NSA Website Hacked Ahead Of "Stop Watching Us" Rally
Update: As of 6:30 pm Eastern, the NSA's website has been down for 5 hours.
Following our earlier comments on the vulnerabilities of the Obamacare websites, the fact that the United States National Security Agency suddenly went offline Friday is still surprising. As RT reports, NSA.gov has been unavailable globally as of late Friday afternoon, and Twitter accounts belonging to people loosely affiliated with the Anonymous hacktivism movement have suggested they are responsible.

It is perhaps not entirely coincidental that there is a major “Stop Watching Us” rally scheduled for Saturday in Washington, DC.
where the following letter was sent to Congress:
Dear Members of Congress,
We write to express our concern about recent reports published in the Guardian and the Washington Post, and acknowledged by the Obama Administration, which reveal secret spying by the National Security Agency (NSA) on phone records and Internet activity of people in the United States.
The Washington Post and the Guardian recently published reports based on information provided by an intelligence contractor showing how the NSA and the FBI are gaining broad access to data collected by nine of the leading U.S. Internet companies and sharing this information with foreign governments. As reported, the U.S. government is extracting audio, video, photographs, e-mails, documents, and connection logs that enable analysts to track a person's movements and contacts over time. As a result, the contents of communications of people both abroad and in the U.S. can be swept in without any suspicion of crime or association with a terrorist organization.
Leaked reports also published by the Guardian and confirmed by the Administration reveal that the NSA is also abusing a controversial section of the PATRIOT Act to collect the call records of millions of Verizon customers. The data collected by the NSA includes every call made, the time of the call, the duration of the call, and other "identifying information" for millions of Verizon customers, including entirely domestic calls, regardless of whether those customers have ever been suspected of a crime. The Wall Street Journal has reported that other major carriers, including AT&T and Sprint, are subject to similar secret orders.
This type of blanket data collection by the government strikes at bedrock American values of freedom and privacy. This dragnet surveillance violates the First and Fourth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution, which protect citizens' right to speak and associate anonymously, guard against unreasonable searches and seizures, and protect their right to privacy.
We are calling on Congress to take immediate action to halt this surveillance and provide a full public accounting of the NSA's and the FBI's data collection programs. We call on Congress to immediately and publicly:
- Enact reform this Congress to Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act, the state secrets privilege, and the FISA Amendments Act to make clear that blanket surveillance of the Internet activity and phone records of any person residing in the U.S. is prohibited by law and that violations can be reviewed in adversarial proceedings before a public court;
- Create a special committee to investigate, report, and reveal to the public the extent of this domestic spying. This committee should create specific recommendations for legal and regulatory reform to end unconstitutional surveillance;
- Hold accountable those public officials who are found to be responsible for this unconstitutional surveillance.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Twitter users @AnonymousOwn3r and @TruthIzSexy both were quick to comment on the matter, and implied that a distributed denial-of-service attack, or DDoS, may have been waged as an act of protest against the NSA
So If it's a attack comming from me, or maybe from a country? won't say! It's just looks like a start of a cyber war
— Anonymous Own3r (@AnonymousOwn3r) October 25, 2013
'Sir' @BarackObama you haz problem? Perhaps you should check your national fucking security cos the NSA wont load? http://t.co/e6P0NHQYcO xD
— S.3xe (@TruthIzSexy) October 25, 2013
Allegations that those users participated in the DDoS — a method of over-loading a website with too much traffic — are currently unverified, and @AnonymousOwn3r has previously taken credit for downing websites in a similar fashion, although those claims have been largest contested.
The question, of course, is whether this is retalization from Europe (or Brazil) for the 'denied' allegations over spying?

O Fuck, Nice, Made my weekend. Party time
using firefox?
you need this (in addition to a proxy server, better privacy and adblock plus)
Lightbeam for Firefox 1.0.2https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lightbeam/
graphs all the shit dropped on your computer and how it inter-relates
a frigging web of SPYderWeb
This, used carefully has the potential to be very powerful.
I was reading about this a few minutes ago and it got the old cog wheels turning.
I'll likely install this tomorrow (I never install software while drinking!)
If enough people use this and contact the corporations tracking them suggesting they will take their business elsewhere unless they stop this could be a game changer.
Vote with your wallet - it's the only vote that's listened to.
Molly geez, hacking the NSA? That's like suicide.
Hope that guy lives in Russia....even then....that's some pretty big balls!
It used to be called Collusion. Try Smart Referer, it isolates referers to within a domain only.
Yep, it was called Collusion. I did have it loaded for regular use but found it much too boring to be of worth. If you don't already know the ads are tracking you whatever way they can then you shouldn't be on the net to begin with. Just view your cookie file to find similar info. And always scrub your history after every session... cookies included.
correct on all counts, Angus
but for those who may not be aware of what is lurking, the graphic presentation should be enough to scare the sht out of any interested in privacy and hopefully motivate them to do as you suggest & always use a proxy server such as privateinternetacces
done, thanks
From Mozilla...note funding by the Ford Foundation.
The origins of Lightbeam
Lightbeam began in July 2011 as Collusion, a personal project by Mozilla software developer Atul Varma. Inspired by the book The Filter Bubble, Atul created an experimental add-on to visualize browsing behavior and data collection on the Web.
In February 2012, Gary Kovacs, Mozilla CEO at the time, introduced the Collusion add-on in a TED talk (now one of the most watched TED talks) about exposing online tracking.
In September 2012, Mozilla joined forces with students at Emily Carr University of Art + Design to develop and implement visualizations for the add-on. With the support of the Ford Foundation and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Collusion has been re-imagined as Lightbeam and was launched in the fall of 2013.

