Foodstamp Program Shutdown Imminent?

Tyler Durden's picture

When over the weekend, a Xerox "glitch" shut down the EBT system, better known as foodstamps, for nearly the entire day across 17 states leaving millions without "funding" to pay for food leading to dramatic examples of the basest human behavior possible, some of the more conspiratorial elements saw this merely as a dress rehearsal for what may be coming in the immediate future. While there was no basis to believe that is the case, a USDA (the currently shuttered agency that administers the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) memo obtained by the Crossroads Urban Center in Utah carries in it a very disturbing warning for the 46+ million Americans currently on foodstamps.

To wit: "understanding the operational issues and constraints that States face, and in the interest of preserving maximum flexibility, we are directing States to hold their November issuance files and delay transmission to State electronic benefit transfer (EBT) vendors until further notice." In other words, as Fox13News summarizes, "States across the country are being told to stop the supplemental nutrition assistance program for the month of November, pending further notice."

The full memo first posted on the Crossroads Facebook page is shown below:

More on this dramatic development which, if implemented, would will result in significant unpredictable outcomes across the nation:

This is going to create a huge hardship for the people we serve here in our food pantry,” says Bill Tibbits who is the Associate Director at Crossroads Urban Center.

They posted a letter from the USDA on its Facebook page. It says in part, “in the interest of preserving maximum flexibility, we are directing states to hold their November issuance files and delay transmission to state electronic benefit transfer vendors until further notice.”

“What this means if there’s not a deal, if Congress doesn’t reach a deal to get federal government back up and running, in Utah about 100,000 families won’t get food stamp benefit,” says Tibbits.

In other words, tens of thousands of Utah families may not be able to feed their children come November.

...

People out here are going to go without food,” says Loralee Smith whose been homeless since August and says the uncertainty is making her uneasy about where her next meal will come from. “I’m on food stamps, I don’t know if I’m going to get them, a lot of people are on food stamps and they don’t know if they’re going to get them.”

Others say if SNAP shuts down, they’ll find a way to feed themselves.

One hopes such "alternative" feeding arrangements will be peaceful, although in the most heavily armed nation in the world, and arguably the one where a massive portion of the population is now fully reliant on the welfare state for virtually every daily need, it is easy to see cutting off daily bread to tens of millions has a less than happy ending.

As the report notes, for people out on the streets like Richard Phillips, "It could impact us and it’s going to cause problems because you’re going to come to find out that people are going to steal and do what they have to do to survive."

Such a realization could come as a very unpleasant wake up call for the millions of other Americans who still live in their Ivory Towers, focusing on the daily gyrations of the S&P500, and largely oblivious of how the rest of America lives.

The full report on what may be the most catalytic event in the history of the US welfare state is presented below.

I'm not sure what you people propose to do with the EBT beneficiaries,

I'd like to see them on state work farms where they are given a productive task in exchange for a daily meal.

Generations of my fathers did it for themselves. No EBT for them. It was either work the fields or starve.

But then they had pride and would die a thousand deaths before accepting a handout.

This is not a Wal-Mart discussion.

Where you go wrong, and dangerously close to "Let them eat cake" -- is where you expend energy on pouncing on the hungry and misled, and neglect false leaders, neglect lies, and neglect trajectory because of it.

There is nothing new going on here.

No, it's not a Wal-Mart discussion.

The hungry and misled should obey Nature's Law and work for their survival like every other creature on this planet. The false leaders who lie, steal, and cheat should be serving life sentences on a state work farm right next to them. Both need an education about life in this world.

Now that you mentioned Walmart. Friend works there. Actually, manages there. Wife works for school, 3 kids, one sick. On ebt and MUST swallow pride so growing boys can get quality protein.

Already have plans in place to share food when shtf (this WK?). Oh yeah, he'll share ammo, lol.

So if Walmart paid 40k for management maybe he wouldn,'t need ebt?

Ok Hairless Dickhead, now I know you are full of fucking shit and talking out your ass you fucking TROLL !!!

Your AVERAGE, Not even high volume Walmart Supercenter store manager earns in excess of $200K per year including bonuses. High volume store managers with low shrink that hit their numbers for the year are at the $300K per year mark, some even higher, Only downside is you do not get a pension and have to save for your own retirement until you reach DM level and above. It is higher turnover position, so unlike the government you are not guaranteed a job at Walmart for life. Co-Managers that help run manage the store operations as well earn in excess of $100k per year. Yes, all managers work nights and weekends, and even holidays.

