Man Who Lit Himself On Fire On National Mall, Has Died

Tyler Durden's picture

In a tragic development, the unidentified man who set himself on fire on the National Mall at about 4:30 p.m. on Friday in between the Air and Space Museum and the National Gallery, and who sustained burns to 80% of his body, has died. AP reports: "A District of Columbia police spokesman says a man who set himself on fire on the National Mall has died his injuries. Officer Araz Alali says the man died Friday night at a hospital where he had been airlifted. He says the man was so badly burned that he will need to be through DNA and dental records. The man poured a can of gasoline on himself in the center portion of the mall Friday afternoon. He then set himself on fire, with passing joggers taking off their shirts to help douse the flames."

Oddly enough, the deceased self-immolator was conscious and coherent enough in the aftermath of the incident to thank passers by for putting out the flames before being taken to hospital:

The man reportedly thanked the joggers before he was taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center by a U.S. Park Police helicopter that landed on the Mall.

Fire department spokesman Tim Wilson said the man suffered life-threatening injuries, but was conscious and breathing at the scene.

Authorities are now investigating the man's motives.

As AP adds, Police are investigating the man's possible motives for doing so. They will hardly find any, as the last thing the Obama administration needs right now is to start explaining why D.C. has become ground zero for America's own Arab Spring. Especially, if in a country in which fomenting class and social hatred once again boils down to racial characteristics.

Some more recollections by observers:

"I saw like a spark," she said. "Then he just went completely up in flames."

"Some heads up joggers put out the flames," she said. "A guy took his shirt off, ran over, you know, start trying to beat the flames out. A couple other joggers also stopped to help."

"It's very shocking," she said. "It's horrifying. Literally watching this guy go up in flames. There was not really anything anybody could do."

A question has emerged: was it an act meant to be documented, and if so why:

Katy Scheflen, a furloughed civil rights attorney in the Justice Department, said she stopped because she saw "a guy with a tripod set up."

Scheflen said another man, who she thought the tripod with a camera was filming, then took a red can of gasoline, poured it over his head.

"At that point we didn't know what was going, maybe it was some sort of stage protest," Scheflen said. "And then he set himself on fire and went up in flames," she said. "Whoosh."

Scheflen said the presence of a mounted camera gave her the impression "he was aware something was about to happen. Otherwise he was filming nothing but a guy standing there."

"It was obviously an intentional act," she said. "Somebody has a video of the whole thing."

Scheflen said the man may have said something beforehand “but it was nothing intelligible.”

And speaking of the seasons, in Tunisia it was Mohamed Bouazizi's self-immolation on December 17, 2010 (and subsequent death 18 days later) that sparked the Arab Spring reaching as far as Saudi Arabia and China. One wonders: will the death of the so far unidentified man lead to anything more than even more vocal and relentless fingerpointing at assorted highly politicized media echo chambers.

Yep, almost 50 years to the day of the peak number of occurrences of those immolations. I was a Navy UDT assigned to train the ARVN commandos on leave in Saigon as I transitioned to the MACV-SOG Phoenix program when I first saw one of those monks in September of 1963. It was quite a sight.

I'm wondering if any message he left has been officially suppressed. To do this not just in a public place, but on the national mall, it is intended to be a statement. Maybe he lives in DC, lost his job and wife or other stressors and is not political. But I'll bet he felt he had no control over his life and this was the only way to fight back, a last act of defiance.

ProTip: If you want to leave a final message, send it to multiple media outlets including online media.

No. It is political. How often does a man chose to self immolate in the United States as opposed to say Iran or China where self immolation is a clear, undeniable sign of political protest.

A out of work disturbed black mother shot shot yesterday by the whitehouse or DC police, a black man burns himself in front of congress on the mall today. Imolation takes serious anger. Possibly blacks are as uhappy as whites about where Obama is taking america but are more in conflict with themselves because they like Obama as a person. Sort of love Obama but internally hate what he is doing to us. Here is a message to blacks and whites: do not look to the government to solve our life problems, only we individually can do that, in the long term for every problem the government solves in our personal lives, they create many more, and erode our self reliance until we are dependant slaves. I am sorry for the suffering of this dispondant man.

F. Bastiat (not to be confused with the other ZH commenter Bastiat, who actually contributes comments reflecting his thoughts) is not capable of anything more than copying/pasting bumper sticker level, jingoistic talking points, and I doubt he's capable of actually understanding even those.

