Guest Post: It's Definitive - We've Reached Peak Jobs
Submitted by Charles Hugh-Smith of OfTwoMinds blog,
The U.S. has reached Peak Jobs--at least the sort that can support a household.
There has long been a quasi-magical belief in the U.S. that capitalism's intrinsic dynamic of creative destruction will always create more jobs than it destroys. The evidence is compelling that this belief is no longer reality-based.
Please examine these charts of employment, keeping in mind that only full-time jobs can support households and pay sufficient taxes to fund entitlements paid by payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare) and pay enough income taxes to support the rest of government.
Full-time jobs: the number of full-time jobs is essentially unchanged from 1999 while the U.S. population has increased 28%.

Full-time employment as a percentage of the U.S. population:

Full-time employment per capita: i.e. employment adjusted for population growth.

Full-time employment and Social Security beneficiaries: the ratio of full-time workers to Social Security beneficiaries has already fallen to 2-to-1, and the bulk of the Baby Boom has yet to reach retirement age.

Part-time employment: many of the jobs added over the past four years are part-time jobs that do not generate enough income to support a household or the government. Including these alongside full-time jobs is thus deceptive: 1 in 5 jobs is part-time.

Self-employment: drifting down to new lows as a percentage of non-farm employment.

The topping pattern in full-time jobs is obvious, as is the rise of part-time work and the slow decline of self-employment as a meaningful contributor to employment.Any one of these trends could be disputed, but together they make a definitive case that the U.S. has reached Peak Jobs--at least the sort that can support a household.

It is not that capitalism is failing – It is that government intervention into capitalism is failing.
Except for the governmental intervention to save the collapsing parasitic banking sector... that was a huge success.
Yes, enriching paper-pushers everywhere. Certainly we can solve all this with moar financial "products" of mass destruction.
So it's all down hill from here.
"that capitalism's intrinsic dynamic of creative destruction will always create more jobs than it destroys."
But it cannot create more real jobs than government destroys. Government's "intrinsic dynamic" is that of creating phony-baloney jobs at the expense of real jobs.
That's the crazy thing, government doesn't even have to lift a finger to destroy the work of job creators, they can merely say a few words and do the damage. It's even worse if they are getting paid to do the destruction, and then extorting their lifestyle out of the very same public they are hindering. It's the political class that is the true enemy of the working class... That is if we want to talk about classism and modernista voodoo mathematical mumbo-jumbo economics.
"Under Capitalism, man exploits man while under Communism, it's the other way round."
-Old Russian Joke.
.
Guess what? The joke is on all of us...they own and control both sides. Each and everytime
The jokes on you, I don't need this BS system to survive. I was raised shooting and eating what I could kill. If I didn't kill something, I didn't eat very well.
Another telling sign is that unemployment claims have dropped to post-recession lows. Check out the chart and see what happens next whenever claims bottom out:

What happens whens you get forced to move to alaska to hunt and survive. I'll tell ya what happens, you start to grow old and freeze up in your tracks, you have a bad year and loose some weight, you turn sixty and relize this life style is for the birds, then you get Sudden Aging Diesase and lonely and want to be alone till the quick and sudden end snaps you back and you ask, what did I do with the time? Now you're doing the Tim Mcgraw special with the extra high collar and perhaps reaching falseto, and we know that doesn't well.
You need to understand, most of those hunters will not survive the first two winters. After that nature will balance out and find a way. That's how it always is. Besides I don't plan on being anywhere near AK. I'll be in Montana.
great! Montana. You are downwind of only 1 reactor...so yo will probably make it 1.5 years....tops.

There will be no 'surviving' a collapse scenario....realizing this logic, the only course of action is to get a sailboat and try to get the south pole....or pretty darn close.
That is fine, I'm perfectly capable of accepting my own inevitable fate of dying. I am at peace with my own mortality. I do not fear it or despise it.
Unlike the rest of humanity that seems to live in this fantasy realm where all of these trappings are nothing more than distractions from their inevitable end of life, I have no ilusions that I'm in the process of dying at this very moment and that every breathe I draw is one less on that clock called my lifespan.
I think a lot of the issues in societies around the world can be attributed to the fact that most humans can not seem to accept their own mortality, and death frightens them into believing all sorts of delusions and fabricates purpose from meaningless tragedy.
My philosophy amounts to 'outliving the bastards'.
I always hope that people such as yourself would consider it also.
It's even worse if they are getting paid to do the destruction, and then extorting their lifestyle out of the very same public they are hindering.
Gawd you people and your insane obsessions with gov...Do your pea-brains ever broach any other subject?

Sure, we could talk about competitive powerlifting. I deadlift over 650lbs. We can talk about physics, my first degree is in it. My Master's is in analytical economics, and I specialize in multi-lateral trade and cultural diversion of international trade topics in my professional field.
What do you have going for you other than being a pea-brain idiot on ZH? Posting links to fallacy ridden propaganda pieces?
