So as a student of history, you of course know that you're referring to the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, which rolled back many of the provisions of the Gun Control Act of 1968. It is probably the only reason that Americans are still able to buy ammunition, and that there are FFLs remaining in the country from which they can buy guns. It is so far the only legislative rollback of a previous gun control law....although the assault weapons ban did have a sunset provision that eventually kicked in without legislative action. Reagan considered it a victory at the tme, given that. But bitch on...

Correct. With the FFLs driven out of business you would still have legal intra-state private sale from a dwindling pool of available used firearms with an increasing demand as the population increased. So rather than bitching about a $10,000 M16 you could go bargain hunting for a $1000 Raven .25.
If you could find ammo.....since you couldn't mail order it, your local FFL would be out of business, and Walmart wouldn't be interested in having to photocopy your ID and keep those records for the ATF when you wanted to buy a box of ammo.

The NSA has collected data that functions as a map of the interconnections of everybody's phone calls and internet connections. This map is simultaneously completely accurate and COMPLETELY USELESS. To search and correlate the database would take so much time that the sun would burn out before they finished. Its similar to the Large Hadron collider experiments. One experiment collects so much data that it could never be reduced in any useful amount of time. So the throw out 99.9% and concentrate on a small sample. There are scientists who believe that the Large Hadron collider will NEVER detect the Higg's boson for this reason except by dumb luck. In the same way the NSA will never detect a terrorist plot in time to actually stop it. They would be better off to concentrate on the collecting a small sample of data and hope to get lucky.
I doubt that most people in the government are even capable of understanding the problem of big data. But then stopping terrorists was never the point anyway. Its all just a gigantic make work project as useful as digging holes in the desert and then filling them back up again.
