Greenwald: "The US Government Should Be On Its Knees Every Day Praying That Nothing Happens To Snowden"

Tyler Durden's picture

Edward Snowden may be America's persona most non grata in the entire world, but he has an insurance policy against "accidents": a treasure trove of supposedly damaging secrets about the US that will hit the public domain if something were to happen to the 30 year old whistleblower. A trove is so damaging that according to Glenn Greenwald, Snowden "poses more of a threat to the U.S. than anyone in the country’s history." Well, maybe a threat to the "government" which now only represents the interests of various corporations and Wall Street, but certainly not to what the US was supposed to be before it was hijacked by special interests, lobbies and the creature from Jekyll Island.

In an interview with Argentinian newspaper La Nacion, The Guardian's journalist who first broke the Snowden story, said that "Snowden has enough information to cause more damage to the U.S. government in a minute alone than anyone else has ever had in the history of the United States.

Asked if he was afraid that Snowden might be killed, Greenwald said: “If something were to happen, those documents would be made public. This is your insurance policy," according to The Hill.

"The U.S. government should be on your knees every day praying that nothing happens to Snowden, because if something happens, all information will be revealed and that would be their worst nightmare," Greenwald added.

As noted earlier, it is Latin America, China and Russia that is the model "axis" for Greenwald, as only those countries are not afraid to stand up to US bullying and intimidation. That this bipolar distribution of world powers will likely define world events for the years to come is certainly something to keep in mind.

Greenwald said the asylum offers from Latin America showed that the U.S. was less intimidating to certain countries around the world.

“Only a few countries, including several in Latin America, China and Russia, have challenged the U.S., have realized that America is no longer in a position of strength as it did before with the rest of the world, and that the rest of the countries do not have to obey their demands as if it were an imperial order,” Greenwald said.

Of course, resolving the Snowden "situation" does not have to be terminal: the 30 year old would likely survive some 40-50 years in maximum security penitentiary if preserving his life was of tantamount importance: something the US legal system, responsible for such smash hits as Eric Holder, would have no problem with.

Still, the consistent critic of U.S. intelligence policies also said that Snowden’s position was dicey, and that the leaker needed to stay out of U.S. custody – given how “extremely vindictive” American officials have proven.

The American judicial system, Greenwald said, "cannot be trusted when it comes to people accused of endangering the national security. The judges do everything they can to secure convictions in these cases."

* * *

The full interview with a rough English translation as recommended by Greenwald himself, is below:

"Snowden has enough information to cause more damage to the U.S. government in a minute alone than anyone else has ever had in the history of the United States," said the NATION Greenwald, 46, and since these latitudes write regularly on international security issues have made him famous, winner of several distinguished awards.

Today, the New Yorker, a former lawyer, is in the eye of the storm. Lawmakers in Washington want to put him on trial, spies of various countries seek Snowden secret information shared with him last month in Hong Kong and he still sent from Moscow through an encrypted email system. He knows he's being watched and that their conversations are monitored. They even steal the laptop from her boyfriend Rio, of your own home.

Three men wait in the lobby of the hotel Royal Tulip with credentials of a congress of osteoporosis which the custodian has no idea. Are they really doctors or are following Greenwald? Appearances are deceptive.

- Does Snowden's decision to stay in Russia while achieving come to Latin America?

-Yes, the most important thing is not to end in U.S. custody, which proved extremely vindictive government to punish those who reveal uncomfortable truths, and in whose judicial system can not be trusted when it comes to people accused of endangering the national security, the judges do everything they can to secure convictions in these cases. It would be immediately put in prison to cover the debate that helped generate, and end the rest of his days behind bars.

- Russia gives security guarantees?

-Not many countries in the world that have the ability and willingness to defy U.S. demands. But Russia is one of those countries and it has been good so far.

- Beyond the revelations about the spying system performance in general, what extra information has Snowden?

-Snowden has enough information to cause more damage to the U.S. government in a minute alone than anyone else has ever had in the history of the United States. But that's not his goal. Its objective is to expose software that people around the world use without knowing what they are exposing themselves without consciously agreeing to surrender their rights to privacy. It has a huge number of documents that would be very harmful to the U.S. government if they were made public.