What do you have going for you other than being a pea-brain idiot on ZH? Posting links to fallacy ridden propaganda pieces?
Since you've obviously read the Oxford study, go ahead and explain the fallacies.
You can claim anything you want on the internet but if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck...
Unlike you I don't think people owe me any sort of explanation for anything. I have demonstrated my capabilities numerous times over the years here, and many of these people here know me from other places and forums.
Anything else from me you will not get unless you are civil, or pay me. I didn't spend all of that money for the stupid pieces of paper just to hear myself talk. I expect to get paid for my thoughts and time. That's sort of what an economist does, he get's paid to think.
Posting links to fallacy ridden propaganda pieces?
Oh look, Nid makes a baseless claim and then rather than pointing out even a single example - fallacy ridden afterall - instead takes the time to explain why he doesn't have to back up his claims.
Brill work'
Here let me take time out from my work to comment and laugh in your face.
That asshole that wrote that comment has a book out that is right up the alley of the article. That is fallacy number 1.
Any one can act and think on behalf of a clown and be handsomely paid. You must know that it is easier for a camel to walk thru the eye of a needle, than a rich man make it to heaven. Have you no lines to hide? Can you drink and talk sober, or do the animal spirits come out you, and take over the conversation?? One look would tell, and one hook could sell your dreams down the river of adventure.
"Any one can act and think on behalf of a clown and be handsomely paid."
What a coincidence...that is EXACTLY the type of situation I am currently looking for, particularly the "handsomely paid" part. Please elucidate for those of us who would like to go into that field of work.

So what you're telling us is that you are a big hairless ape who competed in the more advanced ape version of a pissing contest (moving weight without actually doing anything productive with it) and that you are a REALLY SMART and strong hairless ape who worked in a field that did absolutely NOTHING to advance the human condition and you produced NOTHING but more charts and fancy term papers for the elite who control the world to the detriment of real humans.....not elite hairless apes.
Good for you, Koko. Here's you're banana. Go move that big 650lb rock over there.
Damn you, I just splashed the banana all over my beloved X32.
You seem to think I'm here to benefit you. That is the problem all of you morons that can't accomplish half of what I have in less than 35 years. You think you know all of this shit, but in reality you're walk talking contradiction of idiocy. The reality is that I'm not on this planet to make your life better, I'm on this planet to make my life and the lives of my children better. I don't care about your genome, and you shouldn't care about mine. That is the reality of it all. The rest of that social responsibility garbage is just that. It's garbage, because any of you turds would stab me for a meal after 3 days if you don't try eating me first. I can admit to being a hairless ape, and it doesn't bother me.
Sure, you can make jokes about me lifting weights, the difference between people whom lift and those that don't is the resolve and commitment to do something that requires sacrifice. That is why your genome is doomed to failure in the long run, it doesn't have the capacity for survival, and likely the only reason you exist is because some government somewhere stole from people like me to subsidize your existence.
I don't need to have jokes and witty comments to speak the truth. You can't even speak the truth with those things. The character of a human comes not from his sharp tongue, but rather from his lack of it. I speak the truth, you should learn how to do it as well. Otherwise your life will likely be short and very painful when you start having to actually work to survive. I can deadlift that weight, and I can move 400lbs all day, who is more likely to survive on the farm that we will all end up on in the next few years? The smart guy that started lifting to get ready for that sort of lifestyle while educating himself how to survive on the land, or the dipshit smart ass on the internet that hasn't done anything to prepare for the shift in lifestyle?
You're a moron, and so is everyone that thinks like you. It's only a matter of time before Mother Nature starts eating you for breakfast.
You obsess about government existing, I obsess about government disappearing.
I'm all for you having as much of whatever kind of government you want. I just don't want any part of it.
Why do you want to force your beliefs on others and deny them their choice? Is it because you BELIEVE your way is best or can you PROVE it is?
Are you down to start a 'salt march?' Mobilizing the entire world population seems to be the only viable solution.
Most people's brains are wired for survival in an ordered tribal or town setting.
They are uncomfortable being free and responsible for themselves.
Didn't know about the salt march. Thanks.
Re: They are uncomfortable being free and responsible for themselves.
Hence, government run by authoritarian leaders resulting in fascism which is the only system possible.
You obsess about government existing, I obsess about government disappearing.
Correction, I don't obsess about it at all.
Why do you want to force your beliefs on others and deny them their choice? Is it because you BELIEVE your way is best or can you PROVE it is?
My way? Lol let's not go there.
The thing you seem to be unaware of is that all countries have governments. Different governments are more or less representative of their people, it's the people's job to hold their government to accountability.
Saying you want government to simply disappear is goofy, if history is a guide - it won't happen. Would be nice if governments could just all disappear and no other concentrated power stepped into the vacuum (becoming another gov). Lots of things would be nice.
I don't give a fuck about representative government. Most people are as oblivious to why they do things as a jellyfish.
