Israeli Subs Destroy Russian Missiles In Syria; Russia Holds Largest Post-Soviet Military Drill
While the (chemical) dust over Syria has yet to settle, one country is not waiting around before in tried and true fashion it kicks the proverbial hornets nest. Only this time the recipient of Israeli aggression is not some small country that can hardly afford to defend itself against made in the US, state-of-the-art weapons: it is Russia, if only indirectly. Last Friday, July 5, in the fog of the Egyptian coup, a contingent of 50 Russian-made Yakhont P-800 anti-ship missiles at the Syrian port-city of Latakia was destroyed. It has since become clear that the attack was launched by none other than an Israeli Dolphin-class (German-made) submarine according to a report in the British Sunday Times, which in turn contradicts a previous report that the attack had been the work of the Israeli air force.
Furthermore, the alleged Israeli naval strike was closely coordinated with the United States. While this open aggression on Russian interests in Syria for now remains unchallenged, one wonder what happens when the news hits that US-made weapons supporting Syrian "rebels" have been mysteriously blown up by Russian rockets and how furious the public outcry would be against such an open Russian provocation.

According to the report, the Israeli fleet of German-built submarines launched a cruise missile at the weapons cache after which Syrian rebels reportedly attested to hearing early-morning explosions at a Syrian port-side naval barracks.
On Friday, anonymous US officials told CNN that Israel had carried out an air strike on the Syrian city.
Three unnamed US officials told CNN the IAF had targeted Russian-made Yakhont anti-ship missiles that could pose a threat to Israel.
Qassem Saadeddine, spokesman for the Free Syrian Army’s Supreme Military Council, said the pre-dawn attack hit Syrian Navy barracks at Safira, near the port of Latakia. The rebel forces’ intelligence network had identified newly supplied Yakhont missiles being stored there, he said.
“It was not the FSA that targeted this,” Saadeddine told Reuters. “It is not an attack that was carried out by rebels. This attack was either by air raid or long-range missiles fired from boats in the Mediterranean.”
A loud explosion was heard near Latakia on Wednesday, an opposition monitoring group said, but the cause of the blast was unclear.
Fast forward one week when we learn that in a perfectly unrelated event, a massive military drill involving naval forces, strategic bomber aircraft, missile-defense teams, tactical and strategic missiles, infantry, and armored vehicles took place in Russia's far east: a perfectly unrelated exercise that just happens to have 160,000 soliders, 1,000 tanks, 130 aircraft and 70 naval vessels that has been classified as the largest of its kind in the post-Soviet period.
An unspecified number of Tu-95MS strategic nuclear bomber aircraft reportedly were being readied for combat missions at an airbase in the Amur region. An armored brigade with some 100 tanks made a 1,100-kilometer rail journey from Buryatia to the Tsugol testing ground in Chita Oblast.
Tank commander Dmitry Manyukin told the Russian TV news station Rossia 24 on July 14 that his company's final objectives in the exercise had not yet been issued in order to test the ability of Russian troops to respond quickly to freshly received orders.
"The peculiarity [of this drill] is that [although] we deployed here 24 hours ... it hasn't yet been disclosed to us where we will move from here and what we will be ordered to accomplish," he said.
According to Manyukin, the emphasis on being prepared for rapid deployment was being emphasized by the Defense Ministry in Moscow.
"Since the appointment of the new Defense Minister [Sergei Shoigu], combat readiness has been treated very seriously," he said. "Very strict demands have been put in place for combat readiness ever since."
The 83rd Airborne Brigade has been ordered from its base in Ussuriisk to Sakhalin Island, where an amphibious assault will be carried out in coordination with assault ships "Oslyabya" and "Nikolai Vilkov" assault ships.
A mobile radiation, chemical, and biological defense brigade has also been taking part in the exercise.

Putin has said he might personally participate in the drill, which is scheduled to end on July 20.
Surely this news alone, even in the absence of GDP-boosting riots, should be enough to send the S&P futures to 1,700 in tonight's upcoming Kevin Henry inspired, low volume melt-up ramp.

