Thomas Sowell Asks "Who Is Racist?"

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Thomas Sowell, via Jim Quinn's Burning Platform blog,

I am so old that I can remember when most of the people promoting race hate were white.

Apparently other Americans also recognize that the sources of racism are different today from what they were in the past. According to a recent Rasmussen poll, 31 percent of blacks think that most blacks are racists, while 24 percent of blacks think that most whites are racist.

The difference between these percentages is not great, but it is remarkable nevertheless. After all, generations of blacks fought the white racism from which they suffered for so long. If many blacks themselves now think that most other blacks are racist, that is startling.

The moral claims advanced by generations of black leaders - claims that eventually touched the conscience of the nation and turned the tide toward civil rights for all - have now been cheapened by today’s generation of black “leaders,” who act as if it is all just a matter of whose ox is gored.

Even in legal cases involving terrible crimes - the O.J. Simpson murder trial or the charges of gang rape against Duke University students - many black “leaders” and their followers have not waited for facts about who was guilty and who was not, but have immediately taken sides, based on who was black and who was white.

Among whites, according to the same Rasmussen poll, 38 percent consider most blacks racist and 10 percent consider most whites racist.

Broken down by politics, the same poll showed that 49 percent of Republicans consider most blacks racist, as do 36 percent of independents and 29 percent of Democrats.

Perhaps most disturbing of all, just 29 percent of Americans as a whole think race relations are getting better, while 32 percent think race relations are getting worse. The difference is too close to call, but the fact that it is so close is itself painful — and perhaps a warning sign for where we are heading.

Is this what so many Americans, both black and white, struggled for, over the decades and generations, to try to put the curse of racism behind us — only to reach a point where retrogression in race relations now seems at least equally likely as progress?

What went wrong? Perhaps no single factor can be blamed for all the things that went wrong. Insurgent movements of all sorts, in countries around the world, have for centuries soured in the aftermath of their own success. “The revolution betrayed” is a theme that goes back at least as far as 18th century France.

The civil rights movement in 20th century America attracted many people who put everything on the line for the sake of fighting against racial oppression. But the eventual success of that movement attracted opportunists, and even turned some idealists into opportunists.

Over the generations, black leaders have ranged from noble souls to shameless charlatans. After the success of the civil rights insurgency, the latter have come into their own, gaining money, power and fame by promoting racial attitudes and actions that are counterproductive to the interests of those they lead.

None of this is unique to blacks or to the United States. In various countries and times, leaders of groups that lagged behind, economically and educationally, have taught their followers to blame all their problems on other people — and to hate those other people.

This was the history of anti-Semitic movements in Eastern Europe between the two World Wars, anti-Ibo movements in Nigeria in the 1960s, and anti-Tamil movements that turned Sri Lanka from a peaceful nation into a scene of lethal mob violence and then decades-long civil war, both marked by unspeakable atrocities.

Groups that rose from poverty to prosperity seldom did so by having racial or ethnic leaders. While most Americans can easily name a number of black leaders, current or past, how many can name Asian American ethnic leaders or Jewish ethnic leaders?

The time is long overdue to stop looking for progress through racial or ethnic leaders. Such leaders have too many incentives to promote polarizing attitudes and actions that are counterproductive for minorities and disastrous for the country.

None of this matters because the bernanke will hand over another $85B this month to the prime dealers, who will quietly transfer that money to the executive committee by way of bonus.

Everything else is just noise in the system.

That's another myth. Most of the "slaves' were indentured servants - most of whom were white.

Slavery was endemic in Africa but typically when slaves were taken, the women were incorporated into the slaveholder's family and the males were killed. Once the transatlantic slave market opened up, there was a use for those black men.

Feudal serfdom in Europe was not far removed from slavery; though, serfs had some rights (vs. Roman Empire slaves). The last country to abolish serfdom was Russia, in 1861. Muslims took Christian slaves, and some Christian countries held Muslims in slavery. Only after the discovery of America, slavery became largely race based.

BTW, feudal lord-vassal principles have survived in the US. Our government (ruler or lord) and people (ruled or vassals) is the feudalism.

moronic comparison:

Asian American and Jewish "ethinic" leaders: well, Jews are what 2% of US and yet 11% of Senate (wiki), 5% of House, 30% of Supreme Court. Economics-Bernanke, Greenspan--'nough said. Jews don't need ethnic leaders because Jews define the broader culture. Jewish culture is preparation for modern culture (Not sure if apocraphyl or not, but Einstein was supposed to have said that Jews occupied so many university slots in Germany because, "Jews have been studying for entrance exams for 2000 years.") Jews are the culture as talmudic study, rational thought & discourse is roughly equal to the skills required to excel in modern society.