Although it would best for civilization if government disappeared, I didn't say it should or could. I support the separation of government and FORCE.
Religion is a belief system separated from force - government - and government is a belief system with no better claim on using force than religion. Its claim on force is only through the use of force.
Make it voluntary so you can suffer what you will. I prefer not to.
I don't give a fuck about representative government.
Generally tends to be better than the alternative.
I support the separation of government and FORCE.
How wonderful!
Make it voluntary so you can suffer what you will. I prefer not to.
OK, let me get my magic wand out...
Suicide is the only way out for you. The rest of humanity is working on moving towards something better.
"Employment rate" is a bullshit statistic anyway. What you need to look at is inflation-adjusted per-capita salary. If everyone is getting re-hired at minimum wage, you won't have a recovery even at maximum employment.
It's even easier than that. Just watch the percentage of GDP that is the G portion, if it's growing then the economy is actually getting crushed. The only way the economy is not getting crushed, is if the G is shrinking. It can exist with the inflationary Fiatscos indefinately as long as the G portion as a percentage doesn't grow past a certain point, and it does even better when it shrinks.
Believe it or not this is what Hayek and later Milton were saying. It's just that they were misinterpretted when the math douche bags started trying to apply what they were saying to politicians, and everyone know's that politicians are the worst self serving assholes on the planet. They will say anything for a dollar or a vote.
Fiatscos are still in the end immoral, as they allow the political class to manipulate and create wealth out of delusion. However that is the major fault with fiatsco's not so much the political class.
Re: immoral
So, inevitable.
You can tell the children from the adults by how they handle duplicity (immorality).
Duplicity, ask for it by name.
Morality is far broader topic than just basal duplicity, and only a simpleton would find compare people to children by their understanding of morality.
Likewise the idiots show who they are by not being to understanding that morality is the cornerstone of any successful and healthy society. Without morality there is little trust, and certainly no honesty. Both of which are required for the expectation of civility and the creation of a society.
Then again this is more of that high-brow shit you never learned in school, because you were too busy being cool, and chasing the next cool thing. Then again had you ever moved past your high-school mentality and learned something about the world you would know some of this.
Re: Likewise the idiots show who they are by not being to understanding that morality is the cornerstone of any successful and healthy society.
The REAL idiots are those who think the adults follow their morals. The cornerstone of any successful and healthy society is having lots of children following the adult's morals, while the adults screw the children and justify their actions with duplicititous words (aka bullshit).
Morals are what the adults use to manipulate the children with.
Duplicity, ask for it by name.
I follow my morals to the T. It's your fault if you do not. Only you can control what you do. I can stand and abide by it as long as you do not violate my principles.
That is the problem with you leeches, you can't understand personal responsibility and behave uncivilly because you merely assume that everyone else will do likewise. You are the creator of your own immorality. From the way you portray yourself to others, to the way you end up behaving with your lack of responsibility and disregard for civil behavior. Real adults assume personal responsibility and take morality as a matter of principle. Only the rebellious teenager thinks the way you do. Like I said, you are stuck in that high-school statist mentality. You are a child trapped in an aging body.
G as in gvt?
Yes sir.
Well with automation most likely
.
Capitalism is a fucking joke term. It was debt ponzi and money creation games. The cities have been built and now are dying.
Half of everything we own was created by schemes. Productiviity was shipped off to foreign lands.
Capitalism was once creative, but is only centered around profits and wealth. So corruption ensues and at all levels, because without true innovation and productivity the host slowly dies.
The elite know this and want to control the masses for what is next to come. They easily tagged us all with promises of prosperity so we would fight their wars of murder for more control to feed the wealth machine.
Capital(ism)... what, building a mount of ponzi money? But here's the rub, it only has value when when people will work or in the new parameters FIGHT FOR IT.
Re: Capitalism is a fucking joke term
+1 to your post, but it's not exactly a joke.
The word Capitalism is a good bullshit word used by the Red Team to manipulate their dumbasses.
Similar to how the word Liberalism (aka socialism) is a good bullshit word used by the Blue Team to manipulate their dumbasses.
Manipulating the dumbasses with bullshit is how the smart-n-savvy win. Words (bullshit) are very important.
Another good bullshit engineered word is 'homophobe' (to again, brainwash the people)
.
K, carry on...
What about heterophobia (which all gays seem to have) and androphobia (which all women seem to have)?
Re: It is not that capitalism is failing
I think when the natural winners won everything in the late 1800's, the natural losers asked the government for an intervention so the natural losers wouldn't die.
The fantasy of Libertarianism only works when everybody really IS above average making them all natural winners.
I disagree with some sort of "natural winner" narrative for our competition, but I completely agree that the concept of capitalism is laughable nonsense. Capitalism has a practical positive effect about as long as every other broke dick system humans have devised. Capitalism tends to, at least initially, tie in with our inherent desire for autonomy and natural sense of property rights (especially in the self). However, all these positive processes are hopelessly corrupted in short order.
