Ongoing Live Coverage Of The Senate Floor Ravings

Tyler Durden's picture

Reid has told us the US will be downgraded as soon as tonight (Red FD?); Pelosi says this is all Bush's debt anyway; and now Rubio is ranting... never a dull moment on the Senate Floor...

Today, after years of watching the two political parties do the exact same shit over and over again, it just boggles my mind that anyone with half a brain could think there there are actual good guys and bad guys in Washington. Normally intelligent people are parroting all the same stupid partisan talking points they read on the Huffington Post or Fox News and getting very angry at anyone who disagrees with their finger pointing game.

It is amazing what a bunch of dumb fucks the Americans are these days. How it is possible that people with IQs over 80 can live in the same world as you and I and still insist that there is any difference between Republicrats and Demlicans is beyond me. Believing in the Red Team Blue Team meme today shows the same critical thinking ability of a pro wrestling fan that insists that that shit is real.

Totally obligatory "that was then, this is now" NerObama-speak:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

"Over the past 5 years, our federal debt has increased by $3.5 trillion to $8.6 trillion. That is “trillion” with a “T.” That is money that we have borrowed from the Social Security trust fund, borrowed from China and Japan, borrowed from American taxpayers. And over the next 5 years, between now and 2011, the President’s budget will increase the debt by almost another $3.5 trillion."

"Numbers that large are sometimes hard to understand. Some people may wonder why they matter. Here is why: This year, the Federal Government will spend $220 billion on interest. That is more money to pay interest on our national debt than we’ll spend on Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. That is more money to pay interest on our debt this year than we will spend on education, homeland security, transportation, and veterans benefits combined. It is more money in one year than we are likely to spend to rebuild the devastated gulf coast in a way that honors the best of America."

"And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on."

"Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities."

Senator Barack Obama (D-IL)

VOTING AGAINST RAISING THE DEBT CEILING

March 16, 2006

Official National Debt at that time: 8.5 trillion USD

Official National Debt NOW: 17+ trillion (with a "T") USD

When Barbara Retkowski went to a Cape Coral, Florida, health clinic in August to treat a blood condition, she figured the center would bill her insurance company. Instead, it demanded payment upfront.

If you've ever had to jump through the hoops of filing claims on behalf of patients, then the trend to run the fuck away from it isn't particularly troublesome...  patients are going to see what a benefit it has been to have their medical services provider bill insurance for them...  Further, the contracts many providers have to sign to be "in network" do not require medical providers to "eat the turd" on the front end...  if you haven't met your deductible yet, then the bill is the patient's responsibility until the deductible has been met...  going to shock a lot of folks...

I've got a 5k/pp deductible through by TBTF employer.  It's the wave of the future; getting people to actually feal the pain of the healthcare again.

Not a bad thing really.  Too bad these OldFarts on Medicare don't have to pay more up front.   There'd be less of them riding around in socialist motor-scooters demanding they be giving unlimited hip-replacements surgeries.

Git yer Big-Gov hands off my Medicare,  I'm ENTITLED to that!!!

The system is still fucked up though because government sponsored/indigent insurance will dictate rates that medical professionals charge.  We're already seeing some of this in that medical professionals run every test that is remotely associated with an ailment because they know the government will pick up the tab.  People who actually have to pay their own ways are secondary citizens.

If you're going to impose a system where patients have to pay out of pocket for all but catastrophic illnesses, then why not allow us to get catastrophic insurance and not suffer a penalty for it not meeting the requirements demanded by obamacare?  The medical professionals (especially large hospital groups) must be held accountable in this process and eat the turd...  prices have to be reduced and for those with high capital expenses, then they need to fail...  simple as that.  They overbuilt at a time when none of their patients could afford their asking prices.

In short, if you're going to make patients start paying for care, then you need to impose some mechanism to require medical professionals to reduce the cost of their care...  we're getting the worst of both worlds with obamacare (because medical professionals are tbtf and will be bailed out no matter what).  Oh well, at least the insurance companies have been bailed out now...

When Jackson first ran for president in 1824, he denounced the debt as a “national curse.” He vowed to “pay the national debt, to prevent a monied aristocracy from growing up around our administration that must bend to its views, and ultimately destroy the liberty of our country.”

