Senate Kills House Bill: What Happens Next
Now that the Senate has killed the latest proposal passed by the House, and with Harry Reid making it clear he is not interested in a one week Continuing Resolution stopgap, Bloomberg reports that the House will take the tabled bill and make these two changes to it:
- HOUSE PLAN SAID TO DELAY INDIVIDUAL MANDATE OF HEALTH CARE LAW
- HOUSE PLAN SAID TO CUT HEALTH SUBSIDIES FOR LAWMAKERS, STAFF; U.S. HOUSE WILL TRY TO PASS NEW EMERGENCY FUNDING BILL REQUIRING OBAMA
AND ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS TO SIGN UP FOR OBAMACARE-REP. ISSA
And, as expected, if and when this iteration of the dead-end bill passes, the Senate will kill it again. So unless there is a dramatic change in strategy by either party, the government shutdown in just over 9 hours (however brief or not so brief) seems inevitable.

Go ahead, downvote. But if the Constitution really is the awe-inspiring document everyone believes it to be, how did we get here if our government is bound to the Constitution. Everything that has been done to circumvent the Constitution has been made Constitutional due to Judicial Review. What is the sense of having the government be allowed to make the laws and then also give it the ability to determine whether or not the law is just?
Because the Constitution is just a set of ideals placed on paper. The ideals don't defend themselves, no matter how noble they are. They require people to be vigilant in their defense. It is not the fault of the Constitution that Americans have become lazy and apathetic. It's still one of the greatest documents ever written.
The Constitution has allowed the American government to swell to the size it is now. Maybe allowed is the wrong word. Has not inhibited would work better. I'm not saying the Constitution is bad, I'm just saying it could be a lot better.
Wrong, the American people have allowed their government to ignore the social contract (The Constitution). If you're not going to insist on them adhering to it of course they will ignore it.
I'm obviously not a constitutional scholar but what in the Constitution gives the people the means to insist that the government adheres to the Constitution?

The Declaration of Independence is a set of ideals, the Constitution is the LAW and the unwillingness of the Supreme Court to defend it, the willingness of the executive to shred it and the willingness of Congress to go along are the reason it has failed.
The Constitution was DESIGNED to minimize the effect of the passions (democracy) of the people on government and it's functionality. You might want to read about how the Constitution came into being (a coup d'tat over the Articles of Confederation), why it came into being (the founders were merchantilists) and why it is conveniently ignored when powerful people want it so.
In a more honorable age another Senator would have walked up to this stuttering bag of scat and slapped him across the face and told him to meet him on the capitol steps for the duel.

If the Republicans want to dely, repeal, modify ObamaCare, then win both houses of Congress and the Presidency...if they can't do that, then tough luck.
They ran on repealing ObamCare last time and went down in flames. Now they're betting the next election cycle on ObamaCare; the results won't be better the second time around.
The Senate/Obama will never delay/repeal, so the R's either have to shut down the Government until the next elections, or they have to cave...horrible corner they've boxed themselves into...all the Democrats have to do is sit back and wait...while reminding the American people it's the Republicans they're waiting on...

Power of the purse is with the house. This government is run by assigned powers (unless Obama wants to grant a waiver then it is another matter.). The senate and the president have had their shot at funding the government. All they have to do is treat everyone like the special interests that got waivers. Make the issue congressional and executive branch carve outs and the R's are on the winning side of that argument.
There isn't a damn thing republicans could do to make me "like" them-- but if they get credit for this shutdown I'll hate them less... and if it lasts all the way till the next election cycle, maybe with a bonus default in between, I'll have no choice but to vote R in all races.

All boner needs to do is allow pelosi to bring clean bill up for a vote. If all the D's vote Yes then pelosi only needs 17 or 18 R's to vote Yes (like the asslick from ny "little" peter king) and the clean bill passes. That is how this will end.
If boner allows the so-called clean bill to come up for a vote (disobeying the Hastert rule that only major legislation agreed to by the Republican Caucus shall be submitted to a general vote) then the Republicans will be replacing him as Speaker.

No more continuing resolutions, no nothing until they do their freakin jobs and at least give us the perception that this house of cards can stand much longer.

Who really thinks this is anything more than theater? Sure, they may 'shut down' but all it will really mean is they'll pass some kind of emergency appropriations measure or whatever they call it so everything continues as it has been, and by 'as it has been' I mean, the government will continue to spend money it doesn't have on special interests that it serves. In fact, this is probably better, since the more the spending is by emergency measure, probably the less it counts against the (meaningless, barely even symbolic) debt ceiling.
The only real significance this could possibly have is if, somehow, even the most ardent and indoctrinated Treasury and USD supporters start to question the wisdom of allowing a country that has devolved to a point where they're continually passing 'special measures' to fund their absurd deficit spending, the privilege of owning/printing/managing the world reserve currency.