Humans naturally desire to consolidate power and rent seek (competing is difficult, after all). Capitalism inevitably leads to entrenchment, consolidation of power, and rent seeking. Thus, in order to keep the free spirit of competition alive, the system needs a neutral and objective policeman. Unfortunately, this policeman (government) is never neutral nor objective. In short order, the policeman is corrupted to aide the entrenchment and consolidation of power... and even to collect the rents. This is the cycle of self interest... it happens with all economic systems... which is why they're useless as a lens to view the world... they simply don't explain anything... they're just labels we affix to things, typically long after the events have transpired to warrant the label (and we've moved onto something else).
"In short order, the policeman is corrupted to aide the entrenchment and consolidation of power"
Ah, but only by violating the Constitution, which the people are letting happen. If people simply once again understood and refused to grant government the power to corrupt the free market with cronyism ...
You're ignoring the most basic human traits, laziness and apathy. It's only when our lives are threatened that we practically become politically viable and seek to collectively bargain. The concept of a constitutional convention every ~20 years was but a pipe dream of our founding fathers. The reality is that humans do not want to live on the razor's edge of political strife at all times. We're not equipped mentally, nor physically, to deal with it. Instead, we choose to act in much larger cycles.
PS, the free market does not exist... please dispense with the notion... the only thing that exists is self interest and it manifests itself in many ways, most notably to avoid the normalization of profit (note: free market capitalism necessarily demands perfect competition, which ensures the normalization of profit; somehow, this benefit of capitalism only fleetingly spits up, seemingly randomly). This exists regardless of whether there is a market regulator. Further, it is practically impossible to determine when we have given the regulator too much or too little power. And, like all power, once consolidated, it will never be relinquished willingly (it's like a snowball rolling downhill). Again, every time humans run a trial of our economic system, it turns out the same... it is fundamentally flawed and humans haven't figured out the solution.
Capitalism may not be failing but it is reaching it's endgame as a viable structure around which every element of society can earn a living. The simple fact is that the great balance between capital and labor is over. Capital no longer needs labor to the extent that everybody can find employment at a livable wage. In fact, capital now often needs little or no labor.
Where this will all lead, nobody knows. It's easier to see where it will lead in the long term when fully automated factories could churn out enough goods for all of society. But we may see 20 or 30 or 50 years of chaos as everybody scambles to adjust to a world of continuously falling labor demand. In the short run everybody wants to protect their personal slice of the goodie pie and they will fight to do so.
The real cause of the collapsing US economy is the growing differential between production and consumption. Producing less than you consume is a short cut to poverty.
Exactly. Show me Capitalism in the US.... I sure don't see much from where I'm sitting.
where would you say there is or has been capitalism, anywhere? for how long?
The textbooks in my 3rd semester of college :)
IRL? Pretty much a hit or miss proposition and only in small communities for brief moments in time. You could consider Greece, once things started going truly off the rails, I suppose. It depends upon how you define Capitalism and quantify it.
An entire country running under a model of true Capitalism? Never.
Similar things can be said of true Communism.
Small communes, ... perhaps the American Indians, before small pox laden blankets became a high demand barter item?
"It is not that capitalism is failing – It is that government intervention into capitalism is failing."
Capitalism does not exist apart from humanity. Until people enact on it....it is simply a thought.....an imagining of some way to order things....a theory on paper. AND EVERY THEORY LOOKS GOOD ON PAPER......IN THEORY.
However, once you let irrevocably corrupt mankind touch and act upon ANY system of governance and/or economics.....it will fail. It only matters to the degree and the speed.
Just like the saying....."Guns don't kill people.....people with guns kill people." This is true. But capitalism can't fail either. Just people acting upon capitalism fail. And just like people don't need guns to kill each other.....people don't need capitalism to fail.....we have socialism and fascism and tribalism and communism and mutalism and monarchy and dicatatorship and on and on and on.
So stop with the stupid, blame the government meme. I thought we had a Constitution to protect our system of governance from ourselves and from without. But look how we have failed that.
Nothing man has touched or dreamed of ever lasts. It will all end in failure and ruin. America and Capitalism are no different.
We are NOT exceptional.
A system that demands infinite growth in a finite world is hard wired to fail
No households.
Gypsy Nation.
Time to buy a Winnebago and become a gypsy meth cook.
Seriously. The need for meth, coke, pot and smack are going to go through the roof as peoples' lives start to unwind before their eyes.
Sadly this is true. The very people who most need to preserve their dwindling resources to live off are the same people who blow it on drugs, booze and gambling in an attempt to escape reality.
The average person is not much interested in cutting back, living cheaply, learning to grow some vegetables or any other practical response.
Are you suggesting that HSBC is a BUY?
Burn that mother down. Down to the ground, with valium on the mound and in the sound.
Oh I love big government, just heard a presentation by Caltrans (state transportation commission) in which they were freaked out by the reality that gas consumption is down in CA 13 million gallons year over year!!
