Who Works The Most?
"Work hard, play hard" is the adage often put forward to encourage that work-life balance so many find hard to come by. But judging from the time spent on daily activities, it would appear there is one message for the Japanese and North Americans... move to France!

Now that would be a HUGE fucking mistake _ ten minutes into listening to some french dude complain about his croissant and you'd empty the clip into your own mouth
Way back in the 60's when I lived in the UK it was apparent just why the French needed, I mean needed, to spend so much time on personal grooming. The women had hair all over their legs and in their armpits, and nobody bathed. That's why they invented perfume and chic clothing, to cover up the character defects. But they did have good teeth. Unlike the English.
And they absolutely hated any English speaking peoples.
No wonder I remember them so fondly.
Try speaking some French to them - it works wonders. In fact, it works wonders anywhere (except English speaking countries) to make an effort to speak even just a bit of the native tongue: it's amazing how the natives feel all respected and shit when one tries to reach out to them rather than just expecting them to reach out to you.
Just sayin' ...
(PS: Dunno where u got your impression about French women. Certainly then ones I've crossed paths with in the UK mostly stood out for being far more tastefully and elegantly set-up than most of the local women)
I did try to speak to them. I slowed down my words, raised my voice, shook my hands all over, got visibly agitated, made little spittle balls and they still didn't understand English.
Then of course, when I'm in the UK practice my German.
And lemme tall ya' back in the late 50's and early 60's they fucking LOVED it!
Humming the Horst Wessel song....

BTW, What the fuck does one do for 11 hours of persoanl care?
Getting the tilt on their Beret just right in their Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Vine profile pic of course. That, and lots of cigarettes. Nasty, French cigarettes.
+1 for trying to translate by talking louder.....lmao if I haven't done that myself a few times....
WHERE IS THE LOUVRE?
Sleep? lol
Thanks for the laugh, Knukles.
Stupid catalog of prejudices on the French.
Try to travel a bit ...
In France , they play with their willey...
DaddyO
Shave their legs and arm pits. That was my experience. But they are beautiful and when dressed up, are tres elegant.
Yeah, French women have hairy legs while British and Irish fat trash is gorgeous.
Fucking moron.
Swedish night clubs versus English clubs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-J9ZpQYW8s
The better looking English girls have Scandinavian gene pools going way way back.
Only because they were stolen from us by the Vikings hoards back in the day so you have it the wrong way around my friend!
Your Swedish nightclub looks like it's for dikes only.
In a region of England there's an entire dialect called Yorkshire which has roots in both Old English and Old Norse. If you listen carefully to somebody speaking it you can notice that the cadence is very similar to Swedish.
@knukles
“And they absolutely hated any English speaking peoples.”
Another cliché.
It is not or true, or in any case no more true:
Have a look at the last figures of BBC Globescan.

"Now that would be a HUGE fucking mistake _ ten minutes into listening to some french dude complain about his croissant and you'd empty the clip into your own mouth"
It would take less than one minute if said complaining were done in mime language, and less than 10 seconds if he was also wearing one of those black and white striped shirts.
If Hollande speaks, you need to use Tachyons for the explanation, but the principle still holds.
I saw lots of people seriously busting their asses working when I was in Korea (2012). 60 hour + workweeks.
I've worked crazy long hours both in my home country (Portugal) and a bit while in the UK.
In between I lived many years in Holland, where working more than 8h is actually frowned upon.
All I can say is that in Holland my total productivity was way higher than in Portugal or when I did long hours in the UK. In fact, most of the time I lived in the UK I would do my best to just work 8h/day while my colleagues bust their asses out for 10h+, with the interesting result that I usually delivered earlier and better quality work (which is why management didn't squirm much about me working just the 8h).
Or putting things in another way, working hard (i.e. long hours) is the opposite of working smart (i.e. efficiently). The whole philosophy of working long hours actually promotes lower efficiency.
That's why in China they crank it up to 12 hour days and install worker safety nets.
Where in Portugal are you from, Acet?
Your boss is't smart enough to know if you are working smart or long so he picks long.
@ DoChenRollingBearing I've been reading that a lot of S. Koreans are cashing out on their tech holdings and moving back into the country/rural and getting involved in agriculture. I guess there's a big shortage in the agricultural growing business over there.
Am I wrong? Thanks
Yen Cross! Hey, I just went there that one time. I don't have any idea. Some of their bearing factories are set up in smallish cities. I did see some ag land, but, I really could not offer a decent answer.
All of the guys I worked with were serious, 'bust your ass' city guys, each handled the export orders for their companies.

