The Day After: Widespread Angry Protests, Tactical Alerts, Some Vandalism, No Major Riots
Despite the worst fears of many that this morning America might wake up to a redux of a flaming Compton and Watts, so far there have been no widespread riots or looting, even if vandalism has broken out sporadically among the countrywide angry protests.
From AFP: "Americans angry at the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of black teen Trayvon Martin marched in US cities throughout Saturday night, with reports of sporadic acts of violence. Spontaneous marches of varying sizes erupted in cities including San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, Atlanta and Philadelphia.
Prominent rights activists like Jesse Jackson appealed for calm. "Avoid violence, it will lead to more tragedies. Find a way for self construction not deconstruction in this time of despair," he wrote on Twitter. Martin's parents have long called for non-violent demonstrations, quoting civil rights icon Martin Luther King and the Bible. Several hundred demonstrators marched peacefully amid a heavy police presence in downtown San Francisco soon after the verdict.
Many carried signs with slogans such as "The people say guilty." Hours later angry protesters marching through Oakland -- just across the bay from San Francisco -- spray-painted cars and smashed windows, helicopter video footage posted by the Oakland Tribune showed. One vandalized vehicle was a police cruiser."
The LAPD declared a citywide tactical alert overnight due to concerns of a Rodney King repeat:
The LAPD has declared a citywide tactical alert amid a protest in Leimert Park sparked by the George Zimmerman not-guilty verdict in Florida on Saturday night.
The alert initially applied only to the agency's South Bureau -- but it was expanded to include the entire city, a LAPD sergeant said. In a tactical alert, officers can be held over after their regular shifts and do not have to respond to low-priority radio calls.
LAPD Sgt. Carlton Brown said the decision was made as a precaution amid the controversial verdict. He said there have been no reports of problems at the demonstration in Leimert Park.
"We think it's going to remain that way," he said.
Brown said he heard the crowd grew to some 200 but was now starting to dissipate.
Twitter users were posting about the demonstration Saturday night in the historically black neighborhood.
"Just drove thru Leimert Park, they're having an extremely peaceful rally." wrote user @dj_RTistic. "News vans are out and a few Black cops are there to patrol it"
Elsewhere, around the country:
In Chicago, to the cry of "No justice, no peace! No racist police!" a crowd of activists held a noisy downtown rally, the Chicago Tribune reported, while protesters gathered at Times Square in New York City to vent their anger.
In Washington, dozens of mostly African-American youths marched chanting slogans in a city neighborhood. They were followed closely by patrol vehicles, an AFP journalist reported.
A crowd of several hundred gathered all day Saturday outside the courthouse in Sanford, Florida -- and many were outraged when the verdict was read.
"It's the end of our justice system," said Ashton Summer, a 20 year-old Puerto Rican. "Justice is not equal for everyone."
The ANSWER coalition, which helped organize large protest rallies during the Iraq war, said it would hold marches Sunday in seven US cities, as well as three separate ones in New York.
"We are very saddened by the jury's verdict," said Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump after the verdict was read. "The family is heartbroken."
Rights activist Al Sharpton posted a statement on Facebook describing Zimmerman's acquittal as "a slap in the face to the American people."
"We intend to ask the Department of Justice to move forward as they did in the Rodney King case and we will closely monitor the civil case against Mr. Zimmerman," said Sharpton.
Benjamin Todd Jealous, head of the NAACP, the premier US civil rights group, said his organization is "outraged and heartbroken" over the verdict.
"We will pursue civil rights charges with the Department of Justice, we will continue to fight for the removal of Stand Your Ground laws in every state, and we will not rest until racial profiling in all its forms is outlawed."
The controversial laws allow people who fear for their lives to use deadly force to defend themselves without having to flee a confrontation.
"The jury found he acted appropriately in defending his life in accordance with the law," George's brother Robert Zimmerman Jr. said on CNN.
"I think that conjecture and speculation and emotional reaction to what people think may or may not have happened has been dominating the discussion for a long time."
Robert Zimmerman however said that "there are people that would want to take the law into their own hands ... and they will always present a threat to George and his family."

