Ohio Runs Out Of Pentobarbital, Can't Execute Convicts

Tyler Durden's picture

Ohio said on Monday that it does not have enough of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital to carry out a scheduled execution next month. As Reuters reports, Ohio is the latest U.S. state to face a scarcity after the European manufacturer banned its sale for lethal injections of prisoners sentenced to death. The European Union is opposed to the death penalty (physical as opposed to economic) and has put pressure on US States to stop the practice. If only there was an anonymous online exchange where 'drugs' could be bought and sold to meet the demands of those looking for a quick fix (or multiple executions) despite the oversight of various freedoms by governments.

Via Reuters,

Ohio said on Monday that it does not have enough of the drug pentobarbital to carry out a scheduled execution next month, the latest U.S. state to face a scarcity after the European manufacturer banned its sale for lethal injections of prisoners sentenced to death.

Ohio is one of a number of U.S. states which have been forced to look to new suppliers such as lightly regulated "compounding pharmacies," or turn to new drugs for executions because major pharmaceutical companies are opposed to use of their drugs in carrying out the death penalty.

...

The Danish manufacturer of pentobarbital, Lundbeck LLC , has banned its sale to prisons or corrections departments for the death penalty. The European Union, of which Denmark is a member, is opposed to the death penalty and has put pressure on U.S. states to stop the practice.

On Monday, Ohio prison officials notified the state that Ohio does not have "sufficient quantity" of pentobarbital to carry out the execution of Ronald Phillips on Nov. 14, according to Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman JoEllen Smith.

She said the state will turn to the drugs midazolam and hydromorphone, which are not commonly used in lethal injections, for the Phillips execution.

We almost hesitate to note the irony that perhaps as retribution for pervasive US spying, Europe will make sure America's terminal convicts are relegated to more obsolete methods of "expiration" - gallows, drawing and quartering, firing squad are just some that spring to mind.

That being said, I don't approve of the death penalty. Not because I don't think that some crimes deserve death, but because I don't trust the state. Regarding anything. Ever.

I have long believed that the family of the victim should have the right to pull the lever or choose to allow the convicted to spend life in prison. I believe the state should try the accused; but leave the final decision to the family. This takes the power of life and death away from the state and puts it back into the hands of the agrieved - after the state has conducted a proper trial.

If the victims family is not convinced of the guilt of the accused; or if they believe extenuating circumstances exist - then they can choose to let him live.

In theory it sounds good. It is practiced in some countries using Sharia Law and it is abused.

The families of powerful and wealthy killers will coerce and bribe the victims family to take blood money. If the victims family doesn't agree then they can be threatened, have family members held as hostages or otherwise pressured.

The only safe option is allowing the victims family to make a plea (if they wish) for clemency but the Governor or other official to have the final word.

If the death penalty is only used for the worst of the worst beyond any doubt guilty then few would ask for clemency and it wouldn't be granted.

Tylers , your news source is somewhat inaccurate ,,, Ohio has PLENTY of the drug , pentobarbital ,,, it is however "expired" and the doctor that is paid to administer the dose (prepare the dose .. whatever) will not do so .. that is why they were looking for a new supply ... and are now looking for a different drug. The reason the doctor will not prepare the dose has to do with the fact that he knows he will be attacked by lib support groups if he does.  ***THIS IS NOT A JOKE***

I think they should :

1.) Use the stupid drug ,, sure it's expired ,, let the ACLU make an ass of themselves , the drug will work just fine.

2.) Inject his heart directly with Digoxin in a massive dose.

They seem to do it for sport. What was it, "We were bored so we decided to go out and kill a guy for the fun of it."

That's the difference between the civilized and the uncivilized, criminals and protectors.

I'd never go out and randomly kill someone, but I would kill to protect someone. Although the end result is the same, killing a person, a society of civilized people will recognize one act as a crime and the other as an act of protection.

A progressive society is not civilized because it only looks at the end result, not the actions that led to it. That is how progressives can propose the elimination of millions and believe it to be as justified as killing for protection.

It is a fair question.

I would have no problem killing a convicted murderer that has exhausted his or her appeals. I would not enjoy it, nor ask to be compensated, but would do it as a duty of the society I live in, if asked to do so.  Leaving a job for others, dirty or otherwise, is not how I live my life.

I have no problem killing animals for food.  I usually don't use a firearm; the bunnies above were killed by stepping on the head and yanking up on the legs to break the neck.

I have no problem shooting, stabbing, driving over, or killing someone with my bare hands, if death or serious bodily injury to me, or my loved ones, is imminent.

I do, however, have a problem aborting an unborn child.

What about you?

Do you leave it to others to administer justice?

Do you leave it to others to kill so you may eat?

Do you leave it to others to protect yourself and family from a deadly attack?

Do you leave it to others to kill your unborn child so that you can avoid the consequences of your actions?

Very well said.

