Thomas Sowell Fears "Race Hustling" Consequences

Years ago, someone said that, according to the laws of aerodynamics, bumblebees cannot fly. But the bumblebees, not knowing the laws of aerodynamics, go ahead and fly anyway.
Something like that happens among people. There have been many ponderous academic writings and dour editorials in the mainstream media, lamenting that most people born poor cannot rise in American society any more. Meanwhile, many poor immigrants arrive here from various parts of Asia, and rise on up the ladder anyway.
Often these Asian immigrants arrive not only with very little money, but also very little knowledge of English. They start out working at low-paid jobs but working so many hours, often at more than one job, that they are able to put a little money aside.
After a few years, they have enough money to open some little shop, where they still work long hours, and still save their money, so that they can afford to send their children to college. Meanwhile, these children know that their parents not only expect, but demand, that they make good grades.
Some people try to explain why Asians, and Asian-Americans, succeed so well in education and in the economy by some special characteristics that they have. That may be true, but their success may also be due to what they do not have -- namely "leaders" who tell them that the deck is so stacked against them that they cannot rise, or at least not without depending on "leaders."
Such "leaders" are like the people who said that the laws of aerodynamics showed that the bumblebee cannot fly. Those who have believed such "leaders" have in fact stayed grounded, unlike the bumblebees.
A painful moment for me, years ago, when I was on the lecture circuit, came after a talk at Marquette University, when a young black student rose and asked: "Even though I am graduating from Marquette University, what hope is there for me?"
Back in the 1950s, when I was a student, I never encountered any fellow black student who expressed such hopelessness, even though there was far more racial discrimination then. We knew that there were obstacles for us to overcome, and we intended to overcome them.
The memory of that Marquette student came back to me, years later, when another black young man said that he had wanted to become a pilot, and had even planned to join the Air Force in order to do so. But then, he said, he now "realized" that "The Man" would never allow a black guy to become a pilot.
This was said decades after a whole squadron of black fighter plane pilots made a reputation for themselves in World War II, as the "Tuskegee Airmen." There have been black generals in the Air Force.
Both these young men -- and many others -- have learned all too well the lessons taught by race hustlers, in their social version of the laws of aerodynamics, which said that they could not rise.
You don't hear about racial "leaders" like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson among Asians or Asian-Americans. Here and there you may see some irresponsible academics peddling that line in the classroom -- some of whom are of Asian ancestry, since no race of human beings is completely lacking in fools.
But they do not get the same attention, or draw the same following, as race hustlers operating in black or Hispanic communities. By and large, Asian youngsters rise and fly.
Other groups in times past also arrived on these shores with very little money and often with very little education, at least during the immigrant generation.
A poem by Carl Sandburg, back during that era, referred to a Jewish fish peddler in Chicago: "His face is that of a man terribly glad to be selling fish, terribly glad that God made fish, and customers to whom he may call his wares from a pushcart."
This fish peddler probably had not gone to college, and so had no one to tell him that he couldn't make it, and that his children couldn't rise, because this was such a terrible country.
No one can claim that there was no anti-Semitism in America, any more than they can claim that there was never any anti-Asian discrimination. There was plenty of both. But that is very different from following "leaders" whose message would only keep them grounded, after the skies were open to them as never before.

Try supermarkets. Save thousands per year. Much of the stuff is still in its packaging, and some isn't even expired- they throw it out if someone put it back in the wrong place, or if something spilled on the outer package. Got $600 worth of booze out of the dumpster once. Must have been a single broken bottle. Got about half a hog of packaged meat once. It was enough to fill a chest freezer (which was also from a dumpster). Never got sick.
I don't even bother with restaurants and Asian supermarkets. It will be all scraps and rotten stuff.

Context is not a fallacy. Sowell is sometimes very wise, and sometimes very foolish, and he sounds exactly the same in both cases.
Bush fooled quite a few Americans. But not nearly as many as Obama fooled, and Obama also fooled virtually ALL of Europe. Until they caught him listening in on their cell phones.