The true blame lies with Alexander Hamilton (on the $10 bill)

http://www.usnews.com/opinion/articles/2008/09/18/past-present-alexander...

The United States was not exactly a good credit risk at that time, so the government was, perhaps, fortunate to get the loan. (Hamilton had helped found the Bank of New York, which probably helped.) It already owed millions, but no one knew exactly how much, for the government's books were, to be charitable, a mess. The Constitution required the new government to assume the debts of the old one under the Articles of Confederation. To win the Revolution, the Continental Congress had borrowed heavily from the French government and from Dutch bankers and had stopped paying both principal and interest on those debts in 1786.

Truely, NOTHING. EVER. CHANGES.

The House and Senate do not agree on a total budget for ALL the gov't.
The proper solution is to pass funding for that which they agree and debate the priorities of the rest.
But the Senate and Obama insist wrongly on getting funding for ALL they want, and refuse to approve any funds for any program until then, regardless of possible shutdown or default. That is extortion or blackmail.

Any re-prioritization of government spending and function should be publicly debated and determined.
What Obama threatens is an engineered and ill-conceived collapse which would only facilitate his assuming "emergency" autocratic powers.

The House has approved funding bills to operate the government, though not all Obama wants.

The Senate, in accord with Obama, has rejected ALL House-approved funding,
even for programs with which the Senate normally agrees.

So instead of properly funding that part which House and Senate agree, and submitting the rest to political negotiation, they choose to deny the House any say in the matter with an all or nothing demand.

They thereby threaten a disorderly economic and government collapse which would only be of benefit to Obama & company.

Contrary to the MSM portrayal, the House (the People's assembly) does and should have a voice and veto in matters of budget.

Contrary to the media portrayal, the House does NOT have to approve all Obama wants.

Contrary to the MSM portrayal, Obama is practicing extortion.

And, to make the point clearly,
The House would be equally guilty of extortion were they to refuse ALL appropriations to finance government in an attempt to force Senate concession over the part in dispute.

[Yes, I realize, given K Street influence, I am only arguing for retaining some semblance of a representative democratic process. The real issue currently between the two wings of the Oligarchy party is whether (when) an 'emergency crisis' will be necessary to proceed with the TBTF takeover and 'Greek' austerity for everyone else.]

Re:  Yes, I realize, given K Street influence, I am only arguing for retaining some semblance of a representative democratic process.

There is a representative democratic process.  It's called 1 dollar 1 vote.

In a corporate-fascist society those with the most money are deemed the most successful - and therefore, the most worthy - and are granted the right to purchase votes to protect their interests.

If you want a populist government "of da people" you've got to figure out how to get money out of the process (it's impossible in the US, but a good mind exersize).

Yes, one dollar one vote. Americans have been voting with their dollars for years, continuing to purchase imported goods, only to awake completely surprised that their jobs had dissappeared. And when they have used actuall ballots to vote they have selected those who would best provide for them without the need of a job. More welfare, more unemployment more dissability more food stamps and section eight vouchers. Their is no one protesting for a job. Increased minimum wage yes, but not jobs. Give me more for doing the same or less. No, I think WE have got exactly what WE voted for. So fear not, your preferred version of democracy seems to be working. "This is what democracy looks like!"

You are likely right about no chance of change here. The more government tries to control business, the more business tries to control government. The natural progression will be for the two to merge into one which has largely already happened. Trying to take power from anyone is hard but the size and scale of this mess is epic. A lot of people, many innocent of the worst of this corruption, will be hurt when it does correct itself, which is the only way it will work now. Personal self interest has taken us to this point and shows no signs of reversing. I think we are likely doomed and occupy ourselves with the details and who's fault it will be but in the end it really won't matter, and never has. I'm convinced this is just what we do.

We may be witnessing the engineered collapse of the USD and default on US debt. There are too many things going on for this to be a run-of-the-mill debt ceiling negotiation. The blatant manipulation of the metals markets, along with the equities markets is only transparent to the sheeple. Keep your powder dry as it is going to be a bumpy road.

Power grid (drill) failure any one?

