Say It Often Enough And It's True

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Simon Black of Sovereign Man blog,

Try this experiment.

Ring up your credit card company at the end of this month. Tell them that you and your spouse can’t seem to reach an agreement about how to allocate your monthly budget.

So in the meantime, you have been forced to shutdown your household... but you hope to be back on track in a few weeks.

Chances are, they won’t take you seriously. Yet for some reason, this has been dismissed as commonplace and benign in the Land of the Free.

Here’s a list of quotes we’ve heard from the telescreen talking heads over the last 24-hours:

“We’re still the richest most powerful nation in the world.”

“It doesn’t matter, the bond market is going up.”

“The United States will never default.”

The hubris and arrogance here is amazing. And it just goes to show that if you just repeat something over and over again, people will believe it... no matter how absurd.

This is the basic premise behind propaganda. Start with an idea. Inundate the population through constant repetition. And soon it becomes the unquestionable truth.

To suggest that the United States is NOT the richest country in the world, or that the government could default, is tantamount to blasphemy.

It doesn’t matter that every objective scrap of evidence points to the inevitable conclusion that the US government is going to have to default on its obligations.

They could default on their obligations to foreign creditors– China, Japan, the Gulf states– and risk a total collapse in the dollar’s ‘value’ internationally...

Or they could default on the Federal Reserve, rendering the central bank insolvent, and risk an epic currency crisis…

Or they could default on domestic financial institutions and risk an even bigger banking crisis…

Or they could simply default on their obligations to citizens by curtailing Social Security and debasing the currency.

The only question is– who gets screwed?

Having this sort of public discussion, however, is considered ludicrous and irrational. The propaganda is so effective that people continue to believe in this fairy tale that America is the Land of the Free and the richest country in the world.

Yet it’s this fairy tale that is ludicrous and irrational. Looking at the data objectively, having a candid discussion, and getting your own affairs together to withstand the inevitable fallout– this is the most rational thing that anyone can do.

Yeah... well... not to be to dark, Simon.  But in all your calculations you tend to leave out the fact that the collapsing nation in this picture also has nukes, the biggest military in history, and a bunch of jarheads who are dying for any excuse to launch a full scale invasion of Whereverstan.

You can call it "arrogance" and "hubris", and you wouldn't be wrong except for the even scarier fact that it might not be arrogance:  It might be backed up with World War Three.   And historically speaking, this is exactly how such clusterfucks start.

Military empires don't go silently into the night unless the lid is kept tightly on them by a greater military force.   And in this case, there ain't one.   So grab your ankles everyone because this shit could get exponentially uglier than just a "default".

It's mission of destroying age old empires had ended, as they were all replaced by "new & improved" governments, so it was no longer cost effective to continue.

The West? It will either go violently in a cloud of smoke (WWIII), or will be continually discredited by the likes of Putin who is being setup as the only alternative to global peace.

Either way, global government will be the outcome. Question is, will you fight, and lose, or will you allow yourself to be led peacefully into slavery?

Don't have your timeline ron'...

When you were wearing the uniform you still had an infrastructure in this Country that was plenty viable making stuff and had taxpayers not welfare recipients that could pay off  "more" of it's national debt that at the time was non-existent by comparison to anything that we are witnessing now.

Today it's Uncle Sam with one hand selling off more American jobs through offshoring and providing incentives to buy more land and resources to lower our debt obligations and with the other hand always threatening everyone with our military when we don't get our way in having them purchasing ever increasing amounts of our debt.  Why would they?  And for that matter why would we expect anybody to sign up to something like that when we ourselves would never do it?  It's a strategy that has failed.  In fact if you are a Vietnam Vet the handwriting was on the wall after that misadventure ended and should have provided all the lessons we ever needed never to do it again.

Let's face the conspiracy facts after 9/11 ron'.  This economy started it's strategic nose dive 12 years ago.

I know plenty in the military who are on-board with those "facts" that got us to this place.  So why would anyone knowing what we know and who did Manhattan and D.C. deluxe  at this stage risk all of it after all the eggregious mistakes we've made in attempting a shooting match with the likes of Russia who will in fact give us more than a bloody nose and a bad case of hemorrhoids.

At some point like the Soviets did in the 80's and 90's you have to be smart enough to know when your sun has set especially when you have a track record of losses that shouldn't allow you to continue the fight.

The only question remains is whether this "trigger" event is one that is manufactured by the govt or is just a natural collision of life's circumstances. In any event, when this does happen (this week, next month or next year . . . it really doesn't matter) the game will be over and the Late Great United States will be nothing more than a chapter (or foot note) in some future history book describing yet another failed republic.

Con men (and women) just love stupid people who can't think for themselves.  And when they have stupid and ignorant together, they got a real big fish on the line.

IMO, the ONLY relevant question that matters is:  When will the BRICs start dumping Treasuries?  Before or after Sochi 2014?

The "End-of-the-Dollar-as-the-Reserve-currency" starts right after that.

Is that a bad thing? Wouldn't that make our exports cheaper, imports more expensive, and add to the GDP?

Default depends on what the meaning of default is.

In 1933, Roosevelt confiscated private gold, then devalued the money that was paid for it.  Read any news story that mentions the gold confiscation and the word default is not used.  Yet Roosevelt defaulted on those who turned in their gold.

“The United States will never default.”

It already has.

Yeah -- like we went to the moon!  Repeat as often as you like and it is still BS give the man a cigar. fact: no human has ever been more than a few hundred miles from the surface of the earth. the logistics of putting a human on the moon is far beyond our capacity.

Don't forget the old addage "If you owe the bank $100,000 and you can't pay, you have a problem. If you owe the bank $100 million and you can pay the bank has a problem."  In this case, the US owes its creditors $17 trillion. If the US can not pay, it's the creditors who have the problem.

"It doesn’t matter that every objective scrap of evidence points to the inevitable conclusion that the US government is going to have to default on its obligations."

"going to have to"?  They've been defaulting on an ongoing basis since at least August 1971.  (Nixon, gold window)...when government services are cut, rates rise, prices rise, or quality declines that IS a symptom of bankruptcy...

+10 Excellent point.

And what I previously intimated to 'bankguyinBrussels' on his comment, why we framed Nixon over something as trivial as the Watergate breakin when we should have thrown the prick in jail or worse for destroying our economy with the Petrodollar and continuing the illegal wars and occupations in Vietnam and surroundings.

What a wonderful legacy of "terror" this Country has. No?

"The hubris and arrogance here is amazing. And it just goes to show that if you just repeat something over and over again, people will believe it... no matter how absurd."...

Only ignorant, incompetent, truly asinine and over medicated people will believe something if you repeat it over and over again.

Oh and after the continuous Pavlovian rant of "terror" and "terrorists" piped into your head from George Walker for 8 years and believing it, you deserve to have the label of severely retarted monogrammed on your shirt like the "scarlet letter"

Not unique to America Mate! "Everyone" is far more comfortable living in the land of "Accepted Wisdom" handed down by their favourite commentators / News anchors / Sporting stars.

As for the "Severely Retarded" monogramming - it already exists in plain sight - in the form of those who are prepared to pay "extra" to act as a free walking billboard for their favourite "Designer Brand".

America is defaulting, has been defaulting, and will continue to default....so long as the notes are repaid in $$$$.

It is a stealth default that has obviously not been noticed by this article's author. We have been constantly defaulting on our paper ever since tricky dick removed the silver conversion.