- Are you afraid that someone will try to kill him?

It's a possibility, although I do not bring many benefits to anyone at this point. Already distributed thousands of documents and made sure that several people around the world have their entire file. If something were to happen, those documents would be made public. This is your insurance policy. The U.S. government should be on your knees every day praying that nothing happens to Snowden, because if something happens, all information will be revealed and that would be their worst nightmare.

- Can Latin America be a good shelter for Snowden?

-Only a few countries, including several in Latin America, China and Russia, have challenged the U.S., have realized that America is no longer in a position of strength as it did before with the rest of the world, and that the rest of the countries do not have to obey their demands as if it were an imperial order. In Latin America feels a natural sympathy for the United States, yet there is a great resentment for specific historical policies of Washington toward the region. What happened to the plane of Evo Morales in Europe caused a strong reaction, was treated as if Bolivia was a colony and not a sovereign state.

-From Snowden shared documents with you, there is much more information related to Latin America?

Yes For each country that has an advanced communications system, such as from Mexico to Argentina, there are documents that detail how the United States collects the traffic information, the programs that are used to capture the transmissions, the number of interceptions are performed per day, and more. One way to intercept communications is through a telephone corporation in the United States that has contracts with telecommunications companies in most Latin American countries. The important thing will be to see what the reaction of the various governments. I do not think that the governments of Mexico and Colombia do much about it. But maybe those of Argentina and Venezuela itself willing to take action.

I'm starting to wonder if he has accepted his own death and that the info will come out. He is simply trying to build his case in the public's eye before he does so his death is not just another page 14 story that people forget in a week.

He knew when he first exposed/confirmed it he would be a marked man for the rest of his life.

This is how martyrs and patriots are born...the only question now is how many will join him in mutually pledging to each other their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor.

If the US is engaged in such heinous acts that their release is its worst nightmare, Greenwald owes it to the citizens of the world to release it before the NSA terminates all the possible leakers.

What are they waiting for?  An offer from the NSA they cannot refuse?

I am baffled by the logic (lack?) in this unfolding scenario ...

Snowden's stated position - as per Greenwald - is that he possesses info of an extremely bad nature for the govt.  THEREFORE ...

1) Leave him the fuck alone for the next 50 years and we can all just kinda leave these past several weeks' activities to sorta settle down.

OR

2) Leave him the fuck alone for the next 50 years so he can disseminate what he wants/when he wants.

If anyone thinks this band of butchers, with a demonstrated history of slaughtering innocents, will pee their collective pants for the next several decades, they are nuts.

This doesn't make sense to me why Snowden seems to be seeking lifelong insurance in this affair that he has created.

Snowden has a deal with Putin to release no more information in return for his (temporary) amnesty in Russia while he figures out his next move/home.

Of course he will:

1- honor his agreement with Putin in return for his guest/temporary amnesty

and

2- hold his Ace cards in reserve

The guy is playing with fire for the 1st time in his life and playing it cautiously with many untrusteds/unknowns, and his life is at stake.

I think once he lands in SA somewhere, and he believes he's somewhat safe, more info will come out.

Patience lads.

If the description of this documentary doesn't sound like the NSA and guantanimo, I don't know what does.

Cloaked away in cellars and top floors were the listening rooms filled with, what at that time was cutting edge, recording equipment. German prisoners of war were brought to the UK and interrogated. If they were suspicious of having important intelligence the prisoners were then sent to bugged locations where listeners were ready and waiting for them to start talking.

No guess here.

My first thought, last night, after reading the article (posted somewhere else, before this website picked it up) was EXACTLY that.

If they arrest him, they're gonna have him CRUCIFIED. History replays, as always.

A 'Secret Court' will have a 'Secret Rendition' order issued, and 'In Secret', they will take him to a place, perhaps in Belarus, where they will 'Extract Information' from him, before he DIES, HORRIBLY.