We will never know what really happened as the NSA still lacks the technical abilities to surveil all of us all of the time, or least they won't admit to it. We see our police defend unloading a clip of ammo into a person threatening them with a broom stick or pocket bulge, while ther rest of us are forced to justify our actions before a media saturated trial, being told that unless we are on certified life support their is no apparent excuse for fearing our own death. We are also told that racially motivated gestures fully justify any act of aggression. As we see repeatedly, only white Americans, or white Hispanic Americans are capable of racism, while the New Black Panthers are simply the justifiable expression of centuries of white on black injustice, and this trial was used to convey this message. After all of this said, it is more than obvious that what this is really about is a media and government that sees their only path to power through class, sex and racial division. So the manipulation continues.
I disagree. More than enough evidence (and information) was presented to allow us to know exactly what occurred. George Zimmerman was the victim here, and he was victimized in our name.

Remembering that day here in LA the verdict came out right around lunchtime on a weekday. I saw a coworker in the hallway and we both agreed that in about an hour or 2 there would be trouble. During the whole afair you could cut the tension in the city with a knife. At 2:30 in the afternoon we on the roof of the Hughes Aircraft Building at 2000 El Segundo Blvd and the fires covered everything to the north of us. By 3 pm we were all sent home as were most buisnesses in the city closed. If the riots haven't started yet they ain't gonna start, the sponteneity is n there the fever was not there. This was not Rodney by a long shot, thi was stupidity of 2 individuals. I think this is over unless someone goes hunting.

Interesting question on Piers Morgan - and if Trayvon was your brother then you should have tried to straighten his life out years ago. The 'racial' tension is less about 'race' than it is about poverty and the conditions and policies that continue to suppress those living in poverty. If blacks want to rise up and protest/fight that - they have my support - and they will be joined by Hispanics, Whites, Asians, and almost everyone else.

The black community is in denial of what is happening in their communities in almost every large city in this country. Black on Black capital crimes including murder, theft, etc. are unchecked. Thousands of blacks are killed by other blacks every year. It has been this way for at least 30+ years. Chicago is a prime example. WHY DOES THE BLACK COMMUNITY PUT UP WITH THIS?
Black leaders have not spoken up about it, - and they will not speak up about it. It is easier to blame whites for "keeping blacks" down, then fix the educational, social, and cultural issues that contribute to black on black crime. Where is the white and black liberal estabilshment in combating this scurge against innocent black children. When will we see the usual liberal crowd declare a war against black on black crime?
Local black leaders and activists have spoken out against it, but seldom any national black leaders, although Bill Cosby did to some small extent.

Compton now has large Hispanic population. Leimert park is pretty cool neighborhood. Baldwin Village, which is nearby, is a different matter.
Notice only liberal pansy states having protests/wanna-be riots. No problems in the actual state it happened in, Florida. Why? Because the population at large believes in self defense and being able to arm yourself against thugs and wanna-be thugs like in this situation. The 17 year old started a physical confrontation put the defendant in a position he couldn't leave the confrontation (had him on the ground and on top of him) so he shot the aggressor...17 year old lost the fight he started.
There's an old Cossack proverb that states...."he that would tell the truth should have one foot in the stirrup". I was half of a "salt and pepper" team in Berkeley in the late '70s. Looking back, I think race relations between blacks & whites were at their zenith at that time. Blacks realized most whites were not prejudiced and whites were looking forward to AAs assimilating into the broader culture. I also realize looking back that my best friend Jesse was always "black first" and a person second. It's as if he were "trapped" or "hemmed in" by his blackness. He could never get beyond race. With over 35 years of hindsight, it's plain to me that the vast majority of AAs will always remain a race apart and will not assimilate into the broader culture. To expect otherwise is simply wishful thinking.
What I find interesting about the whole affair is how Zimmerman is not even white. The media were desperate to paint him as white so they could have their fall guy, and so they wouldn't disturb the mythical, but never actually observed, hispanic/black rainbow coalition.
They are getting SO desperate. There are no stories out there of whites killing blacks (it is, as always, the opposite) so they just don't have anything to go with.
I live in LA, the supermajority of people that live in Compton and Watts are "Hispanics" mostly as a direct result of the ethnic cleansing which occurred during and after the Rodney King riots.
Any riots that do happen will undoubtedly hit the Black citizens the hardest.
BTW the supermajority of the arrested Rodney King rioters were Hispanics too.

This case proves the quote right again. If Zimmerman had been the black one and Martin the white, things would have been so much different.
