Protesting Veterans Tear Down DC Barricades, Chant "Shut Down The White House"
The "Million Vet March" in Washington D.C. appears to be escalating as reports of barricades being torn down, police in riot gear and snipers being deployed, and a growing crowd at The White House chanting for its shut-down suggest the people are growing restless.

Protesters have gathered in front of the White House in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, according to reports.
Park police in riot gear were deployed in front of the building.
“US Park Police have arrived in front of WH. Some in riot gear! Tea party/veteran protesters start booing,” wrote CNN’s Jim Acosta on Twitter.
A rally took place at the World War II memorial and headed to the White House, reported NBC Washington. Several thousand demonstrators came out, it said.
NBC reported that people were carrying barricades that were likely from the WWII memorial to the White House area.
The DC Police Department said its officers are on the scene.
“MPD is on the scene at White House with USSS & USPP concerning protest – marchers using sidewalk,” it wrote on Twitter.
Commentator Sarah Palin and Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) were on the scene and spoke to demonstrators.
The organizers of the protest described themselves as the “Million Vet March.”
It said that veterans and military members are “being used a political pawns in the ongoing government shutdown and budget crisis,” its website reads.
Jeff Tompkins, a protester, told NBC that “it should be open to everyone to come down here and see this … this is not just and not fair,” referring to the WWII memorial.

I totally disagree with your assessment of the civil war. Before my time, it was the only war waged by the US that could have actually benefited society. It wasn't about slavery- kinda like the war on terror ain't about keeping 'Mericans safe. It was fought over State's Rights and decentralized control of gov't. Too bad the wrong side won. But it is what it is, and casting aspersions at our veteran's ain't no way to go about fixin' it.

The federal government, in 1861, no longer had "the consent of the governed" in the southern states. It was their absolute right to leave the union. The wrong side did indeed win. America has had a tyranny ever since as defined: "arbitrary or unrestrained exercise of power; despotic abuse of authority".

I don't know that we were arguing. You may have misunderstood my position on The Great Northern Aggression.
My great grandfather was wounded and his brother was killed in that war. My great grandmother's brother was killed also as well as two of my great, great grandfather's brothers. They were all Yankees, BTW. It has been a mystery to me why they supported Lincoln's War. I suspect it was more due to fear of what would happen to them than anything. After it was over, I believe their attitudes changed, at least partially to justify their participation in it. None of them care much for the blacks. From their viewpoint the worst aspect of slavery was that it was unfair labor competition to the poor white folk. The newspapers of the day, especially the ones directed at the poor and middle-class whites, are an interesting read. The is no doubt that the lies contained in them were instrumental in shaping public opinion.
The question of whether the government has "the consent of the governed" is, I think, an important one for everyone. It's not just directed at you. It's not easy to know what the people really believe these days.

Thank you White Owl. One of the best pieces of advice I've received. But my oldest is not my only. I have 4 sons and a daughter. And now I hear that the Industrial/Military complex wants to put on and are indeed training women to serve frontline (I know they already have in Shit Hole West (Iraq) and Shit Hole East (Afghanistan) but for real ).
And of course.....living out in the country they all know how to shoot (even my 6 year old) and some are old enough to hunt. I've been around and owned guns all my life. I shoot every week that I am home (I travel a lot). I've even taught my oldest some home invasion defense tactics. So even though I most certainly am not a Rambo....I'm not naive either. I would certainly defend hearth and home and my neighbors' and community in a heart beat. But on a national level? There is no national level anymore. We are simply a state in the United States of the World.
Well.....at least in my mind....I have seceeded. My mind has certainly seceeded a long time ago. My home is my country. My family are my citizens. My community is the larger world. And that's it. It was my TDY assignment to Sierra Leone that made me pull the pin. I resigned the day after I returned. Yeah, our decisions were right and we're both guilty of being a lot tardy, not just a little ;-)

20-20, I've paid the price like every other Vet. I didn't have a choice being #3 in the 1969 military draft lottery, but I DID have a choice what MOS (job) I could do in the Army. It was my passion to save lives that kept me there for 20 years, but it got to me and I had to quit. I never killed anyone, but I was shot in the back and lost my right eye while I served. That's the price I paid for helping others, both military and civilian... and it made me realize there was no God nor Country involved in the US Army or ANY Army. We were all just pawns in a rigged chess game. But when people dishonor Vets like this FerElSerf asswipe, I will defend every fellow Vet like myself who had no choice in being drafted and who did their best to help others.