There is a great Linux Distro called Netrunner SE that combines everything you mentioned except for lightbeam (that's very recent) but will no doubt be in future releases) plus Firefox comes with Tor preconfigured (also foxyproxy so is easy to disable for fast browsing).
It's not for newbs (ie I had to edit resolv.conf to get a net connection so I dunno if 'netrunner' was the best choice of name) but for anyone with a bit of a clue it does the job it states and does it well (wireshark shows no incoming or outgoing I didn't expect, as oposed to some other distros where there can be several and Windows where there are literally dozens and dozens of packets sent and recieved from unauthorised sources).

Thank God for hackers, they are our front line of defense against overreaching government.
All your traitorous surveillance shit are belong to us.
FUCK THE NSA!
Winning!
Obama: "Let me be clear, this is the work of that evil hacker mastermind George W. Bush."
LOL, Oblame-o will find a way to deflect, perhaps another crisis or something? Scratching head here.
I have to say this much:
FUCK YOU NSA!!!
Spy on this ..!..
STFU or Katy Perry will motorboat you
Gee...I normally have to pay for such a thing.
This is the Friday afternoon humor post, no?
Opps sorry guys! I'll have that restored for you in a jiffy!
Fuck off and die, NSA.
It'll be fixed by the end of November. Promise.
I have a herd of Unicorns that will mature and be for sale in November too.
Do they poop Skittles?
Soon to be overheard at Guantanamo. "Hey, who are all of these skinny, nerdy white guys they keep loading into our cells". Don't fuck with the NSA boys. You will lose!
Yeah, better to just submit, right? I'm sure you have a purty mouth.
Cost for hacking the DOD? 30 years. Cost for hacking the NSA?
Priceless!
China is a big universe
HAAAA...LMFAO. Serves you fuckers right screwing with the rest of the world.
Disclaimer: Attention the REST of the world. The govfuckment of the USA does not represent the American People any longer. Please send foreign military aid to help free US!
Screw that rooster, we don't need any foreign troops here, unless for target practice, to solve our issues!
Just more unpatriotic malcontents who hate Merica, and the troops!
Love it or leave it hippies, and get a goddamn haircut!
Good God, Archie Bunker's been reincarnated.
You forgot to declare your sarcasm first.
Yep 11 down arrows missed that.
I am a patriot, and stand for liberty, limited govt, fiscal sanity and support our troops, sir! I take issue with your statement. There is room in the world for differing opionion, might I add, that is our right. I don't back a communist for a leader or a spy agency for my safety.
If one gives up a little freedom for some safety, one deserves neither freedom nor safety! BF
Obama will need to declare a second tech surge!
DDoS attacks are unfortunately, harmless and unsophisticated.
You wanna talk about a police state. Some asshole drove his BMW down the Philadelphia Art Museum steps(Rocky steps) in the middle of the night when it was pitch dark. They tracked his ass down and put him in custody by 8 am. Those cameras must have incredible night vison. Admittedly, this dick needs to be taught a lesson, but it just shows the capabilities of the surveillance apparatus.
Hey dumb fuck, you think maybe they have street lights in Phili? Take Obamas cock out of your mouth.
Who said anything about Obama? Wow, you must see evil images of Obama in everything. There is an iPhone video which shows how dark it was. Keep your pretty little mouth shut unless you have the facts ummkay.
Bangin7: Cut him some slack. He's only 27 weeks old.
27 weeks and 1 whole day, dumbfucker finally got his cherry popped.
"Tomorrow we dine in Hell!"
Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to nsa.gov Try reloading: nsa.gov
Honey pot. Steer clear.
Some think the same about the Obamacare website.

