Republicans Fold Again? - Propose Debt-Limit Raise And End Shutdown In Return For Spending "Talks"

Tyler Durden's picture

It would appear, judging by the market's response and the headlines, that Obama's "unconditional surrender or default" negiotiating tactic has worked... According to AP, the Republicans look to have folded once again:

  • *HOUSE REPUBLICANS SAID TO OFFER PLAN ON SHUTDOWN, DEBT LIMIT
  • *REPUBLICANS SAID TO SEEK TALKS ON REDUCING U.S. SPENDING

The House Republicans are apparently waiting to hear back from the White House on this latest proposal - which amounts to - our translation - "Ok, you can have your government re-opened, and we'll let you raise the debt ceiling... as long as you really really promise to talk about spending cuts at some point in the future maybe possible please."

Via AP,

Officials say House Republicans are offering to pass legislation to avert a default and end the partial government shutdown as part of a package that includes cuts in benefit programs.

Senior aides to Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor outlined the proposal at a late-night White House meeting Thursday with senior administration officials.

In addition to ending the shutdown and increasing the debt limit, the proposal includes an easing of the across-the-board spending cuts that began taking effect a year ago, and replacing them with curbs in benefit programs that Obama himself has backed.

Among them is a plan to raise the cost of Medicare for better-off beneficiaries.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss private deliberations.

Well-off Medicare beneficiaries = rich old people = vote Republican.  So the Republicans agreed to give Obama what he wanted in return for a chance to cut benefits for their core voters.

And that's with Obama being such an amateur.  Imagine if he were a pro ...

True, the only real threat is that of impeachment, conviction and removal from office (all three must be accomplished). Pelosi firmly removed that from the "table" back under Bush II. In so doing she started the quid pro quo, now no-one can be impeached. The Republicans are the minority party, they could not win. They should pick their battles more wisely and persue there goals when they are in the majority. When they were, under Bush II, they initiated the biggest increase in federal spending ever, in the form of Homeland Security. Sorry, no vote for Reps.

2.4 Government Finance and Spending

All persons are entitled to keep the fruits of their labor. We call for the repeal of the income tax, the abolishment of the Internal Revenue Service and all federal programs and services not required under the U.S. Constitution. We oppose any legal requirements forcing employers to serve as tax collectors. Government should not incur debt, which burdens future generations without their consent. We support the passage of a "Balanced Budget Amendment" to the U.S. Constitution, provided that the budget is balanced exclusively by cutting expenditures, and not by raising taxes.

That's right.  Actually, the GOP's fate was sealed in 1980, when Reagan was able to marry up the evangelicals with the traditional white-shoe Republican Party, and still pull moderate Democrats into his fold.

It was never a problem for him, but Bush Sr. had to shift his positions on the social issues to get elected.  That began the slow bleed of more middle of the road and moderate Reagan Republicans, as those who were more socially liberal but fiscally conservative began to feel evermore allienated.

Bush 2 was comfortable with the evangelicals, and he had the business community with him.  Too bad he let the neo-cons lead him around by the nose and into stupid wars, and at the same time turned the FRIE industry loose on the middle class, gave us the Patriot Act, stood by as the charlatans who were pandering to the evangelicals beat up on women's rights, civil rights, education programs, the environment, etc.

Now this is not an argument about right or wrong, but simply observations about trends.  To keep this odd alliance of business and church cobbled together, they have been driving off the youth vote, the women's vote, and what ever minoriity voters they once had.  By the time he left office, even Barrack Obama looked pretty good.

When the Tea Party burst on the scene, they were very quickly bought off by shadowy money ultimately traced to right-wing GOP groups, and their original principals about taxation became diluted with abortion battles, voting rights fights, and all the other right-wing demands.....pushing women and yuouth even further away.

Now, this.  Does this seem like a party destined to do great things?

I have no idea what the answer is, but we need some 3rd way.....some way where the politicians go back to working for the greater good instead of the cronies on "their side".  This corporate sponsorship of politics means the end of America, and you can thank the Supreme Court for that.......corporations are people, my friend.

