White House Issues Veto Threat On House "Piecemeal" Deal

Tyler Durden's picture

Not entirely surprising but the President is not amused at the House's "piecemeal" funding bill plans:

If the President were presented with H.J. Res. 70, H.J. Res. 71, H.J. Res. 72, H.J. Res. 73, and H.R. 3230, he would veto the bills.

And Via The White House,

STATEMENT OF ADMINISTRATION POLICY

H.J. Res. 70, 71, 72, 73 and H.R. 3230 – Limited Appropriations Resolutions, 2014
(Rep. Rogers, R-KY)

The Administration strongly opposes House passage of H.J. Res. 70, H.J. Res. 71, H.J. Res. 72, H.J. Res. 73, and H.R. 3230, making fiscal year 2014 appropriations for very limited activities. Consideration of appropriations bills in a piecemeal fashion is not a serious or responsible way to run the United States Government. Instead of opening up a few Government functions, the House of Representatives should re-open all of the Government. The harmful impacts of a shutdown extend across Government, affecting services that are critical to small businesses, women, children, seniors, and others across the Nation. The Senate acted in a responsible manner on a short-term funding measure to maintain Government functions and avoid a damaging Government shutdown. The House of Representatives should allow a straight up or down vote on the Senate-passed H.J. Res. 59.

If the President were presented with H.J. Res. 70, H.J. Res. 71, H.J. Res. 72, H.J. Res. 73, and H.R. 3230, he would veto the bills.

There must be some new playbook in politics which ignores the loss of credibility from backing down. First backing themselves into a corner on Syria only to cave, and now this, again.

I don't recall this sort of brinksmanship/caving being endemic in previous puppetships.

I hope they can't fix the debt ceiling issue either. That way they'll be forced to balance the budget. ("Defaulting" is just BS, they will still be collecting taxes which legally and constitutionally have to be used to fund the debt.)

let all the .gov types appreciate the type of .gov they have helped to create.

..and I had anything to do with it, I would tack on an amendment that precludes reimbursement for the furloughs and make that a point of contention to swap for Obamacare.

that would twist their panties in a knot.

It really makes me fucking mad when you can think of simple things that virtually EVERY American can agree to that will never be done that would greatly change the way D.C. works.

For example....   Make EVERY politician abide and live under EVERY law they create....   Or, make it illegal to pass laws that favor one business over another one... no special perks, no special protection, no special status based in law.

Those two things virtually every honest American could agree to, I would think but, simple and common sense has no place in our capital.

Our federal laws are filled with such shit that favors the big businesses and allows unmeasurable corruption and graft.... Our tax laws are used as weapons against certain businesses... our EPA has a SWAT team now....

Uuuuugh.   I don't look forward to what happens next.

1) very few if any congressional republicans are in threat of losing a seat over this.

2) playing up barry's obstinate nature here, and showing off polticial shitburgers like telling WW2 vets to go home from trips planned months ago could EASILY turn political favor.

March 16, 2006 CONGRESSIONAL RECORD—SENATE S2237-2238:

“Mr. OBAMA. Mr. President, I rise today to talk about America’s debt problem.

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Over the past 5 years, our federal debt has increased by $3.5 trillion to
$8.6 trillion. That is ‘‘trillion’’ with a ‘‘T.’’ That is money that we have borrowed from the Social Security trust fund, borrowed from China and Japan, borrowed from American taxpayers. And over the next 5 years, between now and 2011, the President’s budget will increase the debt by almost another $3.5 trillion.

Numbers that large are sometimes hard to understand. Some people may wonder why they matter. Here is why: This year, the Federal Government will spend $220 billion on interest. That is more money to pay interest on our national debt than we’ll spend on Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. That is more money to pay interest on our debt this year than we will spend on education, homeland security, transportation, and veterans benefits combined. It is more money in one year than we are likely to spend to rebuild the devastated gulf coast in a way that honors the best of America.

And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and
health security they have counted on.

Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities. Instead, interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans—a debt tax that Washington doesn’t want to talk about. If Washington were serious about honest tax relief in this country, we would see an effort to reduce our national debt by returning to responsible fiscal policies.

But we are not doing that. Despite repeated efforts by Senators CONRAD and FEINGOLD, the Senate continues to reject a return to the commonsense Pay-go rules that used to apply. Previously, Pay-go rules applied both to increases in mandatory spending and
to tax cuts. The Senate had to abide by the commonsense budgeting principle of balancing expenses and revenues. Unfortunately, the principle was abandoned, and now the demands of budget discipline apply only to spending.

As a result, tax breaks have not been paid for by reductions in Federal spending, and thus the only way to pay for them has been to increase our deficit to historically high levels and borrow more and more money. Now we have to pay for those tax breaks plus
the cost of borrowing for them. Instead of reducing the deficit, as some people claimed, the fiscal policies of this administration and its allies in Congress will add more than $600 million in debt for each of the next 5 years.

That is why I will once again cosponsor the Pay-go amendment and continue to hope that my colleagues will return to a smart rule that has worked in the past and can work again.

Our debt also matters internationally. My friend, the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, likes to remind us that it took 42 Presidents 224 years to run up only $1 trillion of foreign-held debt. This administration did more than that in just 5 years. Now, there is nothing wrong with borrowing from foreign countries. But we must remember that the more we depend on foreign nations to lend us money, the more our economic security is tied to the whims of foreign leaders whose interests might not be aligned with ours.

Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘‘the buck stops here.’’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit”

Martial law or bust. One big happy forced labor camp, or as the enemy combatants call it, single employer.

The Republicans in the House need to get these bills up to the Senate as soon as possible. That way the blame either transfers to Reid and the other Democrat senators who refuse to bring them to a vote, or to Obama who will veto them. A policy statement is useless and worthless - make him veto the bills. Besides, the policy is NOT set in stone - the wiggle room is that Obama mentions specific bills - so just change the numbers!

Disregard the idle threats of a veto. Move Forward.

The entire 20 minutes of yesterday’s narcissist Ms. Cleo readings will blow away all past acting as a World Leader authority out the window. Piecemeal everything, the public will finally see what was always suspected. . It’s so much easier to hide fraud in one big number, opposed to itemizing each cost.  Fuck you Barry!

I remember when Bill Clinton wanted a "line item veto" privilege that would allow him to take every bill from congress and just cross out the shit he didn't like but approve whatever he did like.

Liberals thought it was a swell idea and no one could convince them that this would make the president a practical dictator since congress would end up sending bills with every combination of everything for the president to choose from.

I cannot for the life of me understand why regular citizens cannot see 5 seconds into the future when they take sides on issues like the debt ceiling.
