Five years ago today, the CEOs of the big banks visited one US president with one goal in mind: get billions in taxpayer dollars to get bailed out. Today, the same bank CEOs are once again at the White House, this time invited by a different president, "as part of the Obama Administration's ongoing efforts to mend relations with the financial services sector and woo their support for White House policy." One can assume that in addition to the trite generalities surrounding the shut government and the debt ceiling, one topic of conversation is how Wall Street can accentuate the severity of the ongoing governance crisis and most certainly includes such demands by Obama as "stop sending stocks higher when the only catalyst is my inability to create any sort of compromise."

Like, for eg, the gov't tells you it spent $400m buying a new "thingamabob" (cruise missiles, helicopters, maybe an aircraft carrier or dozens of drones), which will cost $800m (the rest is on the gov'ts tab). But the 'expense' for this year is just $20m because the thingabob will (supposedly) be useful for 20 years.

Space.com for the gravitational bit, but they don't come out and say the obvious after effects. Don't have to be a genius to know that a break up of a 6 mile diameter comet on its slingshot would put a damper on holiday shopping.

I don't know, looking at the trajectory, after it comes round the sun is trajectory is not parallel to Earth. So it looks to me like the tail will be above Earths orbit (in the December fly by). And then we go through in id January, where the comet passes here at the end of Oct.