So, I don't know who this " neighbor" is that says he is on EBT and only making $40K a year as a manager at Walmart, BUT YOU SIR ARE A FUCKING TROLL AND A LIAR, or your "friend" is feeding you a line of serious shit. Maybe he's not even working? Couldn't you hire him on at least part time in your store at $9 an hr ? More than he makes at Walmart right ??

Malcolm X said that "American Democracy was Hypocrisy", and for that I support Malcolm, that the USA is the most 'exceptional hypocrite' in all human history.

All great story today in China on China-Daily saying that Obama is far worse than Hitler, ... as Hitler never killed German Women near the Reich-stag for bumping a post.

Damn right the USA from day one was a failed penal colony that looted a native land. Then it went agrarian, then industrial.

Post WWII out of guilt they freed the 'slaves', hell I remember when I was a kid, there was a curfew for blacks,.... once they ended the curfew they created 'welfare' to keeps the black at home, ... that was ok the middle class paid for all.

Today there is no middle class, so its time for a major fucking CULL, its called Genocide.

Let me TESTIFY on the jobs point:
Since 20 Sept I have been attempting to hire 10-12 FULL time employees for entry level positions that pay approx $40K a year plus benefits, including medical, dental, life insurance, and even a pension. In almost a full month and after 4 information sessions / job fairs I have found 2 of 12 candidates to bring on board. Most of the candidates that apply can't pass a drug screen and just get up and leave when you tell them you do actually administer a drug screen, or their driving record matches that of the late Ted Kennedy.

Bottom line, right now people that want to work are doing so, the rest have just decided its easier to sit back and let the government make them slaves to a new master. It's a damn shame that we've ever gotten to this point, but I don't see anything short of riots and almost a complete revolution to course correct the path of the USA at this time. I hope I am wrong, if not I will at least be prepared....

Blogger on Far-Left Website Thought He ‘Could Go Along’ With Obamacare – Now He Can’t Believe What’s Happening to His Health Insurance

As the realities of Obamacare continue to sink in, more and more people are getting letters from their health insurance providers telling them that their plans no longer comply with federal requirements under Obamacare. We just brought you the story of “Trick Shot Titus” and his family facing significant increases in the cost of their health care plans.

Now, a community blogger on the far-left Daily Kos website has penned a blog post complaining that both he and his wife are facing a nearly 100 percent increase in their monthly premiums. He claims he is canceling his insurance and refuses to pay any “f***ing penalty.”

Blogger “Tirge Caps” explains:

My wife and I just got our updates from Kaiser telling us what our 2014 rates will be. Her monthly has been $168 this year, mine $150. We have a high deductible. We are generally healthy people who don’t go to the doctor often. I barely ever go. The insurance is in case of a major catastrophe.

Well, now, because of Obamacare, my wife’s rate is gong to $302 per month and mine is jumping to $284.

I am canceling insurance for us and I am not paying any f***ing penalty. What the hell kind of reform is this?

The blogger also notes he and his wife may qualify for some “government assistance,” but that it’s just “another hoop” to jump through to get assistance that he may or may not be eligible for.

“I never felt too good about how this was passed and what it entailed, but I figured if it saved Americans money, I could go along with it,” he admits. “I don’t know what to think now. This appears, in my experience, to not be a reform for the people.”

“What am I missing?”

Just in case the post is scrubbed off the Daily Kos, here’s a screengrab (Warning: Some strong language):

Doesn't Tirge Caps know that they don't check income?  It's the honor system.  hehe

So he should just claim they make aobut $18k together as a family, and they'll get it all fully subsidized by the American taxpayer.

That way, the whole system collapses sooner....

banzai401's picture

An 'honor system', baby-sat by the IRS, and how long before making a 'false-statement' on a ACA form will become a Felony?

These things always start that way, hell the IRS court a long time ago ruled that paying tax was a voluntary compliance act, ... its your duty to disclose income and expense, if you can legally avoid taxes, then its up to you. ...

What I'm hearing is that MOST people will pay the PENALTY to opt-out, as that will be viewed as the cheapest option, especially given that if you don't opt-out with payment, or enroll with payment, then you can't have a driver's license or a passport.

So in effect the great majority will PAY the IRS real money to OPT-OUT of something that nobody wants. In other words a voluntary 'haircut' where the masses pay the GUBMINT NOT to give them something.

So in effect what we have is a NEW TAX on the POOR like the lottery in that they get nothing back, but in this case a 100% chance they get nothing back.

TAX ON MORONS - ACA 2013 thanks oreo

So Tigre Caps and his wife just experienced an 84% increase, or $268 dollars more per month in the cost of their healthcare as a result of Obumma Care.