Meanwhile, the plebes in 'merikuh will tune in to FAUX, to catch the latest 'STUPIFICATION BOWL' scores, safely kept safe by the TSA and the DHS. Of course, a 'select few' will have their vaginas and anuses fingered, in the name of 'SECURITY', but most will thank their god of govenment that 'merikuh' is 'safe, once again', and discount any torture done 'in their name'. blissfully ignorant of their guilt, and accepting the 'official story' as told by HANNITY about the HERO BUSH and 9/11, propogated by Obama and HIS people.

The Sparks Of the tempest rage, one hundred years on.

There's also the very real issue of "timing".

If Snowden still has some explosive revelations about massive issues (eg 9/11), they will lose impact if he holds onto them for a long time, as insurance.

Delay is a tactic very well known by TPTB to get subjects off the news agenda and washed away. UK governments use delay extensively for this purpose. And this is why they seal a lot of documents for up to 70 years.

EG: if in ~2020 somebody produced evidence that Princess Di's Mercedes was actually the subject of an MI6 "Boston Brakes" murder, it would not have the impact necessary to bring down any government.

I'm thinking Snowden has to reveal explosive stuff within one year for maximum impact.

Winston,

Let's narrow this down a little.

Edward Snowden stood up. HE cared. He cares about you, and about me, and as such, he is revered in MY eyes.

I CARE. I CARE about YOU, and everyone else on this planet who are awakened, or who COULD be awakened.

YOU care. Obviously, you care, because you take the time to post comments on Zero Hedge'.

The TYLERS care, due to the fact that they not only post this information, but allow YOU and ME to POST comments regarding the REAL news.

Anyone who posts here cares, in either more or lesser ways.

SIX BILLION PLUS PEOPLE have a stake in what is about to happen, or IS happening. Wether or not they 'care' is not a salient subject for debate. Perhaps they simply DO NOT KNOW about what is happening. It is OUR job to EDUCATE them; DESPITE the insurmountable 'bad news' that assails us ALL.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE, Winston Smith. KNOW THIS.

Ex head of NSA; "the public will just have to trust us". As if, you dirty big fuck... why don’t you trust us more to the point? The danger in all of this is when and if the storm blows over. As soon as these demented animals start to comprehend what they can get away with when considering public stupidity, when they realise that public anger and a global press frenzy can be managed with a just a few chosen lines of obfuscation and spin on the right networks, its Orwell time.

That’s why i worry about public forums where people can vent their anger; usually public anger should be left to simmer and boil, that’s the best way, that’s when its at its most cutting. These days, things have took a much more sinister turn. Its the classic tactic of the corporate's, they all say "we welcome public debate", when what they really welcome is the chance to control debate...what they really welcome is fucking up the public debate so much so, that no one actually cares about the matter any more. Beware of corporate’s welcoming debate! This is the danger, you have a load of PR doormats applying their methods and not seeing the wood for the trees.

And of course they can get away with it, as i have always said, the media is riddled with these doormats from all corners of the establishment, from intelligence to politics. It always has been. They'll take more and more, until the only way out for us is to be insanely brutal.

And given that EVERY politician in D.C. is dirty, as well as their owners on Wall Street--goes without saying--I wonder just how many layers the Snowden onion has; i.e., did he collect individual dirt on such stellar supporters of the Constitution like Obama and Holder? And, of course, that--having that specific dirt--couldn't be a public bargaining point, for all the obvious reasons. But I'm betting some of the inner layers of this onion could end the political lives of quite a few of the greatest threats to freedom--if not end THEM...

Off topic but interesting aside to the Boston Marathon bombing. See article for twitter pic.

http://commonsenseconspiracy.com/2013/07/saudi-national-suspect-in-bosto...

Remember our report about after the Boston Marathon Bombings, Michelle Obama visited a Saudi national in the hospital who was originally fingered as a “person of interest” in the aftermath of the attacks?  Well, a lot of people were intrigued by our First Lady visiting Abdul Rahman Ali Aharbi, and the conspiracy theories were blazing.  We took a somewhat critical approach to that at first.  After all, the First Lady didn’t visit this guy specifically.  She was visiting victims in the hospital, and this guy was one of them at the time.  Whether or not she knew his status as a suspect or just was being supportive of everyone that she could is something we couldn’t possibly uncover.  However, this latest news does make us wonder if we might have did the wrong thing when we at least halfway defended her.

