Shutdown Now 6th Longest In History (Longer Than Average Of All Others)

Tyler Durden's picture

The consensus meme remains that a US government shut-down will have minimal economic effect if it is not protracted. Well, the US government shutdown is now 8 days old. To put things in perspective there have been 17 previous shutdowns through history and this is now the equal 6th longest - the average being 6.47 days.

As Deutsche's Jim Reid notes,

there continues to be a lack of obvious progress with Speaker Boehner refusing to back down on the budget and debt ceiling discussions without concessions from the President. On the other side the director of the President’s National Economic Council Gene Sperling has suggested that the President will not negotiate with any faction using the threat of default to force policy change.

On top of this polling continues to throw out mixed messages which can be used by either side to support their case - a recent CBS poll placed disapproval of congressional Republicans at 72% (vs Obama and congressional Democrats at 61%) whilst in the same poll 55% of responders said they believed the debt ceiling should be raised but with spending cuts. The latter stat gives Boehner some legitimacy in maintaining his stance.

This is just a bullshit presentation of dear leader and the CONgress buttfucking each other for points.

Six days, six months - so be it. The spendthrifts must be checked; the irreponsible, unbridled printing and spending must come to an end. We must grind whatever grist the mill of fiscal responsibility requires in order to recapture sanity in this land.

I notice that this kind of shit didn't happen prior to 1971.

Things seem to be lining up that way, and future historians will say that the signs of the decline of the USA were CLEAR, and likely cite this as one of the clear signs of such.

Don't hold your breath. This will simply be used along with the sequester to excuse the real state of the economy. They can only bury the stats for so long. The main thing is to get the blame placed. Thats all politics is now. Its not about fixing anything. Its about continual accidental and deliberate fuckups and who they will blame for it. Its like they are shitting in their own bed just so they can blame it on their lover, sick fucks, and we have to clean it up.

You nailed it MV; there is NO shutdown, just a big lie and media blitz to gather our attention while another OP/scam/theft is occurring.

What a complete discrace.

The present period is like after the war where we have a huge debt hangover to deal with.  We have had our blowup on the private side, the private side is largely back and doing well.  Large corporations are doing great.  Now we have a government that has not undergone any serious reform since the days Lewinski's boy toy was in the WH.  It is now time for the public sector to take their medicine and downsize their operations to get back in line with reality.  It is just time, we have the wailing, we have the furious arm waving by the MSM about the injustice of it all (the shutdown), but wa have zero concrete action to slim the place down. We have democrats from states that have really crappy finances eager to create the same situation at the national level, seemingly so they are not alone in their fiscal mismanagement.  The party line of the big spenders is "the deficit is improving see, we can continue to spend like drunken sailors" but anyone paying attention know that finances at the federal level are in complete disarray.  The heads of both the pentagon and the state department both keep gallivanting around in pastels and native asian drag one in DC, one in Bali.  It is crazy town and the lunatics remain in control of the asylum at least in the eyes of the media.  It is time to put the house in order (,gov finances).  The usual band of ivy league eCON players continue to trumpet the message that we have not spent enough money on frivelous goods yet, but the people know from experience that nirvana can never be reached for those folks. Leave the place shut down, raise the debt ceiling incrementally to cover a few months at a time, and keep trying.  Time to reform DC, we knew it would come sooner or later, and with the shutdown and all the hoopla it would be nothing but a damn shame if we just went back to business as usual.

The part of the ACA that requires people to be fined for not buying something is a farce.  That is frankly completely un-american, you are born, and even if you do absolutely nothing, you are now compelled to pay a fine, bullshit.  What about handicapped folks who don't work?  They are gonna be in arrears to the IRS now?  This is a joke.

Its a Shutdown Lite.

All you need to do is cry and stomp your feet loud enough like Lockheed Martin just did and they'll deem your contract "critical to national security" and poof, you're back in business.

Pretty soon the whole 'shutdown' will consist of 3 guys from Planned Parenthood being forced to take another paid furlo-cacation.

I refuse to take this 'shutdown' seriously.

As for the US defaulting when the debt ceiling is reached... nigga, pleeeeeeze.

Once they've postured sufficiently for their respective constituencies the pols will start sucking each other off again and doing what they do bestest - wasting other people's money.

When only 17% of government is shut down it's not really a shutdown that's what we in the private sector prefer calling job cuts. When will the main stream media report on this administrations failures accurately? Until they do nothing good will come from this ongoing economic collapse.

Yea, but compared to other shutdowns on a relative scale vs. the size of government a very small portion of useless parts of the government are shut-down.... lets be honest, a side-walk open park / memmorial does not need any real daily mantenance, they could pretty much ignore most monuments for a year or two+++ and the thing would run just fine. (theres nothign to run).

The parks and such are "closed" just as a political protest (the government is protesting against the American people trying to prove some bullshit point of how much "we need them" when we really don't....).

The government is essentially useless.... its a criminal organization propped up by criminals "voting" to steal things from the other side.

If we are goingt to have an economy that functions by the government stealing 70% of what people earn for a living and then spending it on useless garbage................. then lets just cut the middle man out and have the recipients do the stealing directly, its soo much better and more efficient that way.

It's really a joke to call this a "shutdown" because essentially nothing is actually shutdown. 99% of the government is ops normal right now ... of course, with the exception of a couple hundred thousand furloughed employees who are essentially getting a paid vacation.

This Kabuki theatre show may be longer than the previous ones, but the actors wearing elephant and jackass costumes always stay the same.  Of course, the plot never changes - pretending to fight while forcibly double-penetrating The Sheeple, followed by the "happy ending" with them walking away together holding hands like fags as heavily-armed storm troopers finish stomping and robbing The Sheeple.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/10/08/senior-house-gop-source-short-term-debt-ceiling-may-be-way-out/

Washington (CNN) – The door the White House appears to have opened to a short-term debt ceiling increase may be a temporary way out of the standoff, a senior House Republican told CNN.

The Republicans may be willing to go for a short-term debt ceiling increase as long as the president agrees to use that time to negotiate, the source told CNN Chief Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash.

How long is short term?

This GOP source said maybe four to six weeks.

Still, it’s unclear whether Republicans could even get that short-term bill through the House without even a tiny concession on spending cuts from Democrats.

When President Barack Obama was asked during Tuesday's news conference whether he would be open to a short-term debt ceiling increase, he responded “absolutely.”

“I mean, what I've said is that I will talk about anything. What will happen is, we won't agree on everything. I mean, the truth is, is that the parties are pretty divided on a whole bunch of big issues right now," Obama said. "Everybody understands that."

The House GOP source said that the president’s call to Republican House Speaker John Boehner on Tuesday was a good first step – and they have to keep talking.

CNN’s Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger reported on Saturday that a senior House Republican said one idea being considered is a six-week extension of the continuing resolution to fund the government, and the debt ceiling, to allow for time for both sides to negotiate.
