You are exactly right.

Sigint, from which this started, was directed at signals traffic by opposing military forces.  Even when you can't decode their messages (most of the time with sophisticated military opponents), it is still useful.  Large forces can't be mobilised and moved without a lot of communication, concentrated in time, and the locations of the communication is informative.

But small forces engaged in asymmetrical conflict don't need a mass of communication and they don't need the communication concentrated in time.  Now they know all electronic communication is monitored they will no longer use it (except for FBI plants and stooges), or if they do it will be with totally innocuous, previously agreed codes in the clear ("Hi Harry, are you coming to dinner Thursday?").

Anyone with the wit of a gnat would understand this.  So the people behind spending the hundreds of billions on NS:

a) have less than the wit of a gnat, or

b) they are seriously into self aggrandisement at the expense of the US taxpayer, or

c) are on a power trip that they have to know is a massive breach of the US constitution and a betrayal of the US population, about which they could not care a fig.

I suspect (a) is false, but (b) and (c) both apply.  Option (a) probably applies to the Congress critters that support this abomination.

The "analysis" is nine kinds of garbage, shows the same kind of mastery of statistics that Obama has of economics, that you get from smoking a joint in the faculty lounge of that department.

If a guy is standing there with a smoking gun over the corpse, you don't need a 99.9999% statistical filter to determine guilt.  You look for a few verifying facts and a lack of falsifying facts, and it's not a matter of decimal points.

If we have done things correctly than the whole fucking site should fill in anyone who is...clueless?  Fuck off NSA.  WE DON'T CARE if you know.  We WANT you to know.

These people who claim to be in charge do not intimidate anyone out here.  I can show them how to make a loaf of bread if need be.

They'd better hope those belts on the printing press pulleys do not break soon though.

You have no idea what is out in the MidWest.  We are patient people but we are running a bit short.

This government we have makes no sense for us.  I can not see a reason for a republic that is controlled by banks and DC.  Cui bono?  Not us!

If we don't stand up to these people now, then it's over. NWO, illuminati, debt slavery, zero privacy and devil worshiping, will be the new normal. These ideas will become generationally accepted. It's not looking pretty as it seems these powers are firmly entrenched. My best idea at this point to resist is quit paying your taxes and use the money to fortify your family. Or just go along to get along. Line up for your thinning as the world is reevaluated. It will be called The Great Reevaluation coming to a world economy near you.

If I was in charge of the NSA, I would do two things which are far more important than looking for inexistant terrorists.

1 - I would keep a finger on the pulse of the nation by analysing meta-data and watering down any nefarious ideas which find traction with on-line techniques which are now well understood.

2 - I would keep a close look at all the people with power in order to curb or control this power whenever necessary with soft but well targetted "hints" based on whatever confidential information I have.

But that's just me. I am sure nobody else would think about that...

They are being a bit disingenous here since in statistics in general you'd filter that further using things like confidence intervals or to keep in line with the calculation methods used in the example aka Bayesian statistics, credible intervals. With that said it doesn't remove all false positives (The Yenta on Long Island and her visit concerning searching backpacks and pressure cookers on google is one) but the number of people will be reduced before they start knocking on doors. The other thing to keep in mind and I am not saying this is right or wrong just that you have to look at it from a mathematicians perspective the larger the data set the better for working with the math they use to do this sort of statistical analysis.

Don't underestimate the predictive nature of this stuff but guilty by statistical probability can have a real bad outcome once the process is hijacked by disingenous and intellectually dishonest people and interests. That is always the greatest enemy of freedom and the real problem that no one has yet been able to solve.

Am I the only one who missed the simple math ERROR in the beginning?    "If 20 people are involved per attempt that equals 414 terrorists..."

Um, basic math guys, I'm no higher math nerd, but 20 times 207 is 4,140 or ten times the initial number.

If the basis is errorneous, the rest of the shit shifts as well.     They should have spent a little more time on the MATH and less on the GRAPHICS.

That would also mean that 1 in 62,000 Americans is a terrorist according to the NSA.   That means most moderate sized cities in the US would have at least one person capable of committing an act that could maim or kill multiples of people.    Heck, the rate of mental deficiency in the US is higher than that.    And Washington has the cream of the crop sent to them each year by the states where they are wined and dined and feted and learn how to improve their skill via something as simple as a piece of paper.