It is now being passed around the Internet that Aharbi has been spotted at the White House during their July 4th party for military heroes and their families.  The source of a lot of this is actually from Arabic sites.  It seems that they are as put off by the idea of this fellow turning up at the White House as we are.  Anyway, what do you think?  We’ve posted a photograph below from the White House party and then the picture of Aharbi from the hospital.  Do you think these are one and the same?  And what possible reason could Aharbi have for turning up in close proximity to the First Lady and our President once again?

This is the same kid who flagged as terrorist in the Homeland Security databases and the designation was removed right after Michelle visited him in the hospital that morning.

The bigger problem is that the bulk of the US citizenry remain ignorantly catatonic and therefore unable to regain control of their country and their individual futures.

It will be interesting to see how many Snowdens and Mannings it takes to reverse the moral decay of US governments.

Until then who knows how many packets of Doritos and cans of coke the US sheeple will consume.

What about the alleged Israeli strike on July 5th on the Syrian port which challenges assad to make good on his promise to retaliate? What did putin tell netanyahu after the Israelis launched their last strike? Also why did put just call a massive snap drill in eastern Russia and just annouced he is expanding it? Last week large china and Russia joint naval manuevers took place. Recall the last time there were rumors about nato strikes inside Syria putin called black sea snap exercises.....

“The total number of servicemen involved in the snap drills was up to 81,000 last night, the figure this morning was up to 160,000 servicemen,” Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said. The exercises also involve about 1,000 tanks and armored vehicles, 130 aircraft and 70 warships from the Pacific Fleet, Shoigu confirmed. These latter figures remain unchanged.

I'd like to see a lot less stories about Mr. Snowden and a lot more about exactly what the US Government is doing in regard to spying on American citizens. I'd also like to know why so much of this kind of work is being contracted out to private companies. To me, this is a much more important story, and the reason that Snowden took the action he did - to generate debate about the policies and actions of our government. Rather than empty assurances that everything is legal, or that it's all classified information, I think that we deserve honest information on this issue.

    The back story is this.

EVERY SINGLE electronic transmission is captured and stored.  Every traffic camera's film is stored.  Every single doctor discussion, business transaction thru every single electronic transmission is captured and stored on disc.

Background programs run endlessly, building cross referencing keys.  Correlating and accumulating all information.

To the point where the Kremlin has just purchased typewriters for very important communication.

not only is this doable and being done but it has been doable and been done for a LONG time now. (probably more like decades actually.) what is different now is the predictive power of such "aggregations." in other words once i can discern saliency in human action there really is not limit to the efficacy of said program. this would include EVEN THE PROGRAM BEING KNOWN AND BEING DONE IN FULL VIEW OF THE PUBLIC. there is something to be said for all this stuff "coming to light" not being an accident...but in my view it has to do with just how good this thing is. "so good knowing about really doesn't matter." obviously it cannot ever be turned off...nor will it be. "this is you REAL committee to save the world."

The ownership power leveraged over every politician using the NSA's spying is all bust if all that material, and the way it was collected, is revealed.

That means every blackmail is open and every technique is open, meaning you can't use secret leverage over existing assets hoping for votes instead of jail AND you can't summon NEW assets because anyone with something to hide that they now know can not be hidden will REFUSE TO STEP UP to be a pawn.

I am  thinking of developing a "spook" virus.  Any communications intercepted by other than the intended recipient will activate the virus and cause havoc, including hardware failures.

If this works, it will protect Fourth Ammendment rights and hopefully screw up that Utah data center and any other entity that attempts to take information that is clearly not theirs to take.

If they are truly concerned about National Security, they had better stop this data collection before it is too late and their snooping captures a virus they cannot control.

Nice thought by any clear-text segments which are clearly non-executable can be filtered out so that nothing happens - it's pure data, never is used as a script or program, and for that matter, anything handled is not executable even IF someone tried to do so. This can be performed at the server level as email is incoming & similar measures for just about anything out there, be it computer or phone.