Dr. Engali's picture

That's a good analysis and primarily my observations as I watched events unfold over the course of my life time. As far as a third way I don't know what the answer is (well actually I do, but I don't think the iSheeple have the stomach for it). It seems to me that we need at least two more parties to the system, but I don't know how that happens without them being corrupted by thw two existing parties. Even if another party would be successful in forming the democins and the republicrats would stand together to squash any up and coming trouble makers.

Why America needs a debt 'default'

Commentary: Is it time to hit the reset button?

By Anthony Mirhaydari

It's clear the fiscal fight in Washington isn't going to end anytime soon.

Sure, a short-extension to the debt ceiling is under discussion, according to reports, but that will only open the door to contentious budget talks over issues like entitlement reform and changes to the tax code. The two parties remain far apart: Republicans want to balance the budget in 10 years, while Democrats want another trillion in taxes and spending.

There's too much at stake and the choices are tough. But what if we didn't have to make it?

What if we took the easy way out that didn't require the sacrifices — such as higher taxes, lower spending, and fewer entitlement benefits — that Democrats and Republicans are playing hardball over in the first place?

What if we could avoid the nightmare that would be a debt-ceiling breech, which would force us to choose between ruining the Treasury's reputation as a risk-free investment but provide checks to seniors on Social Security, or leave grandma in the lurch but pay our creditors in Tokyo and Beijing?

The more I think about the extent of the problems facing this country, the more apparent it is that a hard reset is needed. I'm talking about a debt default, but not in the traditional sense. And the Federal Reserve would play a key role.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

The GOP has a national apparatus that Cruz/Rand/etc. would want to co-op for 2016 that traditional mushies like Jeb and NJFattie will want to use themselves.

I think the libertarian guys will focus on taking over the national GOP apparatus rather then starting from scratch as independents.

The soul of the GOP (and Merica's 2 party system) hangs in the balance!

This was the last time they will have leverage over Obama and just threw it away.   The country is doomed.

Once Obamascare is funded, the end will be near.   People will soonrealize how screwed they really are and won't be able to do a thing about it............Serves them right for bending over.

The Repubiican strategy was doomed from the beginning. In 1996 Newt Gingrinch was demonized by Bill Clinton when he closed the government. It ultimately cost him his speakership.  Why the Republicans can adopt a more rational approach is a mystery to me.  Obamacare looks like it is going to fail on all of its key goals. The Republicans should get out of the way and let the Democrats own this epic catastrophe.  Instead we get a sideshow on closing the government and the debt ceiling that they could never win.  Obama is not a great politician, but the Republican leadership are fools.  This misguided strategy has set back the cause of fiscally responsible government for years.

With QE Yellen taking the Federal Reserve chair in early 2014 and if the Dems take the House in 2014 then the race to US insolvency will be much faster then we think. Look at the damage the Dems did with their majorities in 2008 - 2010, and imagine them with a lock on Congress in 2014 - 2016. We are facing economic, political, and social disaster, and we are racing toward this catastrophe at full speed (no thanks to the apparent failure of the Republicans).

This is terrible for retirees: "Among them is a plan to raise the cost of Medicare for better-off beneficiaries". This is a TAX on middle class retirees.

So the Republicans will not only give Obummer what he wants but also screw retirees? WTF!

Have the Republicans lost their minds? Do they still have a mind? Did they ever have a mind?

Consign then all, DemocRATS, RepubiSHITS, OMarxist, the sociopathis elites, all of them to the toilet and flush it!

This country needs a reset. We need to fold up the Federal Gov and devolve its power down to the States, or the US needs to be broken up into several sovereign regional republics.

Anything but this, this slow grinding death by a thousand cuts by smiling sadists, and then the sudden catastrophic collapse.

I seem to remember at the RNC, republicans screaming down Ron Paul supporters, chanting "USA, USA, USA", changing the rules to take his delegates, as they nominated the former governor from Taxachusettes who pushed through Obamacare light and promised to keep social security intact.

The republican party is dead. You're nothing more than democrats. You can't even get a concession from them. You have no credibility. No great ideological movement. Most of your politicians can't form a cogent argument to the $200 trillion off balance sheet liability, the failure of TBTF, TARP, immigration, or even Obamacare (which Newt "I'm a womanizing, drug abusing fabian socialist" Gingrich has been telling you that this country need compulsory health insurance mandates since 1990).

There is never a reason to vote for a republican ever again.