Every other culture has ethnic leaders- Chavez, blah blah blah.

Thats how you keep the slaves from attacking the master, you pit the slaves against eachother.

White vs. Black.

Sadly, Whites are now the ones suffering from racism.

Blacks are so blinded by hate that they think this is a "good thing"

And whites honestly (most of them) don't give a shit what color you are so long as you don't go after their money.

See, Whites don't care about racism.

Whites care about keeping their land and resources and having the freedom to do what they please with their "stuff"

Black people have an agenda to "screw over" white people by making them "suffer" one way or another, blacks do this by playing the "race card", everytime something doesn't go their way they blame it on whitey.

When something goes wrong with in a white guys life:

Fuck wtf , how the fuck did I get into this situation, suma bitches screwed me over.... o well... ill just downsize , sell the car, find a cheaper apartment... work an extra job.

When something goes wrong with a black guys life:

Fucking white assholes takn whats mine and shit, Ima show white sumabitches whats what, *proceeds to rob a gas station and complains about racism and oppression when officers beat him half to death for shooting a teller.

See the difference?

White people deal with their problems.

Black people blame someone else.

O/C these are gross exagerations, (go ahead you can call the view "racist") , but as far as I am concerned its not racist if its true.

Black people love watermellon and fried chicken.

White people like other white people and would prefer to live in white neighborhoods because of the stigma about black neighborhoods (high crime etc...)

White people wana feel safe, they want to go to bed and keep both eyes closed.

Black people sleep with the door open because someone stole their door three nights ago, along with their left sneaker and half a kit-kat bar left on the counter.

Its just the way shit is, it aint no ones fault, shits just fucked up because these clowns play us off against eachother.

If you black people are looking for someone to blame.

Blame the bank for not lending you money to start a business or go to school.

Blame the bank for forclosing on the house you paid into for 9 years.

Blame the bank for mailiing you 100 credit cards and then suggesting that you make only the minumum payments for 20 years.

Blame the bank for fucking printing money and making the measly 8$ -4$ the govt takes worth only 90cents at the store in purchasing power.

BLAME THE FUCKING BANKS , AND LEAVE WHITEY ALONE.

MAYBE THEN WE CAN MAKE SOME FUCKING PROGRESS.

Look, white people wana unify with black people, but black people are the ones keeping us out, its like we are white people knocking on the door of black people, we even brought cake and watermellon, but you black people are so paranoid that you wont let us in, you just think of us as seperate, while most of the white people think of us as all one race (humans).

See

there are black people that are human, and white people that are human and they are just both human.

then there are black people that think of themselves as "black" and your white and we don't mix.

Sure there are white "racists" too, but those fuckers are soo old and there are soo few of them, that they dont really even fucking matter anymore.

The real progress is going to be made when whites and blacks unify to beat the banks.

I always think of racism as 'tribalism', or 'culturalism'.

Basically, most of us are still afraid of someone whose different.

There was a time when that was a necessary survival reaction. But not now. (Well.... mostly.)

"Race" is only just a function of geography. No more than that. Generally, if you look at large enough groups of people, you'll find they are pretty much the same.

The Zimmerman verdict was highly significant.  The One and his crew wanted this one badly.  I have not, in my 52+ years, ever seen one common schmuck set upon by the ganglands of power (White House, DOJ, media, the Lexus Liberals).  The overwhelming denigration of this man, the collective bootheel to the face, was remarkable.  I saw what was happening when I finally saw a photo of the grown-up Trayvon, dead-eyed gangsta, not the 10-year-old every single MSM outlet was running.

The utter ruthlessness of the attack upon an everyday American, by the highest office in the land on down, is truly breathtaking.

The One wanted this for several crucial reasons:

1.   Further gun control propaganda;

2.   Further race agitprop to strengthen his perceived constituents;

3.   Cement martial law or the gradual setting of it.

This was a very good result for freedom-loving Americans of any race.  And it exhibited again and even moreso the brazen corruption and brutality of the current Admin.

It's important to note that legal definitions of guilt and innocence are different from what people consider to be true.  By law, OJ Simpson was not guilty.  That did not make him innocent by law.  It certainly didn't make people think he didn't do it.  As for this Zimmerman/Martin case, I thought race only had a little bit to do with it in the first place.  The evidence was equivocal enough that nobody will ever change their mind about this case.

This case says a lot about the importance of serious law-making.  Florida's laws don't seem to have been put together with much of a mind to how things really go down in real life, nor any recognition of the fact that the same facts look very different depending on your point of view.  What the Zimmerman/Martin case showed was how some thought-out laws will eventurally serve as a magnifying lens for all the unresolved crap in our society.  It can't possibly have been the intent of Florida legislators to make it seem that if you get into a confrontation, you're better off killing the other guy than walking away or calling it a draw; but here we are.  This time the fault lines exposed were racial.  No doubt we'll see a case with socio-economic class ramifications.  Or gender.

