Mapping The Real-Time Global Cyberwar

Tyler Durden's picture

On Monday, Google rolled out three new initiatives to ensure the openness of the Internet and access to the service -- even in the face of government crackdowns on the web. As Foreign Policy notes, one of those tools is a proxy plug-in -- creatively titled uProxy -- that uses a peer-to-peer system to create secure Internet connections. Another tool, Project Shield, promises to protect human rights organizations and NGOs from so-called DDoS attacks, which take down a website by directing a flood of traffic toward it and overwhelming it or rendering it unusable. The last project rolled out this week is something called the Digital Attack Map, which is embedded below. It's a fascinating, interactive map that monitors DDoS attacks around the world -- an effort Google hopes will raise awareness about the problem.

The map, which draws on data collected by the network security firm Arbor Networks, provides a nifty visualization of an issue that's been in the headlines constantly over the last year or so.

The result is the first real visualization of what cyberwar looks like in real time. So what can we learn from the effort? Here are some incidents that jump out in playing around with the map.

Ah, if only Google wasn't known to be compromised and in bed with the NSA, then these tools might mean something.

These days, the blue bird on the telegraph line is most likely an NSA listening device.
I hope we're happy now.

Actually I am not happy now. Moar pain please.  :)

"Happy" is a relative condition. The torture victim is just happy the torture has stopped for now while the torturer is happy when s/he can torture again.

When we seek validation and affirmation from external sources our emotional state become entirely dependent upon those very same external sources. I have found that most people are extremely unhappy, but since they have come to believe that they will never ever be truly happy they willingly (happily?) settle for whatever gruel the torturer hands out.

All wretch and no vomit. Who can be happy while in that state?

I just squished a very benign and innocuous insect on my table the other and reflexively said "goodbye NSA." I mean what is this world we're in now? things were a lot simpler when a poker game...was just a poker game.

Hopeless yet? Because that is the state of mind our oppressors wish us to adopt out of desperation. For only then will we beg our torturers for precisely what they want to apply anyway.

Consent....coerced, cajoled or connived from us is the ultimate human power transfer.

Could be, I'd say they are that Syrian rebel Internet hacker squad, maybe down with Nth Korea too.  Russia seems more convert.  This is one for the conspiracy theorists:  No one hacks Wall Street, London, central banks or otherwise....yet

What a kooky world we live in

"Russia looks strangely quiet."

As does Nigeria.  Anytime now we should expect a hail of emails from their nouveau riche, yet ironically desperate young men requesting bank account numbers so as to keep their Humanitarian Aid monies out of the hands of the 'rebels'.

This is only for networks utilizing Arbor Networks Peakflow devices. The vast majority of networks do not utilize these devices.

Yup, network operating groups attempt to standardise on equipment but there are just so many to choose from.  So they end up buying everything.  A tool for every job.   To move data from point A to point B, if B is not available then MTUBlackhole detect and choose failover point C under SNMP trap is sent from OID ipDefaultTTL 1.3.6.1.2.1.4.2 under whatever other conditions defined.

There is just so much cool junk out there, only seems right to play with it.

Better world internet traffic stats than the internet traffic report.  Very detailed.  You can see where a country is working and go bed.  You can see power outages by drops.  Or predetect network outages from a node that are happening by watching for massive drops or the CPU's heating up to keep up with load.

I'm pretty sure there is a Sharknado above DC.   Why can't the sharks just stay in the ocean and why do they hate our freedoms?   And by the way, don't these cyber shark terrorists know that Dick Cheney (wisely, I might add for such a brave and honorable fellow) disconnected the internet connection to his heart thingy so the bad guys couldn't take him out with their angry red dots?  You're wasting your time Sharknadorists!