I'm not sure who's behind it. If you want to call them "globalists" I can abide that because I don't have a better explanation. Certainly some group is behind it.
The number one bullet point on the MC agenda is of course "Diversity." They shout it from the rooftops. Hidden within this blanket term is their number two bullet point, And it's more subtle and harder to describe but I'll try. I'll call it "The preeminence of minority culture values." Now this should not be confused with minority rights. It's not. This is about cultural values and making sure that the dominant culture never suppresses or moderates or interferes with the minority culture values in any way.
So, for example, if you were to ask a liberal "Do you think women should have equal rights in the workplace and have the same educational opportunities as men?" The liberal will say of course! Because liberals are strong on equality (a libertarian will also give you the same answer). But, if you ask a diversity fascist the same question, they will qualify their answer and say "Yes, unless that woman happens to be a Muslim, in which case no." The values of Islamic culture trump and come before the values of liberal western democracy (the dominant culture). Same goes on the question of vice such as pornography, drug use, etc. You will get two different answers depending on whether you are asking a liberal versus whether you are asking a multiculturalist. Which is why one should never confuse a multiculturalist with a liberal. They're not the same species, and probably not even the same genus.

The spouse teaches piano part-time. We live in a bucolic college town. Most of the students are Chinese. Most of the Chinese, however, are recent imigrants. The Chinese expect their kids to do well, and if things aren't going well the parents assume the kid is at fault.
The spouse won't take white kids anymore. The parents are uninvolved, the kids are unmotived and lazy, and the parents assume it's the teachers job to motivate the kids. The white parents treat the teacher like an employee, the Chinese parents treat the teacher like a teacher.
There are very few of non-Chinese kids taking piano lesson.
I suspect, the Chinese kids are doomed. They aren't learning the proper lesson to excel in ScamErica. They won't learn how to bullshit their way to top.

Here is my anecdote: I own a shop where I repair/refurshish/restore vintage audio equpipment. I get asked almost daily about who made the best audio gear. Who makes the best? What is the best? With only a few exceptions, I always answer that you can't go wrong with Japanese electronics. The best speakers come from the US or Europe, but for the electronics, the Japanese are nearly unrivalled. The Chinese? Junkshit. Korea? Junk. Malaysia? So-So. Taiwan? Meh. Japan? Great to Fantastic, almost without exception.

E.g., some American computer manufacturers like Dell and HP specify crap capacitors to save a few bucks. Others like Apple do not. All made in Asia.

The Chinese can stick chips on the board with the best of them. It's just that, being the low cost manufacturer, they attract business from OEMs who are determined to put out crap products.

I'm just not sure race can be a topic of "discussion". Some things are just "hardwired" into the brain, they are believed and no amount of talking will change things (altho intellectual trauma can). And race is definitely one of the hard-wired things for a big percentage of the human population.

I truly believe history and culture has a significant role to play in the upbringing of people. Asian families do well because of their historic and cultural backgrounds. The Chinese, for thousands of years, have had an exam system by which even the lowliest peasants could hope and dream to actually reach somewhere above their post. The examination system covered multi-branch topics such as poetry, history, art, math, science, music, etc. It was ingrained in the Chinese mindset that academics and education is a viable way to reach the top. They see that it is even easier to reach those heights in western society. The Koreans and Japanese have at times also borrowed heavily on this topic, and made an education an incredibly important part of their own culture. Note: That despite the higher than average academic records there is actually not all too many Asian CEOs in America, or enterpreneurs, or what have you. They reach a certain level in their career which is admirable and stay there, - better to be somewhere close to the top than at the very top where you're targetted.
The same could be said of any culture. Just compare the historic background of those cultures and you'd start seeing a picture form of how a large chunk of that group behaves. Not saying all of them do, but a good sizable chunk does.
Culture however can be changed, influenced, discussed, improved. Race cannot.
This characteristics transcends generations, even while being dilluted within the American culture itself.
You make the assumption that corporate America is a meritocracy. Up to a level, as you pointed out,, it may be. But beyond that only sociopaths need apply.
It is known.
I dont believe the corporate ladder is the only or even the most rewarding path towards success or wealth. unless you consider the aquisition of pieces of paper or numbers on a computer screen to be wealth. what i do believe is based on what i have witnessed and experienced as a political refugee to the usa from soviet russia. my parents who are both college graduates worked years on minimum wage so my dad can open up his own medical billing business and my mom a piano teacher. ive witnessed how culture roles play significant roles. we arent rich, but damn are we happy as shit not being in that communist hell hole. although according to my dad obama is on the fast track of making this country like the one we escaped saying that meritocracy is alive and well in the us...just not in the corporate world, or any world which has the state and its god like unions involved

The real issue here with this topic is reality. The fact is, is that all races are not equal as we are taught. Now before people jump straight into "this guy is a racist", I will also note that no race is superior.