It certainly would fail incoming to my computer: email is not executed, it's always used code-free as raw text. Nothing you can do on your end to cause that to change on my end.

From the 7/12/13 article by the Golden Jackass, the all-knowing Dr. Jim Willie:

"The young man Snowden operates as the front man stage hand in a global chess game of espionage, terrorism, embassy abuse, financial subterfuge, financial shenanigans, and much more to come. He is a kid, not a big player. He is put forward as a pawn chess piece, with heavyweight supporters. The key is knowing that 50 back doors remain open, available, with regular passage in the next few months in the vast US security databases. What will be revealed is a cornucopia of vile slimy vicious American and British directives, movements, attacks, and projects that can no longer be kept hidden behind the curtains. A vast conflict has emerged in the United States between psychopathic bad spooks and good security professionals, simply put. The lid is off. The fur will fly. The US & UK will be on the extreme defensive for nasty revealed deeds for some time to come, as stories are pried out and leaked on a systematic basis. The presentation of Snowden as a key veteran knowledgeable player is highly amusing. He is a kid whose career resume is almost as sketchy as the leader of the US land."

I think that nails it right there.  For a whole host of reasons, Ed Snowden simply could NOT accomplish what he has by his lonesome. Upstream sanction HAD to be involved.  Simultaneously, the info put is demonstrably damaging to many govt. interests. (BTW, lottsa people exiting the DC scene these past few weeks, no?).  For years, NSA guys like Tice and Binney have been trying to get the word out to little avail.

A big concern to me is that this is very heavyweight stuff that is far from concluded ... with no guarantee the "good guys" will prevail.

I think you're missing the point. That's HOW they bought the elections. You're focusing on who did the BUYING as important rather than who was PAID FOR which is the NSA. It's cheaper to blackmail them using espionage than to make blind money offers - after all, you can't cap the bribe limit if you don't have leverage. If you have NSA material you have leverage. Now you need only balance the bribery between "opposing parties" while keeping a solid cap on what they can ask for, vs what the politicians will do on command.

Al Sharpcon says he is coming within range.  Keep your powder dry.  Sight your rifles in at 300 yards and saw - off your 12 guage.

It is your opportunity to correct an oversight made by Planned Parenthood some years ago. Clean the air.  Save oxygen.  Exterminate the race-baiter.

FYI:  Watch for the commie Jessup Jackmouth to come your way soon.  He can't let another progressive jihadist take credit for the next feral black rioting.

You can also expect Obowel Movement and Holder The Horrible to send an army of lawyers your way to try to fabricate a federal case against George Zimmerman for having the temerity to fight back and kill the feral black thug who was beating the hell out of him.

Finally Al has found another tawana Brawley. Sharpton has no credibility  -I do look forward to hearing what Louis Farrakhan has to say on the matter. He is clearly not fooled by zionist divide and conquer racist practices of the elites and their whore media - I'm not sure if he will rise above the bullshit and say what is right here  -I beleive he will take a reasonable stand. we'll see.

Does Al have some type of "red phone" to "preachers" in order to mobilize them in on a moments notice.  Or perhaps it's some type of "Bat Signal" that he shines up in the sky and it's off to the "bat cave" for planning.

The CIA is watching and listening to Ed right now.

Magal Security Systems can do the job that needs to be done.

Ed should apply for asylum to Siberia.

If any of Ed's info affects the Moxxad and their bosses, neither Snowden nor Greenwald will release it.

You can be sure that they already had a "Come to Moses" meeting with Greenwald. No offense -- just realistic.

We have a neighbor who disapproves of Snowdon.  He thinks that he should have taken the information to a sympathetic congressman, LOL.  He thinks he is a confused young man.  Of course, this neighbor thinks that any and all amount of surveillance of citizens by the government is fine, if it "saves a single life from terrorism."  Naturally he is in favor of the legality of late term abortion; after all, the consitutional right to privacy is important(!)

