Republican Senators Emerge: "Meeting With Obama Was Productive But No Deal Yet"
It would appear - in a similar vein to last night's White House exit - the stock market is a little disappointed that Democrats and Republicans did not come out holding hands. Instead, we get the usual maybe good, maybe bad statements:
- SENATOR ORRIN HATCH SAYS OBAMA EXPRESSED CONCERNS OVER DURATION OF HOUSE REPUBLICAN DEBT LIMIT PLAN (well that's 'bad' news for a deal), but
- *OBAMA DIDN'T REJECT MEDICAL DEVICE TAX REPEAL, HATCH SAYS (well that's good news for a deal)
For now the Dow is 30 points off its highs on this lack of news.

I see. More revenue cuts. Makes sense when you have chronic deficits. This ends poorly - cannot say when or what the trigger will be, but it ends badly.
So the Democrats get a debt limit increase, clean CR, government shutdown ended, fully funded Obamacare, and the "Cave(in) Boys" get a one year reprieve from taxes on medical devices. Sounds like a Republican victory they can take home to their districts!!!
Doesn't the fact that the Senators met with Obama and are now hatching their own devious scheme imply that Obama rejected the House proposal? I just don't see a long term raise of the debt ceiling getting through the House. But they continue to surprise me with their cowardice
Right - any long term deals makes the House and Congress invisible until the next crisis.
Why would you leave your homework undone until the very last minute?
The way to look at this is to realize that Obama is devastated at agreeing to the Budget Control Act that wound up a Sequester. He thought for sure the supercommittee would get a deal.
Now he faces 10 years of yearly decreases in the spending baseline, and Ryan is in there informing him that there will be no CR (and maybe ceiling raise) without additional cuts, and this time to entitlements.
The Sequester is the most powerful force in government right now. There isn't going to be any deal if the price of it is additional Ryan-defined cuts.

Last year Hatch calculated the true debt of the USA at a Club for Growth meeting in SoCal.. He mentioned Treasuries BUT he also noted numbers in the 10s of trillions for SocSec and Medicare. Toss in Fannie etc and he gets to over $60T.
Hatch understands the magnitude of the problem even if none of these guys will admit it.
There is no 'fixing', there is only preparing for collapse. I hope these guys are not nearly as ignorant as they try to sound...but truly..I am not sure.
