Bureau Of Economic Analysis, USDA Websites Go Dark

Tyler Durden's picture

Feel like pulling up some Bureau of Economic Analysis data, such as what US GDP is? Good luck.

This also means that virtually all government-sourced economic data for the duration of the shutdown is now also offline. Luckily, the Fed only cares about the level of the S&P when making its monetary policy decisions. Else, it may have some difficulty in determining how QE is impacting the actual economy.

The silver lining: the USDA is also down. So those who want to find out how many Americans are on foodstamps, they will just have to wait.

I would love to see this drag on for weeks and see how quickly and efficiently the private sector would fill the demand for this type of information.  Competetion would drive accuracy, honesty, and integrity--something the monopolistic .gov has no incentive for.

Had government employees not done a thing, the servers used for these web sites would have continued to run until some failure took them off line. It is clear that the last bit of "work" done by the furloughed bureaucrat minions was to "work" at putting up a shutdown message. This is along the lines of closing the national parks. Make the public feel the pain of a shutdown in as direct a manner as possible. But what else would we expect from the Governing Class?

Maybe locking US out of OUR parks will wake some people up.

There is no excuse for denying access to data available on the servers.  Again, maybe more people will wake up.  Just like the sequester (which the administration took credit for reduced spending), they will make it as painful for the people as possible.

It's time to outsource government statistics to South Korea anyway.  They'll produce far more accurate statistics for a fraction of the price.

But, but remember how they advocated to keep private sector jobs in the US, so they're salaries could be paid for?

Me neither.

But, but government workers could earn much, much more in the private sector.