When a person raises/hunts or traps their meat, butchers it and prepares it themselves - they have an innate understanding of the value of the end result. They understand the life cycle of the animal, the work involved in the harvest, the need for cleanliness and care throughout the entire process.

Much more so than the average burger eatin shmoe who doesn't give his food a second thought except the fact that he told them no pickles and they put pickles on it.

Disregarding the obvious financial aspect of the insane cost of the human life destruction (or "healthcare" website creation) process in the .gov USA-

Out of curiosity,

Have you ever killed your own dinner (or any other meal)?

If so, using what tools (the human hand, elctro-shock, freezer, knife/cleaver, hammer, crossbow, firearm)?

Have you ever killed a human being in self-defense?

Have you ever killed a human being in defense of another?

Have you ever killed a human being pursuant to an order from a sovereign legal entity? (irrespective of the ultimate legality of the order itself)

Have you ever attempted to kill a human being and failed in the attempt?

Have you ever facilitated (or intentionally failed to prevent) a human being attempting to end their own life?

Have you ever gone Berkowitz, Bundy, or Dahmer and "just killed someone"?

Have you ever killed an animal because it threatened you?

Have you ever killed an animal because it bothered you, and if so using what tools (the human hand, elctro-shock, fly swatter, microwave oven, firearm)?

Have you ever facilitated (or intentionally failed to prevent) an animal attempting to end its own life?

Have you ever attempted to kill an animal and failed in the attempt?

Just some light questions to ponder before attempting the fools errand of chasing moral superiority, when even finding the an encompassing union of ethical and logical consistency is a challenge worthy of Aristotle himself.

Folks

from my perspective (physician) there are several drugs that are not being replenished into the pipeline. Some are likely being 'regulated' (pain meds as the feds try to decrease 'over prescribing'). Other agents in short supply seem to be generic drugs in general. This means patients must fill the MUCH more expensive brand name equivalents.

I do not have time nor money to do the research to support my suspicions but I'd say the FDA is incompetent and criminal....but that is based on what I see not on good investigative reporting.

Did you see this?  Just fucking disgusting the level of corruption we have reached...

Revealed: Michelle Obama's Princeton classmate is top executive at firm that that built disastrous Obamacare website after being awarded no-bid $93m contract
  • Michelle Obama’s Princeton classmate is an executive at the company that built Obamacare website
  • Toni Townes-Whitley is senior vice president at CGI Federal which earned contract to build the site. She joined in May 2010
  • The women are both members of the Association of Black Princeton Alumni
  • The Department of Health and Human Services reviewed only CGI’s bid for the Obamacare account even though four companies submitted bids
  • CGI became an approved government vendor in 2007

The Obama administration has been accused of cronyism after it was revealed Michelle Obama's Princeton classmate is an executive at the company contracted to build the beleaguered Obamacare website.

Toni Townes-Whitley is senior vice president at CGI Federal, the U.S. arm of a Canadian company which won the no-bid contract for the problem-plagued website.

Townes-Whitley, from the Princeton class of ’85, and Michelle Obama are members of the Association of Black Princeton Alumni, according to The Daily Caller.

Earlier this month, Washington Examiner reported the Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare and Medicaid handed CGI Obamacare account without putting the contract out to competitive tender.

It has since been revealed four companies submitted bids, but only CGI was considered for the $93 million Healthcare.gov contract.

Good idea but you gotta keep your history straight.  If you were a Roman citizen you got beheaded.  If not, you got crucified.  It was the Jews who were into stoning.  Maybe that explains Sandy Koufax.  (It also makes it quite obvious that Jesus was executed under Roman, not Jewish, law.)

The is a way of executing prisoners humanely. The Execution by Lethal Injection is meant to maximize pain. It is meant to be Cruel.

It burns as much as the burn when you get that Carbocaine shot at the Dentist.

But who cares about that Right in the Constitution? The Constitution is just a "God Damned piece of paper", right?

The outright HYPOCRISY of many of you really is abysmal. I cannot stand the fucking HYPOCRITE SOCIALISTS but most of you are just as bad as they are.

I have no faith in the Constitution because, even you, whom so disparage the OBOZO, AND DESERVEDLY SO, you refuse to be critical when it comes down to looking at your own DEFICIENCIES, your own CHARACTER FLAWS. You have NO RESPECT for the Constitution.

If you had respect then ALL CIVIL RIGHTS written within the Bill of Rights need to be observed. But you "Pick and Choose". You ignore that "CRUEL AND UNUSAL PUNISHMENT" Clause. You are as bad as the SOCIALISTS who want to ignore the Bill of Rights. HYPOCRITES!!!

You can Gas them with Nitrogen. In 15 seconds, after experiencing anoxia, they are unconcious. Within one minute they are DEAD. There is no creulty or pain doing that.

But that is just too easy. I am not saying "Abolish the Death Penalty". I am just saying that it can be done without excruciating pain and suffering.

You say that they killed their victims in cruel and inhumane ways? Yes they killed their victims in cruel and inhumane ways. That is why they are Sentenced to Die.