There primary fund source is of course gas tax, so their solution..........
More taxes, more fees, multiple level taxes, carbon taxes, inflation adjusted taxes, etc etc
They sited that 15 other states have already done this to increase transportation funds and CA was behind the curve!!!!!
LMOA
Re; Oh I love big government
Without Big-Road, the developers couldn't develop. If the developers can't develop, the amount of graft going to local political scum dries up, if the local political scum can't make a buck screwing the locals they'll stave to death.
I'm sure the KaLi state political scum understand that good government comes from having a well funding graft system, all the way from the local government to the federal government.
The problem of funding for Big-Road will be fixed. You can bet on that.
Half the time, I can't tell if I agree with or not, but on this one, there is no question, you got that 100% right!
Taxes will go up, more and more, without end!
Yeah, that is because FUCKING CONgress sold us out to the slave labor of the world. Not to be out done, Americans buy cheap shit from China on CREDIT>
The destruction of America is nearly complete.
Ross Perot warned us about this NAFTA/GATT bullshit...and the "giant sucking sound" it would cause.
Dude went real quiet didn't he? I wonder why.
It was all shits and giggles back then. He and his ideas were laughed at.
He was the last guy I voted *for* as opposed to just *against* the "other guy".
I doubt I'll bother voting anymore...feels kind of silly.
If there is anyone else on the ballot, no matter how minority or "crazy", consider voting for them. Then at least your protest of the sham elections is registered.
I suppose you're right.
A "none of the above" option would be awesome though.
If "none of the above" wins all of them clean out their desks and fuck the fuck off.
I'd suggest you not vote against anyone - because they are at the end of the day controlled by the same people - so you are validating their game of good cop bad cop.
Instead don't vote at all. The more of you who do that the more you expose the fraud that is masquerading as democacy
Remember the charts? I wasn't old enough to vote yet, but I thought it was odd how he was the only one actually discussing all these big numbers. He was a little quirky, but he seemed to be talking about real issues when the other guys were trying to win a popularity contest.
Yep. And they made fun of his charts, big ears and high voice. Politics in the US is conducted on a middle school level.
Or maybe his strategy was on a middle school level... a lot of good it did.
Didn't he get rich off government money?
Yup. Medical Sick Care billing I believe.
I didn't know it at the time, but his company (Electronic Data Systems) got the contract for the Secret Electronic Mortgage Society (MERS) to boot.
Need more immigrants

First Mobile, then Nomadic.
Would that we had reached peak bullshit, peak hypocrisy, and peak sanctimony, but there seems to be no limit to those
All out hubris. Crank that shit to 11.
"Please examine these charts of employment, keeping in mind that only full-time jobs can support households and pay sufficient taxes to fund entitlements paid by payroll taxes"
That may have been true at one time but how do you know where the people that have taken over the United States of America get their money or how they finance things?
Finances haven't worked the way the graphs imply for over 20 years.
q99
exactly...when the exorbitant privilege ends, as it will, the US government and all governments will have to return to taxes (as opposed to merely printing and borrowing) to make things happen. At that point the almight power of the State will be seen for what it is, limited by the real world ...of stuff. For now they rule the world with the power of control over the medium of exchange. In our world the medium of exchange has been confused with 'store of value'. This happens every few decades as it is the government's interest to have it that way.
In the coming monetary system I believe we will see a clear distinction between the functions of money. This will strip the power governments have away from the printer of the currency and deliver it to saver. When savers save in gold and other real things (gold is the best for hoarding as it hurts no one or no industry) The power of savings will return, at long last, to the savers.
This is called freegold.. iIt is a gold regulated system that controls the printer....finally.
Guess thats why LinkedIn is down 10% over the past few trading sessions...
Let's see what happened in 1999 that detroyed the remnants of capitalism? We had NAFTA signed in 1994, Gramm, Leach, Bliley, in 1999. We als set the precedent for "too big to fail when we bailed out LCTM . Oil started a straight line upward as far as cost, but more importantly the seed for destruction was sewn on 12/23/1913 with the foundation of the fed.
yes, if I remember correctly, wasn't Glass-Steagal also finally overturned?
That's what the Gramm, Leach, Bliley act did. In political speak it was called ...The Fianancial Sevices Modernization act. I like to call it the Fuck the American Citizen Over act.
But remember, it came clean.
That was just the final nail in the coffin, this game started about 150 years before that.
Re: this game started about 150 years before that.
Is there any other game that has ever existed?
The smart-n-savvy people screw the dumbasses for fun and profit. What other system has ever existed?
Release the Kraken Act
output per hour and productivity are up.. that's a good thing as long as you don't waste the hours gained doing useless things..which humans will do. that's the yang of this paradox. nature sure knows how to balance shit.
Yes, because they fired half of their employees and make the remaining half do all of the work. They are only investing in labor replacing technologies, so yes, productivity is up.
The population will inevitably demand socialism.
