I am not that worried.  I want a default.  I want our debt to disappear.  The only real problem is that we will be back up to 17 trillion in debt within 8 years, the printing will continue, the spending will continue, and the USD purchasing power will be cut in half and take all the other currencies with it.  But hey, what a great way to get another 17 trillion added on to the debt limit.  Just erase the first 17 trillion.  Within the realm of the paper markets game, which is totally rigged, I don't expect much visible change.  That is only because none of the numbers on the screen reflect anything about reality.  If you want reality, you have to be in non paper commodities and PMs.  I see little connection between the world of paper and the real world.

They just have to find out who is taking the blame if they are going to do it.

Also my basement is full of food, just in case I am wrong.

you mean the Tea Party faction inside of the Republican "tent"? I'm no expert in American politics (and not partisan at all - hell, I'm the ultimate alien living in a different continent), but I read a lot of commentaries that hint on the opposite, i.e. that most Southern Tea Party congresspersons come from super-safe (of course gerrymandered) districts

why should they have this kind of thoughts? honest question. does this imply that they feel they have a once-in-a-lifetime chance?

and "gerrymandered districts" are dirty words, here. meanwhile, US politics still move the world. perhaps not forever, but still

take your head out of your provincial ass, for once. is the Tea Party something that was sent from heaven by rosy-cheeked angels? if yes, which kind of rosy-cheeked angels?

I sense a lot of cognitive dissonance. meanwhile many commentators are utterly at loss in foreign politics. but it does not yet count, does it?

The way I see it, the Republican establishment pissed off a lot of Republican voters over the years by allowing the government to grow out of control. From that, the Tea Party emerged, but many of those people now view themselves almost as separate from Republicans as they are from Democrats. When they sit out elections, close races can go to Democrats and gerrymandered districts can become competitive.

So establishment Republicans, vulnerable and hurting for votes in national elections, are now paying lip service to Tea Party ideas, hoping they can pull enough votes back into the Republican Party to compete with Democrats. Whether this will succeed remains to be seen.

One thing that WILL NOT happen: the Republican establishment won't allow a permanent shift toward libertarianism within the party. After the 2012 elections, many of the more libertarian-minded members of Congress were stripped of committee assignments, etc. The Tea Party is marginally libertarian, so that should tell TP supporters just how welcome they are in the Republican party.

The establishment/progressive GOP currently has the purse strings, that will have to change before TEA/Libertarians will make a serious move in the GOP. Tossing Cornyn, McCain and McConnell out on their asses in coming elections might be a game changer.

Why is it that 10% of the Congress, the TEA backed ones, seem to raise so much ire amongst the left and the progressives in the GOP. They must represent the thoughts of more than 10% of the population would be my guess.

The Tea Party has almost no power within the Republican party itself. Despite the current meme, it cannot hold anything "hostage." What you're seeing is the Republican establishment paying lip service to the Tea Party and its loathing of the Obamacare mandate and trying to win back a chunk of voters it lost over the past decade (see my post above).

That said, Republicans in the House have put forward any number of bills to fund essentially all of the government, but Senate Democrats simply refuse to vote on them. Both sides are acting childish, but one side — Obama and the Democrats — is also doing that annoying "La-la-la! I can't hear you!" thing that bratty children like to do.

I think the super-safe aspect comes from the nature of the residents as opposed to gerrymandering. There was a popular poster in the US of an electric chair with the caption "Justice- regular or extra crispy" which about covers the entire political spectrum (at least as to what they would like to see done the abomination that is DC) in certain districts regardless of how boundaries are drawn. Re-districting is done every ten years following the national census and is controlled by States (the process and level of partisanship varies from State to State), so any "funky turns" to the district boundary lines are probably more the result of a State-level incumbent trying to defend "his" office. There has ironically been gerrymandering done to increase minority representation, and even in a State like Texas there are some cesspools enclaves that have a fetish for prostrating themselves before Washington, and they tend to send similarly minded representatives to Washington. To the extent that gerrymandering exists I think it exists along the battle-fronts, not back on safe territory. However, There was one blantant instance of gerrymandering recently where the Democrats in Maryland got a long serving Republican in the House ousted by doing carving up the western leg of State but the State is solidly Democrat and they end to view the ex-Washington/Baltimore rural area is a bunch of undesirable in-laws that they would rather not have, of course when a succession movement started in the Western counties, the grass stopped being greener on the other side of the hill.