Additionally, he seems to think that posting identical or virtually identical comments several times to the same article makes him 'moar better'. (He probably would also equate the collaborative efforts of two 75 IQ idiots with that of an individual with an IQ of 150.)

This has been his pattern for quite awhile. While he didn't subject us to his usual parakeet squawking of 'Hussein Obama is a delusional marxist', he did shit all over this article with a flurry of 22 comments in 22 minutes, half of which were minor variations of "Liberals are lunatics".

http://www.zerohedge.com/search/user_comments?name=F.%20Bastiat

Alas, he must have pissed off someone, because apparently he's been given the boot. While I am disinclined to see anyone shitcanned for expressing their opinions, I find it hard to believe that someone exhibiting no more evidence of cranial activity than autonomous bodily functions governed by a rudimentary brain stem is even capable of forming or holding an opinion.

I can't say that I'll miss him, but I do hope that he remembers to breathe.

I think you are on to something there.  I know a black person fairly well.  Very nice, honest and smart but they bought into O.  I can understand why.  Even if he is a disaster - most of them well stay behind them.    I don't agree with it but I somewhat understand it.  People identify with their group.  The left goes on and on about multiculturalism but they go out of their way to create more barriers.

This person I know, I have avoided them since O.  I have a few more distant relatives who actually voted for him that I may never speak to again.  I can understand why black people would vote for him.  White liberals, especially young white liberals, who support him?  No sympathy.  If they were lighting themselves on fire then I would almost would have no sympathy.

This man and the woman with the child yesterday - very sad.  I don't care if what their skin color was or who they voted for.   Very sad.  The only thing sadder is our military and Al See Eye Ah Duh backing Al Qeada and other murderers in killing innocent people.

Obviously the media is selectively ignoring this story and the one from the day before because they see no benefit to the current regime they have propped up by talking about a man self immolating himself at the National Mall or the DC gestapo killing a mother with her child. It's OK though. Plenty of gallows for them when the time comes. Judging by the actions of the DC gestapo lately (kill first and ask questions later), that time won't be too far off.

How do you expect people to live when they have no money.  The only alternative is death.  Some men are too proud to go to their children or relatives.  And again, after dating for a while, it is quite amazing how many men are content, sitting back, waiting for their parents to die, to collect their long awaited inheritance.  They spend hours talking about which sibling deserves it, which do not, how much there is to spread around and how they have a right to it.  That is a sad commentary in itself.  These men do not take part in the discussion about a failing economy due to this very reason - an inheritance, sometimes only 100 grand, but it is enough for them to check out of reality and count the days until their parent's money is in their checking account.

Suicide stuff from Wiki:   (although this is likely a political/some statement event)

Globally, as of 2008/2009, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death

Rates of suicide have increased by 60% from the 1960s to 2012

For every suicide that results in death there are between 10 and 40 attempted suicides

In the Western world, males die three to four times more often by means of suicide than do females, although females attempt suicide four times more often.  This has been attributed to males using more lethal means to end their lives.

This difference is even more pronounced in those over the age of 65 with tenfold more males committing suicide than females.

Hopefully people can stay aware of how the race card is always played by the PTB when nations are crumbling and not participate in that. Unfortunately, when times start getting bad, people start looking for scapegoats.

It isn't too surprising that this is starting in the black population; they've been one of hardest hit groups from the Banking and Political Scammers....But it's spreading. People should take it out on the people that are most responsible if they must, not themselves or communities.

I saw Obama's speech about the need to end the shutdown so that (30% of) government workers can get their paychex and pay their bills.  Are they really living that closely to the edge all the time?

I guess when you think you can never lose your job and that your pay will always increase every year then you don't have to worry about saving jack shit for if/when the money stops coming in.

I saw this paragidm first hand when mother fuckers (one of them out ranking me!!!) would come up to me and ask for money. As if I was going to lend any to people who couldn't manage now, as if they were going to take care of themselves next month AND pay me back. Motherfuckers going broke by the 2nd and the 16th? Not taking that credit risk.  There's a reason half a dozen payday lenders are all set up on every street coming off of military bases.

Government "Workers" in D.C. though.  What a joke.  Why should honest citizens from Idaho or Alabama, or Nebraska have to bear the burden of supporting them?