We'll see anti-free-trade sentiment. Fortified borders. Anti-immigrant outcries. "Tax-the-rich" class warfare nonsense. Cries for more government power. Legislation against "profiteering", "price-gouging" and "usury". Capital controls. Import quotas. Higher "minimum wages". More regulation. More cheap credit. Love of government...
And the playing of the patriotic-nationalist-flagwaving-"love-your-country"-support-"our"-troops card...
The only thing they won't try is...real capitalism!
We don't have free trade now. The 1% sold us out to enrich themselves. Can you open a business and ship widgets to China if you wanted to? You have to bribe the COMMIES in order to get access to their economy. That is not free trade.
Re; You have to bribe
Since when is a commission not free trade?
Since it is government involvement and sometimes a bribe won't do and you are outright blocked access to a market that pretty much has free access to your market.
Get rid of corporations....
They are the antithesis of free market capitalism....
All it takes is one additional word in the 14th amendment, the word being "natural"...
You mean national socialism? Failed after "1000" years.
Re: The only thing they won't try is...real capitalism!
Real capitalism is a fantasy of the semi-austistics who don't understand duplicity and manipulation.
Why would any smart-n-savvy people want competition when it's much more lucrative to create governments and monoplies to screw the dumbasses.
Capitalism and Socialism are words (bullshit) used to manipulate the semi-autistic idealists who can't comprehend that the smart-n-savvy people always cheat.
Peak Jobs is good, no?
now that is some Change We Can Believe In.
This post brought to mind this quote...
The Government should create, issue, and circulate all the currency and credits needed to satisfy the spending power of the Government and the buying power of consumers. By the adoption of these principles, the taxpayers will be saved immense sums of interest. Money will cease to be master and become the servant of humanity. - Abraham Lincoln
If the government was not dereclict in it's Constitutional duty and was actually issuing money to the states and therefore the people, could we not have a jobs boom? Imagine the billions Bernanke is using to bailout his banker masters being paid to workers installing high speed fiber internet across the nation? Imagine Verizon and Time Warner being rendered obsolete by efficient and cheap internet and television sercvices? Think of the capital it would free up for businesses who are currently forced to support the TWC/Verizon/ATT/etc monopolies? If we're gonna issue new money this would seem a far more beneficial way to do it...
Cut out the middleman (who's labor is of no real value anyway), oh the humanity, whatever will all those paper-pushers do? Certainly I can interest you in a financal "product" of mass destruction?
Become a cheap source of fertilizer.
"If we're gonna issue new money this would seem a far more beneficial way to do it..."
Beneficial for who? Verizon and ATT would have to cut executive compensation if they only got $6 a month for providing you with the superior internet services that the godless Europeans get.
SIX BUCKS A MONTH!!!
http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/28/why-is-european-broadband-faster-and-...
We chose the UK because it's racing ahead in global rankings. Over the past decade, average speeds increased by 25 percent between 2009 and 2010, while prices have tumbled. Broadband service comparable to what we get here in the U.S. is available for less than $6 a month. And no, there isn't a zero missing there. Six bucks a month.
Are you saying it's time to upgrade my Compuserve?
Full employment requires people willing to be employed at the prevailing wage. Government benefits compounded with borrowed and printed money may drive ultimate unemployment and participation rates into the dumper. Peak indeed! World wide wage competition means our wages will decline. The longer we spend convincing people they don't have to work for these shitty wages, the worse the final reckoning will be. Austerity now or starvation later. Same as its ever been, in the natural world anyway.
TPTB want wage decline in conjunction with rising asset prices. You can only fight gravity for so long. Protracted deflation of assets is coming whether they want it or not...
If you have no money to pay for things what other choice is there?
They know all that. But every additional day they can buy with QE is that many more of their own into the lifeboats.
I think they'll be disappointed in where those lifeboats take them... Read The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism excerpts from 1984. The uncontrollable expansion of technology is going to render their precious class system obsolete. They have tried to destroy this trend (with much urgency the last 30 years) but it is inevitable. There is no longer any fundamental reason for the divide between the very top and the bottom to be much more than a house on the hill/beach and some extra cars. The rest is all numbers in a CPU that give them undue power over the rest of us. Contrary to his writings Greenspan's role was to destroy "the age of abundance"...
It's the reason Bernanke and the Fed will fail big time.
Reason why QE is being soaked up by the 1%.
Re: Reason why QE is being soaked up by the 1%.
So, Benny and Fed isn't really failing. It's working as designed. Move the loot from the dumbasses upward.
The only thing left to do is to deregulate and lower taxes/spending. But to do this would be to admit ideological defeat in the face of the market.
Ideology left the building about 5 years ago. This is all about levitation in the face of collapse. And they just lost that battle.
From here on -- down.
We cannot have full employment AND compete internationally. We keep buying cheap foreign goods becasue we claim we can't afford US made stuff, but are creating no way to pay for them. Like eating your chickens while complaining about reduced egg production.