Well, I'm still waiting for ALL the REAL Patriots who work for the NSA - the Conservatives (without the quotes) and the Liberals (without the quotes) and the Libertarians (without the quotes - there must be more than just one) - to blow the secrets of the NSA.
Can't be long now with so many REAL Patriots in Merica. With so many slow-motion eagles and flags I'm sure it will be real soon.
Slightly off Topic: I've been wondering if the Department of Dis-Info has outsourced troll functions to India, maybe even some contractors in China. What wuz ZH reporting recently - China has 2 million internet monitors.
Now to introduce "the internet Killz Swicthez Bitchez".
I hope they planted a truckload of cumsacs trojans on the NSA site.
the army of voyeur geeks couldn't manage a website hack??? LOL must be outright panic on the enterprise's deck :-)
In my dream, the world had suffered a terrible disaster. A black haze shut out the sun, and the darkness was alive with the moans and screams of spied upon people. Suddenly, a small light glowed. A candle flickered into life, symbol of hope for millions. A single tiny candle, shining in the ugly dark. I laughed and blew it out.
Like this?
It's sad that you have to actually watch THAT movie for such a great ending...
Yeah. If they could reduce story telling to a bunch of punchlines, you'd get a string of punchlines, like Butthead and Beavis. SmaAaAAaart people usually try to get it in the first minute so they throw in special effects to keep us onboard. Its all bullshit. You should be studying history from original sources, because how the legal system works is going to be more important to your safety for the rest of your life than Mickey Rodent's adventures. History is more intricate and interesting than any movie. You get the real rainbows after you do the work, not before.
I am Inwincible! SPLATTT!
4 billion dollar hole in the ground in utah not to mention ft meade and langly. cant unring a bell drstrangebro feindstien.
Thank God! Thank Earth! This is HOPE I can embrace. Just in the past week, I am finally, after all these years, hearing regular jane and joe's expressing their disgust with our government and TPTB that they serve. I really think we are reaching a tipping point.
The country is much safer with the NSA out of commision.
I hope they scrambled the data when they hacked the NSA...that would be poetic justice!
I am having wet dreams -
It was me. I tripped on the extension cord and knocked out the entire system. / lol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_rWja1Xiu8
I thought I did it by using TOR.
Calm down, NSA went into undercover mode.
I put jello in their main water line in Utah.
Is there a site out there that tracks and publishes drone strikes?
Drone strike info?... try healthcare.gov
Coincidence or what - not lost my connection today for the first time in months :-)It's loads of times in every 24hrs.
No big shakes, more an annoyance when for some reason my connection is blocked and I have to reset the router to obtain a new IP then register the IP with the DNS again. Pull the cable for a few minutes on the internet connection, lose your IP and then you are one in a billion. I don't reckon the NSA have figured this bit out yet but if everybody they are trying to block was to pull their connection once an hour on the hour that SUPER COMPUTER IS GOING TO GO INTO OVERDRIVE TRYING TO FIND THE IP.
Your freedom is a non-static IP where you can hide amongst all the other IP's again for a short time.
Your cable modem has 6 lines of code in it's uC (microcontroller) that broadcasts your cable modems mac address directly to a NSA harvester (server that collects these data points).
Don't fear, you can plea your case why you were on that site when the time comes. And it's coming.
On top of your modem's mac address your IP address is logged by your ISP. You have a payment account with your ISP so TPTB has your payment info connected with your IP address. Normal people have to subpoena an ISP to get info. Some say the gov has setup black boxes at most ISP locations because the subpoena process is too slow for them.
You carry your IP address around with you when browse unless proxies or other stealth tech is employed. If you have a website or static IP you can monitor traffic coming in and out. You can see browser type, OS, screen size and other data but no personal info. Cookies are pretty benign but it is a good practice to clear so not expose where you have been.
It is accurate to say the Internet is wide open so if you use it you are leaving a trail sooner or later.
The Cloud is giving your stuff to strangers with no control. So are social networks.... ENJOY!
... still timing out.

DDOSING the bastards.
my brother in law is a cyber nerd at one of the fusion centers,
he's no super nerd Trust me, he cant handle whats coming down the T3
Anybody see this?
http://www.today.com/news/man-live-tweets-former-nsa-chiefs-overheard-ph...
"Hold accountable those public officials who are found to be responsible for this unconstitutional surveillance."
First the elected officials, then the military brass, and then the lifetime bureaucrats. That's a mighty long list.
Will that mean impeachments, firings and criminal prosecutions?
Wanna bet it's the German wing of Anonymous running this?
You can shield your data and communications from the prying eyes of the NSA. Do not use any standard (128-bit or 256-bit, etc.) encryption, these are useful only to the extent that your neighbors and drinking buddies cannot break them. Use an unbreakable mutating-key algorithm encryption like Cryptogra.ph and don't bother hacking the No Such Agency website. Who goes there, anyway?
Want to beat an encumbant? If they voted for Patriot Act renewal in 2011, right there is a very powerful plank to smack them with.
Not talked about publicly, many encumbants (particularly Republitards) are petrified of this connection gaining momentum.
Widowmaker wonders if the nigger in chief told Ms. Merkel the stock Demofuck line; that if she has done nothing wrong she has nothing to worry about...
Oooooo... big deal. Their PR web site is probably run by some government contractor as incompetent as the one that created the Obamacare registration site.