Chris Dorner was odd.  He seemed to be just a F up AA hire in So Cal.  He was too fat to be a cop.  They have to have at least some fitness and he could barely run 100 yards. There was a video of him "running" and the cops were telling his he was too fat. Young guy who was way out of shape.  He probably had high blood pressure already.

Dorner's other problem is blacks can no longer play the race card in So Calif.  Latinos outrank blacks now in So Cal as the chosen minority.  Latinos, especially Mexicans, do not humor or put up with blacks like guilty liberal whites.   Even the Crips and The Bloods have said that Latino drug gangs want to wipe them out.  Mexicans in So Cal do not like blacks. There was a black couple walking near LA and Mexicans starting shooting at them.  They had no ties to any gang.

Once Dorner got fired from PD - thin blue line PD cop gravy train - his prospects were slim and none.  He also had that So Cal celeb thing going where eveybody wants to be a star or get their own reality show.

it's fitting isn't it?

that this should happen in our nations capitol, home to what is quickly becoming the largest three ring freak show satanic circus of the macabre the world has ever seen.

how many grave yards has Washington filled over the past 20 years? how many lives ruined, how many hearts, minds and bodies destroyed because of them?

who was this man? an Obama supporter betrayed? a veteran who was given prescription poison to help dull the pain of fighting in a war that has no moral purpose, no just cause and no end? a father, who thanks to the government sponsored and enabled obliteration of the middle class in America can no longer find a way to support his family?

the possibilities are endless, but I have little doubt that the he choose that place to preform his final act on this earth for a very specific reason.

because that place is evil and those who dwell within are afflicted by evil and insanity, as evidenced when just yesterday they all cheered an unarmed American citizen, a women and a mother being shot down like a rabid dog in the street.

this is what our capitol has become, a place where the powerful can revel in spreading misery, death and destruction.

I don't know what extreme of emotions would cause one to make there final statement one of such violence, rage and pain but I pray this mans soul has found peace in the after life.

a sing of the times and a taste of what's to come.

The absolute majority of people will not challenge their beliefs. They're almost set in stone. Having been personally touched by suicide, I can say with absolute certainty that it turns your world upside down & challenges ALL beliefs. It's not so much as the method, although this poor man made a very bold statement by his method & even more so the location. What drives a person to such extremes is the loss of all hope & the feeling of being trapped with no way out. They just want the pain to end. I cannot possibly imagine the physical pain of immolation, but I'd bet the ranch it did not compare to his emotional suffering that drove him to it.

There's some fucking hope for Obama and he can keep the change.

Tasers are for torture, and they don't torture in DC.

Well you have to do what cop say,

First they told her to stop at the first check-point and she fled, and they shot at her, well she tried to do a u-turn when she saw the check-point, and when she did the u-turn they drew their guns and she panicked, remember her family is COP, so this woman doesn't fear COP, ... and now shes dead.

Then when they drove her car off the road, they politely asked for the baby and she refused, and then they ripped the baby from the mothers arms, and then they blew her fucking face off.

The story here folks is do what cops say the first time,

Secondly, obviously somebody has orders down from the TOP "DONT KILL BABYS", ... so my guess is that's the next thing to watch for, ... baby killing in DC by cops.

But for now it appears that its ALL good to kill anyone anytime without a reason, ...

***

ON the subject of 'fire man' eyewitnesses saw others dump gasoline over his head and ignite him, clearly the man was drugged as the joggers said he was grateful to be saved. Note in the photos the 'red gas can', ... come on folks can you imagine walking around with a red gas can? where were the fucking cops?

Fuck yes, everyday is 'killing season' on blacks,..

Hell yes Alexis had every right to be frustrated, and Doerner at the hypocrisy,

Why is the white-establishment surprised to see this new killer, the ex-cop, and/or soldier that goes mad?

I mean the white-cop lives by the gun, and kills by the gun, and its not news but a black-man, ... he does this and oh my god the slaves have gone off reservation.

Long ago the manager of RAMPART said to me "the downfall of the USA will be the inability to assimilate the black man post civil war". Rampart was a secret division of the LAPD whose sole job was to shoot black-men.

NEWSFLASH: Fear of armed goons is plenty of motive to flee a traffic stop or car accident. There are hundreds of things that could motivate someone to light themselves on fire in America today.