Sigh
Same here over in Europe. To counter the "competition advantage" they want to reduce all wages with 5% and also raise taxes because we gave all the fucking money to the abnks and now we're broke.
So dear Americans... we Europeans feel like shit on the inside to...
Looks like you're on the outs for sure.
Yeah... that's why I'm asking a raise to my boss! That fucker just has to agree!
It doesn't help that over a million immigrants have been brought in, on the completely unnecessary H-1B visa program, to directly displace qualified American STEM talent. Many of our nation's top universities in science and engineering only report 1/3rd of their graduates being able to obtain post-graduation employment. Mere police officers out-earn most STEM workers in the Silicon Valley.
Get over it, no government can defeat algebra.
but we do not have capitalism ...
Re: but we do not have capitalism
And never had or will.
You've only got screwISM and manipulation of the dumbasses by the smart-n-savvy.
With screwism, eventually the dumbasses have nothing. Then other smart-n-savvy people organize the dumbasses and form goverments to "protect" the dumbasses from the smart-n-savvy people (after taking a fee).
Life is about the smart-n-savvy people screwing the dumbasses for fun-n-profit.
There is nothing in the theory of capitalism, as practiced in the modern USA, that would indicate creative destruction would produce more jobs. Especially when we are in a global jobs market place. No American business is under any obligation to hire and employee Americans. Except in the government employment arena where labor reigns supreme and strong unions use political pressure to insure high wages, low productivity and great costly benefit packages, the jobs in government have diverged so much from private employment as to be two seperate worlds with no connection at all.
Besides, what are we to even make of American capitalism? Financialization and rent seeking are the main profit centers. Manipulated markets and financial engineering return the most profits. This employs a set amount of highly paid "players", it often takes special connections to get into this world and reap the rewards.
America's job producing capabilities are restricted to finance/banking, government, police, military and the giant health care. The other jobs are mostly service industry. Let's be honest about them, they pay very low wages, often have no benefits, are rarely full time and are not a path to a career. It is cleaning hotel rooms, serving meals and drinks, domestic service for the well off, flipping burgers and being one of the mass of low paid retail clearks across the consumer mall society. Look at the people who serve you as you go around inside this consumer society, look at them and think, many of these folks are trying to live off of this wage.
Jobs is just a word. If Obama creates a million jobs we tout him as a hero, but what if 99% are low wage, no benefit, part time jobs? People who will use food stamps, use medicaid and all the other social programs. The employer gets cheap labor, the taxpayer gets a dependent. We pay for keeping them off the streets, while corporate profits soar. It is a grand bargain between government and capital. Government pays the costs to allow the cheap labor that capital gets to use. And if China was really allowed to compete and buy US businesses, then we could see wages crash another step lower. Why shouldn't business simply bring in the labor they want. They already do it with Mexican workers, why not Chinese, Vietnamese and Middle Eastern?
Jobs, they are not coming back. If you are in the top 10%, you are going to experience a new golden age of higher and higher incomes, your corporations will return heft profits. The others will just have to scramble for government jobs, because government is the only middle class employer left, union and middle class. All others are screwed.
Re: If you are in the top 10%
Good post.
As long as the bottom 90% have enough (near) food and entertainment, the top 10% are safe.
Charles, you commmunist slut, ...
Really? When do we notify the masses?
Re: When do we notify the masses?
As always, "the masses" are only manipulated with bullshit. That's what makes them "masses".
The international banking families that own the Fed monetary system do not practice capitalism.
It is a huge and dangerous error to continue using the world capitalism in connection with a banker-dominating tyranny. These international bankers do not just own and control the means of production which was the original definition of capitalism, they now own and control the government that makes the laws.
America did not follow a progression of capitalism into tyranny. It was an imported tyranny which came from Europe to design the Federal Reserve System so that the private owners of the Federal Reserve could take ownership of the currency and eventually the public officials they needed to support the cartel.
Why was it so easy for the Fed to gain total control of the U.S. economy and thus its political system? The bankers took full advantage of a white Christian culture’s tradition to turn the other cheek. A Christian culture gives other persons a chance and time to explain themselves and the latter used this consideration to cheat and lie and take-in enough of the country’s low information people to make headway into and, eventually use that leverage, to take control over the nation’s infrastructure.
The good news is there’s an end to this; it has a shelf life; people do learn albeit it has taken 100 years to reach this boiling point. There’s a rising awareness of what the Fed is today because of its abusive greed and its over-the-top tyrannical control over individual destiny.
Crony Capitalism is socialism.
As for the current confusion in word definitions and deliberate misuse of the language – such as socialism, capitalism, state welfare capitalism, fascism, liberalism, conservatism, ad nauseam - among economists and educators and journalists and by professors “who engage in their own form of academic Newspeak,” the former editor of the English weekly, The New Statesman, Paul Johnson says that it is made use of by the Marxists “to promote their own ends.”