Spectacular cases tend to make for bad law.  This time, it seems the bad law has made for a spectacular case.  And we've got a lot of bad laws on the books; passed in the heat of fearful emotion, without circumspection.  We'll get no end of trouble from those laws.  But it will be sexy media.

It is not possible to write laws to anticipate every circumstance even though lawmakers would like us to believe otherwise. There are good and bad laws but there is no universal version of justice as it is in the eye of the beholder (not Eric). Politics is about attrition and the forcing of ones opinions on to others. Laws and their interpretation are the weapons of political wars.

There are definitely many bad laws on the books (I'd say the vast majority, but I digress).  However, I don't believe the Zimmerman case had anything to do with "bad law."  The law has imposed a "reasonable man" standard on these types of things for as long as anyone can remember...  As it turns out, a jury believed that a reasonable person, in Zimmerman's shoes, would have shot Martin too...  Frankly, it was an incredibly easy decision and we should all be so lucky as to have that easy of a decision if we're called to jury duty.  ("close" cases do exist).  The death threats the poor bastards on the jury will surely receive over the coming months/years will be the only tragedy of this case.

Stand your ground was not a factor in this case, nor any other obscure law.

The only thing was self-defense.

Do you even know what justifiable homicide is?

When one's head is being smashed into the ground, and MMA-style ground and pound is being administered (like the witnesses and EVIDENCE suggested in this case), what do you think the verdict should be?

The police chief knew right off the bat there was no case. Cement is a deadly weapon. Plus Zim had a broken nose. Do you think Trayvon broke his nose after he got shot?

Don't believe me....go smash your head against it and see what happens.

The chief said so......and he was fired becuase idiots like you thought "there has to be a law".

Trayvon was a young thug. Period.

I wish he would have lived so he could possibly go from thug to decency.

We will never know. regardless, thousands of blacks have been murdered since Trayvon, almost exculsively by other blacks.

And no one gives a fuck. That is the real tragedy.

Not really.  She knew that Zimmerman would be acquitted from day 1...  The appearance of her favoring the prosecution is simply standard fare for these cases...  she likely made the case "appeal proof" by siding with the prosecution on key evidentiary issues, knowing the prosecution was going to lose anyway.  Any seasoned trial judge does this in every type of case...  standard fare.

the moral call goes out to the common man to be color blind, to treat everyone equally and fairly and then,

our governments, courts, universities, social elite and so called civil rights leaders do the exact opposite;  they give out jobs, money, scholarships, admissions, loans, preferences and favored treatment all solely on the basis of the color of the recipients' skin and ethnic background.   e.g. why do we have black tv channels, black history month, black award shows, black academic standards - why do we have a black club in congress? why do we have a group of people that only seek the advancement of "colored" people?

epitome of do as I say not as I do.

As much as we often hear mention of blind justice, if justice is to be blind, upon what will justice be determined? Is not race as much a fact in this case as time lines and motivations? Race is the issue and the death of Martin is but one of the "facts" of the case. Thousands of people die daily so it can't be death that makes this case so important. It is because a "white" hispanic "gunned down" a pure of heart man of similar complextion to our Great Leader. In the Great O's adopted home town of Chicago we see massive black on black murders nightly yet have yet to hear the name of a single defendant in one of these cases on any MSM. The left has made them dependent victims ON PURPOSE, that's how they're guaranteed 100% of the plantation vote.  The left is really doing the same thing to the entire US population.  Thru it's educational system, Hollywood and the MSM, that's why people really need to unplug.  They know that dependent victims always chose statism over freedom.

What went "wrong"????

When 13% of a population (Black Americans) is responsible for 53% of the murders FBI crime statistics, that tells you right there.  The glorification of the "thug" lifestyle, "gold grill" and all.  Would you hire someone with gold teeth and their pants down to their knees if they came in and asked for a job, regardless of their race, color or social standing?????  Of course not.   Blacks see that determination as "racism".

In the first 10 days of July, posted here on ZH in comments, 20 black Americans were murdered in Chicago, by guns, kinves, beatings, etc.  A city with maxed out gun control, and a huge instuitionalized governmental hoandout mechanism.

It ain't the knives, guns, or anything else, it is black males committing these atrocities on their own.  And no white person is going to fix this.  That voice calling out those are going to have to be voices of black Americans.  The black males in America need some internal soul searching, and find the explanation within them for these problems.  These are self inflected wounds.