I would not be so sure that Israel obtained the destruction of 50 anti shipping missiles of Russia manufacture. Since Russia advises the Syrian military, especially in regard to these most modern Russian missiles, and since Russian personel are directly involved in the storage, transport and deployment of these missiles, it is fair to guess Russian military advisors have a say in how these missile systems are handled.
So, number one. Russia would never allow a deployment or storage of 50 missiles at one site in close proximity to each other, thus making one hit a complete kill of all the missiles. This goes against a long tradition of Russian operations. Russians since before World War II have been masters of deception on the battle field. They use lots of decoys, many times more decoys than actual weapons systems. Serbia used these Russian tactics to great success in the NATO air war against Serbia. In this case in Syria, it is likely that Russia has deployed decoy missiles, lots of them, and has dispersed both the storage and deployment of the actual missiles. Making the decoys the more obvious targets while expending the most concealment efforts on the real ones.
The idea is simply to present the enemy with NO idea of where the real ones are and which ones are decoys and which ones are real. In this case, Russia has surely allowed intelligence leaks to slip out about the location of the missiles in storage, only the leaks are about where the decoys are. This tactic was used by Serbia, letting intelligence leaks get out about wher weapons were located, even putting many in the open or semi concealed, making it look like they were trying to conceal them. The short story is that almost all NATO airstrikes hit decoys. Also, using micro wave ovens to simulate radars and other electronic emissions of military origin, Serbia pulled in numerous NATO anto radar and anti radiation missiles. Again, wasting almost all NATO air strikes.
I suspect, but can't prove, that Syria under Russian supervision is using the same tactics with regard to all moden Russian missiles systems in Syria. Thus, it is likely that Israel just wacked a lot of decoys and Syria and Russia knew full well that they had exposed these decoys for just the purpose of being hit.
Make no mistake, Russians are not the Iraqi or Libyan Army. They have fought wars before with the best opponents in the world, just the history if WII shows a long series of deception tactics and successful use of mass decoys against the Geman Army and Airforce. Even today, Russia has a special military branch who only purpose is diversion and decoys. These are the guys who trained the Serbs how to withstand a full out NATO air war and to lose only a handful of military weapons sytems. Even NATO now admits that almost no military targets were hit, NATO won when they switched to civilian targets and Serbia surrenderd with a fully intact ground force.
I believe Russia/Syria is deploying decoys and diversion to full effect in reguard to these modern and expensive missile systems. Israel might want to wait before the celebrations of this great victory. Russia stacking fifty modern missiles on one place in a war zone? This goes against all history of Russia weapons deployment in combat. Just a thought, that nobody seems to take into account. Russians were credited by the German Military after the war with making best use of these tactics of any other enemy they fought.
I'll agree with most of what you've posted. But not on deception by the old Soviet in WWII. German intelligence on Soviet front line units was very good during the war. One example, their intelligence was pointing to the possibility of the Russians cutting off the 6th Army (Paulus) in August of 1942. The best Intel in the world accomplishes nothing if it is not acted upon.

My own experience not only proves otherwise, but that most individuals (including our own glorious Generals and Colonels) vastly underestimate the intelligence of people who actually go outside everyday and work with their hands. rumor has it that Russia has already involved itself directly in the Syrian war at least twice, the first being that Turkish F-4 that was shot down, there are quite a few military insiders who are of the opinion that it was Russian ship born SAMs and not Syrian anti air artillery that brought the plane down as a not so subtle warning from Moscow not to take the lead in establishing a NATO no fly zone. apparently it worked because notice how quiet Turkey has been on the Syria issue for the last year or so, also it was not long after that incident that Turkey requested the patriot missile batteries. this was allegedly to help protect from attacks coming from Syria but a quick look at Turkish inventories shows they could have handled anything Assad could have thrown there way without the Pats. the second is the destruction and consequent salvage of an Israeli sub just over a month or two ago, allegedly Russian anti submarine sea and air units hunted down and killed the nuclear armed dolphin, then confiscated the missiles. again this is all from non-msm military insider web sites quoting official sources on both sides so I don't know how much of it is fact vs speculation.
i did just read an piece in PM about how the US Marines recently have drastically and rapidly changed there mission training and preparation from counter insurgency and anti terrorist operations back to preparing for large scale engagements with the armed forces of other nations. they are getting ready to once again go up against opponents with Tanks, artillery, advanced missile systems and all that comes with fighting an enemy with comparable technology, man power and resources.
...and now this, the term exercise is often a euphemism for mobilization which there seems to be a whole lot of going on right now. it seems clear that pretty much everybody with enough guns and money to sit at the high stakes table is preparing to go to war.

I like that this is being reported but I don't trust the report itself. Until there's confirmation from the Russian side or complaint from the Syrian government it could all be fake.
I doubt the Russians are so poorly prepared but if it's merely Russian weapon tech in the hands of less experienced Syrians perhaps that's all it takes. IDF makes good genocide soldiers. Doubt their morality but not their fighting skill. So long as it's not Russian personell that goes down, or Russian owned weapons, Russia has no reason to complain. They sell to a customer & what happens to the customer post-sale is not their problem. The distortion was painfully obvious last week when he came out with the bogus headline saying that 3/4 of all smartphones are infested with NSA spyware. He said the NSA "inserted" software when what they really did was "contribute" software, first to unix (way back before he was born), then to Linux, and then to Android, which is Linux for phones. Many here noticed his error and brought it to his attention, but he's apparently too arrogant to admit his mistake. Being a boxer can't be the entire explanation. He claims to do journalism here, not fighting.
Only reckless disregard for truth can explain his follow-up piece where he acknowedged in a parenthetical the infuriation of the open-source community over what was essentially his slander of GNU, both developers and products. He refused to acknowledge his clear error and persisted with knowingly and willingly publishing defamatory and patently false information about Android, and, by extension, all of Linux, and all of GNU.
What's his agenda in doing this? If Android was a person, what he did was libelous. Instead he slandered the entire open-source community, by scoffingly referring to their outrage over his defamatory and false "report" that essentially said that every Android smartphone is an NSA spy device. Nobody outside of military and spy agencies could know for sure whether the supposed attack from outside Syria (which might even not have happened!) was launched by submarine or by airplane, and both by Israel. And what's the point of naming Germany as the source of a submarine that may or may not be the launch vehicle? How could Tyler "know" for sure it was a Dolphin-class sub? Zombie proles will see the picture and think that if he's got a picture it has to be true. Picture don't lie, right?