Look at just about anything we enjoy today and it was invented/discovered by a person of European ancestry:

And let's not forget the emancipation of blacks was part of a civil war (considered one of the bloodiest wars in U.S history) that was fought for by whites. Why is the tea party racist? The fact is blacks need to get their shit together. I'm sick of hearing excuses and falsehood platitudes catering to this demographic. I've heard blacks say they have no "real leaders" and now Sowell says it IS THE LEADERS.

There are a good number of blacks that "have their shit together" however they don't make the news because no one cares about them. The media only wants to focus on the inner city ignorant portion of the black community. It would be tantamount to using the ignorant white folks of the Appalachian area as a proxy for the entire caucasion race. Those successful black folks find themselves in between a rock and a hard place because they end up being shunned by their own for "not being black enough" or being "uncle Tom sellout"... etc... and they also face animosity from caucasions and many assume that the only way a black person is successful was through some affirmative action quota and somehow not deserving of the success they worked so hard for. Many of the upper middle class white collar black people I know did it the right way and perhaps even worked harder for their success than their caucasion counterparts. Furthermore those same white collar successful black folks also get judged in some fashion by the actions of the successfu, rich black athlete as if they are one in the same just because of color. Causasions never suffer by comparison for the actions of a Lohan or Spears or some other white idiot?
Ironically the standard line by our schools, governments and society wants all of us to act as if race is a nonfactor and it should never be taken into consideration one way or the other yet not a single government sponsored form goes out that is not trying to quantify race. Segregation in the old south was the banner of evil yet the government allows and encourages segregation every day by supporting Congressional Black Causcus among the vast number of segregated black organizations that continue to encourage the separation of the races, not in the same way the old south did but segregated all the same. No mixed message here.
The real bottom line is, and this goes for all peoples is that you do not know what it feels like to be another person until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Poor whites are as welcome at elite "exclusive private clubs" as black folks. Until you have been profiled or harrassed by the police, you have no idea what it does to you head and how paranoid you can become with just one experience with one bad cop. The only color that matters in american society is green. An abundance of the green stuff generally gives you the "keys" to all the advantages our society has to offer. Skin color is far down the list of gaining advantage and access to any all people, places and things however being wealthy will have people of all races, creeds and colors kissing you behind with zero regard to what color you behind is.
If being white was the key to success how do you explain all the poor whites in the world. You think they just don't want to be rich and turned down access to all the exclusive clubs in america. If being black is prohibits succss how do you explain all of those nameless executives, lawyers, business owners, doctors, entreprenuers, accountants etc... In america you can do all the right things and still not succeede and it won't have anything to do with your race. Sometimes it just doesn't happen for you no matter what you do. Success is never guaranteed for anyone with an education. It's also not prohibited to anyone that is educated, motivated, creative, and willing to fail as many times as it takes before success takes hold.

asians aren't any different than any of the other immigrant groups who have come to the usa. if there is any difference, at least on the eastern side, the strength of family traditional and culture have persisted for longer in terms of generations of influence in the usa.
sowell brings up a good point. he blames the rise of the civil rights movement, post mlk, for the persistent loser attitude of the american black man. the blame really needs to be placed upon the focus of the civil rights movement itself. the movement took the perspective of labor rather than management, fighting for personal rights rather than financial rights. if mlk has sought to open a blacks only cafeteria right next to a whites only cafeteria instead of just wanting to ride in the front of the bus then the financial and cultural status of black people would be much different today.

A few spiritual axioms have become apparent:
1. Since potential flawed leaders are in abundance, the population that harbors the flawed leader is flawed, much like a PN junction attracts electrons (- charge) with holes (+ charge). The holes are a property of the medium since free space has no such holes. The sum of broken individuals, if broken enough can easily be a broken whole. The sum of complete [or complete to some threshold] individuals is a whole society. Flawed leaders must be regularly and systematically exposed. It's the society that must change, but paradoxically it can only change one individual at a time.
2. Leaders who become incensed at race inequities or other things are exposing themselves for what they are. It's also a spiritual axiom that the things a person becomes aggravated or irritated by are the qualities inside themselves they most despise.
Want real change? Turn your eye inward. Third eye needs no longer be blind.
