Obama's going to eliminate the debt ceiling by EO or "emergency powers" before this is all over.  He in no way feels like he deserves to be constrained by it and he knows nobody's going to fight him on it if he does it.

The budget nobody could give a crap less about.  Fight over it till you're as bloodied up as you like.

Or you know, allow a default for a day or two and then come in as the savior and raise it/get rid of it by himself... and Obamabots will worship him even more for that. The House will not impeach his ass nor will the Supreme Court rule that it was unconsitutional.

A very likely scenario that has been hinted at repeatedly.   Funny how the 14th Am. does not designate the executive as the one with the power to make sure debts/etc. are respected.  Yet, they have their barrage of lawyers loyal to the Obama to put out disinformation.   I'd argue that the house has a better claim than the executive or senate to raising the debt limit if this perverted line of thinking leads to any one particular branch laying claim to unilateral action.

Sorry, but neither of those outcomes will happen, as nothing can get dialed back (we're long past the point of no return), while the GOP, though wounded, still represents the only meaningful alternative for the millions of statists who detest the current flavor of state. In other words, divide and conquer wins again.

Meanwhile, all of this theatre will be used to blame the unavoidable collapse (any time now) assured by the actions of 2008 onward (or 1913 onward, for the purists out there).

The use of RINO by repubs amuses me.  The Republican party was founded and solidified its power under the premise of hyperpowered central authority by killing everyone who opposed them and funding it with cash made up from nothing. If this is the legacy that "conservatives" want, why bother opposing the current idiot?

A Republican In Name Only isnt a statist lackey of Uncle Sugar, its anyone hoping for a country resembling what it was founded as who somehow thinks that is a Republican goal.  A belief that the Republican Party has ever stood against Statism is delusional- it gave birth to Leviathan.

Fri, 10/04/2013 - 15:24 | 4023502 Dewey Cheatum Howe
Dewey Cheatum Howe's picture

Survey says wrong. You can blame the roots of globalism and extended central authority on Woodrow Wilson who was a Democrat. Everyone just went along with game after the fact. The Repubs didn't birth this beast. They are guilty of helping it thrive and grow after the fact but we all are in that regard.

Fri, 10/04/2013 - 17:25 | 4023827 Lednbrass
Lednbrass's picture

Bullshit. You are aware that the Federal government killed hundreds of thousands long before Wilson was in office, yes? The Repubs started it during 1861-65, it goes back a helluva lot farther than Wilson. The globalist strain in the US did start with Wilson, but it was Ol' Honest Ape who started the "comply with the gubmint or die" tradition backed with paper money.

It is at least funny though to listen to Yankee repubs squalling as their beloved Federal Government grinds the descendants of its blue suited patsies into the dust- as if any other outcome were possible.

They replaced a system that enslaved some of the population with one that has the power to enslave all of the population, quite a victory for equality by the mighty Repubs.

just thinkin this may all be a ploy to squeeze the debt ceiling raise out of congress' hands and into the sole control of the EO (and those who pull those strings).

can't wait for BigO to get up to the BigT and say he's justifying his Order/Edact because "It's right there written in the Constitution in the 14th Amendment."

It could very well be a ploy (on both sides) to provide cover and move the debt ceiling to the Treasury, which is appointed. I'd bet a Krug that even the reps who don't want to raise the debt ceiling understand what the government is doing with debt expansion.  Fuck, if I know it, they should.

They play fast and loose with the rules all the time, so my reliance on that rule structure might be flawed.  But then again, I am subject to many more rules than they are.

Bottom line is that the aggregate debt needs to go up, and private expansion isn't cutting it.  Toss in a gazillion in unfunded liabilities and you can see where they are going with the FRN.  It is going to be devalued by creating many more of them.

Is massive spying essential? And who determines essentials? You? A splinter group of the Congressional majority? Is health insurance the one, most important, non-essential?

@Donsluck:  Who pays for this Republic?  Who participates in the decisions required for its maintenance?  Surely not just your party!  How can a democratic republic survive at all so that we may debate these millenia-old questions yet again if one party insists on spending more, much more, than the ability of the underlying economy to support?  The citizens of our nation have descended to the point that too many no longer hesitate to call on their fellow citizen to pay for their every modern civilizational whim, whether their fellow citizens approve or can afford it.  This is as much about the power of the state to regulate and dictate.  You seem willing to accept the state mandate we all purchase a product administered by bureaucracy and enforced by the Internal Revenue Service.  I am not willing to concede my right not to be coerced by the state into purchasing a product I don't want or need, especially when Congress exempts themselves from its costly effects.  I am glad to have the Repubs finally grow a set and fight for some fiscal sanity and try to roll back some of the ridiculous leftist tripe that passes for Law these days.

But those around Boehner also say he’s interested in “going big” to resolve the crisis — perhaps by striking the grand bargain that eluded him during talks with President Obama in 2011.

Boehner has quietly met with members of his conference this week, and hosted around 20 GOP lawmakers for lunch on Thursday. During that meeting, Boehner indicated he prefers reaching a big deal to avoid default and open the government.

“He’s really trying to find the pathway that not only gets the government up and running again but really allows for an opportunity to get some major things done beyond that,” a GOP lawmaker close to the Speaker told The Hill.

Grab your butt cheeks, it's coming.

They don't need to pass anything to prioritize debt payments.  That is taken care of by the 14th amendment.

Everything else is just a promise.  The 14th says that debts incurred will not be questioned.

So they really cannot default. They can only hack at programs that at best will get them tossed out of office, or at worst will get them swinging from a lamp post.

Not saying that's the 'ethical' move to make, but at this point.....ethical is a party-joke word for the gaggle of parasites infesting the Capitol.

Granted, repudiating the debt would get them shanked by the Banskter Mafia, which is why they won't do it, and why they ALWAYS insist that PRIORITY NUMBER ONE is to 'pay the interest on our national debt'. Cuz you know, the chilrenz and jobz.

I think this is a flushing out process, seeing what is really going to happen.  It is possible to pay all the ongoing interest payments with current income (taxes) so there is no need to default.  However, the spending on many areas will need to be curtailed or stopped all together.   I think Boehner is just re-stating what is known...that there is no crisis...that excessive spending will end, now.

I think the 16 years of Continuing Resolutions (CRs) have reached a rubicon.

Get a real budget and approve it, now.

Whatever happens, its better now than (20 years?) later.