(And not to insinuate that the citizenry doesn't do a wonderful job of self-gerrymandering absent State intervention, the number of closet racists that must exist in the Blue states to create these divisions is truly staggering)

Not sure I would agree with that.  The states that are the swing states are increasingly populated by the Free Shit Army -- Wisconsin, PA, Va, Ohio, Colorado, and Florida....  The only upside to Immigration reform is that the Blue states will bleed heavily if all of the illegals are counted in the 2020 census.  The senate is pretty much a lost cause, the house should be able to be held and defended.  Next whitehouse run, is likely a lost cause if its hillary.   Cuomo or Bitme would be interesting against a real republican.....  But if its Crusty, Ryan, or another Bush forget about it.

Might as well write off national elections going forward. We've passed the government dependency threshold, and the majority will now vote for the person who promises not to cut their benefits. Amnesty would only add to that fact.

Limited government folks should seriously start considering the best way to get a collection of states to call for secession. We need a divorce from the federal government, and the next 10-20 years will be chaotic as hell.

In essence it is a fight between freely elected representatives and a freely elected president. It is a fight about who determines  and controls the budget and as such very dangerous. 200 years ago there would have been a civil war, I hope this time it can be resolved in a more peaceful way. I really fear that this will only heat up.

The worst thing about a consolidated government, so the most passionate [anti-federalists] argued, was that, once in place, its relentless expansion of arbitrary power was unstoppable, its tendency toward corruption was inevitable, and its appetite for despotism was unquenchable

Seems Boner is in a good spot though to keep holding out - he may get short term blame for a bad outcome, but long term does Obama really want his legacy to be the prsident that presided over US crash and burn?

Hmmm.....maybe he does actually.

It is not a bipartisan affair, this time it is about the constitution and balance of power between adminstration and congress. Both parties have driven the US into a major constitutional problem about budget and taxation competencies. Slavery is a minor thing compared to this. You see, "no taxation without representation". Obama was right to state that this needs a fix. Boehner would not disagree, but how to achieve a compromise?

TRANSCRIPT: House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) Statement on the Shutdown And Debt Limit
2013-10-08 21:00:43.838 GMT