Yep and the probability is also wrong should be 0.001601802252% not 0.0001601802252%, secondly it is not a mariginal probability either, it is just a plain probability there are no intersections involved. Also it is 1 in 62430 people rounding up to be consistent with the rounding of the probability. Whoever did the infographic was either not a math person or one of them first year college kid types trying to apply something they learned in school here to make a point.

There is another math error in there. From nowhere in the provided information can it be inferred that P(X|~A)=.01. One must notice that P(X|A)+P(X|~A) is not ncessarily equal to one (though we do have P(X|A)+P(~X|A)=1 and P(A|X)+P(~A|X)=1).

Enough with the horseshit about Tea Party and OWS.

Tea Party= Stop the corruption and spend less.

OWS = Stop the corruption and spend more...on us.

The second point negates any common ground of the first.

Sat, 10/05/2013 - 09:38 | 4025386 falak pema
falak pema's picture

OWS = stop all corruption and break down the financial system, by taxing the 1% more and shutting down the Derivatives Wall. Taxing the rich more will AUTOMATICALLY cut down on financialista MALINVESTMENT of PRIVATE OLIGARCHS who run Pax Americana.

You can then spend MORE on social protecton and good education/infrastructure by spending less on big government, big business, big arms and all the rest.

Replace big oil by big renewables and more good EROEI type investment in fossils.

You make that trade off very binary; its not what the OWS stands for.

Just remember the USA's greatest years were the 50s, times of high taxation and it NEVER killed innovation then. So why should it now?

More on that here (even if its published in BI the facts have some pertinence even for ZH readers). Not all of ZH is brain dead.

Why Americans Should Be Thankful For Income Tax - Business Insider

Not saying I buy this 100%, but I do agree that progressive taxation is the sign of a balanced society with a vibrant middle class and a moving social elevator. We are losing that in first world with current NWO run by Oligarchy and its the young people who will hurt most. OWS is a young people's movement.

How about just letting everyone decide what they want to use as money (gold backed something or the other, comodilty backed bills....)?  The main point is that if the gov't-central bank cannot create money out of thin air they will quickly dry up and blow away.  Taxing more won't cut it.  The tax laws in the 50's had mega loop holes.  The rich did not pay those high tax rates.  Less gov't-not more.   More money for "good" education?......more money does not equal better education.  Do not trust the State to do the right thing.  Less gov't-not more.

Less government not more; I agree to avoid both Oligarchy and state fascism. But right now we have the worse of both worlds as its hegemonic.

We need more citizen participaton less mindless consumerista knee jerks, that make us suckers for the transnational Oligarchies.

It all begins with PEOPLE taking over from Oligarchs and ensuring neither Anarchy nor Elitist Fascism.

Those are the two historically proven extremes of social decadence to be avoided.

We need more responsible citizenry; not less. More election and control of honest leaders, by the people for the people not less. WHATEVER THAT TAKES, hopefully peacefully, but if not...history can repeat.

seriously there must be some comic value in this:

You Might Be A Terrorist (Redneck) If:

You own more than one pressure cooker.

You paid off a debt of $5000 or more using cash you had buried in your backyard.

You think the government is spying on you.

You get phonecalls from foreign countries where terrorists operate, the conversation is short, and usually ends with you saying, "don't call me here again.."

you bought twenty pounds of ammonium nitrate, and you live in an apartment. (they will turn this one over to DEA after they find out you have a pot plant in a grow box)

you have a complete set of Thomas Brothers maps for the major cities, and you used to be a truck driver.

you served honorably in the military and you think war is wrong.

you volunteered for a non-profit organization with the phrase "tea party" in their name.

you refer to your political status as "used to be" a Democrat/Republican, but you aren't either right now.

When you are weak appear strong, when you are strong appear weak. ~ Sun Tzu from The Art of War

Applied to this discussion:

When you are a terrorist appear to be a non-terrorist. When you are not a terrorist appear to be a terrorist.

When you are following the rules appear to be not following the rules. When you are not following the rules appear to be following the rules.

When you are thinking independently appear to be not thinking independently. When you are not thinking independently appear to be thinking independently.

The result (happening now):

The innocent are being targeted leading to reduced credibility of the machine.
The guilty are being supported leading to reduced credibility of the machine.