Black Americans ARE the problem for Black Americans.

And I DID NOT STATE that ALL 13% were murders. YOU ARE AN ASS to bring THAT out.  That is your problem.  You cannot face the reality of the situation.

And what is TRULY sickening.

20 blacks killed in Chicago and not ONE FUCKING WORD out of YOU or any CONCERN WHATSOEVER.

What do you care about?

Racism, not murders in that race.  Pathetic.  Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees, hell not seeing the forest for the LEAVES!!!

Apparently you do see everything in the prism of race, you just don't see yourself as "racist".  I don't see "racism" here.  Only a fool like yo would.  What I see are an enlightened group discussing where the "racism" has played itself out by overuse of the "race card".

What blacks won't acknowledge is that almost invariably blacks were first captured and enslaved by other blacks, who then sold them to Arabs and whites.  The primary violence was black on black (in Africa), just as today it is in Chicago, Detroit and the rest of the US.  But it's always someone else's fault.

No race or culture has a monopoly on violent behavior, but in my view slavery is still a choice, just as today we make choices that take us ever deeper into its arms. Our country's founding fathers chose against slavery for themselves. We are left to make our own choices. What will you do? Will you resist or wait until they are loading you onto the "slave ships"? I will be the first to say that many times the choices we are faced with suck, but it is those choices that define us. Many black Americans have made their choice and that is what is defining them today, not any particular prejudice that another may have for them.

The only racism I experience every day comes from the government. Every time I diagnose what the government has required as reportable ( STDs, HCV, tuberculosis) to Public Health I must disclose the patients name address and race. There are heavy fines for non compliance. Every year the rates of these diseases are tabulated by race. As if someone cares if he got an std from an Asian or a Hispanic. I don't know the point of this. But I think it's the height of hypocracy for the government to preach equal opportunity and then compile racial statistics in so many areas. Obviously someone must be getting rich somehow with all this information or why bother.

Instead of defining themselves as individuals, most people have been taught to define themselves by their race, their gender, their sexuality, their nationality, their tribe, their affiliations, their loyalties, their team...anything but define themselves by their own character.

Therefore, society devolves into pissing matches based on discriminatory self-concepts rather than judging others on their character.

I grew up in a segregated south.   The grievances held by black folks are real.  The Jim Crow laws existed.  There were real abuses.  But somehow between then and now the march for equality morphed into something else.  For some elements of the civil rights movement, equality was insufficient.  Revenge was demanded.  Whites that supported the movement have been marginalized.  The push for equality has been replaced by a push for racial advantage.

While it is true that a minority of whites north and south were slave holders, it is a myth that more than a quarter of the whites were slave holders.  Nevertheless, a significant portion of the white population quietly accepts white guilt for the travesties of slavery and the misdeeds of a slave holding minority.

We are now a hundred and fifty years removed from the slave era.  The first quarter of the twentieth century was marked by race riots against black victims.  The last quarter of the twentieth century has been marked by race riots against white victims.  The roles of victim have been reversed.  Consequently white guilt is beginning to subside. It is very difficult to argue for reverse discrimination when the most powerful positions in the land are held by the once disenfranchised minority.

The human condition is one that does not readily accept the notion of equality unless it is used to gain advantage to surpass any perceived equality. Said another way, our competitive nature seeks to overpower those around us and will only press for equality when it is seen as a way of handicapping the competition. No racial or other "group" will ever be satisfied with equality. Humans, like every other living creature, play to win. Laws to ensure equality of opportunity are all that is required of a free system and anything that demands equality of results is anything but freedom.

The black community in the US has clearly hardened. They are no longer listening to or trust the American dream and those that sell it. They have been lied to and let down by the promise of the future for so long that they are teaching their kids that there is no point trying and only rebellion and open warfare against the state is what you live for. I'm not sure I can blame them. Maybe they are just quicker on picking up on what is really happening here. When you have been pushed down for so long you begin to get an instinct for the next deal and whether or not it is worth fighting for. The black community has an ear for disenfranchisement

I guess that is what is making them different than the US white population. The white population is only in the first generation of being lied to and let down regarding the American dream. They have yet to be hardened. They are a generation or two from no longer trusting the state and rebelling like the almost 'never been welcome at the table' black community. The white community is still teaching their kids that if you work hard and get a good education you can make it in America. Their kids are being 'taught' otherwise and they will teach it to their kids

Yes, the lies that politicians and self appointed black leaders have been telling them. No need in an education unless you can get a sports scholarship. Working a regular job is "selling out" to the white man. To assimilate into mainstream American culture is to deny your culture, even if you have to make one up. Yes you are right, they have been lied to plenty.