Oct. 8 (Washington Post) -- House Speaker John Boehner
(R-Ohio) delivered the following statement on the government
shutdown and the federal debt ceiling on Oct. 8 at the U.S.
Capitol.
HOUSE SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER: Good afternoon, everyone.
As you all know, I had a phone call with the president of
the United States this morning. I will say it was a pleasant
conversation, although I have to say I was disappointed that the
president refuses to negotiate.
When it comes to the issue of funding of our government, the
House has passed four bills, four bills to fund our government
and provide fairness to the American people under "Obamacare."
Each of those four bills was rejected by the United States
Senate. Under the Constitution and our system of government, we
asked that they sit down and have a conversation with us about
funding the government, keeping it open and providing fairness to
the American people under "Obamacare." They've refused to do it.
Now over the last 30 years dozens of times there have been
negotiations over funding our government. All of those
negotiations over the last 30 years have resulted in significant
policy changes. And I would remind you that the president of the
United States and I sat down in the spring of 2011 to negotiate a
funding bill for the government from March all the way through
September. During that negotiation there were all kinds of policy
considerations and, if you recall, the opportunity scholarships
for kids here in D.C. was in fact restored into law.
So the president's position that, listen, we're not going to
sit down and talk to you until you surrender, is just not
sustainable. It's not our system of government.
When it comes to the debt limit, I agree with the president.
We should pay our bills. I didn't come here to shut down the
government; I certainly didn't come here to default on our debt.
But when it comes to the debt limit, again, over the last 40
years, 27 times, the debt limit has been used to carry
significant policy changes that would in fact reduce spending and
put us on a saner fiscal path. President Reagan sat down with Tip
O'Neill in the 1980s. President Bush in 1990 went out to Andrews
Air Force Base and got into a long debate and negotiation with
Democrats here in Congress. Bill Clinton went through this three
times in the 1990s. President Obama and I sat down in 2011 and
had a serious negotiation.
And while the president today suggested that I walked away
from the deal, I would have to remind him that I was in the Oval
Office along with the majority leader, Eric Cantor, when we in
fact had an agreement that two days later the president walked
away from.
But there was, in fact, another negotiation in 2011 that
resulted in, really, the largest deficit reduction bill that
we've seen here in the last 30 years. But in 2010, when Democrats
controlled the Congress and President Obama was in the White
House, what happened was, a group of moderate Democrats in the
House wouldn't agree to raise the debt limit without a
negotiation.
So there was a negotiation then amongst Democrats over
raising the debt ceiling.
The long and short of it is, there is going to be a
negotiation here. We can't raise the debt ceiling without doing
something about what's driving us to borrow more money and to
live beyond our means. The idea that we should continue to spend
money that we don't have and give the bill to our kids and our
grandkids would be wrong.
This isn't about me and it's -- frankly, it's not about
Republicans. This is about saving the future for our kids and our
grandkids, and the only way this is going to happen is to in fact
have a conversation. So it's time to have that conversation, not
next week, not next month, the conversation ought to start today.
And I'm hopeful that whether it's the president or Democrat
leaders here in the Congress, we can begin that conversation.
    Q: Speaker --
Q: Mr. Speaker, can you tell us please, what would you say
to military families who have just been denied death benefits due
to the shutdown?
SPEAKER BOEHNER: Last week, the Congress passed the Pay Our
Military Benefits Act. We gave broad authority to the Department
of Defense to pay all kinds of bills, including this. And
frankly, I think it's disgraceful that they're withholding these
benefits.
But again, tomorrow, the House is going to act specifically
on this and I hope the president will sign it.
    Q: Mr. Speaker --
Q: Mr. Speaker, the president -- go ahead.
Q: Mr. Speaker, the president made it extremely clear that
he isn't going to negotiate. You are making it extremely clear
that you have to negotiate. What happens, in all candor, if it is
11:59 on October 17th and we're not there?
SPEAKER BOEHNER: You know, in times like this, the American
people expect their leaders to sit down and have a conversation.
I want that conversation to occur now.
    Q: Speaker --
Q: Speaker, the president said today that he would negotiate
if there was a temporary deal to open government --
SPEAKER BOEHNER: What the president said today was, if there
is unconditional surrender by Republicans, he'll sit down and
talk to us. That's not the way our government works.
    Thanks, everybody.

so what if this potus does in fact invoke the emergency powers act.  what would we do to fight this.   would the military go after him since the constitution would be suspended.

would a t-bill default be a sufficient reason, and if not, what could congress and the people do?

Rather than 'waxing lyrically', I think the pertinent Q at this point is:  Exactly when (what day) will this go Core Critical?

As Chief Engineer Scotty would say: "Captain, the Dilithium Crystals will disintegrate!"  You get the idea.

Get out your system models or crystal balls.  Forget the "NOISE".  I see the consolidation of US Fascism via one of two paths:

A.  The GOP cave completely under the relentless the combined pressure from Obama plus the MSM.  Budget gets passed, Obamacare gets passed, the imaginary Debt 'Ceiling' gets raised.  This sets historic precedent and signals the IMPERIAL PRESIDENCY as being all but official.

B.  Obama makes use of the Crisis to invoke the IEEPA (International Economic Emergency Powers Act).  Obama exercises Defacto powers of the Imperial Presidency.

Either way, we get Fascism, an Imperial Presidency.  Actually, what we REALLY get is: The Banker-owned MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE!

I'm guessing many of the Obama voters never thought their guy would be this unwilling to negotiate with the opposition over virtually the most important issue of our lifetime. Do you all remember how he campaigned against the contentiousness of the Bush administration in Washington and Congress? What a lie he's turned out to be.

Yeah man like I don't get it either cause like "Boner" and his handlers are so rightous and trustworhty and have proven they can be taken at their word. Ain't none of it real dude. Ya got a president thats a blackman tryin to be white vs a Speaker whose a White man tryihg to dye/tan himself black, both shill shills for warring corporations,, so like who has the most money will win of course which is really "THE" most important issue of our time, and that is like, how long will the American public let just anybody fuck em while gettin their wallet lifted at the same time, like paying to be raped my man.

Washington is nothing more than a stage for the greatest theater of the absurd play of all time, i.e. "Waiting for American voter intelligence!"  Wait all ya want. Talk about it all ya want. Pretend there really is such a thing all ya want cause it ain't never gonna be!
