Although there is an element of political theater to all this government shutdown business, I sense that these increasingly-pitched battles over budgets are really reflective of deeper systemic problems, most notably the cost of oil. Since economic growth is highly correlated with energy expenditures, if the cost of oil goes up, economic growth will decline accordingly. And since the financial system debt ponzi absolutely requires growth to enable existing levels of financial pilfering (not to mention growth in pilfering), it would appear that the only available method for increasing profits of financials is straight-up theft through Fed interventions including things like money-printing (QE forever - and ZIRP, also forever). i.e. a zero-sum game.
It seems clear to me that this financial parasitism simply will not be able to continue on its current course. Eventually the unstoppable force will meet the immovable object. Folks might not notice how much the wealthy benefit during periods of economic growth if they are also beneficiaries, but during economic contraction this sort of wealth-extraction becomes much more difficult to conceal.