Well done, those who appropriate your surplus labour are at best merely satisfied with the riches you've provided for them.
But you know, if you really put your back into it and stopped wanting to be paid so much, they could be even richer.
You selfish bastards, try harder!
Promoting an alternative are ye? Yes indeed, everything was just peachy for labor under that one. There's always someone, somewhere, who would make the current situation worse with their grand illusion. The state can always supplant the appropriators and force us where, when, and how we put our back, our "surplus labor", into our living, and for hell of a lot less of its scrip. No thanks. But by all means, you go forward, tovarisch.
Not a big fan of Frog or escargot...
Doesn't stating your food preference make you feel so righteous and morally better?
Fucking moron.
I love frog
Bear you are Simon Black { incognito} I like you!
I don't like snails either. I'd rather have fast food.
WORK! you fucking debt slaves! Keep up with the Rodriguez's! Buy your kiddies a Kindle and iPhone and get yourself a mcmansion and a range rover for the princess.
I want to see MORE stories posted MORE often!
WORK god dam it!
If there were statistics on how many times you could hit yourself with a hammer in the head and stay conscious and the MSM promoted it as a contest among nations about who has the better "hammer ethic," there would be legions of mindless sheep lining up to prove they can last the longest. Propaganda. Works.
Goldman Sachs sucks.
I work 5,
Personal care 9
And Leisure 10.
Blankfein was probably shipped some shit statistics by his employees.
Well I mean the Chart comes from the Joooooos at Goldman Sachs so shouldn't they be at the top of the list????????..........
I agree with the dude about Koreans working crazy hard.
I know for a fact that the average WORKING American busts his butt more than Canadians and WAY more than the Aussies.
Or... don't move! And just try to increase your economic efficiency a little bit more, for example. While staying relaxed all the time, of course. You could also make less crap maybe... and/or focus on making things you really need. Like baguettes.
Drop out of the system and you'll have a LOT more leisure time. Suck on the teet while the beast is still breathing and use your time to get ready.
And to get high, of course.
What's personal care? Is that like manscaping?
This chart is wrong. There should be only two divisions. Work and Everything Else.
Depressed people and recovering addicts do sleep more than healthy happy people.
But the women are hotter in Denmark. Lot less hairy too.
True. Denmark and Sweden. Smoking hot.
Finland and Norway not as much. Some of the Baltic countries are good too like Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. Ducth women are pretty hot but the Dutch language is not attractive.
The people in Denmark are pretty nice too. One of my favorite European people. The French are not so bad. The same old divide and conquer BS. My friend likes all Europeans except the Swiss and is not crazy about the Dutch.
I work 3, personal care 12
CFTC retail investor protection department?
I am from Krautland and I visited the south west of France twice this year. French people are the most friendly, polite and relaxed I can imagine. Women in general are beautiful. Most folks are smiling and happy. Great beaches (accessible by road and no parking fees), nice landscape, and not many cops. Delicious, reasonably priced food, of course. God lives in France.
What about the ones you weren't paying?
Those have either migrated to Germany for a free lunch or become pro-war socialists
France is a cool place to visit. Totally fucking cool. Loire Valley, Nimes, Carcassonne, St Michel, to name a few places. Been to Paris a couple of times and each visit was pleasurable (thieves/pickpockets do hang out at Metro stations (not unique to Paris, of course), so be careful!).
Thumbs up to France.
Many (not all of course) people seem to associate Paris AS France. Of course this is not the case. The country is really quite a lovely place. But its easy to feel this way about many locations when just visiting.
Never had a problem with the French on any visit. I do NOT speak french at all, and its hard to hide my American accent.
A "bonjour" here and there goes a long way. Well, longer than, say, "do you take dollars?", lol.
Also, a trip to Omaha Beach and surrounding area might just cause some nay-sayers to reconsider.
You are rignt. The French do have faults, but they understand symbols: American representatives are invited every year in France for the remembering of D-Day June 6, 1944.
On the other hand, the 5,000 sailors of the French Navy who died for US Independence at the battle of the Chesapeake are still waiting for their memorial in Washington…
And I have never heard that French representatives were formally invited to the celebrations of the Yorktown victory (where half of the fighters were French soldiers led by the Comte de Rochambeau), or at the 4th of July celebrations …
And then there is that little statue in New York Harbor.
I suppose some cynics would argue that the French did not help in the American Revolution because they wanted to help the Colonists but because they were anti-British. That's imperialism for ya!
But, they helped nonetheless.
@Motorhead
It may be right (except for Lafayette), but the same cynics could argue that:
- For WW1, while France was fighting since August 1914, the United States entered in the war only in April 1917 (more than 2 years and 8 months later), not to rescue the French (who by the way were not at all defeated in 1918), but because, President Wilson judged it was the US national interest to do it in response to the declaration by Germany of a total submarine war against US ships.
But, they helped nonetheless.
- For WW2, while France was fighting since September 1939, the United States of America entered in the war only the 11 December 1941 (2 years and 3 months later). And it was only in response to the declaration of war against them by Germany and Italy, after Pearl Harbor. The Americans didn't even think of "saving the French", they came to Europe because it was better to fight their enemy in Europe than in America.
But, they liberated nonetheless.
I forgot to add:
... And most Fench are still deeply grateful for that. It is why they invite American representatives every year in France for the remembering of D-Day June 6, 1944.
NEVER get emotional.\