Crony Capitalism - Wikipedia
“Crony capitalism is a term describing an economy in which success in business depends on close relationships between business people and government officials. It may be exhibited by favoritism in the distribution of legal permits, government grants, special tax breaks, or other forms of dirigisme.[1] Crony capitalism is believed to arise when political cronyism spills over into the business world; self-serving friendships and family ties between businessmen and the government influence the economy and society to the extent that it corrupts public-serving economic and political ideals.”…

No one practices capitalism because most of us know better than to cut our own throat.
"It's Definitive - We've Reached Peak Jobs"
No ....
It's Definitive - We've Reached Peak Manipulaton / Intervention
Kinda hard to have good paying jobs when the government signs most favored nation status with China and sends all manufacturing in America over to China so their slaves can do the jobs for pennies on the dollar compared to the American workers.
Competition is one thing...but sending all our manufacturing to a slave nation isn't exactly playing the game by the same rules.
But then again, it's not like they didn't know this would happen...it wasn't unexpected. It was planned and hoped for by the Globalist scum who run America.
They created us and now they are taking us down by deindustrializing us and moving everything offshore while completely looting every resource America has.
They'll get all the goodies and profits and the people are going to get stuck with all the debt, poverty, and a majorly wicked police state dying to unleash even worse abuses on us.
Oh well...can't turn back now I guess. I hope those scumbag sons of bitchez are ready for a fight when they finally try to come at us. Cuz they're going to get one, and they're going to get their asses kicked real bad too.
When they are lending us the money for this crap they want to be sure we got the best deal we could.
There has long been a quasi-magical belief in the U.S. that capitalism's intrinsic dynamic of creative destruction will always create more jobs than it destroys. The evidence is compelling that this belief is no longer reality-based.
How can the author make this assertion when the whole problem is that creative destruction is no longer allowed in the USA! The FED and the status quo will not stand for it. Capitalism was outlawed in the USA the second Hank Paulson, Ben Bernanke and the Congress took control. The politicians (and their cronie bankers) pick the winners not the market.
to create your capitalist UTOPIA you would have had to learn to live with the original inhabitants of the US continent like ecologically independent pioneers; which those guys were. Once the US got on that train of "ethnic cleansing" the rest was just water under the bridge.
So to recreate a new utopia you have to clean out the USA one more time.
Only one problem; the other side has decided you are the new Mohican. Creative destruction is at your expense. There has to be a sucker, a fall guy in every cycle of human "reconstruct". Otherwise it would not be HUMAN (the reconstruct).
Only other solution : you the Mohican turn the table on the new blue coats (the government of old!)
Good luck at playing at being Spartacus.
creative destruction has hit the asymptote; what went wrong inspite of the helicopter and petrodollar hegemony; inspite of having the richest 1% super-duper highly innovative class, the hi-fliers of Virgin SHUTTLE, surfing on the waves of Caymanista heaven.
WHAT WENT WRONG???
Is a Chinese commy state plutocrat turned slave labour commissar cum entrepreneur a better breed of Oligarch than America's Congressional roll call of Hard hatted MIC bugle blowers, braying to the world that the SEAL team runs the world against the dirty dozen in the name of the kingdom of heaven? Can the contrary be true? WAS Nguyen Giap a better military strategist than any american general ever was?
You get te creepy feeling that Ronnie and Maggie got it all wrong...now that is worse than french despondency at losing Dien Bien Phu as continuation of Waterloo, as they did in their Halcyon days when they got clobbered at Constantinople, Sicily and Holy Land to schismatic greeks, infidel turbaned Mamlukes and treacherous sons of Aragon respectively. When we were Kings and sang "god wills it" and nobody could contest it. Some countries have long time lines of recurrent hegemonial plays that teach them that life is about making good wines and cheeses! And avoiding going into DEBT.
Damn that punk Plato for writing the Republic and damn that skunk Aristotle for talking about Ethics.
All we want to do is to f*** the world one way or the other and all we want the world to do is to sing : thank you for making us eaters of your fiat debt to infinity like it was Heinz ketchup on a Macburger.
Now that should be so easy.
"There has long been a quasi-magical belief in the U.S. that capitalism's intrinsic dynamic of creative destruction will always create more jobs than it destroys. The evidence is compelling that this belief is no longer reality-based."
Um ... Someone explain to CHS that creative destruction has been increasingly prohibited by government for a long time now.
USA population 1999=279m / 2013=317m is an increase of slightly under 14%, not 28%
It doesn't change the point, but numbers are numbers.
If you compare to 1989 then you hit 28%, but there were less jobs then, not unchanged compared to 2013.
"Full-time jobs: the number of full-time jobs is essentially unchanged from 1999 while the U.S. population has increased 28%."
This statement may require some clarification. The U.S. population has not grown by 28% since 1999.

Maybe if women got out of the office and back in the kitchen they could find male breadwinners to seed them.
Feminism was invented by corporations to increase labor supply when there wasn't enough to go around. It's now maladaptive.
Social health cannot obtain without thorough refeminization.
