Assad Army Discovers Syrian Rebels' Chemical Weapons Cache

Tyler Durden's picture

While it has become difficult to distinguish fact from fiction from mere propaganda when it comes to events in Syria, the general plot line is a simple one: "X/Y has chemical weapons so the ["free and democratic world"|Russia] has the moral authority to provide military assistance to Y/X."

Recently, it was the "free and democratic world" that decided that the general public has forgotten the epic Iraq WMD disinformation campaign, and ploughed into a decision to arm the Syrian rebels who are really nothing more than Qatar-funded mercenaries led by Al Qaeda, as it was finally ascertained (by someone, unclear who) that it was the Assad regime that had used chemical weapons.

Well, the "free and democratic world" may have some serious 'splaining to do if the latest news out of Syria is confirmed, namely that the the Syrian army has discovered rebels' storehouse in the Damascus area, where toxic chemical substances, including chlorine, have been produced and kept, State TV reported.

From RT:

Military sources reported that the militants "were preparing to fire mortars in the suburbs of the capital and were going to pack missiles with chemical warheads."

On July 7, the Syrian army confiscated “281 barrels filled with dangerous, hazardous chemical materials” that they found also found at a cache belonging to rebels in the city of Banias. The chemicals included monoethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol.

Syrian UN Ambassador Bashar Ja’afari said that the chemicals were “capable of destroying a whole city, if not the whole country."

On Monday chief UN chemical weapons investigator Ake Sellstrom and UN disarmament chief Angela Kane are expected in Damascus for talks following a Syrian government invitation.

Oh well, back to the propaganda drawing board. Only this time, now that the Zimmerman case is over, the public will quickly need some other major distraction to keep it occupied while the secondary propaganda track plays in the background.

More importantly, now that the Syrian rebels have "crossed the red line", we look forward to shipments of US weapons being UPS'ed (someone has to boost the imploding logistics company top line) to the rebels and the Assad regime at the same time. Hence: double the GDP boost.

Does this make them part of the Axis of Evil, or does this imply that nuke creation is ok as long as their intended target is anyone other than Israel?  I'm being sarcastic of course, but it sure feels like that is the true definition of 'Axis of Evil'.

This is about tightening the noose around Iran, and keeping Russia out of the ME. Destroy the city and infrastructure  oust the leader then loan the new puppet government money which they know they will have trouble repaying. The new regime will enrich itself and do whatever is neccessary to keep their position and wealth. Part of the conditions for loaning that money is that they award major contracts to multinationals to rebuild their country. The country will have a booming economy until the money can't be repaid, then comes loan restructuring with conditions that they privatize nationally owned companies and resources. Maybe even a U.S. military base will be included. Sound familiar. Iraq, Afganistan, Libya ect..  No wonder Iran wants a nuclear weapon. Same old game.

Assad has no need of chemical weapons in this war.  His troops are winning with conventional weapons.  Chemical weapons have no use against infiltrator/mercenaries who infiltrate civilian areas, as opposed to massed troops.   In short, WMD is a total red herring used by the war mongers to justify invasions.  nothing more.

I don't think either side has any really serious chemicals (that weren't supplied) and the whole issue is just to inflame both sides in order to foment WWIII.

Shame on you. Something is not safe unless the government says it is safe. Everything you own or use must have a government stamp of approval. The government stamp makes it safe. I suppose you think people should be able to choose all by themselves what baby wipes to use? People can't be trusted with that responsibity. They pay taxes to be told what is safe. For example, marijuana is not safe because the government does not approve. The government is looking out for your safety.

Fuller account

The industrial chemicals were listed as 79 barrels of polyethylene glycol (PEG), 67 barrels of mono ethylene glycol, 25 barrels of mono ethanol (or ethanolamine) and 68 barrels of diethanolamine (DEA) and 42 barrels of triethanolamine (TEA).

The diethanolamine and triethanolamine are schedule 3 substances under the chemical weapons convention: they can be used, with some work, as precursors to chemical weapons, but are widely used for legitimate and peaceful purposes (they're probably in your shampoo and shaving cream).  PEG and monethylene glycol are, most likely, in your house somewhere, either in your cosmetics, in your medicines, or in your automobile.

Likewise, that they produced chlorine there isn't that big a deal.  Chlorine has lots of uses.  It's in your swimming pool.

The chemicals alone won't identify this as a chemical weapons plant unless someone comes up with some schedule 1 substances or something other than common precursors.

Those chemicals they found are... anti-freeze and DNA substrate.  The rebels are going to.... cool their vehicles and make their own medicine.

If you check out the MSDS for both these chemicals, you find the PEG is nearly non-hazardous while MEG is rather toxic, but not in comparison to "traditional" chemical warfare compounds.  Why al CIAda would want a depot of them does require a bit more explanation, including what the other compounds were that were discovered in these depots.

Easiest way for the rebels and Al-Quaida to get weapons and aid from the US no less, is for them to wipe out a town if civilians using these kinds of weapons - and blame it on their government.

Ziad Fadel on his blog:

" I just got off the phone with a friend in Latakia.  He says no attack on any military base or arsenal took place in rural Latakia.  He also says that Syria does not store its missiles in warehouses just so the Zionists can simply bomb them.  Our missiles. Yakhonts, S-300s and Scuds are hidden underground or in caves along the coast of Syria.  The entire story is bound to be exposed soon.  Interestingly, the only sources publishing anything about this are the "usual suspects" or the "usual gang of idiots": Reuters, AP and the NYT.  Needless to say, all sources quoted are "anonymous".  What a joke.

This may be the case.

The only picture I have seen of the purported 'target' was on an RT page, an image of a, empty concrete building with the walls blown out, and the rebar exposed in the supports, which were still standing. So zero walls.

For certain if that building had contained 50 very large heavy-missiles, then that building would not be standing at all, and the evidence of the contents would be scattered everywhere.

But the building appeared to have been completely empty at the time of the explosion.

Plus there was no way to know if it was an old image, of some other event, so I'm a bit suspicious of it as well.

Evidently the Syrians and the Russians failed to detect the origins of the attacking missiles so they had no conclusive proof pointing to the Israelis – until this leak from US officials, which demonstrates the desperation of the Anglo-American oligarchy to ignite a full scale war between Israel and Syria as a last resort to save their crumbling destabilization plan in that country. It remains to be seen if Assad and Putin will risk falling in that trap or focus instead on defeating the remains of the FSA in Northern Syria, thereby gaining the upper hand in the civil war. Big fucking whoop.

How about this alternative headline:

"Assad Finds Million Dollars U.S. in Couch"

There's better script writing than this on cable access channels.