Bear, knows his trade,
I like to sleep 10 hours - fuck you Goldman.
What do they mean by work? I have been in Asia almost ten years and they always say the Asians work harder but I say they are just at work longer, not that they are doing anything, if your boss is there then you should stay,a F-up culture thing. So the Japanese night be there 10 hours but not be doing that much, they take forever to do something anyway man its frustrating.
I worked in a factory in Japan and was the only American to have ever worked there at the time. 6 days a week, 10 hours a day for the 60 hour workweek. The owner came in one Saturday looked at me and in Jinglish proudly stated, "In America, Saturday a holiday. In Japan, everyone work." He was proud of that.
The thought immediately crossed my mind, "Yea well, we get done by Thursday what it takes you guys till Saturday to accomplish." I didn't say that outloud, but it was the truth. They take a long time to get something done, alright.
Yeah, remember in the 1980s or so, every swinging Richard thought that the Japanese way of doing business was the shit. They had their MITI and all these other "groovy" things and it was being taught in US schools. They were also buying up all kinds of stuff (IIRC, Rockefeller Plaza being one of them). And, of course, it would be a great idea if we all learned Japanese.
Now look.
You can find some more data about who works more here:
http://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/employment/average-annual-working-time_20752342-table8
It's not sorted but you can download the excel and do it yourself.
What's interesting is that Greece who is constanlty beaten as a lazy country is third or fourth every year.
Here also sortable for 2012 http://stats.oecd.org/Index.aspx?DataSetCode=LEVEL
I want to while away my day as a cafe lounging, sidewalk spitting boulevardier checking out the ladies leg sweaters.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/07/31/us-france-workhours-idUSBRE96U13820130731
The work week famously limited by law to 35 hours has become a distant dream for many French, as executives chase ever tougher deadlines and the rank and file look to make ends meet with overtime.
French workers put in an average of 39.5 hours a week in 2011, continuing a steady rise in the decade since the 35-hour work week was introduced and not far behind an EU average of 40.3 hours, according to a labor ministry report.
That still puts them behind the British on 42.4 hours and the Germans on 41.
But, defying some foreign stereotypes of a nation shy of hard work, the French work longer hours than the Belgians, Finns, Dutch, Italians, Irish and Danes.
French middle-management are above worked 44.1 hours.
I would contest the Canadian figures. My thinking wasn't that they worked that hard.
The most important fact about the Canadians was their politeness, right up until they blew up and became hopelessly irrational.
I much prefer New Yorkers, you know where you stand and you can move from there….
Does EBT card shopping and welfare paperwork, and court apearances and or jail time count as work? Also, how about gaming the system time, shoplifting, stealing, selling drugs, can they be counted as gainful work under this type of graphing?
Do hookers and getting drunk, and or high count as leisure or personal time?
THis could change Americas ranking on this graph.
So what is the difference between leisure and personal care?
What was the data base that was used for this chart? (citing Goldman Sac just "don't cut it" in the "creditability department")
And why pick on France, how about Germany, Denmark and Norway????
Tyler this is really a bullshit trolling article, wtf are you doing?
Do you work to rest or rest to work?