So that gives you an EXCUSE to BEHAVE as psychopathically, CRUEL and INHUMANELY as they behaved? If that is the case THEN YOU ARE NO BETTER THAN THEY ARE AND DESERVE TO BE REMOVED.

Many of you are really fucking sick.

That is why there is no Political Solution as the Politicians whom are elected REFLECTS MOST OF YOU. You know whom I am addressing.

If you are not included then please disregard. If you are then go ahead and Down Arrow it. It does not change the truth.

So what should we do with a young guy who raped and murdered his girlfriend's 3 year old daughter?

Throw him in jail and let him have a room, meals, TV, computer access, and exercise costing taxpayers millions of dollars over the course of his life?

Have him go to a psychiatrist for treatment and let him back into society because he promises not to do it again?

Or kill the fucking sick sack of shit so he can't do anything to anyone ever again.

Personally I'd slowly cut off pieces of his limbs and cauterize the stump each time to maximize his pain. I'd continue until his body finally succumbs to the pain. But even that isn't a worse enough punishment.

If somebody kidnapped, raped, and murdered my child. There is nothing I wouldn't do to them and I'd make sure they don't get the chance to get off for their crime using our fucked up legal system.

When you have to face that type of justice when committing a crime, then you have a deterrent against it.

I am a Canadian so please forgive me my lack of knowledge about the Constitution of the United States but ...

Couldn't the Constitution be amended to do away with the"CRUEL AND UNUSAL PUNISHMENT" clause?

Wasn't the Constitution amended to abolish slavery and allow women to vote? And to allow income tax and gay marriage?

If you guys could amend away the cruel and unusual punishment bit then maybe you could televise the executions (a moneymaker for sure) and get really creative with the methods of execution. When hangings and the guillotine get tired there is always drawing and quartering.

Those are examples of the cruel & unusual punishments which motivated the framers to write the 8th amendment.

For example, I think we all agree that it would be cruel and unusual for somebody to be executed by making him watch the Kenyan Usurper smugly reading platitudes off a teleprompter until he goes mad and starts "doing the chicken".

I'm not dentist, but I have visited one, if "it burns as much as the burn when you get that Carbocaine shot at the Dentist" I don't think it rises to the level of cruel and unusual punishment. However, I also think that hanging and beheading with an axe don't rise to the level of cruel and unusual punishment, as opposed to the State drawing and quartering its citizens.

Society often demands blood justice, for better or worse, and it is a largely accepted practice in the US. However, Society implements murder and extracts ITS pound of flesh through the State. And the State now has decided that it no longer requires Society or its Laws in order to take the life of its citizens, and may extract flesh of its own volition. This implies it no longer recognizes even a bastardization of drawing its authority through the Consent of the Governed. For having abused and overstepped its authority, I think it would be better to revoke the State's authority to take life, until such a time as it can be at least remotely trusted not to abuse such authority.

What a waste of life to kill people.

Just throw them on an island and make a spectator sport out of it.

You tell them that if they can survive 6 months on the island, the last 2 people standing get their freedom.

Then throw a bunch of weapons and sharp objects on the beach.

Then after they pickup the weapons drop a crate with meals for only 3 in it on the island.

If a crazed maniac came to your compound to rob you and murder your family, you should have no problem sending him to Hell a couple pieces of lead heavier.  This is the reason the biblical commandment is properly translated as "Thou shalt not murder" rather than "Thou shalt not kill".  It is the reason the Constitution party's platform plank says protect innocent life (such as the pre-born), not cold-blooded murderers.

If killing a cold-blooded murderer is an appropriate act for an individual, it is also an appropriate use of the collective force of individuals through their government, though I will concede that this power should be jealously guarded by The People.

Traditional (and honorable) methods of humane (instantaneous) execution have long included hanging, firing squad, chopping block (guillotine), etc.  In this case, the whiney-cryie bleeding-heart do-gooders have cornered themselves into a box of their own making, by substituting "overdose with their specific drug-of-choice after poking with needles" for these traditional methods.  Some might even consider poking repeatedly with needles to be cruel & unusual punishment, physically or emotionally.  Like everything else these days, their dilemma would be amusing, if it weren't totally insane.

If I kill someone with premeditation, it is murder.

If some weird intangible collective kills someone with premeditation, it is magically transubstantiated with the smack of a gavel into a rightful execution.

If I counterfeit fiat, it is a felony.  If a central bank or a comercial bank counterfeits fiat, it is quantitative easing or fractional reserve banking respectively.

If I steal something, it is both a sin and a crime.  If a government steals things, it is taxation

Time to level the playing field.

Let's see.........can't execute 1 prisoner in the US due to some lack of a drug yet the US has no problem killing dozens of innocent people on a daily basis thru the use of drones and often kill children as well and hardly anyone knows a fucking thing about it but watch them hang a killer in the US and watch what happens.

Is the US fucked up or are humans just plain fucking stupid?