If you ask Tigre Caps today knowing this now, who would he vote for again for President in 2012" he would say Obumma. The money and increased costs mean nothing to most far left wing people, they would vote for Obumma and "Shotgun" Joe Biden again in a second, just like a dog eats his own vomit ... That's the part of all of this just drives me crazy... Knowing our country is totally bankrupt, they will drive FORWARD and implement the most costly tax ever laid down upon the backs of the American worker. Fucking Unbelievable.

$600/month for 2 people is not bad. The bills for any major disease/accident will be catastrophic and bankrupt you, and that's the best case scenario. Worst case is you don't have money to pay and you'll die.

I don't think the insurance is not the problem - it's a neccesity. I think Americans should wonder why their health system is so expensive, actually 2x as expensive as any other developed country.

The Quantity nor the Quality of the answers put forth, guarantee a perfect solution to our dillema Captain.

But your efforts have been duly noted, despite the complete lack of even the slightest attempt at some enlightenment as to a solution.

AFAIK the story is not being picked up anywhere else. Probably to avoid confusion or potential outright panic

ZH is FIRST again!

Like the fact that OBAMA arrested eric sander the civil rights lawyer representing dead miriam carey,... obama don't want a lawsuit, so what does he do? Fucking has a civil-rights lawyer arrested on bankrupty,... that never fucking happens?

STOP HOLD this thought, ... how about OBama arresting a banker?

No, comrade Banzai. In USSA, if he doesn't get them what they want, bankers arrest Obama

You don't need food stamps when the red cross distributes the food.

Do not forget to send paychecks to the troops.
When running a scheme of extorting the weak, farming the poor, priorities exist.

Burn it down! I wonder, we all know Boehner is begging to cave but it does seem like 0bama wants to drag this out. Do they dare let the genie out of the bottle?

I will repost thoughts from a few days ago.

ACA must stand, in Bath House Barry's plan. We all know it is chock full of regulations and rulings.

ACA is the central part of a plan to implement that 'fundamental change-' to a socialist authoritarian regime.

From a marxist/fascist point of view this does it all. It bankrupts a huger % of the dwindling middle class. It contains all of your information uploaded to a national intel database. It also bankrupts the USG more quickly (Cloward-Piven).

The EBT situation can be used by BHB to create riots, pressure congress, and generate fear. It can be used to activate the EOs written for him to declare a national emergency and seize all means of production (German Enabling Acts).

This is how Hitler did it. He would demand a small item, raise hell, and finally the other side would capitulate. Suddenly, Hitler would claim what he originally wanted was now not enough. He wanted More. He would not budge, as you see BHB refuses to budge and demands even moar.

The situation is a win-win. He either ends up with Absolute Power, or he is defeated, but the US sustains fatal damage in his removal.

As I said before, it is the calm before the hurricane. Stock up. I am finishing preparations. Worse case, I have extra supplies and fewer grocery store visits.

Bath House Barry WANTS the US to collapse. It has always been his goal and his controllers' goal. Every act he has committed has been towards this goal.

Absolutely wrong.
Socialism may not require, by definition, there by consent but it does require, by definition, the total control & ownership BY THE PEOPLE, of the means of production.
THIS IS NOT AT ALL what happens in ACA.
Obamacare is a merger of insurance & big pharma corporations TO the government to BE your government.
This is FASCISM. Not whatsoever is the purpose to do one socialist act. Its purpose is to revoke your entire non-corporate government elements for all time.
Hitler did NOTHING LIKE THIS AT ALL.

Hitler's ally MUSSOLINI did it.

Is there any way out of this mess (i.e. millions of poeple being dependant on government) which doesn't involve destroying lives of all people who depend on food stamps?

sure, easy as pie. Just convince all the useless eaters to grow their own food & stop being useless. Can't be that hard, right?

We all knew it was coming, it was just a matter of time.  If the pols don't use something like this to their own benefit (Democrats), then eventually Mr. Market will force it by not lending to them because they can never pay it pack.  Then, the mighty Fed steps in and buys all issuance, finishing off a currency on it's death-bed through hyperinflation.  Buckle up everyone, we're all going for a ride on the Obama-train.

In the shuffling madness
of the locomotive breath,
runs the all-time loser,
headlong to his death.
"Oh" He feels the piston scraping --
steam breaking on his brow --
old Charlie stole the handle and
the train "it" won't stop going --
no way to slow down.

I had assumed this was JPM firing a shot across the inJustice Dept. for daring to investigate them.

And it turns out they think the Gummint will run out of money? Biter bit!

and another thing,

which bit of Audrey Rowe's signature says Audrey, and which bit Rowe?

Sure looks like a L-inda G-reen