Anyway, where he and I actually agree:  In some countries, e.g. England, you might be able to have  a small, efficient, intelligence program, run on a budget, by people with love of country, who are committed to secrecy.  Something along the lines of Enigma.  Here in the U.S., we have an enormous, bloated, incompetent, corrupt, wasteful, costly spying program run by imbeciles, that can't keep some mid level dweeb from walking out with the jewels of the realm.

Really, if the NSA is this incompetent, I presume that our enemies already have any info that they want from us.

Of course, we are also the cretins who buy stuff that our military uses, from China.

There are only a handful of Congressmen you could trust with such information, and even with those who can be trusted, it would be useless. The media would not print it , it would be marginalized, discredited and the congreman whistleblower would end up in jail like Jim Trafficante  -or dead. Congres has no power - 95% are bought and sold - those who aren't are powerless to do their jobs right. Thats reality. If you think otherwise, you are naive and foolish.

That's what I told him.  He doesn't believe me.  He really believes that the congressman would do the right thing.  Naive, I guess.

BTW, I should clarify:  I don't WANT the U.S. to have some small, efficient and competent system for spying on our citizens.  I don't want us to have *any* spying on citizens.  But even if it were a good thing (it's not), what a country like the U.S. ends up with is a bloated POS system like the NSA.  Also to clarify, I admire Snowden.  He is a *heroic* mid-level dweeb.

funny how the "intelligence" agencies have to operate outside the law to "protect" people in this country? the base preise is that you have to act and use the same resources available to criminals here and overseas.

bourne and 007 break any law in any country that they see fit in order to get the bad guys. what we don't see in the "hollywood" intelligence communityportrayals is the impact on families and communities over subsequent years and decades of the "instant gratification" of superspies, that is, collateral damage on neighborhood psyches.

i use novels by john le carre or robert ludlum to get somewhat more of a balanced perspective when cussler or clancy get too much.

parasites are not symbiotic - they have nothing in their means for self-preservation including host-preservation.

Fraud is symbiotic. A fraudulent layer to a system, or parts, knows inherently it can't exist without LEGITIMATE commerce. It can only live in the shadows so something legitimate MUST cast that shadow.

Banksters are tyrants and robbers, not mere fraudsters - they have no symbiosis.

It is quite peculiar that a lot of folks here don't realize that Snowden just like Assange is an intel asset. Releasing biased worthless junk intel to gain credibility with the "think different" anti authority crowd who are incapable of the elementary critical thought just like the rest of the sheep they like to criticize so much. Follow the leader.

I think the evidence is clear. I use a little bit different metric than the average dullard on this site. I stick with the obvious, right under your nose. Since we all know the MSN is totally co-opted, then their obvious interest in keeping Snowden's name in the news would tell you it is in the controllers interest. If they perceived his knowledge as a threat, he would be out of the news completely until he could be eliminated. We are dealing with rabbit holes, so question everything you know and how you know it.

MSM would be amiss if they were not reporting on a story that RT TV and the internet were focused entirely on.  However, I have noticed Comcast has removed RT TV from the lineup.  On check, it has happened in Colorado, broadcasting 11 AM to 3 PM only.  I am still searching the internet to see where this has been happening.  July 5 was when Calif's Comcast removed it.  Same as Colorado's RTTV time slot being shrunken to 4 hours (in the middle of the day).

He said, he greatest fear was "everything would stay the same, that nothing would happen."  Well, I think he is sincere personally.  He was described as a deep thinker.  He spoke of his revulsion to the tactics being applied as far back as 2007.  Letting the world know everything they've ever said or typed through telecommunications is now in the hands of authorities is earth shattering news.  Having us find out this way, so LE can produce the information when we are stopped for sliding through a right-on-red is doubtful.  This is to determine who exactly we are, where we have been so they will decide where we should go.

I think I've clearly addressed this last week.

The MSM loses all credibility if Greenwald & a few other "blogs" run the story. People tune out for good.

The MSM can't afford that. They must keep eyes on their propaganda which means they must mention Snowden regularly just not AS regularly, or fervently, except as a "traitor", compared to Greenwald.

The instant Greenwald is made silent the MSM will move on too.

That bodes poorly for the continued health of Hastings (cough, cough) I mean Greenwald.
