The Public Responds To Zimmerman Verdict

Tyler Durden's picture

A jury of six women found neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman not guilty of all charges on Saturday in the shooting of Trayvon Martin. Here are some quotes from key figures involved in the case. From the AP:

"We're ecstatic with the results. George Zimmerman was never guilty of anything except protecting himself in self-defense."

      — Mark O'Mara, one of George Zimmerman's attorneys, said at a news conference after the verdict.

"Even though I am broken hearted my faith is unshattered. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE MY BABY TRAY"

      — Trayvon Martin's father, Tracy Martin, via Twitter

"The acquittal of George Zimmerman is a slap in the face to the American people but it is only the first round in the pursuit of justice. We intend to ask the Department of Justice to move forward as they did in the Rodney King case and we will closely monitor the civil case against Mr. Zimmerman. I will convene an emergency call with preachers tonight to discuss next steps and I intend to head to Florida in the next few days."

      — the Rev. Al Sharpton

"Message from Dad: "Our whole family is relieved". Today... I'm proud to be an American. God Bless America! Thank you for your prayers!

      — George Zimmerman's brother, Robert, said in Twitter

"I don't think this is a time for high-fiving."

     — Robert Zimmerman Jr., George's brother, on CNN after the verdict.

The jury avoided the inclusion of emotional response.  They did the absolute correct thing.

Zimmerman is not the aggressor.  If I follow you down the street on a dark night for 5 blocks, are you allowed to suddenly turn around and attack me?  No.  Martin didn't deserve to be followed, nor did he deserve to be killed.  But had he NOT been killed, he'd have faced assault and battery charges.

Where, in that equation, is Zimmerman a criminal?

He's allowed to carry a gun.  He's allowed to use it to defend himself.  He was attacked, and the claim "he provoked it" is not an excuse to label him a criminal except in the most confused of minds.

Come follow me for 5 blocks.  It's annoying as hell, but I'm not going to attack you.  It's worth noting Martin confronted Zimmerman, not vice versa.  But in your mind, which knows less about the law and even less about what actually happened, you can create whatever 'facts' you'd like and claim them to be the truth.  Since we can only work with the information which is available, the evidence is such that Zimmerman made a bad and stupid choice to follow Martin, and that led to tragic results.  This is unfortunate, but is not criminal.

Just because emotionally you believe it to be so does not make it so.  Emotions are misleading and lie to us.

zimmerman stalks martin.  they get in a fight.  apparently zimmerman is in a losing position and draws his gun to defend himself.  he is not a trained cop with a badge. he is told to stand down by the 911 operator. there is NO crime being committed by martin. zimmerman shot and killed an innocent man because he was losing a fight which he instigated.  cops get away with this all the time.  now, apparently can vigilantes.

Yes, cops see a pick-up truck that might look similar to a blue truck they want, so they just open fire on it.  No matter it was the wrong color and was driven by two asian ladies.   Cops see someone holding a water hose nozzle and think it might be a gun so they shoot him.   Cops try to enter my yard and the family dog begins barking at them so they shoot the dog in cold blood...  I say carrying a deadly weapon requires the owner to take special responsibility.  Unfortunitly, it seems the law & the majority of the voters here on ZH don't agree.

Thorvald Thorvaldson killed a farmer in Norway.  Thorvald was shipped off to Iceland.  Eric the Red was born because Thorvald continued to live even after he had committed a homicide.  Thorvald was given another chance, not prison.

Eric the Red, a young farmer in Iceland, loaned a shovel to a neighboring farmer.  When Eric asked the farmer to return the shovel, the farmer refused.  Eric wrestled the shovel from the farmer, hit him over the head with it and the farmer died.

Eric the Red was forced to set to sea, ended up in Greenland and built a good farm there.  Greenland was a much warmer place in 1000 CE and was said to be warmer than Norway at the time.

Greenland was discovered because Thorvald Thorvaldson killed another farmer.

Probably time for beer.

Might be good and better to raise tolerances instead of foment discord.

I'm neither happy nor unhappy with the verdict.

Zimmerman isn't a racist (1/4 black) nor is he a criminal.  He just fucked up, pure and simple.  The law doesn't allow him to pursue anyone, but it doesn't allow anyone to take a swing at anyone who is following you.

Martin didn't deserve to die, but that's not what the trial was about.  The trial was about whether nor not he killed Martin in cold blood, and that is almost definitely NOT what happened, except when you inject emotion into the equation.

A tragic event which, thankfully for the jury's verdict, avoided further tragic consequences.  Two wrongs don't make a right.

That's not true.  There is no law in Florida that says you can not follow somebody in public.  It's not a crime to follow someone.  Omara talked at length about that in his final argument.  It made perfectly good sense for Zimmerman(a neighborhood watchman) to follow a strange person in his crime ridden neighborhood to see what they were doing and to inform the police.  Trayvon had plenty of time to get home.  Trayvon didn't call the police.  Trayvon decided to go "worldstar" on that creepy ass cracker and unfortunately lost his life.  Mabye this incident will save future lives.   People will think twice about fighting.  The other person just might have a gun.