Its signature, if it happens, will be a highly leveraged effect from an unnamed trigger source, like A EBT system lengthy failure, some single event cascading power grid medium term failure, or some sort of false flag catastrophy vaguely related to another systemic failure. The event, if it happens, will not harm the reputation of wallstreet, the FED, or ECB, or IMF, those are TPTB and are needed for the new currency and new world economic order. Hope none of this happens.

A very powerful scenario is the deadline passes and Treasury has to make their prioritization decisions.

Debt will be serviced.

At that point there is a huge shift of the landscape.  They, inside the administration, have to decide how to inflict pain.  Do they cut off Soc Sec checks on 1 Nov?  If they do, the GOP will scream that they could have paid them, and prove it.

Will they cut off the military?  Well, sharply, and the GOP would be somewhat wise to concentrate on Soc Sec.

The huge danger the administration would then face is the very fast discovery by all that the budget would then be balanced.  The GOP could start talking about pointless, destructive efforts to take it out of balance again.

http://www.skymachines.com/US-National-Debt-Per-Capita-Percent-of-GDP-and-by-Presidental-Term.htm

Bush2 5.7T to 10.7T (almost double in 8 years,  but that's what happens when you tell people to shop instead raising taxes to pay for bombing the sand people)

Obama 10.7T to 16.4T in 4 years (through 2012)

Bush2 added 5 Trillion in 8 years. Or 600B and change.

Obama has added 7 Trillion in 5. Or 1.4 T a year

Obama is spending at 2x the rate of Bush2.

Re:  Obama is spending at 2x the rate of Bush2

Well, not quite, the percentage increases are in the link:

Reagan:  $1 T to 2.7 T,  a 188% increase (14% annual increase).   Bush2:  8.3% annual increase.  Obama:  11.3% annual increase.

But, it doesn't matter:   As Cheney said:  Reagan proved deficits don't matter.

Obama is not to blame for any of this. Hell, if you listen to him, he's not even part of this government. He is our LEADER and above all that. He would much rather be connecting to his people making sandwiches than trying to avert an economic meltdown. He would never lower himself to the level of negotiating, much less compromising with republicans. He is a free black man that will answer to no one, given his black history of oppression (of which he never experienced while being afforded an Ivy League education with no means of paying for it) and his publicly acclaimed superior intelligence. He is The Man!

And why does HE identify so strongly with only one half of his heritage?  Is this not racism as well?

I am Jonesin' for a leader like this...a couple of my fav quotes straight outta Idiocracy...

1)

Pvt. Joe Bowers: [addressing Congress] ... And there was a time in this country, a long time ago, when reading wasn't just for fags and neither was writing. People wrote books and movies, movies that had stories so you cared whose ass it was and why it was farting, and I believe that time can come again!

2)

President Camacho: Now I understand everyone's shit's emotional right now. But I've got a 3 point plan that's going to fix EVERYTHING.

Congressman #1: Break it down, Camacho!

President Camacho: Number 1: We've got this guy Not Sure. Number 2: He's got a higher IQ than ANY MAN ALIVE. and Number 3: He's going to fix EVERYTHING.

If only one of these washington idiots, who might have the brains to understand, would stand up and speak to US citizens telling them that the country is broke and we must retrench before we totally destroy the country.  ....and if only the media would broadcast it far and wide to all the citizens, and if only  the citizens would listen and understand and demand at least a balanced budget.... The word is out. They are using the shutdown to try to install a virtual dictatorship in 2014 and taxes will soar like never before. Every act from here on out will be the design to create a one-party system. If the Democrats win using every social issue they can think of, the economics will then take control and the worst of the worst will then be unleashed. Capital will be forced into hiding and we will see economic growth decline sharply 2015.75-2020.05. This is DEFLATION in full gear.

Market liquidity will collapse after 2015.75 and this will lead to greater volatility. They cannot grasp that when you tax everyone, there is higher unemployment and the VELOCITY of money declines. Cheer-up! We have a front row seat.

Let Rome fall, allow our hegemony to dissolve, and allow the people around the world choose their own leaders that would truly represent them.

How can a governmental body that is not bound by the same rules we are, who nearly half of them are millionaires, who aren't even enrolled in Obamacare themselves, a body that measures performance by money raised instead of constituency happiness truly represent the people? It simply can't.
