't read it) as it seems pretty clear that it forms part of the roadmap (arguably along with Brave New World) for where we're all heading. O'Brien's articulation of the rationale, and it's lust for power, and Winston Smith's eventual utter capitulation before the merciless utilization of that power against him, are depressing as hell, but incredibly powerful.

1984 is just the precursor to Brave New World... they're each on the same timeline, it's just that Huxley was explaining the end game and Orwell was merely explaning one step along the way. In the end, the overt control mechanisms used in 1984 are far more costly and resource consuming than those in Brave New World... it's that simple. The system will conform itself to these constraints. And it is inevitable given humans' rudimentary programming to accept comfort at the expense of independence.
I think a decent case can be made that we've already graduated from 1984 and are heading straight towards brave new world. The mechanisms are already in place to get us there... The only question is whether the best laid plans of mice and men take a pause as resource constraints tear holes through everything.

When Joachim Gauck says that the NSA cannot be compared to The Stasi, IMO he's being very disingenuous.
As ZH rightly explains, the actual techniques and methods may differ, but this simply reflects that technology has moved on. Storing data today is much better done using computers than paper filing cabinets. And it means that today, massively larger amounts of data can be collected and processed.
What Joachim Gauck should do is compare the aims and objectives of the two organisations, not the administrative methods they use. That would show quite clearly that comparisons are entirely valid and there are plenty of commonalities.
But there are still some differences. I recalled on ZH a while back that in East Germany under The Stasi, if you bought a printer to connect to your computer, it wasn't long before "they" knocked on your door to demand a sample of printer output for their files (each printer has unique characteristics). As far as I know, the NSA has not implemented this regulation ...yet.
Also, IIRC Joachim Gauck is the guy who became President despite Merkel's attempts to block him. Why? Because he knows where all HER skeletons are buried from her life in the DDR, where she had a much higher role in the Communist/Fascist regime than she is now willing to admit. I am not so sure about not having a "unique" marker
1st . Why do you think each printer has a unique Serial Number? Also the Network ones unique Network Hexadecimal ID?

Also Printers have a limited life span in order to insert the next "Bug" that cannot be traced among other benefits

Whatever, bear in mind that we are talking about the days of matrix printers, not inkjet or laser, although as you allude, even these later printers may have deliberate unique identifiers.
Matrix printers have unintended unique characteristics which can be identified in a lab and used to identify a printed page from it. Same thing applied to old typewriters.
The printer is so last millenium. Now you have SMS, messengers etc. - and all are being monitored. The smartphones are devices that monitor through microphone and video camera. The "smarttvs" monitor with sound and video. The fixed phone monitors with sound... 1984 was prescient, but we now buy from our money the monitoring devices.