I hope they indict that special prosecutor.  The State did everything they could to try to put an innocent man in jail for 20 years or more for only political reasons.  It's shameful.  Just like that poor youtube video guy that's in jail because of Obama's and Hillary's Benghazi debacle.  This country doesn't need more political prisoners.  Thanks to the jury,  we're not a full blown banana republic yet.

African Americans shoot other African Americans at such a high rate, and so many African Americans are in prison, that it appears incomprehensible to the "community" of activists that there were facts or law involved in this case.

Incomprehensible that Zimmerman was not convicted, even if Trayvon had broken his nose, and was on top of him beating his head into the curb ... that Trayvon had transgressed anything.

There is something nobody else seems to have mentioned, i.e. who is crazy enough to charge a guy with a gun? Nobody I know or have ever known.

And who is crazy enough to attack another person when they know the other person may have a gun on them?

Point is Zimmerman was not holding Trayvon at gunpoint or threatening him with the gun when the fight happened.

Point is that Zimmerman is and was a soft, noodle armed chump. Wouldn't it have crossed his mind that getting close enough to wrastle, punch or grab Trayvon would put him in more danger than keeping his distance?Trayvon could have grabbed the gun and turned it on him at any point if he got the upper hand. That's a big chance to take.

Zimmerman was a wannabe cop, yeah, but even a wannabe cop knows better than to let a potentially violent "suspect" come within arm's length of their piece without drawing down and ordering them to raise their hands.

He didn't have cuffs, he was on his own, in the dark. is this guy that brave or that dumb? Maybe the latter by definitely not the former.

The pro-Trayvon narrative (entirely speculative) just doesn't jive. Whatever happened, whatever words were said, I think the evidence points clearly to the fact that Trayvon attacked Zimmerman and beat his ass, which resulted in Zimmerman going for his gun, Trayvon seeing that and going for it too and then BANG. Legally, that is self defense.

Tueller

Sun, 07/14/2013 - 13:13 | 3751613 mrbadexample
mrbadexample's picture

So I googled "Tueller", as in "Tueller Drill" but not sure what you mean to imply? That Zimmerman was luring Trayvon in so he could shoot him down? Or something else? There is eye witness testimony that the two men were on the ground fighting, that is undisputed, and the witness stated that he strongly believed it was Zimmerman on the bottom getting the worst of it (evidence supports this too). So even if Zimmerman had the "Tueller Drill" in mind why would he have let Trayvon get close enough to grapple with him? To make sure he got away with it? Sure, possible, but it's still a huge risk to take, and not just with the law, but his own life.

Even if you leave off all the injury evidence (some of it could be self inflicted after all) why would Zimmerman give Trayvon the chance to take his piece? Only one shot was fired. The two were clearly inches away when the shot was fired so we're back to my original question. If Zimmerman pulled the piece moments before Trayvon grabbed him (very risky since he was a fat, weak POS) then how come he didn't shoot him then? Are you saying he waited and wrestled with Trayvon, maybe let him hit him a little and then shot him? It's possible but that would be a flat out psychotic, mephistolean plan executed on the spot and with tremendous presence of mind and self control. The wild speculation that Zimmerman is in fact Hannibal Lecter has been bandied about a little but I think it's more fantasy than anything else.

Sun, 07/14/2013 - 13:50 | 3751707 Uncle Remus

My point, in part, was an apparent lack of knowledge on Zimmerman's part on how fast an attacker can close.

Until Zimmerman's head was being pounded on the sidewalk, I don't see lethal force as a justifiable response, but I know nothing really of the case. Taser perhaps, but not familiar with FL law.

"very risky since he was a fat, weak POS" I would urge caution in letting your prejudices or preconceptions color your objectivity, especially in life or death situations. It will be seen and used against you, I guarantee it. After all, it is Zimmerman who is still alive.

Sun, 07/14/2013 - 15:40 | 3752023 mrbadexample
mrbadexample's picture

OK, point taken, but I think what he did was both stupid and sh*tty, Trayvon didn't deserve to die, even if he instigated a fight. Hence "POS". Having said that, I support the legal verdict on both counts, given the evidence it was the only one they could have come to if they followed the law. As for Zimmerman being "fat and weak" that is not my opinion, but the opinion of one of the witnesses who testified in court. He was the owner of a gym where Zimmerman trained and his opinion was that Zimmerman was "fat and weak", mostly blubber, no muscle and not much of a fighter... and that was BEFORE he put on all the extra weight he was wearing at the trial. I can't quote him verbatim but I think I remember him (the witness) testifying that they were afraid to let him shadow box because the shadow might win... or something to that effect.

So few here {if any} really understand what this was all about. Someone said something yesterday that sums this whole thing up rather well:"If only Zimmerman had used his mother's maiden name, we would have never even heard about this event. In Chicago, black/black shootings, and black/hispanic shootings happen about ten times a day, every day. But because Zimmerman was classified and reported as white early on in the media coverage, it became what it is today. This whole story was created to serve some purpose". BINGO! Someone give that man a cigar. Now, what that purpose could be, you will get diffferant opinions. Make no mistake, the gubmint WANTS RIOTS. The bigger, bloodier and widespread the better.
